Wireless sensor networks are aggregates of sensor nodes into sophisticated sensing, computational and communication infrastructures. These new networks are having a significant impact (and promises to have even more) on a wide array of applications ranging from military, to scientific, to industrial, to health-care, to domestic, establishing ubiquitous computing that will pervade society and redefine the way in which we live and work. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from industry and academia. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of sensor networks are solicited. Papers describing prototype and experimental implementations and deployment of sensor networks and systems are particularly welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Sensor-based systems and applications - Operating systems - Middleware and software tools - Networking architectures and protocols - Data gathering, aggregation and dissemination - Topology control - Power management and energy-efficient design - Time synchronization - Location management - Sensor networks with mobile elements - Cross-layer architectures - Intelligent sensor nodes - Security and dependability issues - Modelling and performance evaluation - Measurements PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and not be previously published, or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts must be limited to 5 pages in IEEE 8.5x11 conference format, and formatted in accordance with the IEEE Computer Society author guidelines (ftp://pubftp.computer.org/Press/Outgoing/proceedings/INSTRUCT.HTM). Recently significant efforts have been made to enhance and integrate the latest wireless communications technologies into the vehicle and transportation systems to enable safety and information applications. For example, significant industrial and governmental efforts are underway to push from passive-safety to active-safety by employing advanced networking functions in vehicles and highway infrastructure. When such communications and networking capabilities are installed, the vehicle itself can interact intelligently with other vehicles and the highway system, achieving a much higher degree of vehicular safety. Such capabilities can also support many exciting new applications, such as traffic management, vehicle diagnostics and mobile commerce. . The increasing importance of vehicle and infrastructure communications is recognized by governments, highway authorities, automobile manufacturers and the academic community. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to address recent developments and challenges in deploying vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-with-infrastructure networking technologies, and their applications including safety-assistance and driver-convenience. Some models of context information already exist, however many research issues related to context information modeling are still not fully addressed. A generic approach to context modeling is needed in order to capture various features of context information, including a variety of types of context information, dependencies between context information, quality of context information and context histories. Hybrid approaches to context modeling -- such as approaches that combine ontology-based modeling with alternative modeling techniques -- also need to be explored, as many of the current solutions are too limited to capture the richness of context information and support the necessary reasoning. In addition, to ease software engineering problems encountered in programming context-aware applications, appropriate abstractions are necessary to support discovery and reuse of context information, as well as scalable methods of context processing and management. It is also necessary to increase user acceptance of autonomously adapting applications by developing methods of balancing autonomy of context-aware applications with user control. This workshop’s aim is to advance the state-of-the-art in context information modeling, reasoning and management, and in methods that balance autonomy of context-aware applications with user control. The goal is to identify concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modeling and reasoning, as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. CoMoRea will provide a forum for researchers to present and discuss recent research results and ongoing work. A strong emphasis will be put on experiences with context modeling and the management of the context information. The workshop will foster exchange of experiences and collaboration among researchers. In particular, the following topics are of interest to this workshop: * Context modeling techniques * Domain-specific context models * Ontology-based approaches to context modeling and reasoning * Hybrid context models (integration of various modeling techniques) * Advanced issues in context modeling, including issues of information quality and ambiguity * Context reasoning algorithms, their complexity and accuracy * Discovery and reuse of context information * Privacy of context information * Distributed and scalable context management * Experiences with using context models to build context-aware applications * Tool support for context modeling and development of context model-based applications * Balance of autonomy with user control Publication ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submitted papers will be refereed by the workshop Program Committee. These include scenarios where seamless access to a computing infrastructure is provided, scenarios where interaction and data sharing among mobile users occur in mobile ad hoc networks, and hybrid scenarios that combine these two. The continued miniaturization of computing devices along with improvements in the performance/price ratio enable new services and applications, e.g., in environmental monitoring and transportation. Although substantial research has been conducted, this area remains ripe with open research challenges, e.g., in relation to context-aware computing, such as location-based services or ubiquitous computing applications; mobile applications in hybrid networks; and consistency and data processing in sensor networks. The conference focuses on research contributions within data management in relation to mobile, wearable, and pervasive computing. The conference invites submissions within this area. Ambient intelligence and ubiquitous computing are also part of this broad vision of "on demand" networking, providing services to users when they need it, albeit the final user might not even be aware if it! WONS is now at its fourth edition, and the community interest is still on the rise, providing a premier forum for high quality papers presentation and lively discussion. The promise of instant bandwidth availability had led to the development of market mechanisms that companies used to trade bandwidth just as other commodities. However, those trading markets all but disappeared with the bursting of the telecom bubble. Driven by the recent technical advances in telecommunications and the new potentials of emerging peer-to-peer (P2P) and next generation networks (NGN), the goal of this workshop is to take a fresh and innovative look at the concept of bandwidth on demand (BOD). Recent advances in the Internet-based communications domain, in which the support of Quality-of-Service and diverse application services become possible, require in many cases short-termed bandwidth assignments for, e.g., large sporting events or cultural open air activities. In addition, the support of bandwidth trading in a fully decentralized and secured manner, e.g., based on P2P schemes, shows further advantages in terms of reliability and scalability for large-scale systems. Based on the success of the preceding WMAN workshops of 2005, 2004 and 2002, the workshop will also be held in 2007. For the upcoming workshop, we are very happy to introduce WMAN 2007 as an event moved to an international scenery (taking place in Bern, Switzerland) and being hosted in the context of the 15th ITG/GI conference on communication in distributed systems (German: ITG/GI - Fachtagung "Kommunikation in Verteilten Systemen") - see http://kivs07.unibe.ch/ Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks today are among the most active research topics in the area of mobile and wireless communication. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally unsupervised way. A fundamental research challenge is the design of robust decentralized computing systems capable of operating under changing environments and noisy input, and yet exhibit the desired behaviour and response time, under constraints such as energy consumption, size, and processing power. These systems should be able to adapt and learn how to react to unforeseen scenarios as well as to display properties comparable to social entities. Biological systems are able to handle many of these challenges with an elegance and efficiency still far beyond current human artifacts. Based on this observation, bio-inspired approaches have been proposed in the past years as a strategy to handle the complexity of such systems. The goal is to obtain methods on how to engineer technical artifacts which have similar high stability and efficiency as biological entities often have. The BIONETICS conference aims at bringing together researchers and scientists from several disciplines in computer science and engineering where bio-inspired methods are investigated. In parallel to the Internet, mobile communications also has evolved to an integral component in our everyday life providing a growing variety of services. Industry is pushing new standards that allow high data rate multimedia applications as well as seamless communication across heterogeneous radio and network technologies including Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC). The success of the next generation mobile telecommunication systems will again depend on the services and applications that can be provided. These future systems are expected to converge paradigms of traditional mobile telecommunication systems and the Internet protocols and software engineering methods. New paradigms will emerge. For example, the customer acceptance is considered to be widely increased by tailoring services and applications to actual user needs, their preferences and the context a user is in. Another example is Peer-to-Peer (P2P). Peer-to-Peer communication supports customers exchanging their own services and resources among each other (e.g., in communities). Furthermore, applying the Peer-to-Peer paradigm to existing system allows cost saving through reuse of available resources. A well engineered next generation service platform should provide all capabilities to allow innovative services to be created and deployed in short time addressing user needs and operator requirements. Open interfaces allow a chaining of expertise in service provisioning. Semantic technologies may help to structure knowledge about the user's vicinity. Issues to be addressed in the workshop include: - Open Service Architectures - Mobile Service Platforms (in heterogeneous and ubiquitous environments) - Mobile peer to peer networking and applications - Capabilities and features for next generation mobile services (context-awareness, personalization/personal agent, high quality multimedia, information distribution) - Semantic Service Building Blocks (service modelling, service creation, service discovery, service composition, service execution, service management) - Privacy and trust as enabling technologies for service platforms - Service platform prototypes, trials, test beds, and evaluation - Innovative mobile applications and services This Workshop is the best opportunity to address this highly important theme in sufficient depth and breadth. The aim is providing ubiquitous connectivity and network centric services, with the important attribute of service provisioning "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. Even in the cellular network world, providers often point out their capacity to offer ad-hoc services that are tailored for a specific event or community, e.g. gaming on cellular networks. Researchers are struggling to find new technologies to help a fast growing population of seniors in most countries. This population is expected to grow even more rapidly during the next several decades, and the problems caused by the aging population are becoming a major social challenge. While it is usually difficult for some seniors to maintain independence, most seniors with mild to medium dementia can often still lead relatively normal lives if they are monitored and receive assistance in time. Technologies designed to help seniors live more independently will create substantial social impact and become very promising. This special session focuses on new technologies for health care of aging people. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following: (1) Network architectures for monitoring and assistance (2) Mobile service platform for continuity of care (3) Wearable to support rehabilitations (4) Ambient intelligence for healthy living, such as nutrition advices, disease prevention, emergency warning. Over the last decade, active researches have produced novel algorithms for blind, deaf, mute people or for people with severe motor disabilities. These researches are strongly related with the development of new dedicated systems for human-computer interactions. Whatever the kind of handicap, image processing can provide a significant help for disability compensation to avoid the gap increasing between disabled and nondisabled people with respect to the new technologies. Researches for new systems for disabled people are multidisciplinary research from engineering sciences (computer science, HCI, automatic, electronics, etc.) and human sciences (psychology, cognition, etc.). Here we are focusing on researches involving image and video processing for disability. However, multimodal signals-based systems can be considered. The goal of this special issue is to provide original contributions in the field of image and video processing for disability. While in the past entertainment technology traditionally offered predominantly passive experiences, continual advances in network and computer technologies are providing tools for implementing greater interactivity and for enabling consumers to enjoy more exciting experiences, such as, for example, interactive digital TV, interactive theatre and orchestrated music and sound design. This phenomenon is pulling together an extremely diverse group of experts specializing in different technical areas, such as networking, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, games, animation, multimedia design, human-computer interaction, educational media and software engineering. Even though high-tech entertainment promotes interdisciplinary fusion, yet only the ubiquity of wireless/wired communication is considered suitable for accepting the challenge of building a large interactive environment for the delivery of the maximum entertainment value to millions of consumers worldwide. In this respect, there is a great hope that the wired and wireless may take over this complex scenario for fulfilling the consumer expectations. Coupled with advances in wireless communications technologies, recently there have been significant efforts to enhance and integrate the communications technologies into the vehicle and transportation systems to enable safety and information applications. With such communications and networking capabilities are integrated into vehicles and the infrastructure, not only safety but many other emerging applications can be supported for intelligent interactions with the transportation system, with other vehicles, and inside vehicles, to help with traffic management, vehicle diagnostics, mobile commerce, and much more. The increasing importance of vehicle and infrastructure communications is recognized by governments, highway authorities, automobile manufacturers and the academic community. At the same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shape future advances in wireless technology. With this in mind, this workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. WiNTECH 2006 is soliciting proposals for research demonstrations of novel wireless testbed capabilities and measurement results. The session is intended to present the advances in tesbed and wireless characterizations and to foster discussions on future directions for wireless network evaluations. Demonstrations of works published earlier are also welcome. WiNTECH 2006 is also seeking proposals for posters describing novel work in wireless network testbeds, measurements and characterizations. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Design and evaluation of wireless testbeds, prototypes and platforms * Experiences/lessons from recent testbed design efforts * Hybrid experimentation approaches combining use of multiple evaluation methodologies * Integration of diverse and distributed testbed infrastructures * Testbed management issues and monitoring support * Wireless testbed case studies * Experimental evaluation of applications and protocols (at different layers), and the impact of cross-layer interactions * Large-scale and heterogeneous wireless network evaluations * Approaches for real-world evaluation of mobile networks * Evaluation environments for sensor and satellite networks * Techniques for improving reproducibility of real-world testing * Implementation approaches to ease transition between various evaluation methodologies as well as to improve testbed accessibility * New measurement methodologies and infrastructures * Measurement and characterization (modeling) of various real-world aspects such as usage patterns, traffic, mobility and channel characteristics * Interference and spectrum usage measurements * Validation of existing simulation models, and results across different testbeds/evaluation methodologies * Software tools in support of measurements, trace/data collection and management For submission instructions please refer the workshop website. While that is the Holy Grail, developing secure multimedia applications and solutions in a distributed environment with competing technologies and emerging standards is an enormous challenge. During this workshop, we will explore ways in which a combination of emerging standards, emerging media formats, innovative solutions and technologies that enable new markets might drive both new applications and entirely new ways of managing content. We will provide an excellent overview of the relevant research, business and consumer challenges, as well as the potential impact of emerging optical media formats. We expect to cover multimedia security from several perspectives: researchers, consumers and content/service providers. Call for Papers The intention of this workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners from multimedia security communities (academia and industry) to share a vision of "Multimedia Security and Content Protection in this Rapidly Growing Digital World". That is, from identifying challenging problems that can shape the future of research, to practical applications and/or research that address issues posed by the convergence of television, computers and the Internet. Wireless mesh networking (WMN) has emerged as a promising concept to meet such challenges of next generation networking. In WMN, no cabling is needed to connect the routers together. All routers self-organise and auto-configure themselves wirelessly, and form a rich radio mesh connectivity among themselves that is difficult to provision in wired networks. While wireless router connectivity significantly reduces the up-front deployment and subsequent maintenance costs, the rich mesh connectivity helps delivering high level of reliability and robustness. Due to these attractive features, WMN is being considered for a wide variety of application scenarios such as backhaul connectivity for cellular radio access networks, high-speed metropolitan area mobile networks, community networking, building automation, intelligent transport system networks, defence systems, and city-wide surveillance systems. Despite significant advances in the last few years, many challenging research issues, such as sharp drop in available throughput as the number of wireless hop increases, remains to be resolved. Industry, academia, and standard bodies are all actively working together on bringing this technology to its maturity. The aim of this Feature Topic is to feature the recent advances in theory and application of wireless mesh network. Articles from both academia and industry are solicited.
