The IEEE Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IoTSMS 2022) aims at soliciting original ideas on the broad area of IoT including challenges and opportunities, concepts and applications and future trends. The IoTSMS aims to facilitate discussions among academics and IoT practitioners and make positive contributions to the field. Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished manuscripts. This result can be obtained with a transition from a centralized, cloud-based architecture to an interoperable and decentralized dynamic architecture. This transition will allow achieving highly efficient and responsive services by locating the data processing close to the data source, in the edge. Moreover, edge computing allows bringing AI-based IoT solutions in areas where connectivity is scarce and where in general resources are limited, for example in rural or remote areas. Consider, for example, the so-called TinyML solutions, a fast-growing field of machine learning technologies capable of performing on-device data analytics at extremely low power, typically in the mW range. In this special issue, we are interested in solutions based on the Publish/subscribe messaging systems to facilitate the move of IoT towards an interoperable and decentralized dynamic architecture, ensuring the easy-to-use and high availability of current infrastructures, as well as what additional benefits this new paradigm can bring to IoT. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch "Drahtlose Sensornetze" - FGSN 2022 Drahtlose Sensornetze sind eine vielversprechende Technologie zur Beobachtung und Beeinflussung von Vorgängen in der realen Welt. Autonome Sensorknoten nehmen Parameter der Umwelt durch Sensoren wahr und können diese durch Aktoren beeinflussen. Viele solcher autonomen und ressourcenbeschränkten Knoten kooperieren dabei mittels drahtloser Kommunikation. Die Eigenschaften dieser Knoten und Netze implizieren eine Vielzahl von neuartigen Herausforderungen, die sich in einer regen Forschungsaktivität widerspiegeln. Ziel dieser Reihe von Fachgesprächen ist es, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus Wissenschaft, Forschung und Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem informellen Gedankenaustausch zu geben und die Kooperation in diesem multidisziplinären Forschungsbereich zu verstärken. Beiträge Im Rahmen des Fachgesprächs soll die Diskussion gegenüber der Vortragspräsentation im Vordergrund stehen. Beiträge sollen daher überwiegend in Form von Extended Abstracts eingereicht werden. Darüber hinaus können aber auch Full Papers eingereicht werden. Einreichungen sind sowohl auf Deutsch als auch Englisch möglich. Die angenommenen Beiträge werden als Sammelband über OPUS veröffentlicht. New techniques for user-level concerns: participatory and social sensing; trust, security, privacy, and ethics; user interface, interaction, and persuasion; online and offline social networking and pervasive computing. For example, for industrial manufacturers, digital twins can create digital models of substantial machines, to help us make holistic understanding of how these machines work, make possible modification or predictive maintenance, and take effective actions before devoting much resources and expenditure. The integration of digital twins and the industrial IoT enables a digital revolution of industrial automation. Researchers from industry and academia have focused on the virtualization and digitalization of industrial objects, while there are yet a number of challenges like high-fidelity modularity of digital twins, synchronization between digital and physical objects, interaction and networking among digital twins, scalable and resilient design of digital twin for industrial IoT. Signal Processing (SP) plays a significant role in expanding the number of IoT technologies and capitalizing on their applications. In this context, the unique challenges from the SP point of view are: (i) system design taking into account the applications' practical limitations and requirements, (ii) gather collective intelligence from heterogeneous and inexpensive IoT sensors/devices (e.g. to perform an inference task in decentralized fashion) (iii) minimize device cost and energy consumption while allowing perpetual monitoring/sensing (iv) grant adaptivity to cope with device mobility use cases, (v) leverage fine-grained "programming" of wireless environments to cope with massive IoT scenarios. These challenges give rise to the need for developing pervasive, inexpensive, fast, and low-power algorithms (including those performing learning & data fusion), as well as novel theoretical tools, evaluation benchmarks, and methodologies to characterize the performance of the proposed algorithms. The main goal of this Special Issue is to address these challenges and present advanced and innovative SP tools and algorithms for IoT systems. Contributions addressing both theoretical and practical applications including, but not limited to the following topics, are welcome for submission: - efficient SP for data collection from IoT devices (compressed sensing techniques, censoring, quantization, mixed-resolution sensors, etc.) - SP techniques enabling dense and/or interfering multiple-access in IoT - distributed inference and data fusion for IoT (estimation, detection, classification, multimodal methods, etc.) - theoretical analysis and performance bounds for IoT systems (MSE lower bounds, CRLB, uncertainty quantification, etc.) - intelligent processing for green IoT (low-complexity resource optimization, edge-cloud architectures, coarse-quantization transceivers for IoT, green AI, etc.) - machine learning for IoT data processing (federated, graph-based, distributed, etc.) - SP programming the IoT wireless environment (ambient backscattering, energy-harvesting, wireless power transfer, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, etc.) - IoT-based integrated sensing and communications, localization - SP-enabled vertical applications for IoT (factory 4.0, smart cities, digital twin, etc.) Submission Guidelines All submissions are peer reviewed to ensure that only the highest-quality original articles are published. Submitted articles should strive to make their contribution understandable by the general IoT practitioner and must comply with the specifications detailed in the Submission Guidelines. Authors are invited to submit technical demonstrations (no more than 3 pages) showing innovative and original research. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch "Drahtlose Sensornetze" - FGSN 2022* Drahtlose Sensornetze sind eine vielversprechende Technologie zur Beobachtung und Beeinflussung von Vorgängen in der realen Welt. Autonome Sensorknoten nehmen Parameter der Umwelt durch Sensoren wahr und können diese durch Aktoren beeinflussen. Viele solcher autonomen und ressourcenbeschränkten Knoten kooperieren dabei mittels drahtloser Kommunikation. Die Eigenschaften dieser Knoten und Netze implizieren eine Vielzahl von neuartigen Herausforderungen, die sich in einer regen Forschungsaktivität widerspiegeln. For example, Industrial Internet applications, Augmented Reality, Tactile Internet require ultra-low latency measured in single-digit milliseconds and do not tolerate jitter at all. Economic pressures mandate increasingly cloudification of real-time applications with precision service level needs. Many of those applications are mission-critical and cannot afford any loss in connectivity or even single packets. Collectively, these applications require networking services that support high-precision and predictable service levels with associated guarantees that border on determinism. This requires a rethinking of many of the principles underlying existing "Best Effort" internetworking technology. Various approaches are emerging that try to tackle those challenges. Data centers with fixed topologies and a constant number of hops rapidly replace conventional routing and more general Internet topologies. Networks are becoming more programmable to allow to custom-tailor and optimize treatment of packets and flows. Related technologies range from Service Function Chaining to Network Slicing to SDN. While 5G is making URLLC at the network edge a reality, momentum for Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G is building to push the boundaries of precision services beyond the edge and across the core. One overarching question concerns how these technologies can be harnessed and what additional approaches are needed to be able to actually deliver on high-precision networking with service levels that are predictable and that can be guaranteed. This will involve advances across all networking planes, including but not limited to approaches for the programming and processing of packets in the data plane, evolved control interfaces and ultra-low latency control loops to optimize service levels in the control-plane, methods for high-precision measurements and telemetry with nanosecond accuracy at scale, as well as advances in the related platforms and algorithms in the management plane. This special issue focuses on challenges and solution approaches to deliver, manage, control, monitor, and measure high-precision network services that provide applications with predictable service levels that can be guaranteed. This result can be obtained with a transition from a centralized, cloud-based architecture to an interoperable and decentralized dynamic architecture. This transition will allow achieving highly efficient and responsive services by locating the data processing close to the data source, in the edge. Moreover, edge computing allows bringing AI-based IoT solutions in areas where connectivity is scarce and where in general resources are limited, for example in rural or remote areas. Consider, for example, the so-called TinyML solutions, a fast-growing field of machine learning technologies capable of performing on-device data analytics at extremely low power, typically in the mW range. In this special issue, we are interested in solutions based on the Publish/subscribe messaging systems to facilitate the move of IoT towards an interoperable and decentralized dynamic architecture, ensuring the easy-to-use and high availability of current infrastructures, as well as what additional benefits this new paradigm can bring to IoT. All submissions should be written in English with a maximum length of 9 single-spaced, double-column pages using 10pt fonts on 8.5 in x 11 in paper, including all figures, tables, and references, in PDF format. Authors must use the Manuscript Templates for IEEE Conference Proceedings. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by IEEE and will be presented at the conference. Based on TPC reviews and discussions, some papers may be accepted as 5-page short papers or 2-page posters in addition to the regular 9-page papers.
