By allowing peers serving each other in the network, p2p technology overcomes many limitations in traditional client-server paradigm to achieve user and bandwidth scalabilities. It has been shown that performance of a properly-designed p2p network actually improves, rather than deteriorates, with the increase of population size. Peer-to-Peer technology is promising for large content distribution as demonstrated by a number of proof-of-concept prototypes in both academia and companies. In a p2p multimedia streaming system, multimedia contents are delivered to a large pool of distributed users with low delay, high quality and high robustness. Fueled by advances in networking and compression technologies, p2p multimedia streaming has experienced much initial deployment success for applications such as Internet TV (IPTV), video conferencing, and surveillance. It is the key to address the emerging needs of large-scale digital IPTV, interactive videos, interactive games and other next-generation broadcast-based or personalized multimedia services. A scalable peer-to-peer multimedia system should support many hosts, possibly in excess of hundreds or even millions, with diverse heterogeneity in bandwidth, capability, storage, network, and mobility. It should also be able to support various applications under dynamic user arrival and departure, frequent host failures and unavailability, and unpredictable user behaviors, network traffic and congestion. In a p2p streaming networks, users should be able to share, search, and access contents in a distributed and efficient manner. To achieve these goals, it is particularly important to address the challenges in architecture design, network/transport support, resource discovery and content delivery mechanisms. Scope of Contributions ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This feature issue is devoted to original surveys and tutorials on these emerging issues in P2P streaming. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished original articles that are not under review in any other conference or journal. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the research community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. Submissions must be made electronically in non-editable PDF or Postscript format by sending an email to fumca2006(a)nokia.com by June 16, 2006. Submission implies the acceptance that at least one author will register to the main conference and present the paper if accepted. The selection process will involve peer reviews and reviews by program committee members. This workshop will aim at discussing these and several other challenges and issues behind the evolution of WLANs from cable replacement to public access. Leaders and thinkers of the field from academia and industry will assemble to share their ideas and views. Authors are invited to submit original technical papers or position papers, describing current research, experimental work and visions of the future. General quality of service mechanisms become even more important due to bandwidth and other resource limitations. Challanges such as dealing with partitioned operation have led to new research areas such as delay-tolerant networking. The presence of mobile nodes in many of these settings complicates further the dependability issues. Clearly, these dependability challenges must be met before the full promise of ad hoc and sensor networks can be realized. GOAL AND TOPICS The main goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers to focus exclusively on the important topic of dependability issues in ad hoc and sensor networks, to outline its specific and unique research challenges, and to identify some of the most promising candidate solution methods and techniques to address those challenges. The workshop is focussed on systems that address more sophisticated models of context that use many different aspects. A key aspect of context-aware mobile systems is using models and techniques to adapt the system.s behaviour so that it behaves in a manner that is relevant and pertinent to the current context. The workshop focuses on service design and implementation issues for mobile context-aware systems. Approaches range from modelling of the context, through processing of context, to the architecture through which a context-based system can be implemented. For context sensitive applications to be delivered in the real world, the critical middle layer of the mobile systems needs to be much better understood. In addition, fundamental interaction design, content strategies such as content caching and collaborative mechanisms provide other important areas of research. WORKSHOP AIMS The field of context-aware mobile systems is a new and emerging research topic. We aim to bring together researchers from a wide variety of backgrounds who focus on the design and implantations of CAMS. The workshop will provide a forum that initiates and facilitates communication between different research communities. CAMS will aim to clarify the differing constraints and required functionality in representative applications and identify mutually agreed research questions within the area. Together, participants will explore methods for the evaluation and comparison of context-aware mobile systems. Overall, we seek to cross-fertilise the ideas and innovations of currently unconnected groups. Authors may designate their paper for one of these sessions, but need not to. To encourage diversity, any single author may submit at most two papers. Papers authored by program committee members are held to a significantly higher standard, and their number in the final programme severely restricted. Reviewing is not double blind; feel free to include your affiliation and all references in full. Papers are reviewed by the programme committee, with the help of outside referees. Papers will be accepted primarily for their impact on the Systems community, and for bridging gaps between different communities. Novelty, clarity of explanation and thorough evaluation are additional criteria. Acceptance may be provisional, subject to further shepherding by a member of the program committee before final acceptance. The conference does not have a predefined format or a target number of accepted papers. Papers will be accepted or rejected based on their merits, and the conference will be organized in a format that accommodates the number of papers that meet that criterion. SUBMISSION Papers should not exceed 14 pages double column including figures and tables in standard ACM format, but preferably using 10pt or larger font on 12pt spacing. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the research community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. +++ Call for Papers: AuLe 2006 +++ Workshop AudioLearning 2006 im Rahmen der 4. Deutsche e-Learning Fachtagung der Gesellschaft für Informatik Darmstadt 11. Der neue Einreichungstermin ist somit der 19. Juni 2006. -------------------------------------------- Die DeLFI-Tagung ist die einschlägige wissenschaftliche Tagung im deutsch-sprachigen Raum, auf der dem interessierten Fachpublikum neueste informatiknahe Ergebnisse aus Forschung und Praxis zum Thema E-Learning präsentiert werden. Im Rahmen einer Pre-Conference findet der Workshop AudioLearning 2006 (AuLe 2006) am 11. September 2006 an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt statt. Thema des Workshops ist das auditive Lernen, insbesondere wenn der Lehrstoff technischer, mathematischer oder auch naturwissenschaftlicher Fächer vermittelt werden soll. Das Medium Hörbuch erlebt zurzeit seine Renaissance. Auch im Umfeld des E-Learning wird in zunehmendem Maße der Hörsinn entdeckt. Zunehmend werden Audiodateien mit unterschiedlichsten Lehrinhalten zum Download bereitgestellt. Lernplattformen mit Podcasting-Funktionen eröffnen neue Lernwege an den Schulen und Hochschulen. Eine neue Herausforderung bilden hingegen technische, mathematische oder auch naturwissenschaftliche Fächer. Mit der Durchführung dieses Workshops wird ein gänzlich neues Forschungsfeld betreten. Unter Berücksichtigung didaktisch-pädagogischer wie auch technischer Aspekte sollen hier erstmalig u. a. Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten analysiert und eine Umsetzung dieser angeregt sowie die Aufbereitung dieser Lehrmedien für allgegenwärtige Anwendungsszenarien untersucht werden. The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, and Wireless PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available (e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN etc). The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. The workshop environment encourages lively discussion among participants and invites strong feedback for work in progress. In 2007, NOSSDAV will be held at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign IL, USA. UIUC is in driving distance to Chicago, offering spectacular architecture, art museums and live jazz. Urbana is close to various national historical landmarks including President Lincoln's house & library. NOSSDAV invites submissions on all areas of multimedia computing and networking and strongly encourages work in progress in emerging areas. But as the volumes of data grow, so does the importance of, and challenges associated with, multimedia content protection and security. To address these challenges, it is imperative to devise effective and flexible solutions. New technologies offer convenient ways to distribute and consume digital media; yet these new technologies also make it relatively easy to quickly and flawlessly copy digital data, posing tremendous challenges to protecting intellectual property rights. Multimedia security standards aim to define specifications that facilitate effective and flexible content protection schemes and promote interoperability among applications. While that is the Holy Grail, developing secure multimedia applications and solutions in a distributed environment with competing technologies and emerging standards is an enormous challenge. During this workshop, we will explore ways in which a combination of emerging standards, emerging media formats, innovative solutions and technologies that enable new markets might drive both new applications and entirely new ways of managing content. We will provide an excellent overview of the relevant research, business and consumer challenges, as well as the potential impact of emerging optical media formats. We expect to cover multimedia security from several perspectives: researchers, consumers and content/service providers. Call for Papers The intention of this workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners from multimedia security communities (academia and industry) to share a vision of "Multimedia Security and Content Protection in this Rapidly Growing Digital World". That is, from identifying challenging problems that can shape the future of research, to practical applications and/or research that address issues posed by the convergence of television, computers and the Internet. IMS is also driving the notion of Next Generation Networks and Fixed Mobile Convergence by merging the fixed and mobile telecommunication networks with the Internet and the adoption of IP technologies within the telecom domain. >From a technology perspective the IMS represents conceptually a combination of fixed and mobile networks from the telecom domain with emerging VoIP and Internet applications in order to implement a seamless multimedia service environment. The international standardization of IMS was initiated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in 2000 and has resulted in first commercial implementations and first trial deployments around the world providing first experiences. The introduction of IMS is challenged today by the questions around business cases, IMS killer applications, migration strategies and interworking issues with existing and upcoming network and service platforms in converging networks. Topics In this special issue we would like to provide a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in IMS platform and applications development and deployment around the world. Papers presenting original contributions will also be considered, especially in special issues. However, their presentation should be accessible for all readers. Submissions of highly specialized and detailed technical papers should redirected to other journals, for example, the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. Mathematical equations should only be used to help the reader in understanding better the contents of the paper. In any case, it is recommended to avoid their use if possible. References should be limited to a maximum of 15 and should only be included to guide readers interesting in further increasing their knowledge on the topic. All references should be easily accessible for authors, for example through IEEE XPLORE or other sources. Call for Papers Special Issue of Journal of Autonomic and Trusted Computing on Autonomic and Trusted Computing Systems and Applications (URL: http://cs.okstate.edu/~xiaolin/joatc/CFP06.htm) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Deadline: June 15, 2006 (extended) As computer systems become increasingly large, complex and pervasive, their self-manageability and trustworthiness play critical roles in supporting next-generation science, engineering, and business applications. They provide computing services to large pools of users and applications, and thus are exposed to a number of dangers, such as, accidental/deliberate faults, virus infections, malicious attacks, illegal intrusions, and natural disasters. Identifying and rectifying problems in such complex systems which consist of several heterogeneous software/hardware/network components is non-trivial. As a result, too often computer systems fail, become compromised, or perform poorly. Therefore, it remains a challenge to design, analyze, evaluate, and improve the performance of trustworthy systems. Trusted computing targets computing and communication systems as well as services that are predictable, traceable, controllable, assessable, sustainable, dependable, and privacy protect-able. The scale and complexity of information systems evolve towards overwhelming the capability of system administrators, programmers, and designers. This calls for the autonomic computing paradigm, which meets the requirement of self-management by providing self-optimization, self-healing, self-configuration, and self-protection. As a promising means to implement trusted and self-managing systems, autonomic computing technology needs to be further explored. On the other hand, any autonomic system must be trustworthy to avoid the risk of losing control and retain confidence that the system will not fail. Trusted and autonomic computing and communications need synergistic research efforts covering many disciplines, ranging from computer science and engineering, the natural sciences, biological sciences, to social sciences. It requires scientific and technological advances in a wide variety of fields, as well as new software, system architectures, and communication systems that support the effective and coherent integration of the constituent technologies. Their inherent capacity for multiresolution representation akin to the operation of the human visual system motivated a quick adoption and widespread use of wavelets in image-processing applications. Indeed, wavelet-based algorithms have dominated image compression for over a decade, and wavelet-based source coding is now emerging in other domains. For example, recent wavelet-based video coders exploit techniques such as motion-compensated temporal filtering to yield effective video compression with full temporal, spatial, and fidelity scalability. Additionally, wavelets are increasingly used in the source coding of remote-sensing, satellite, and other geospatial imagery. Furthermore, wavelets are starting to be deployed beyond the source-coding realm with increased interest in robust communication of images and video over both wired and wireless networks. In particular, wavelets have been recently proposed for joint source-channel coding and multiple-description coding. This special issue will explore these and other latest advances in the theory and application of wavelets. Specifically, this special issue will gather high-quality, original contributions on all aspects of the application of wavelets and wavelet theory to the source coding, communication, and network transmission of images and video. Broadcasting networks especially designed for mobile broadcasting like DVB-H, DMB and MediaFLO are currently under deployment. On the other side, 2.5G and 3G cellular networks are already offering multimedia services like Mobile TV to mobile devices. Since the beginning of the workshop in 2003 several research and business challenges related to public WLAN were put forward. These challenges still need to be explored and market needs to converge while new developments continue. The challenges are: What is the overall network architecture and service model? How to roam through multiple wireless access providers with a unique service contract? How to decouple the wireless infrastructure providers from the Internet service (and content) providers? How to locate service facilities in the wireless access domain and how to match the available facilities with the user needs? How to exploit location and context information? How to provide differentiated service levels to different customers? How to achieve seamless interoperation between WLAN-based hotspots and cellular and other emerging wireless data networks? The last challenge, concerning seamless interoperation, is catching the most attention these days leading to activities in IEEE 802 and in 3GPP to move quickly towards finding standardized solutions. Now, more than ever, the theory of self-stabilization has tremendous impact in these areas. Therefore, this year, we are extending the scope of the symposium to cover all safety and security related aspects of self-* systems. The title of the conference has been changed to reflect this expansion. There will be three tracks: networking, safety and security, and self-* properties in static and dynamic systems. The symposium solicits contributions on all aspects of self-stabilization, safety and security, recovery oriented systems and programing, from theoretical contributions, to reports of the actual experience of applying the principles of self-stabilization to static and dynamic systems. But as the volumes of data grow, so does the importance of, and challenges associated with, multimedia content protection and security. To address these challenges, it is imperative to devise effective and flexible solutions. New technologies offer convenient ways to distribute and consume digital media; yet these new technologies also make it relatively easy to quickly and flawlessly copy digital data, posing tremendous challenges to protecting intellectual property rights. Multimedia security standards aim to define specifications that facilitate effective and flexible content protection schemes and promote interoperability among applications. While that is the Holy Grail, developing secure multimedia applications and solutions in a distributed environment with competing technologies and emerging standards is an enormous challenge. During this workshop, we will explore ways in which a combination of emerging standards, emerging media formats, innovative solutions and technologies that enable new markets might drive both new applications and entirely new ways of managing content. We will provide an excellent overview of the relevant research, business and consumer challenges, as well as the potential impact of emerging optical media formats. We expect to cover multimedia security from several perspectives: researchers, consumers and content/service providers. CALL FOR PAPERS The intention of this workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners from multimedia security communities (academia and industry) to share a vision of "Multimedia Security and Content Protection in this Rapidly Growing Digital World". That is, from identifying challenging problems that can shape the future of research, to practical applications and/or research that address issues posed by the convergence of television, computers and the Internet. The wireless way of communicating makes plant setup and modification easier, cheaper and more flexible. It provides a natural approach towards communication with mobile equipment where wires are in constant danger of breaking. It enables new applications where wireless transmission is the only option, e.g., measurements and control of rotating or highly mobile devices, and provides a novel approach to existing applications, e.g., localization and tracking of goods. Wireless technologies do, however, suffer from time-varying error rates, interference and security problems. This imposes a number of problems, especially in the industrial application field, where often tight constraints in terms of reliability, safety, dependability and real-time requirements have to be fulfilled in order to avoid severe financial losses or even damage to equipment or life. Several other issues may arise, including the interconnection of wireless systems with legacy industrial communication systems, the provisioning of support for proper system planning, configuration and commissioning of wireless industrial communication systems as well as power feeding problems. The goal of this special section is to attract theoretical and practical papers attacking the main issues and challenges concerning the adoption of wireless technologies in industrial communications; reporting about implementation experiences; describing and evaluating the design of new applications of wireless technologies in industrial and automation systems. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - Lower-layer protocols for ensuring efficient, reliable and timely data transmissions in industrial environments: physical layer, coding, MAC / link-layer techniques. - Wireless fieldbus systems, including hybrid wired/wireless systems and wireless extensions of wired configurations. - Wireless-aware, industrial type, higher-layer protocols. - Middleware for wireless industrial applications. - Standardization activities with special emphasis on wireless technologies for factory and industrial automation systems. - Security of wireless communication systems in industrial environments. - Applications of wireless technologies (incl. RFID) in factory/industrial automation systems, including innovative applications like wireless-based localization, tracking. - Field trials and low-level measurements (e.g., channel properties, interference) for the characterization of industrial environments. - System-level tools for wireless network planning and configuration in industrial settings. - Wireless power transmission in industrial environments. We seek original contributions not currently under review by other journals. All contributions must focus on industrial applications and requirements. Results obtained by simulations must be validated in bounds by experiments or analytical results. The novelty of the contributions should be clearly indicated and related to the current state of the art. At the same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shape future advances in wireless technology. With this in mind, this workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished work addressing experimental wireless networking issues. The workshop program will include regular paper presentations and an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and measurement results. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research.
