This is a significant deterrent to the ability to easily interconnect in a secure and spontaneous manner among disparate organizations. In fact, corporate wireless networks are generally run with severe access policies that do not offer access to guests. Public wireless networks typically do not support roaming agreements, so that users have to be a customer of the specific network provider or to "instantly" (and costly) buy access. Coalition access control encompasses mechanisms dealing with access between users and services of two or more different security domains. These mechanism are typically based on contractually or implicitly agreed collaboration between organizations. They are targeted to medium or long-term periods of inter-organizational coalition. Some real examples are supply chain management, international joint projects, logistics service, etc. The overhead to set up these mechanisms can be significant, as the access control mechanisms for resources of the participating partners require common inter-organizational agreements. The inter-provider agreements that allow users to roam across different wireless providers can be seen as a form of coalition access control. Work on the definition of architecture and protocols for inter-provider roaming is ongoing in several standardization fora or industry initiatives (3GPP, ETSI, ECMA, IRAP …) Spontaneous coalition access control investigates access mechanisms based on informally formed coalition scenarios. These informal coalition scenarios are strongly connected to particular contextual situations: for example communication sessions like calls, conferencing, and Instant Messaging (IM) or informal physical contacts that occur in meeting rooms, offices, and hallways. It is not possible to establish traditional "formal" cross-organizational agreements within these spontaneous coalition encounters. Anyway, access to local resources still need to respect corporate access policies. The notion of spontaneous coalition access implies an increase in the number of un-verified access points and presents a serious security issue. User mobility, wireless connectivity and the widespread diffusion of portable devices raise new challenges for ubiquitous service provisioning. Devices that participate in spontaneous coalition scenarios can introduce "new" foreign services into the environment; due to their mobility these device can change location changing the availability of resources and services un-predictably. Access control to resources is crucial to leverage the provision of ubiquitous services and calls for novel solutions based on various context information, e.g., user/device location, device properties, user needs, local resource visibility. ============================================================ Call for Submissions The workshop is interested in contributions addressing areas associated with mobile and ubiquitous architectures, infrastructure, data and services as related to Ubiquitous Access Control. Mesh routers form a wireless backbone via multi-hop ad-hoc networking but with minimal-mobility. The mesh backbone provides network access for both wired and wireless clients including mesh clients, and enables the integration of various wired and wireless networks. Mesh clients can run as a mobile ad hoc network. However, in order to achieve much better network performance, it is always preferable for them to work under the coordination of mesh routers. Due to the existence of a mesh backbone, wireless mesh networks possess many advantages over other wireless networks, and are expected to be one of the most promising wireless networking technologies. Despite recent progresses in wireless mesh networks, many research issues still remain. This special issue is dedicated to state-of-the-art research achievements in the area of wireless mesh networking. The papers must focus on research problems that are specific to wireless mesh networking, rather than on generic topics of ad-hoc or multi-hop networking. This special issue will cover all aspects of wireless mesh networking. Technology has gone through tremendous changes in terms of security, access techniques, protocol stacks, bandwidth usage and also convergence into packet switching based on All-IP network from the conventional circuit switched techniques. Complexity has increased due to the introduction of different access technologies, available services, and other aspects as mentioned above during the telecom evolution for the past 20 years. Pressure is mounting to harmonize various technologies under a common IP backbone so that seamless handover can be provided that exploits the benefits of available radio access technologies. Seamless handover should be achieved not only for Inter-Technology but also for Inter-Operator handover. Operators and the consumers will be greatly benefited in terms of cost effectiveness, enhanced features, location independence and ease of use through the introduction of seamless heterogeneous handover mechanisms. Several standardization activities have already started working on technical solutions for seamless handover. One of the well known activities is that of next-generation networks (NGN) making use of IMS based solution for service provisioning and handover between fixed and mobile operators. Within 3GPP and 3GPP2, activities are on-going to provision handover between different technologies and recently, in 3GPP, between different domains. This activity within 3GPP falls under All-IP Network (AIPN) System Architecture Evolution (SAE)/Radio Access Network (RAN) Long Term Evolution (LTE). IEEE 802 is also looking into media-independent handover (MIH) in 802.21 while 802.11u is working on inter-technology handover. Handover enhancement within IEEE 802.11 is taking place within Task Group R (TGr). IETF has produced some solutions in the seamoby working group while further enhancements are being done in various other groups including mobopts, mipshop and mobike. Along with standardization activities, various operators and vendors are also involved in developing harmonized solution for heterogeneous networks, like, UMA. At the same time a lot of research and development activities are taking place by academia, research institutes and industries too. So far, the work has focused on one specific topic of handover such as security, QoS, and routing. However, the focus should be on developing an end-to-end network perspective that covers the whole span of the network from radio aspects to OSS aspects that includes value added services. Cross-layer protocol engineering along with application-oriented signaling protocols, and creation of new services will be required for efficient network resource utilization and to bring profitability to the service providers. The symposium on “Next Generation Mobile Networks” will provide a timely technical forum for the dissemination of new results in this exciting research area. It will cover key aspects of B3G/4G mobile networks, particularly architectures, protocols and management techniques to coordinate heterogeneous wireless access networks and integrate them into a common core network, and services and applications that take advantage of this integrated network platform. The associated communication channels and traffic patterns in mobile wireless networks are more unpredictable than the traditional wire-line networks. On the other hand, the future multimedia applications impose stringent and diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, which cannot be satisfactorily addressed through the traditional layering network-protocol architecture. Correspondingly, a cross-layer design paradigm would be needed to achieve transmission protocol stack performance while meeting these new challenges in QoS requirements. The cross-layer designs and protocols tend to be very essential approaches for the mobile wireless and ad hoc networks where unpredictable variables such as node mobility, node density, network dimensions make the diverse and stringent wireless QoS requirements even harder to satisfy. Cross-layer designs and protocols are the emerging research areas where some early results have recently been reported in the literatures, but the upcoming new applications and more stringent/diverse wireless QoS requirements open even more new opportunities for many interesting and comprehensive research topics targeting at concepts, methodologies, and techniques to support the future advanced mobile wireless applications. Clearly, the developments of the new schemes, mechanisms, and systems associated with the cross-layer designs and protocols will have a significant impact on the next generation of mobile wireless communications and networks. PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ---------------------------- Authors are strongly encouraged to (but not required to) submit a 150 word abstract of their paper along with three keywords by the abstract submission deadline (February 24, 2006). Acceptable formats for the abstracts are plain text, postscript (PS) and portable document format (PDF). Submissions should not exceed 14 pages (including a 150 word abstract, all figures, tables and references) in Springer Verlag LNCS format. Acceptable formats for papers are PS and PDF. Submissions which are not in the appropriate format will be rejected without review. All papers will be reviewed for technical merit. Each accepted paper will be published in the conference proceedings, provided at least one author of the paper registers to present the paper at the conference. All abstract and paper submissions will be handled electronically at the conference website. "Ubicomp" or "percomp" can be regarded as the computing of all these intelligent/smart things/u-things, that are essential elements and components of the SW. A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive, reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient, perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking. Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from the ubiquitous world with universal services of any means/place/time to the SW of trustworthy services with the right means/place/time. UIC-06 is a successor of the 2nd Int'l Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds (UISW2005, Japan, Dec. 2005) which succeeds the 1st Int'l Workshop on Ubiquitous Smart Worlds (USW2005,Taipei, Mar. 2005). Dynamic control of connection oriented networks entails the implementation of capabilities within the network for state information management, resource allocation, decision making, and action invocation. We call for research that takes these observations further, engaging with leisure as a new domain for technology research. The success of advanced services in mobile environments requires integrative approaches embracing video signal processing and networking technology. The interlinking of these research fields is fostering the development of underlying technology and workflows for mobile video. These technologies, generally hidden to the user, will be pre-requisite to allow for efficient multimedia support of digital communication and leisure time over wireless channels. This special issue will report the results of latest research efforts on video communication in mobile environments. The main goal of this special issue is to collate and disseminate the most relevant achievements of researchers working on video signal processing and communication for mobile applications. High quality contributions addressing related theoretical and practical aspects are solicited.
