This special issue covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the "hot" area of ad hoc and sensor networking. It concentrates on the network layer problems which can be divided into two groups: data communication, and topology control problems. In data communication problems, such as routing, quality-of-service routing, geocasting, multicasting, and broadcasting, the primary goal is to fulfill a given communication task successfully between nodes in ad hoc network. The secondary task is to minimize the communication overhead and power consumption by battery operated nodes. Topology control problems are further subdivided into neighbour discovery and network organization problems. In the neighbour discovery problem, the problem is to detect neighboring nodes located within transmission radius. In the network organization problem, each node should decide what communication links to establish with neighbouring nodes (an example is Bluetooth scatternet formation problem), and what power management schemes to adopt (examples are "sleep" period operations and adjusting transmission radii). Sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research activities are booming recently. The applications of sensor networks are envisioned primarily for monitoring the environment (e.g. motion detection, chemicals, temperature) or as embedded systems (e.g. biomedical sensor engineering). This special issue will also review ongoing research on this "hot" topic, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. Wireless mesh networks are expected to be a key element of this future. In a wireless mesh network, mobile devices or networks cooperatively establish mulit-hop, or even multi-radio communication paths in a dynamic environment, providing an alternative form of wireless connectivity. To achieve scalability and performance, such a network must manage complex tradeoffs among factors such as coverage, throughput/delay and QoS support. Many such networks must also be able to support self-organizing and self-healing modes of operation. The emergence of wireless PAN, LAN, and MAN technologies and an ever-growing demand for connectivity suggest that wireless mesh networks will play an important role in the future development of the Wireless Internet. The importance and timeliness of this topic is confirmed by the many start-up companies defining technology and products in this space, as well as the work of standards bodies such as the IEEE 802.11s Working Group. The goal of this workshop is to bring together an international group of academics, researchers, and industry practitioners to a) provide a view of the state-of-art, b) identify outstanding challenges and c) present current research on all aspects of mesh networks. The workshop will therefore include panel discussion and invited speakers, as well as papers selected through this CFP. Scope: ===== Web services are nowadays emerging as a major technology for deploying automated interactions between distributed and heterogeneous applications. Various standards support this deployment including WSDL, UDDI, and SOAP. These standards respectively support the definition of Web services, their advertisement to the community of potential users, and finally their binding for invocation purposes. In general, composing Web services rather than accessing a single service is essential and provides better benefits to users. Composition primarily addresses the situation of a user's request that cannot be satisfied by any available service, whereas a composite service obtained by combining available services might be used. Several questions raise during Web services composition and execution including which businesses have the capacity to provision Web services, when and where the provisioning of Web services occurs, and how Web services from independent parties coordinate their activities during execution so that conflicts are avoided. To address some of these questions, it is recommended considering the context in which the composition and execution of Web services occur. Context is generally perceived as the information that characterizes the interaction between humans, applications, and the surrounding environment. From a Web services perspective, it is expected that context should define a set of common data about the current status of a Web service and its capability of collaborating with other peers, possibly enacted by distinct providers. For example before a Web service agrees to participate in a composite service its status in terms of current participation is assessed. Moreover, before a back-up strategy is deployed an assessment of the exception that a Web service has raised is needed. On one front, considerable progress has been made on traffic matrix estimation. Solutions have been proposed to estimate the amount of traffic flowing between any pair of ingress and egress points within an IP network simply based on the total amount of traffic recorded over IP links. On another front, efforts are being made to detect the state of the network from end to end measurements using inference techniques or to infer the traffic workload by exploiting application behavior. In essence, the full instrumentation of the state of an IP network is still considered a cost prohibitive task and inference may be the only tool we have to understand the behavior of such large scale systems. The potential benefits of the proposed estimation techniques can be great. Accurate measurement of an IP traffic matrix is essential for network design and planning. Moreover, accurate estimation of the network state can facilitate troubleshooting and performance evaluation. The focus of this workshop will be on the state of the art of large-scale network inference techniques in these areas and their potential applications. More specifically, we will solicit papers on the evaluation of the proposed techniques and their possible shortcomings. Of particular interest are papers that address the impact of estimation errors on the applications making use of traffic matrices and network tomography techniques. Lastly, we are interested in understanding the future of this area and its impact on network design and management. We solicit 6-page long papers that present work in progress related to the following topics: traffic matrix estimation techniques passive and active network tomography techniques validation methods scalability, robustness, sensitivity issues in large scale inference adaptive and continuous network inference practical applications and operational experience impact of sampling errors on estimation accuracy The accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings, while an extended abstract of the submitted paper will be available in a special issue of Performance Evaluation Review (PER), which is sent to all Sigmetrics members and appears in the ACM digital library. Call for Papers GMW05 10. Europäische Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Medien in der Wissenschaft 13.-16. September 2005 in Rostock ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, ich freue mich sehr Ihnen mitteilen zu dürfen, dass die zehnte Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Medien in der Wissenschaft e.V. (GMW) vom 13. bis 16. September 2005 an der Universität Rostock durchgeführt wird. Auf der GMW05 werden unter dem diesjährigen Motto Auf zu neuen Ufern! erneut die digitalen Medien in der Hochschullehre thematisiert. Die GMW05 möchte neben Neuem bewusst auch die ursprünglichen Tagungsschwerpunkte in das Blickfeld rücken und diese zukunftsorientiert weiterentwickeln. Auf der GMW05 sollen die bestehenden didaktischen Ebenen (Lernmaterialien, Lehr-/Lernszenarien, Organisation und Bildungsnetzwerke) mit den Querschnittsthemen (Strategie, Qualitätssicherung, Didaktik, Curricula- und Kompetenzentwicklung) in Verbindung gesetzt werden. Ein neues Ufer, zu dem wir aufbrechen wollen, ist die internationale Dimension: Bietet E-Learning Potentiale für die Umsetzung der Bologna-Deklaration? To push forward the changes successfully begun by John Wroclawski, CCR is starting a new life with the April 2005 issue, with a new editor in chief (Christophe Diot from Intel Research) and a new editorial board (see names below). The goal is for CCR to strengthen its role as the network community newsletter in which we are each involved and contribute. CCR will publish papers in the general field of data communications characterized primarily by quality of the work and timeliness of publication. CCR will encourage publication of "works in progress", provided they are of good caliber. Experience papers, system papers, and papers reproducing others' results, should find a home in CCR, as long as the quality is high enough and useful to the community. To achieve the quality and timeliness goals, the reviewing turn-over will be three months, with an implicit submission deadline every quarter. The decisions will be either accept or reject. Each paper will be published with a public review that will synthesize the reviewers' opinion. In addition to papers, CCR will publish a news-like section which will include articles based on input from research community members - faculty members, junior researchers, students, industry researchers, etc. The scope for such articles will span topics such as interviews of research scientists and industry leaders, editorials, conference reports, summary standards, NSF or European Commission user manuals, arguments on a research topic, outrageous opinion column, favorite hits, What's Worth Reading, and so on. To conclude, we ask networking researchers (and SIGCOMM members in particular) to take to heart that CCR is your newsletter and its content is made by you! Please send your short columns, editorials, articles, etc. We will review them and strive our best to publish them. In particular, a strong orientation of these systems towards human needs as opposed to a pure implementation of the technologically possible seems absolutely central. In order to achieve these goals, our technical systems will have to act more independently, flexibly, and autonomously, i.e. they will have to exhibit life-like properties. We call those systems "organic". Hence, an "Organic Computing System" is a technical system, which adapts dynamically to the current conditions of its environment. It will be self-organizing, selfconfiguring, self-healing, self-protecting, self-explaining, and context-aware. The vision of Organic Computing and its fundamental concepts arose independently in different research areas like Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, and Computer Engineering. Self-organizing systems have been studied for quite some time by mathematicians, sociologists, physicists, economists, and computer scientists, but so far almost exclusively based on strongly simplified artificial models. Central aspects of Organic Computing systems have been and will be inspired by an analysis of information processing in biological systems. It is the objective of this workshop to bring together computer scientists with researchers from neighboring disciplines - like physics, chemistry, economics, biology - to allow them to benefit from their knowledge in the fields of self-organization and emergence. This is an interdisciplinary workshop. This means that breadth and understandability beyond the own special interest group is highly encouraged. A special Working Group on Cooperative Networks (CoNets) has been established within the WWRF (Wireless World Research Forum) to undertake these issues. Seamless Communication: Heterogeneity in CoNets refers to service support, user devices, network access, resource and mobility management, medium access control, baseband algorithms, radio technology, and so on. In this scenario, the main challenging goal is to allow a mobile user to seamlessly communicate throughout multiple heterogeneous networks (cellular, wireless and wired networks, including "moving" and "ad-hoc" networks), and to enjoy multiparty multimedia applications while on the move between different administrative domains. Self-Organization & Cross-Layer Design: Certainly there are particular cooperation and coordination problems found in CoNets that significantly differ from those in more traditional domains. The future cooperative network is, in fact, expected to self-organize dynamically in an optimum manner in order to offer seamless services with agreed quality to users and devices irrespective of location and network connection. This implies careful optimization across the entire protocol stack. Ideally, cooperative connectivity shall be transparent to the various transport technologies used among nodes in the network. New APIs: Relations between cooperative networks are expected to be established dynamically, always providing a securely protected environment to users. Mobile terminals should be able to discover candidates available networks, therefore new APIs should enable applications to detect available access networks and learn their characteristics, thus becoming aware of location, context, and QoS. Cooperative Networking: Special kinds of wireless networks included in CoNets are the so-called "moving networks" (NEMO), consisting of one or more mobile routers with connected devices changing their point of attachment to other networks while physically moving or changing topology. New resource management schemes for cooperative heterogeneous wireless access networks are required. Cooperative Access Control & PHY Technologies: Furthermore, recently, the idea of using a mobile station as a relay between a source and a destination node is making CoNets a new diversity enabler. Cooperating users transmit their own information towards the destination node as well as optimally processed relaying information from other users. In this way, CoNets also offer a viable fading countermeasure and a shadowing alleviation means. The increased traffic requires entirely novel mechanisms at the MAC, as well as new approaches to distributed coding and transceiver design. The new wireless data and multimedia services that are added and supported on wireless networks alongside the traditional voice services pose formidable challenges to these networks in their effort to satisfy strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. These challenges are further exasperated by the inherent transmission impairments of wireless links (fading, noise) and user mobility. To cope with the challenges related to supporting both the existing and the ever increasing new services, next generation wireless technologies will need to fine tune and/or incorporate new sets of traffic control procedures. This special section will be focusing on two such control procedures related to wireless medium sharing and network overload. A well designed Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol reduces system costs by maximizing system capacity while successfully integrating different classes of traffic (e.g., voice, data, multimedia) and optimally allocating the limited radio channel bandwidth among them. Congestion control poses yet additional set of challenges to wireless network providers. Network congestion is difficult to resolve when real-time traffic, sensitive to both latency and packet loss, is present, without jeopardizing the QoS expected by the users of that traffic. Call Admission Control (CAC) is a strategy used to limit the number of call connections into the network in order to reduce network congestion, therefore enabling the system to provide the desired QoS to newly incoming as well as existing calls. The mobility of users adds challenging requirements to the Call Admission Control Mechanism. When mobile users change their point of attachment, the end-to-end path may be changed while they still expect to receive the same QoS. This implies that the new end-to-end path should also support the existing QoS (i.e., a reservation on the new path may be required). Topics of interest This highly selective special section of the ACM MC2R aims at providing a state-of-the-art reference of the current research in the fields of Medium Access Control Protocols and Call Admission Control Algorithms for next generation wireless networks. Similarly, newer multimedia standards such as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC provide significant improvements in compression, and specifications such as 3GPP Version 6 provide the ability to adapt the multimedia delivery for wireless networks with varying transmission characteristics and mobile devices with different capabilities. The goal of this special issue is to present a concise reference of state-of-the-art efforts in delivering multimedia over emerging packet-based broadband wireless networks. Specifically, the special issue is intended to present tutorials, survey and original research articles (in a tutorial manner readable by non-specialists) on emerging architectures, protocols and services for delivering multimedia over single-hop or mesh broadband wireless networks. It also focuses on the protocols needed to integrate the application layer requirements, such as QoS, security, etc., with the base functionality offered by the standardized 802.16/11 and other WLAN and WMAN interfaces. Of particular interest is the inter-play between newer techniques of multimedia encoding and streaming and the network-layer features to exploit these techniques. Various technologies have contributed to this success, including: mobile communication networks, such as GPRS and UMTS, the family of Broadband Radio Access Networks, like IEEE 802.11 and HIPERLAN, and wireless broadcasting technologies, like Digital Video Broadcasting (DVBsatellite and terrestrial). Apart from the evolutionary paths of individual technologies, considerable interest has been expressed recently on the additional benefits that may arise from their joint exploitation, through an integrated networking infrastructure that comprises multiple wireless networks (of which some, maybe all, differ in technology), overlapping in common coverage area(s) and interconnected by an IP backbone which acts as the unifying glue that binds the heterogeneous environment together. However, many interesting and important traffic engineering, technological and performance issues need to be addressed and resolved before a global and wide-scale integrated broadband network infrastructure can be established for the efficient support and provisioning of demanding and diverge services. Such systems allow intelligent dense monitoring of physical environments, which makes them immensely useful for data collection and analysis. While much ongoing research has addressed networking, communication and low-level self-configuration issues in such systems, there are also significant challenges pertaining to systematic design, algorithm development and analysis, and abstract modeling in order to achieve efficient and robust realizations of large-scale distributed sensor systems. The large number of sensor devices involved, severe power, computational and memory limitations, resource heterogeneity, dense deployment and frequent failures pose novel challenges to design, algorithms, analysis and implementation. The focus of the conference is on distributed computing issues in large-scale networked sensor systems (including algorithms, applications, and systematic design techniques and tools), but networking-related contributions that support high level abstractions are also welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Computation and programming models - Energy models, minimization, awareness - Distributed algorithms for collaborative information processing - Theoretical performance analysis: complexity, correctness, scalability, fault-tolerance - Abstractions for modular design - Languages, operating systems - Task allocation, reprogramming and reconfiguration - Dynamic resource management - Scalable, heterogeneous architectures (node and system-level) - Middleware interfaces, communication and processing primitives - Design, simulation and optimization tools for deployment and operation - Design automation and application synthesis techniques - Case studies: lessons from real world deployments Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research on computational aspects of distributed sensor systems. Submitted manuscripts may not exceed 14 single-spaced pages using 12-point size font on 8.5x11 inch pages, including figures and tables. References may be included in addition to the 14 pages. Authors need to make sure that the electronically submitted files are formatted for 8.5x11 inch paper. Submissions will be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference attendees. Submitted papers may not have appeared in or be under consideration for another conference or a journal.
