Innovations in media processing, storage, retrieval and networking promise to enable anywhere and anytime multimedia solutions, across a wide spectrum of commercial, educational, entertainment and consumer domains. Though there is not yet defined a real "killer application", the most foreword looking ones are touted to be multimedia based, optimised over the IP layer. Supporting streaming multimedia applications and services over next generation wireless and wireline telecommunication networks is challenging due to constraints such as high heterogeneity, high-rate limited bandwidth, randomly time-varying network interference, stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements, interoperability, etc. The objective of this session is to present state-of-the-art research and developing activities contributing to all facets of multimedia streaming across next generation all-IP networks. The session will serve as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art research, development, and implementations of networked multimedia systems and technologies with special emphasis on multimedia streaming. CALL FOR PAPERS The 14th International Workshop on Network and Operating Systems Support for Digital Audio and Video (NOSSDAV 2004) June 16-18, 2004 --- Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland http://www.nossdav.org/2004/ NOSSDAV 2004 will take place in Kinsale on the exceptionally scenic southern coast of Ireland. Kinsale is approximatly a 20 minute drive outside Cork city, which is within easy reach of major European capitals and the east coast of the US. Ad hoc networking covers multi-hop scenarios (network nodes communicating via other network nodes) such as conference, hospital, battlefield, rescue, and monitoring scenarios. Particular ad hoc network systems include packet radio networks, sensor networks, personal communication systems, rooftop networks, and wireless local area networks. Even multi-hop cellular networks may be a viable option when a huge number of cellular phones are concentrated on a small area such as stadium. This special issue will cover comprehensively the network layer in ad hoc networks, which deals with data communication and topology control problems. Data communication problems include routing, broadcasting, multicasting, geocasting, clustering, area monitoring, data and service access. Topology control problems include neighbor discovery, topology construction and maintenance, activity scheduling, position discovery, partition detection, location updates, and network management. The new approaches to ad hoc networks design emphasize cross-layering approach, and therefore the relevant issues arising from network layer problems will also be covered, such as power management, security, quality of service, performance evaluation, data link and transport layers. The goal of the special issue is to publish original research and review articles which should be comprehensive to all readers, regardless of their specialty. Operators have already made huge investments in 2G, 2G+ and 3G technologies. Moreover, future wireless infrastructures will have to compete with multiple successfully deployed wired and wireless communications' systems. Thus, the 4G era has to provide really break-through technologies in order to persuade for its necessity. Innovations in air interface technology, enhancements in signalling and transport protocols, end-to-end QoS, worldwide seamless mobility of terminals and personal bubbles will lead to next generation wireless networks. Research on all these areas has been initiated, and it is expected to provide impressive results in a couple of years. Besides the system and network infrastructure advances, innovative steps are also required in the applications and services domain. Evolution towards 4G is expected to be similar to what happened to the Internet: from a limited application environment to an integral part of average person's life. Wireless services will shift from voice to packet data and users will become more accustomed to conducting wireless business and financial transactions. Many future wireless applications have already been considered. Mobile Internet, mobile multiparty videoconference, mobile office, mobile VPNs, mobile tele-presence, mobile e-commerce, etc. are among the foreseen future applications, but none has already convinced that it is the "killer" one. This special issue of IEEE Wireless Communications aims to describe the future service creation, execution and provisioning environments, frameworks and platforms, trends in the direction towards new added value applications and services, applications and services that will enable new business models and new ways of working anywhere, anytime and in any context, and share this vision with the magazines' audience. HSNMC'04 is organized by academic, research, and industrial societies and will be held in Toulouse, France, from Wednesday June 30, 2004 to Friday July 2, 2004. The state-of-the-art WLAN can support up to 54 Mbps transmission rate using the 5GHz unlicensed bands. While today¡¯s WLANs are considered wireless Ethernet by virtue of supporting best-effort services, the needs for Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning across the wireless link are arising, for example, in order to support audio/video (AV) traffic within home wirelessly. It is widely known that the current WLAN technologies are vulnerable to the security attacks, and in order to make the WLAN more accepted, making it more secure is a key requirement. The WLAN are also considered as a complementary technology for the 3G wireless thanks to its high-speed network speed along with the low cost. For a wider acceptance in the market, the WLAN technologies should be evolved such that they support QoS provisioning, secure communications, interworking with other wireless networks, extended operation times of batter-powered devices, seamless mobility supports, fair bandwidth sharing with other wireless devices. This special issue solicits the state-of-the-art research papers on emerging WLAN technologies and applications. The state-of-the-art WLAN can support up to 54 Mbps transmission rate using the 5GHz unlicensed bands. While today¡¯s WLANs are considered wireless Ethernet by virtue of supporting best-effort services, the needs for Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning across the wireless link are arising, for example, in order to support audio/video (AV) traffic within home wirelessly. It is widely known that the current WLAN technologies are vulnerable to the security attacks, and in order to make the WLAN more accepted, making it more secure is a key requirement. The WLAN are also considered as a complementary technology for the 3G wireless thanks to its high-speed network speed along with the low cost. For a wider acceptance in the market, the WLAN technologies should be evolved such that they support QoS provisioning, secure communications, interworking with other wireless networks, extended operation times of batter-powered devices, seamless mobility supports, fair bandwidth sharing with other wireless devices. This special issue solicits the state-of-the-art research papers on emerging WLAN technologies and applications. Topics of interest include, but not limited to: - QoS supports in WLANs - Security enhancements of WLANs - Mobility managements/supports and location-based services - Interworking with 2.5G, 3G, and other wireless networks - Power control and management for energy-efficient WLANs - Resource and spectrum management in WLANs - Co-existence with other networks including Bluetooth - WLAN-based in-home networking - New MACs and higher-speed PHYs for WLANs - Evaluation of emerging WLAN standards The manuscripts should be submitted as an e-mail attachment in PDF format to Sunghyun Choi at schoi(a)snu.ac.kr. The issue of integrating mobile devices in the Internet poses many challenges such as the design and evaluation of protocols,the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and the cross-layer interactions.
