In this context, the communication devices, the objects with which they interact, or both may be mobile. The implementation of such a paradigm requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, and discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services. The first ACM Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: networking and services (Mobiquitous 04) will cover all these aspects, representing a forum where practitioners and researchers coming from the many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions design and deployment will be able to interact exchanging the cross-layer experiences needed to build the overall ubiquitous systems. Areas addressed by the conference include: applications, service-oriented computing, middleware, networking, agents, knowledge management and databases. PAPERS: Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, are solicited. The conference is interested in contributions addressing all the areas associated with mobile and ubiquitous architectures, infrastructure and services. Technical works clearly identifying how the specific contributions fit to an overall working solution are particularly of interest. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following feature topics: * Ubiquitous architectures and systems * Wearable computing and personal area network * Wireless technologies for mobile and ubiquitous communications (Bluetooth, ZigBee, 802.15.x, WiFi) * Wireless Internet access in ubiquitous systems * Reconfigurability and personalization of wireless network * Service discovery mechanisms, knowledge discovery, matching and composition mechanisms * Wireless/mobile service management and delivery * Security, privacy and social issues of mobile and ubiquitous systems * Peer-to-peer knowledge management * Emerging industrial/business scenarios * Multimodal interfaces (speech, video kinetic, tactile) * Smart spaces * Ad hoc and sensor networking * Localization and tracking * Context and location aware application * Multimedia encoding and transcoding * Middleware services * Agent technologies in ubiquitous, wearable, and mobile systems * Hardware and software platforms for ubiquitous systems, and testbeds * User interfaces * Toolkits, development environments, and languages for ubiquitous computing * Ontologies for mobile and ubiquitous computing SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically (see the conference web page for details). Authors should prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF) or postscript version of their full paper. Papers must not exceed 8 pages double column (US Letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references. The font size must be at least 10 points. PUBLICATION: All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed by technical program committee members. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Papers of particular merit will be proposed for publication in the ACM/Kluwer Wireless Networks journal. TUTORIALS: Proposals for tutorials are solicited. Evaluation of tutorial proposals will be based on the expertise and experience of the instructors, and on the relevance of the subject matter. Potential instructors are requested to submit a tutorial proposal of at most 5 pages, including a biographical sketch, to the Tutorial Chair by March 1, 2004. Building on the successes of previous workshops, the objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners working in this area to discuss recent and innovative results, and identify future directions and challenges in developing practical systems where predictable and controlled performance is a central requirement. In particular, we look to reconsider and expand the scope of the workshop to include all work related to QoS --- in networking (wired, wireless and sensor networks), operating systems, servers, advanced middleware services (such as grid computing and peer-to-peer systems), and to address relevant technical issues such as availibity, reliability, security, pricing, incentives as well as performance. CALL FOR PAPERS ACM/Kluwer Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) Special Issue on "Energy Constraints and Lifetime Performance in Wireless Sensor Networks" Wireless sensor networks have been undergoing a revolution that promises to have a significant impact throughout society, one that could quite possibly dwarf previous milestones in the information revolution. These networks consist of battery-powered nodes that are endowed with a multitude of sensing modalities. The demand for these networks is spurred by numerous applications that require in-situ, unattended, high-precision, real-time observation over a vast area. Such networks are more than simply the next step in the evolution of the personal computer or the Internet. Instead, wireless sensor networks operate under a set of unique constraints and requirements that demand more than merely incremental improvements in, or modifications of, traditional technologies. In particular, although there have been significant improvements in processor design and computing, advances in battery technology still lag behind, making energy resource the ultimate bottleneck in wireless sensor networking. The purpose of this issue is to disseminate state-of-the-art approaches and novel techniques that will advance basic knowledge and understanding of wireless sensor networks. We are particularly interested in soliciting papers that study fundamental performance limits and tradeoffs that are brought about by energy constraints and that are unique to the wireless sensor networks. Darüber hinaus ist aber die Fähigkeit zur semantischen Selbstorganisation notwendig, zur spontanen und automatischen Kooperation multimedialer Dienste und Geräte zur Erkennung und Erfüllung der Nutzerbedürfnisse. Die Entwicklung von hierfür geeigneten Software-Technologien ist Gegenstand aktueller Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten. Ziel: Ziel dieses Workshops ist die Vorstellung und kritische Diskussion aktueller Lösungsansätze für selbstorganisierende Multimedia-Appliances vor dem Hintergrund der Einsetzbarkeit in der Praxis. Wir wollen ein Anforderungsportfolio für die praxisorientierte Weiterentwicklung dieser Konzepte entwickeln und Strategien für die Koordination der verschiedenen Entwicklungsaktivitäten identifizieren. However, building physical interfaces is non-trivial, requiring knowledge of low-level hardware and software details. These difficulties echo the experiences of the GUI community twenty years ago. Tangible user interface (TUI) toolkits have the potential to simplify physical prototyping just as GUI toolkits have improved graphical prototyping. This workshop will be a collaboration between tangible user interface designers and toolkit developers. TUI designers should give perspectives on the domain they are designing for, prototyping techniques they use, and difficulties they encounter. Toolkit developers should present their toolkit solution or project, and its particular strengths and weaknesses for rapidly prototyping TUIs. Middleware is systems software that resides between the applications and the underlying operating systems, network protocol stacks, and hardware. Information processing in sensor networks is an interdisciplinary research area, which spans the areas of signal processing/detection/estimation, networking and protocols, embedded systems, data bases and information management, as well as distributed algorithms. It opens up new research venues, which include sensor tasking and control, tracking and localization, probabilistic reasoning, sensor data fusion, distributed data bases, communication protocols and theory that address network coverage, connectivity, and capacity, as well as system/software architecture and design methodologies. Moreover, all these issues have to consider many cross-cutting requirements such as efficiency/cost tradeoff, robustness, self-organization, fault-tolerance, timeliness, scalability, and network longevity. Topics of Interest This special issue calls for articles that highlight technical issues from physical device design, signal processing, network protocols/algorithms, to revolutionary new applications enabled by sensor network technology. In particular, we are seeking contributions in all aspects of sensor networks. Of particular interests are (i) Articles that summarize the fundamental performance and behavior limits of sensor networks with respect to sensor network capacity, coverage, connectivity, and/or lifetime. As wireless sensor networks must operate under extreme resource constraints, an understanding of the fundamental performance limits of such networks will provide valuable insights into what designs make sense and can help identify areas in which theory promises performance much better than that attained by existing designs. (ii) Articles that outline algorithms which realize certain sensor network operation, such as localization, time synchronization and target tracking, and their theoretical base. Articles of this type should focus on comparing alternative algorithms/approaches with respect to the various sensor network requirements outlined above. (iii) Articles that deal with system implementations, experiments, and experiences in application domains. At an early stage of sensor network development, one can analyze and predict network behavior through simulation and theoretical reasoning. However, a true evaluation of system performance can only be obtained through implementation and direct measurement and experimentation of the prototype. Hence articles that report the system implementation issues with an emphasis on the cross-layer design tradeoffs will shed lights on how effective the overall system design is. In particular, although there have been significant improvements in processor design and computing, advances in battery technology still lag behind, making energy resource the ultimate bottleneck in wireless sensor networking. The purpose of this issue is to disseminate state-of-the-art approaches and novel techniques that will advance basic knowledge and understanding of wireless sensor networks. The effort to develop such heterogeneous networks is linked with many technical challenges including seamless vertical handovers across WLAN and 3G radio technologies, security, 3G-based authentication, unified accounting & billing, WLAN sharing (by several 3G networks), consistent QoS and service provisioning, etc. The need to address these issues and provide timely, solid technical contributions in the area of WLAN/3G integration establishes the motivation behind this special issue proposal. In response to the above demand for integrated WLAN/3G mobile data networks, the proposed special issue aims at providing a timely and concise reference of the current activities and findings in the relevant technical fields. The primary goal is to address the key technical issues pertaining to WLAN/3G integration and present novel technical contributions. The concept of 'smart object' is defined as the junction between miniaturization with the development of wireless communications. The The increasing reliance of business-to-business and business to consumer applications on networked information systems dramatically magnifies the consequence of damages resulting from even simple system faults and intrusions, making the task of assuring confidentiality, availability and integrity of information difficult. Although several piecemeal solutions address concerns related to the security and fault tolerance of various components of such networksed information systems, there is a growing need to leverage the synergy between security and survivability to provide a higher level of information assurance in the face of faults and attacks. We seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, systems-related and work in-progress in the area of Information Assurance at the network and system levels.
