A confluence of technological advances marks the advent of a new era. World data volume is growing at an unprecedented pace, much of it from embedded devices. AI/ML technology promise unprecedented levels of automation in system operation and data processing. Smart cities grow, fed by millions of data points from multitudes of human and physical sources, together with machine intelligence algorithms that extract value for applications. Cyber-attacks grow more nefarious, bringing down physical systems. Social media are becoming ubiquitous, offering additional information on physical things. The separation between cyber, physical, and social systems is blurring. Collectively, these developments lead to the emergence of a new multi-disciplinary field, where the networking and physical realms meet, often in social spaces. It is the field of the Internet of Things (IoT). This conference is an interdisciplinary forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, industry and government to discuss challenges, technologies, and emerging directions in IoT system design and implementation. This conference invites original, previously unpublished work on a range of IoT topics, broadly defined. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: . Analytic foundations and theory of IoT . Among the others, transportation systems are nowadays populated by smart and interconnected vehicles that need to communicate with each other and with critical infrastructures to orchestrate traffic and mobility. Transportation systems are hence operated through multiple technologies that need to cooperate to provide efficient delivery of goods and human mobility, as well as to provide security in the overall networks. The latter task is complicated by the fact that vehicles autonomously drive and cooperate in the network without human intervention. The overall transportation network can be therefore represented by a cyber-physical system, where a large number of sensors, actuators, and multiple technologies are connected and exchange information. To guarantee the overall network security, attack detection and the design of suitable countermeasures play a fundamental role. The security of cyber-physical systems has been widely studied in literature. However, most of the proposed solutions target either the cyber or the physical threats, without providing a unified view able to detect and mitigate more complicated attacks. The purpose of this special issue is therefore to collect the latest research achievements in the cyber-physical threats and countermeasures in autonomous transportation systems. This Special Section is focused on the most recent scientific research and insights on the evolution of communication architectures and protocols for an Internet of Space, able to boost the creation of a truly global Internet by means of the integration of the current Internet with a new Internet of Space. Such evolution is expected to have a significant impact on several markets such as IoT/Industrial IoT, Mobile services, Industry 4.0, Government enterprise, and Connected mobility. The section shall cover work focused on aspects such as how to support the operation of Tier-1, Tier-2 or even Tier-3 airborne/spaceborne networks; how to address interoperability, within and across different protocol layers in the network architecture, leveraging cross-layer design; and finally how to design a more unified next generation Internet architecture able to transparently include spaceborne and airborne platforms in a way that allows for user-centric services, and a smooth operation of transient networks. However, an original and competent Internet of Space, calls for the definition of a networking framework able to accommodate specific properties of dynamic systems, including heterogeneous physical layers, frequent changes in network topology, high propagation delays, and intermittent connectivity. The dominant success factor for such a networking framework is low-cost bandwidth, although its capability to support low latency and high-throughput services plays an important role. Secondly, a global Internet is only possible with a transparent integration of an Internet of Space with the current Internet, while supporting multi-tenants, multi-systems in different orbits and altitudes, as well as multiple markets. Such an integration requires rethinking the Internet architecture in order to extend its operation to all systems above the Earth's surface, which requires the integration of heterogeneous communication devices and protocols. Such a unifying networking framework will have a truly global reach, allowing the connection between information producers and consumers in any corner of Earth and Space. Last but not least, the seamless integration of an Internet of Space with the current Internet will lead to a global empowerment, providing information access to everyone who may need it to sustain enriched human life, while mitigating some of the major limitations of a network infrastructure that is built on Earth's surface, which is subjected not only to geographic limits but also to political limits. >From a technical perspective this Special Section is focused on the design and performance evaluation of networking architectures and protocols for the Internet of Space, as well as on a more unified design that best deals with the networking challenges to be faced. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Network architectures, able to support multi-tenants, multi-systems in different orbits and altitudes, as well as multiple markets, while being transparently integrated in the current Internet architecture. Such new, unifying, network architecture may require the exploitation of paradigms such as Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN), and Information Centric Networking (ICN). * Network virtualization, leveraging well-known technologies such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), as well as their integration with the emerging concept of Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), allowing the virtualization of networking, storage and computing fabrics at the edge, required for the offloading of tasks that have latency constraints from the core to the edge. * Decentralized Internet Infrastructure, allowing a scalable Internetworking between computing processes and service hosted at the network edge (including flying platforms and spaceborne platforms, such as smart satellite constellations), leading to an end-to-end latency reduction due to user proximity, as well as a reduction of network traffic through traffic localization and device-to-device communications. * Network management, such as support for the global orchestration of network functions on board spaceborne platforms (e.g., satellites) to best support data processing and aggregation; seamless interoperation of mobile Edge infrastructure and devices; resilience and seamless adaptation based on the capability to anticipate the behavior of services on a global scale. * Cognitive networking, in which programmable spaceborne networks allow networked devices to perform customized computation, including the usage of Artificial Intelligence. Such cognitive functions will be exploited to develop more intelligent, adaptive networks, able to perceive network conditions, decide upon those conditions, and learn from the consequences of its actions. * Networking protocols, including support for inter-satellite communications, and satellite to ground communications, Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE), integrated security, and mobility, and their integration with existing protocols such as IP routing (e.g. segment routing), transport protocols from the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), and application protocols such as Domain Name Service (DNS). * Wireless technologies, including not only the usage of radio frequency systems but also free space optical systems, and a combination of both. * Network measurement & performance, to assist in understanding and exposing the performance of spaceborne networking resources, infrastructure, and available communication protocols in a variety of ground-to-space, inter-satellite communication scenarios. * Privacy, security and trustworthiness, assuming end-to-end scenarios involving satellites with computational and storage capabilities, and covering aspects such as data security, decentralized trust architectures. * Impact on Internet services, such as advanced IoT services (e.g., Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality in manufacturing or farming) served by spaceborne platforms and spaceborne communications; real-time IoT applications (e.g., critical monitoring of public infrastructures); awareness services (e.g., public safety services). * Impact on data management aspects, including the support of the next generation of Edge computing in space, as well as a fast cooperation between a large set of Edge-based producers of data. However, the assistance of UAVs to such systems and applications always raises a lot of exciting new challenges in terms of energy consumption, positioning and trajectory optimization, communications, and security, just to name a few. From the B5G point of view, the current UAV assistance paradigms should also be revised to explicitly consider different features, such as computing, network management, intelligent decisions, and energy efficiency. The potential of the UAV assistance paradigm paves a path towards many advantages, including flexibility of deployment, reduced risk of dangerous environments, agility in missions, and efficiency in communications. However, various open challenges are still to be tackled to ensure its correct deployment. Not all research leads to fruitful results, trying new ways or methods may surpass the state of the art, but sometimes the hypothesis is not proven or the improvement is insignificant. But failure to succeed is not failure to progress and this workshop aims to create a platform for sharing insights, experiences, and lessons learned when conducting research in the area of pervasive computing. While the direct outcome of negative results might not contribute much to the field, the wisdom of hindsight could be a contribution itself, such that other researchers could avoid falling into similar pitfalls. We consider negative results to be studies that are run correctly (in the light of the current state of the art) and in good practice, but fail in terms of proving of the hypothesis or come up with no significance. The “badness” of the work can also come out as a properly but unfittingly designed data collection, or (non-trivial) lapses of hindsight especially in measurement studies. IEEE VNC 2021 - Call for Posters and Demos 13th IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) November 10-12, 2021 Hybrid event (Ulm, Germany and online) https://ieee-vnc.org/2021/ Now in its 13th year, VNC has been the primary venue for people interested in vehicular communication to meet. Last year, VNC 2020 featured a very different format. While some attendees called it the best online-conference they attended in 2020, not meeting in person is only the second best option. In 2021, the organizing team is therefore committed to bring back the opportunity to meet in-person again. As the development of the pandemic over the next months and thus the possibilities to travel to and meet in a conference venue in November are hard to predict, we made the decision to plan VNC 2021 in a hybrid format where we aim for an equally good conference experience for both presenters and attendees no matter if you attend on-site or remotely. You will be able to register for the online conference and book an add-on package for on-site participation even on relatively short notice, leaving you all options open as long as possible. These "challenge papers" should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and/or influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Experience PapersThe conference invites submission of short papers (limited to eight pages excluding references) that present extensive experiences with implementation, deployment, and operations of mobile systems and wireless networks. Desirable papers are expected to contain real data as well as descriptions of the practical lessons learned. The experience papers will be evaluated by the program committee, primarily for (i) richness of their data or experiences, (ii) inferences drawn or lessons learned, (iii) discovery of new problems, and (iv) their impact/potential impact on current and future mobile systems and wireless networks, as well as on society. Note that a paper that builds a system and presents a limited experimental evaluation is NOT suitable as an experience paper. Selected experience papers will become a part of the conference technical program and will be published in the conference proceedings. Experience papers should be submitted according to the same submission procedure as full papers, and their title must bear an "Experience:" prefix. Verification PapersThe conference invites submission of short papers (limited to eight pages excluding references) that seek to verify recent breakthrough results in mobile computing using rigorous experimental methodologies with the goal of extensively and thoroughly characterizing the operating parameters under which these results can be reproduced. Selected verification papers will become a part of the conference technical program and will be published in the conference proceedings. Verification papers should be submitted according to the same submission procedure as full papers, and their title must bear a "Verification:" as a prefix. Two Deadlines and One-shot Revision MobiCom 2022 offers authors the options of two deadlines and keeps the one-shot revision process to enhance the timeliness and quality of the scientific results from the research community. Each paper will go through the same rigorous reviewing process as in previous MobiCom conferences. The review decisions will be one of the following: - Accept: Accepted papers will be presented at the MobiCom conference and appear as part of the proceedings and the MobiCom website. Note all the papers in this category will initially be *conditionally accepted*. The papers that go through a successful anonymous shepherding process will eventually be accepted. - Reject: Rejected after reviewed papers cannot be resubmitted until 11 months have passed since the last MobiCom deadline they were submitted to. We strongly encourage the authors to address the feedback they got before re-submitting the paper to MobiCom. - One-Shot-Revision: Papers, where a revision is required, will be given specific action points and can be resubmitted for the next deadline. For such papers, the reviewers will articulate a maximum of three major changes/clarifications that they would like to see. After the resubmission, the paper will be evaluated based on whether the authors have properly addressed the reviewers’ requests. Unlike in the shepherding process, the requested action points may include running additional experiments that obtain specific results and could take more than 4-6 weeks. During this revision period, the paper is still considered under review to MobiCom and therefore cannot be submitted to other conferences unless the authors first withdraw it from consideration. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. All submitted papers will be evaluated through a double-blind reviewing process, with the identities of the authors withheld from the reviewers. Before final submission, you are expected to make sure that your paper complies with the following requirements. Please do not violate these requirements with the aim of including additional material: submissions that violate the formatting requirements may not be reviewed. If you have posted or plan to post a non-anonymized version of your paper on a preprint server before the MobiCom decisions are made, the submitted version must not refer to the non-anonymized version. MobiCom strongly discourages advertising the preprint on social media, personal web pages or in the press while under submission to MobiCom. Finally, any reviewer aware of the authorship of a specific submission, may not be allowed to review the paper, at the discretion of the PC chairs. We will not review any paper that violates our double-blind policy. Submissions will be kept confidential until accepted. Rejected submissions will be kept confidential permanently. Conflict of Interest (CoI)For a fair review process, program committee members who are COIs to any author of the submission will not review or participate in the discussion and decision-making of the submission. It is the author’s responsibility to mark COIs in the submission website. We generally follow the ACM policy (Conflict of Interest Policy for ACM Publications <https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/conflict-of-interest>) and also add and extend rules on the specific relationships to explicitly define COIs of one submission at MobiCom ’22 as: (1) any PC member who works/worked at the same organizational affiliation with any co-author in the last 24 months or reasonably expected within the next 12 months; (2) any PC member who has co-authored any book, article, report, abstract or paper with collaboration in the last 24 months or reasonably expected within the next 12 months; (3) any PC member who has collaborated on projects, such as funded grants, research or others with any co-author in the last 24 months or reasonably expected within the next 12 months; (4) any PC member who is/was the advisor or advisee of any co-author; (5) any PC member who graduated from the same research group and/or was under the same advisor/supervisor/manager in the last 48 months; (6) any PC member who is exposed to the full or partial authorship of the work being submitted here in any public or private channel (including but not limited to interview talks, campus visits, research discussion, conversations); (7) any PC member who has a close personal friendship or business relationship beyond professional settings that could affect the review process with any co-author; (8) others perceivable conflicts. A potential COI must be identified at the submission and can be updated at any point during the review process, but when possible, potential conflicts should be determined before acceptance decisions are made. The author(s) must identify every COI out of all PC members (including chairs) with any author of the submission and indicate the type of conflict during the submission process. For other forms of conflicts (item 8), the authors must contact the program chairs and explain the perceived conflict. Knowingly hiding or falsifying a stated COI, and knowingly and falsely asserting a COI — e.g., to prevent or alter peer-reviewing, to discourage appropriate reviewing, or to seek disadvantage of another — are both considered as a violation of this COI policy. Previous SubmissionsIn case of any similarity between a current submission and a submission that has been previously rejected at MobiCom or other relevant conferences within the last 24 months, the authors are requested to do the following in three cases: 1. Along with the resubmission, the authors must report the major concerns and requested items from the reviewers of the previous submission and write a summary of how the authors have addressed them in the revision. Please ensure your anonymity is retained in this summary. 2. For submissions that have been recently rejected by MobiCom, it is required for the authors to do the same as in case 1. That is, please report the major concerns from the reviewers of the previous submission and write a summary of how the authors have addressed them in the current submission. For submissions that have been previously rejected by a conference other than MobiCom (such as Mobisys, SIGCOMM, NSDI, SenSys, UbiComp, etc.), it is strongly encouraged, although not required, for the authors to do the same items as in case 2. That is, please report the major concerns from the reviewers of the previous submission and write a summary of how the authors have addressed them in the current submission. Please ensure your anonymity is retained in this summary. Processes for Conditionally Accepted Papers Anonymous and Rigorous Shepherding Conditionally accepted papers will be shepherded through a review process by a TPC member. Based on the feedback written in the reviews, authors of shepherded papers will submit a revision of their paper to the shepherd. The shepherd will collaborate with the reviewers from TPC to review the revised paper and provide the authors with additional comments. Note that the shepherding process could last 4-6 weeks and the authors might be asked to produce new experimental results and/or add new material. When the shepherding process results in final acceptance, the authors will upload their camera-ready file to the submissions system. Video Presentation The authors of each accepted paper will be asked to submit a one-minute video to introduce the research presented in their paper to the general public. These videos will be placed on the conference website and conference YouTube channel up to two weeks before the conference. A selected set will be featured by the social media channels related to the conference. Registration and Presentation By submitting a paper, you agree that at least one of the authors will register and attend the conference to present it. To ensure reliable network operation, new design and management techniques must be constantly devised to respond to the rapid network and service evolution. As a recent and relevant example, deployments of 5G communication networks will soon enter their second phase, during which the network infrastructure will require upgrades to support new Ultra-Reliable services with availability of up to 6 nines. Similarly, disaster resiliency in communication networks is now attracting the attention of media, governments and industry as never before (consider, e.g., the worldwide network traffic deluge to support remote working during the current Covid19-pandemic!). Luckily, several new technical directions can be leveraged to provide new solutions for network reliability such as for example: increased network reconfigurability enabled by Software Defined Networking (SDN); integration/convergence of multiple technologies (optical, wireless, satellite, datacenter networks); enhanced forms of data/service replication, supported by, e.g., edge computing; network slicing, used to carve highly-reliable logical partitions of network, computing and storage resources. These, and many other technological transformations can enable next-generation high-reliability networks. Given the strong interest in both industry and academia towards reliability of telecom networks and cloud-computing infrastructures, we organize this IEEE TNSM Special Issue as a second Special Issue as part of a Series on Design and Management of Reliable Networks. in IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, with the first issue published in September 2021. The Special Issue aims at the timely publication of recent and innovative research results on this important topic. This Special Issue is organized in collaboration with the International Conference on the Design of Reliable Communication Networks (DRCN), which was held in April this year. DRCN is a well-established forum for scientists from both industry and academy who have interest in reliability and availability of communication networks. As such, this Special Issue will also invite top-scored DRCN papers to share excellent results and new challenges in the field of reliable communication networks and services. We welcome submissions addressing important challenges (see the non-exhaustive list of topics below) and presenting novel research or experimentation results. However, today’s sensing-cloud paradigm does not genetically support trust management and privacy preservation; it also does not encourage information sharing in multi-stakeholder settings through incentives and payment mechanisms. The emerging blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies offer a possibility to 1) ensure data protection, 2) monetize information exchange, 3) reduce sharing and maintenance costs, and 4) to manage trust in multi-stakeholder settings. We solicit high quality position papers and research papers that address opportunities and challenges at the intersection of networked sensing/IoT, smart cities, and blockchain. We aim to set up a stage for industry and academia to share wins and lessons combining both disciplines. We welcome contributions to all relevant research on application, system, network and security. ENSsys@SenSys will be a highly interactive workshop. First, we invite ''mini-tutorials'' and demos from established energy harvesting systems - we aim to open ENSsys with a showcase of existing work to set a baseline of what is possible today and spark ideas for what can be built in the future. Demos previously presented in other venues are explicitly welcome. For new work, we invite short pitches on technical issues in energy harvesting systems that remain underserved or more radical positions that invite rethinking of current system design. We will use these pitches to organise several smaller, highly interactive workgroups. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Power management concepts, algorithms and circuits for energy-harvesting sensing systems - Hardware and software concepts, algorithms and circuits for intermittent computing - Middleware and services supporting interoperability between zero-energy networks - Resource management and operating system support for energy-harvesting sensing systems - Network-wide distributed energy management (e.g. routing, adaptive duty cycling, etc.) - Communication in intermittent-power domain - Online measurement of energy intake and consumption - Predicting energy intake and consumption - Ensuring reliable operation in energy-harvesting sensor systems - Modelling, simulation and tools for effective design of future energy harvesting sensing systems - Architectures and standards for energy-neutral, power-neutral or intermittent sensing systems - Internet of (battery-less) things - Experience with real-world deployments and innovative applications We are soliciting two types of short abstract submissions: Technical concept pitches (target 2 pages, hard limit 3 pages including references), which will receive feedback and guidance from the TPC; Position pitches (target 2 pages, hard limit 3 pages including references). Pitches that continue on to be full submissions for ENSsys@APSLOS in 2022 will receive special consideration and the same set of reviewers (where possible). ENSsys will also feature an ''Energy Harvesting Village.'' This is an opportunity to showcase prior, established work to a new audience, as well as to provide mini-lessons on key concepts in energy harvesting design or introductions to platforms and tooling that aim to facilitate and support energy harvesting systems. The poster/demo session has been a successful regular event at ICNP in past years. These sessions will provide a great chance for students and researchers to obtain feedback on their on-going research from knowledgeable conference attendees. Extended abstracts (2 pages) of the posters or extended description (2 pages) of the demos should be submitted in the Portable Document Format (PDF) only, following the same formatting instructions as for the main conference papers, except that the author names should be included in the 2-page PDF, and their title must bear a "Poster:" or "Demo:" prefix, respectively. The submissions will be reviewed by members of the Poster/Demo Session committee. The abstracts of accepted posters and demos will be included in the proceedings and in IEEE eXplore. We will do our best to accommodate demo author needs to present and discuss the demo virtually. ## Scope IEEE LCN 2021 will feature a demo session with the aim of providing demonstrations that validate important research issues and/or show innovative prototypes. A submission is limited to 8 pages for main conference regular papers or 4 pages for poster papers in the IEEE Computer Society Proceedings Format with Portable Document Format (.pdf).
