No single technology or architecture will be able to smoothly glue together such complex systems into a single network of all networks. DSL and Cable once dominating the access networks will be challenged by new cheap alternatives such as Optical Ethernet, Wireless LANs, Fixed Wireless Access systems such as LMDS, and even dark fiber. Metro networks will also be dominated by an array of technologies from Multiple Service Protocol Platforms (MSPP) to resilient packet rings (RPR) to 10 GB-Ethernet switches, and even OXC switching nodes. The backbone will be superhighways utilizing DWDM, OXC nodes interconnecting Gigabit and Terabit IP routers. 3G and beyond mobile networks will be a corner stone in extending communications services to mobile users.New Services and applications will be supported on these complex systems through upper layer middleware software platforms. These services will no longer be independent static sources of content, rather will have intelligent software to adapt those sources to varying networks conditions, technologies, and platforms. This will be achieved through another intelligent layer of cognitive middleware that is capable of interfacing these services to the underlying network technologies. New services must be capable of receiving information about the network and adaptively tune their transport parameters as well as bit-rates according to the underlying networking conditions/technologies. New Services and contents will need to understand networking traffic parameters, and react accordingly in order to maintain smooth traffic flows in the network and avoid skewness behaviors. The scope of this special issue is to address the research and development efforts of the aforementioned various issues in the area of intelligent services and applications in next generation networks. In particular we are interested in papers dealing with state-of-the-art design and analysis, implementation and experimental results of cognitive and intelligent software agents/services and applications as well as novel architectures for intelligent content delivery. The reasons for this increased interest are many. Broadband connectivity to home users is now available via technologies such as Cable modems and DSL. Commercial organizations like Akamai have deployed global content distribution networks that allow streaming of content from edge servers, alleviating many of the drawbacks of streaming data over best-effort networks. Despite hurdles in the deployment of IP multicast, application-level multicast of content permits scalable delivery of high bandwidth content to a large number of users. These exciting technological advances have raised a number of interesting researchquestions. How can edge servers (proxies) be employed for scaling the delivery of popular streaming content to very large numbers of users? Information processing in sensor networks draws upon many disciplines including signal processing/detection/estimation, networking and protocols, embedded systems, data bases and information management, as well as distributed algorithms. It opens up new research venues, which include sensor tasking and control, tracking and localization, probabilistic reasoning, sensor data fusion, distributed data bases, communication protocols and theory that address network coverage, connectivity, and capacity, as well as system/software architecture and design methodologies. Moreover, all these issues have to consider many cross-cutting requirements such as efficiency/cost tradeoff, robustness, self-organization, fault-tolerance, timeliness, scalability, and network longevity. This Symposium will address issues from physical device design, to signal processing and from networking to coordination protocols. The Symposium will place special attention to revolutionary new applications that are enabled by sensor network technology. With pervasive computing technology embodied into real world objects like furniture, clothing, crafts, rooms, etc., those artefacts also become the interface to "invisible" services and allow to mediate between the physical and digital (or virtual) world via natural interaction - away from desktop displays and keyboards. Novel interface concepts for situated interaction give rise for bringing the interaction with computers "back to the real world". All these observations pose serious challenges to the conceptual architectures of computing, and the related engineering disciplines in computer science. Just like regular papers, tech-notes should present directing research, but in very focused and compact format. Tech-notes are not understood as short papers condensed into less page space, but are intended to present pointed results at a high level of technicality. Submissions in this category will be handled electronically and must be in PDF or PostScript file format. Regular papers must not exceed 18 pages (or approx. 10000 words, including text, figures and references), tech-notes must not exceed 5 pages (or approx. 2500 words) formatted single column, single-spaced in Springer LNCS style available at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. Accepted regular papers and tech-notes will be published in the conference proceedings. PERVASIVE 2004 will adopt a double-blind process for regular paper and tech-note review, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers and vice versa. This will be a 2.5-day conference, featuring refereed paper presentations, tutorials, demos, videos, and poster sessions. This conference builds on the success of the first MobiSys conference held in San Francisco, http://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2003/, which featured 23 high caliber research papers and many interesting posters and demonstrations. The conference particularly values the practical experience gained from designing, building and using mobile systems, applications, and services. TOPICS The conference addresses broad systems issues in mobile computing. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: * Design, implementation, and evaluation of mobile systems * Middleware and service architectures for mobile applications * Data management for mobile applications * Disconnected and weakly connected operation * Proxies and data adaptation * Mobile agents * Operating systems for small devices * Infrastructure support for mobility * Security, privacy, authorization, and billing * System-level energy management for mobile devices * Wearable and handheld devices in the context of system design * Personal mobility * Personal-area networks and systems * Resource discovery of mobile services * Systems for location awareness and determination * Application interfaces and services supporting the mobile user * Systems support for mobile robots * Experience with mobile systems The ideal MobiSys submission should present novel research that has resulted in the implementation or evaluation of running systems. Papers that describe the design of and experience with mobile system architectures are favored over those narrowly focused on low-level components such as the device hardware or the routing, link, or physical network layers. Please feel free to contact the Program Chairs at mobisys_pcchairs(a)acm.org to determine appropriateness. An award will be given at the conference for the best paper. WHAT TO SUBMIT Submissions should be full papers, 1214 single-spaced 8.5" × 11" pages, including figures, tables, and references, two-column format, using 10-point type on 12-point (single-spaced) leading. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and correctness. Accepted papers may be shepherded through an editorial review process by a member of the program committee. MobiSys, like most conferences and journals, requires that papers must not be submitted simultaneously to any other conference or publication, that submissions must not be previously published, and that accepted papers must not be subsequently published elsewhere. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions will be held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976. Technological development has brought about a rapid maturity in smart appliances and devices, over the last few years, adding to the potential for the emergence of a variety of systems, personal computers and applications. Further enabling software and hardware for building and supporting such applications is still required. These include new kinds of embedded devices, networks, infrastructure, software architectures and models. Collaborative sharing and distribution of information and functionality between participating appliances, heightens the utility of such new technologies as the user works with applications, devices and environments seamlessly. This workshop provides a forum for the exchange of findings into seamlessly collaborating appliances, environments and devices. In addition, it provides an opportunity for further exploration of selected topics and for the presentation of the most recent research and development findings in these rapidly changing fields. TOPICS Technical papers on such smart appliances and devices are solicited for oral presentation at IWSAWC 2004. It opens up new research venues, which include sensor tasking and control, tracking and localization, probabilistic reasoning, sensor data fusion, distributed data bases, communication protocols and theory that address network coverage, connectivity, and capacity, as well as system/software architecture and design methodologies. Moreover, all these issues have to consider many cross-cutting requirements such as efficiency/cost tradeoff, robustness, self-organization, fault-tolerance, timeliness, scalability, and network longevity. This Symposium will address issues from physical device design, to signal processing and from networking to coordination protocols. The Symposium will place special attention to revolutionary new applications that are enabled by sensor network technology. For example, point-to-point and point-to-multipoint modes of communication must be supported in a multihop network that typically consists of small (often disadvantaged) users that are characterized by severely limited energy supply, signal-processing capability, antenna directivity, bandwidth, etc. Crucial applications for mobile ad hoc networks include military communications and disaster relief, although commercial applications are certainly possible as well. In applications with a large number of nodes, scalability is a major concern. The study of ad hoc networks is an interdisciplinary one, which can potentially incorporate communication and information theory, distributed networking algorithms, data structures and compression, coding, signal processing, detection, antenna characteristics, optimization methods, simulation, testbed implementations etc. Papers submitted for this special issue must directly address ad hoc networking issues. We outline here only a few of the many aspects of ad hoc network design and control that will be addressed in this special issue. First, distributed network organization algorithms (such as those for clustering) may be used to create the equivalent of an ad hoc infrastructure. Distributed algorithms are also needed for routing, channel access, and other control functions. Networking techniques for ad hoc networks must address the challenges imposed by the all-wireless environment. For example, by contrast with wired networks, the conventional layered protocol stack is not well suited to the ad hoc wireless networking environment because it does not exploit the potential improvements in performance that can be obtained by jointly designing protocols that span multiple layers. Specifically, it is expected that improved performance can be obtained by considering the properties of the physical and data link layers when designing and operating the media-access control (MAC) protocol. Similarly, there are potential benefits to be obtained by developing protocols that address jointly the routing and MAC functions. Additional benefits can be obtained by jointly addressing higher-layer functions along with routing and MAC. Energy-aware protocols (from the perspective of either energy-efficient or energy-constrained operation) are of critical importance in many ad hoc scenarios. Such energy-aware operation can span multiple layers, e.g., by addressing trade-offs between energy used for RF transmission and for signal processing. It is the goal of this special issue to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks by examining all aspects of ad hoc network design and control, including the dependencies between various network functions and the potential benefits that can be gained by cross-layer design. We are interested in papers on fundamental performance limits, but more importantly on algorithm design and performance, system implementations, etc. We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. The guest editors for this special issue are David Simplot-Ryl, University of Lille, France, and Ivan Stojmenovic, University of Ottawa, Canada. Purpose Wireless networks and mobile computing research has until recently concentrated on single-hop networks (network nodes communicating directly to a fixed infrastructure), such as cellular and satellite systems. Ad hoc networking covers multi-hop scenarios (network nodes communicating via other network nodes) such as conference, hospital, battlefield, rescue, and monitoring scenarios. Particular ad hoc network systems include packet radio networks, sensor networks, personal communication systems, rooftop networks, and wireless local area networks. Even multi-hop cellular networks may be a viable option when a huge number of cellular phones are concentrated on a small area such as stadium. This special issue will cover comprehensively the network layer in ad hoc networks, which deals with data communication and topology control problems. Data communication problems include routing, broadcasting, multicasting, geocasting, clustering, area monitoring, data and service access. Topology control problems include neighbor discovery, topology construction and maintenance, activity scheduling, position discovery, partition detection, location updates, and network management. The new approaches to ad hoc networks design emphasize cross-layering approach, and therefore the relevant issues arising from network layer problems will also be covered, such as power management, security, quality of service, performance evaluation, data link and transport layers. The goal of the special issue is to publish original research and review articles which should be comprehensive to all readers, regardless of their specialty. With pervasive computing technology embodied into real world objects like furniture, clothing, crafts, rooms, etc., those artefacts also become the interface to "invisible" services and allow to mediate between the physical and digital (or virtual) world via natural interaction - away from desktop displays and keyboards. Novel interface concepts for situated interaction give rise for bringing the interaction with computers "back to the real world". All these observations pose serious challenges to the conceptual architectures of computing, and the related engineering disciplines in computer science. PERVASIVE 2004, the Second International Conference on Pervasive Computing, provides a premier venue to bring together researchers and practitioners working in all foundational and applied research areas of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing Special Issue on Mobile Commerce MOTIVATION AND SCOPE With the emergence and wide spread adoption of wireless and mobile networks, devices, and middleware, mobile commerce applications are beginning to receive some interest in research and development community. According to estimates by Gartner Group, in 2004, at least 40% of consumer-to-business e-commerce will be initiated from smart phones. A study from the Wireless Data and Computing Service, a division of Strategy Analytics, reports that the worldwide mobile commerce market may rise to $200 Billion by 2004. The report predicts that transactions via wireless devices will generate about $14 Billion a year. In many European countries and Japan with significant wireless penetration, the mobile commerce market is already taking off and reaching billions of dollars a year. It is to be noted that mobile commerce may require significantly different approaches in design, development, and implementation of applications due to the inherent characteristics of wireless networks and mobile devices. Many interesting and important challenges include design of mobile commerce applications, networking requirements and support, transactions and security, database and software architectures, design and performance evaluation of m-commerce systems. Mobile commerce will also significantly benefit from research in mobile devices, mobile middleware, and wireless network infrastructure. The special issue will bring together computing and networking issues, architectures, solutions, and performance evaluation for mobile commerce. The special issue will cover several systems and computing issues in m-commerce including the followings: . Design and development of wireless networks for m-commerce . Design and development of m-commerce applications . Interoperability, processing and storage requirements . Computing and distributed architectures for m-commerce . Integrated wireless access for m-commerce . Location management support . Multicast support for m-commerce . Design of algorithms and systems . User and location specific service discovery . Devices, middleware, and operating systems support for mobile commerce . Security and transactions in mobile commerce . Scalable, reliable and fault-tolerant architectures . Software and database support . Performance evaluation of architectures, systems or networks for m-commerce Papers not dealing directly with m-commerce and systems will not be considered for the special issue. As such, RTAS strives to become the first IEEE symposium to consider the broad spectrum of QoS issues spanning the range from closed embedded systems to Internet applications and distributed and wireless computing. The QoS in Open Systems track is intended to become a premiere publication venue for the QoS community, as well as for researchers who address QoS and performance management issues in contexts such as networking, peer-to-peer, distributed systems, sensor networks, mobile and ubiquitous computing, ad hoc wireless networks, and WWW applications, among others. Papers submitted to this track should address or extend the broad spectrum of performance assurance problems, QoS constraints, and quality metrics in open systems.
