Pervasive computing has found its way into many commercial systems due to tremendous advances in a broad spectrum of technologies and topics such as wireless networking, mobile and distributed computing, sensor systems, ambient intelligence, and smart devices. SCOPE PerCom 2022 solicits research contributions in all areas pertinent to pervasive computing and communications, especially those that cross traditional research boundaries. In particular, we target: Advances in pervasive systems and infrastructures: middleware systems and services; data engineering for pervasive computing; cloud, fog and edge computing; integrations of smartphones in pervasive experiences; applications of device-to-device coordination. Domain-specific challenges and novel applications: urban/mobile crowdsensing & intelligence; PerCom for healthcare and well-being; smart homes and virtual assistants; innovative PerCom applications (e.g., sports analytics, crime prevention, pervasive nowcasting). Intersections of PerCom with: opportunistic networks; IoT and sensor systems; RFID systems; pervasive data science, and cyber physical systems. New techniques for user-level concerns: participatory and social sensing; trust, security, and privacy; user interface, interaction, and persuasion; online and offline social networking and pervasive computing. Technological innovations: architectures, protocols, and technologies for pervasive communications; energy-harvesting, self-powered, or battery-less systems; mobile and wearable systems; smart devices and environments; positioning and tracking technologies; wireless crowd-recharging; device-free human sensing. Contributions can be analytical, empirical, technological, methodological, or a combination. Papers reporting strong systems engineering contributions backed by solid and appropriate evaluations are strongly encouraged. The impact of the contributions should be demonstrated in the context of pervasive computing and communications applications. Particularly relevant are results and insights substantiated by a strong experimental component on real-world devices, as well as contributions describing practical deployments and implementation experiences. The deadline has been extended to July 26. ======================================================================== PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JULY 26, 2021 ======================================================================== IEEE VNC 2021 - Call for Papers 13th IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) November 10-12, 2021 Hybrid event (Ulm, Germany and online) https://ieee-vnc.org/2021/ Now in its 13th year, VNC has been the primary venue for people interested in vehicular communication to meet. Last year, VNC 2020 featured a very different format. While some attendees called it the best online-conference they attended in 2020, not meeting in person is only the second best option. In 2021, the organizing team is therefore committed to bring back the opportunity to meet in-person again. As the development of the pandemic over the next months and thus the possibilities to travel to and meet in a conference venue in November are hard to predict, we made the decision to plan VNC 2021 in a hybrid format where we aim for an equally good conference experience for both presenters and attendees no matter if you attend on-site or remotely. You will be able to register for the online conference and book an add-on package for on-site participation even on relatively short notice, leaving you all options open as long as possible. We therefore encourage authors to submit their papers to VNC 2021 and enjoy the best of both worlds: on-site presentations and meetings with the VNC community if possible; or an excellent online experience if travel cannot be arranged. VNC 2021 is seeking for full and short papers, poster and demo papers about the following topics. Connectivity - 5G and beyond-5G technologies for connected vehicles - Emerging V2X communication technologies, including dynamic spectrum sharing, mmWave, massive MIMO, beamforming, and vehicular visible light communications - Networking, transport and QoS management for vehicular networks - In-vehicle communication and networking systems - Radio for vehicular networks (e.g., channel measurements, propagation models, antenna design) Architecture and System Design - Heterogeneous vehicular networking (e.g., multi-radio, multi-channel, multi-application, multi-technology, multi-operator) and coexistence of access technologies - Architectures and system designs for connected automated driving - Cloud and edge computing for vehicular applications - Security, privacy, liability, and dependability of vehicular networks - Integration of V2C communications with on-board systems and networks Tools & Methods - Hardware and software platforms for simulation, emulation, prototyping, measurement, and/or real-world deployment of vehicular networks and applications - Field measurements and/or real-world deployments of vehicular networks and applications - Optimization techniques (e.g., linear programming, machine learning) with unique benefits for vehicular applications - Modeling, design, and analysis of vehicular networks and applications Applications - Cooperative perception and cooperative driving - Innovative vehicular network applications and their communication requirements - Vulnerable road user protection - Vehicular networks and IoT integration - Impact assessments of vehicular networks on transportation (e.g., safety, efficiency, comfort, privacy, and environmental sustainability) All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. The Best Paper Award, selected by a committee, will be given to the paper with the highest impact. Papers exceeding 8 pages will be declined automatically and will not be reviewed. Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work-in-progress without fully finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussions about innovative directions and new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference. Posters are especially suited for presenting controversial research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully validated through complete extensive evaluation. They are limited to at most two (2) pages and their title must begin with "Poster:". Demonstration (demo) papers are suited for researchers to showcase their latest prototypes with media, models, or live demonstrations. They are limited to at most two (2) pages and their title must begin with "Demo:". Please note that these categories (in particular: full paper and short paper) target different kinds of contributions. Papers submitted to one category will NOT be moved to a different category: a paper will either be accepted in the category where it has been submitted, or it will be rejected (in particular: full papers will not be "downgraded" to short papers). Therefore, please be sure to carefully assess for yourself prior to submission which is the most suitable submission category for your paper, and to make sure that the presentation in the manuscript is well suited to the aims of this category. The highly efficient exploitation of the spectral resources has motivated the evolution of the legacy static frequency allocation and management policies introduced in the early twentieth century towards more flexible and dynamic spectrum exploitation approaches in recent years. Gone are the days of the spectrum regulators’ scepticism on dynamic spectrum sharing ideas, which has now been replaced with a supportive regulatory environment for flexible spectrum technologies. This significant change of paradigm in spectrum regulation and management has allowed the development of new technologies for flexible spectrum sharing and coexistence, both in licensed bands (e.g., WRANs in TV white spaces, LSA/ASA, CBRS) and unlicensed bands (e.g., LTE-U/LTE-LAA, 5G NR-U), and is also expected to facilitate and accelerate access to the radio frequency spectrum for a broad range of new applications and services in next generation wireless networks, including smart cities, smart grids, connected autonomous vehicles and drones in intelligent transportation systems as well as commercial and industrial IoT networks. The concept of flexible spectrum usage has historically been developed in the context of the crowded lower frequency bands. However, over time there will be use of much higher frequency bands that are not currently used for communications. There is an opportunity to embed spectrum-sharing technologies in much higher frequencies (e.g., millimetre wave bands) as the technology opens up the possibility of using those. This will be necessary to enable an opportunistic use of mmWave bands currently in use by certain technologies such as radar and satellite systems as well as an efficient coexistence in new unlicensed spectrum in the 6 GHz, 60 GHz and above 95 GHz bands. This trend is backed up by the recent release of experimental licenses on a shared, uncoordinated basis to support research, innovation and the development and use of new products and applications in Extremely High Frequency (EHF) bands. While flexible spectrum technologies offer the potential for increased spectrum efficiency and paves the way for futuristic application scenarios, interference protection in a dynamic spectrum management context remains the key challenge, in particular in next generation scenarios that require high capacity (e.g., holography and virtual reality), high density (e.g., closely spaced devices in factories and offices) and high precision (e.g., robotic assembly and warehouse stocktaking). The purpose of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions that describe original work addressing the challenges faced by flexible spectrum technologies in next generation wireless communication scenarios. This special issue aims to solicit recent research advances in modelling, analysis, performance evaluation, simulations and experimental studies on smart, flexible and versatile technologies that provide promising research directions to improve the efficiency of spectrum utilisation. Last year, VNC 2020 featured a very different format. While some attendees called it the best online-conference they attended in 2020, not meeting in person is only the second best option. In 2021, the organizing team is therefore committed to bring back the opportunity to meet in-person again. As the development of the pandemic over the next months and thus the possibilities to travel to and meet in a conference venue in November are hard to predict, we made the decision to plan VNC 2021 in a hybrid format where we aim for an equally good conference experience for both presenters and attendees no matter if you attend on-site or remotely. You will be able to register for the online conference and book an add-on package for on-site participation even on relatively short notice, leaving you all options open as long as possible. The conference dates remain the same. Presentations of demos will be organized in a way that is convenient for the various time zones. Consider a virtual demo as an opportunity to showcase your work in a way that was not possible in physical meetings or would have required to travel with a lot of gear. We will do our best to accommodate demo author needs to present and discuss the demo virtually. ## Scope IEEE LCN 2021 will feature a demo session with the aim of providing demonstrations that validate important research issues and/or show innovative prototypes. Authors are invited to submit technical demonstrations (no more than 3 pages) showing innovative and original research. The authors are encouraged to highlight the research component of the demo and explicitly mention the novelty of the showcased technology/ solution. The proposal should include one page that describes what conference participants will be able to see or experience during the demonstration. IEEE LCN is looking for demonstrations in all topics covered by the main conference and/or the symposium held in conjunction with LCN 2021. Research prototypes as well as commercial products are welcome. ## Demo Submission Proposals (no more than 3 pages) must be submitted via EDAS to the LCN Demo Track: https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c(077&track7632 Demonstrations will be selected based on their merits and expected interest from the LCN audience. All demo proposals will be reviewed by the members of the Demo Board via an EDAS score sheet. The scores will be provided to the authors along with the notification. ## Virtual Demo Presentation Demo presentations will be organised as parallel dedicated virtual rooms for each demo similar to a face-to-face demo session. Demo presenters will have the opportunity to perform live demos while also answering questions from the audience. Suggested paper topics include, but are not restricted to: * critical evaluations of new programming language ideas in support of OS construction * domain-specific languages for operating systems * type-safe languages for operating systems * the design of language-specific unikernels * language-based approaches to crosscutting system concerns, such as security and run-time performance * language support for system verification, testing, and debugging * synthesis of OS code * static/dynamic configuration of operating systems * static/dynamic specialization within operating systems * the use of OS abstractions and techniques in language runtimes * experience reports on applying new language techniques in commercial OS settings AGENDA The workshop will be a highly interactive event with an agenda designed to promote focused and lively discussions. Part of the workshop program will be based on paper presentations. PLOS welcomes research, experience, and position papers; papers describing industrial experience are particularly encouraged. The set of accepted papers will be made available to registered attendees in advance of the workshop. Participants should come to the workshop prepared with questions and comments. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All papers must be written in English and should be formatted in the two-column ACM article style (<http://www.sigplan.org/Resources/Author/>, using the options sigplan,10pt). In the 6G era, with the hyper-connectivity among humans and everything, we are anticipating Internet of Things (IoT) applications in various fields, including smart city, smart factory, smart home, smart grid, e-health, and smart transportation, accompanied by new services with rich experiences, such as truly immersive VR/AR/MR (XR), high-fidelity mobile hologram, and digital twins. However, in order to facilitate these emerging IoT applications, we have to discuss the following issues. First, due to the heterogeneity of networking entities, various application requirements, and limited resources in IoT environments, greener and more advanced networking, caching, and computing technologies are required. Future IoT systems feature a larger number of devices and multi-access environments where different types of wireless spectrum, including Sub-6 GHz, Millimeter-wave, and Terahertz technologies, should be efficiently utilized. At the same time, a resource-efficient task processing architecture should be designed in order to deal with the limited storage and computational capability of mobile devices. All these requirements motivate us to investigate the collaboration among different network entities to achieve joint optimization under heterogeneous communication, caching, and computing resources. As an example, it is crucial to determine the type and amount of data to be shared, stored, and processed among the network entities with heterogeneous characteristics. Second, the network environment and system requirements change with the space and time domains, which require intelligent approaches in perception, networking, and control. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) based approaches have been attracting great interest in empowering computer systems. Since the centralized learning approaches face some challenges in terms of scalability, some collaborative learning approaches, such as federated learning and multi-agent systems, have been discussed recently to reduce networking overhead and improve learning efficiency. Based on refined AI technologies, collaborative intelligence can achieve better decisions by aggregating knowledge and enabling efficient coordination among multiple agents with a light communication overhead. It is envisioned that the collaborative intelligence is the enabler for collaborative IoT systems. For instance, it enables: a) collaborative communications over different types of wireless spectrum among multiple transmitters for improving the spectrum utilization efficiency; b) collaborative caching among multiple network entities for reducing service latency; and c) collaborative computing with a resource-efficient end-edge-cloud task processing framework for satisfying diverse requirements on the tremendous amount of real-time data processing, including extremely large throughput, and ultra-low latency. In order to enable a greener and smarter society, more research efforts should be conducted on collaborative intelligence for IoT systems to expedite the applications of emerging IoT technologies. An efficient use of cross-domain big data should be discussed, and academic-industrial collaborations should be promoted to solve the existing problems. This special issue focuses on the technical challenges for enabling collaborative intelligence in IoT systems toward a greener and smarter society. According to Cisco Annual Internet Report, over 70 percent of the global population will have mobile connectivity by 2023 and machine to machine (M2M) connections will be half of the global connected devices and connections. This trend is coming along with increased capabilities and intelligence of devices, hence offering great opportunities for research innovation and development. Globally, 5G network deployment is rapidly moving from trials to early commercialisation and is promising to provide higher data speeds at low latency and enhanced throughput to handle more simultaneous connections without causing disruptions. However, some issues and challenges have not been fully addressed in 5G mobile networks and they are attracting further research efforts. Among these issues, we mention the emerging applications challenges that are pushing the required quality of service QoS to extreme levels, the mobile edge computing issues for user mobility support in small cells, the tendency towards Open and smart RAN enabling interoperable interfaces and RAN virtualisation that are pushing embedded machine learning systems and artificial intelligence back end modules for an enhanced RAN intelligence. Furthermore, given the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the (wireless & wired) broadband Internet and mobility become more than a desired feature but now a mandate, from home office, online education and e-business to gaming and VR/AR/360-degree video for tourists and entertainment; as well as various outdoor activities... Hence, supporting the quality of experience QoE for users and business interactions becomes more critical for Internet-based infrastructure. All these challenges drive the need towards deep research on next generation mobile Internet system that tackles these issues while delivering new mobile services and defining the fundamental architectural components for the next generation mobile Internet. MobiArch'21 workshop will focus on the technical architecture issues for next generation mobile Internet, to tackle the aforementioned challenges. Submissions must be full papers, at most 12 single-spaced 8.5” x 11” pages with 9-pt font size in two-column format, including figures and tables. As for references, submissions may include as many pages as needed. All submissions must use the LaTeX (preferred) or Word styles found here. LaTeX submissions should use the acmart.cls template (sigconf option), with the default 9-pt font. This format will be used also for the camera-ready version of accepted papers. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions. Papers that do not meet the size, formatting, and anonymization requirements will not be reviewed. We require each paper to be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and submitted through the conference submission system. These operations are performed by the Internet of Things (IoT) system of connected computing, digital, and mechanical devices, all of them named using unique identifiers (UIDs) and able to transfer data over a network without human intervention. To extract value from such massive data volumes, processing power offered by cloud computing is still utilized. However, streaming data to the cloud exposes some limitations related to the increased communication and data transfer, which introduces delays and consumes network bandwidth. Another limitation that cloud-based computing for IoT poses is limited network connectivity. Therefore, the adoption of cloud computing to process data generated by IoT devices may not be applicable at all to classes of applications such as those needed for real-time, low latency, and mobile applications. Therefore, it is beyond imagination to use cloud computing to collect data, store, and work out results. Therefore, there has been a move towards mobile communication and edge computing. Billions of devices have been connected to the Internet and created zettabytes of data items. The problem remains on how to extract information from collected data best. The use of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, neural network, and data analytic techniques in edge processing resulted in a new inter-disciplinary field that enables distributed intelligence with edge devices and is known as distributed edge AI or edge intelligence. However, research on edge AI and distributed edge AI is still relatively new, and thus models, techniques, and protocols supporting intelligent management, querying and mining of large-scale amounts of data produced at the edge are required. A lot of challenges related to providing edge intelligence include training edge devices, so they can become smarter and smarter. There is also a need of the presentation of the most recent outcome of research of distributed intelligence. This need could be illustrated by a smart city that contains for instance: garages, parkings, car washing systems, traffic unloading centrals etc. – usually belonging to different companies and running different protocols. A most likely scenario is that these devices could use different AI systems to support their activities. However, all of them are parts of one interconnected smart city; different AI systems must cooperate for common goal(s). Thus, we need distributed intelligence. Examples and different AI systems working for different edges could be multiplied; they support a variety of edges. All want to make money, kick competitors from the market out, and grab their systems. Furthermore, there is an emphasis on creating better software and algorithms that can run efficiently on resource-constrained devices. Moreover, purpose-built hardware at the edge is becoming increasingly important in the field of machine learning because companies can run software much more efficiently if they use specialized chips. Another key challenge of distributed edge AI will be the continued improvement of user interfaces that are used to communicate with other humans, including text, voice, vision, and different forms of body language. These only are some of the challenges of edge intelligence. This field is expected to arise in the upcoming years and become an essential part of the next generation of the Internet of Things that expands its reach into almost every domain. Therefore, this Special Issue seeks to identify and provide high-quality research on recent advances on edge AI and distributed edge AI.
