Time-sensitive deterministic communications are expected to provide a solid underpinning that will support modern applications connectivity in multiple and distinct use cases and operational environments. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from academia and industry in order to investigate challenging aspects in the area of time-sensitive deterministic communications, as well as identify future research directions for ultra-low latency communications. Open issues and key innovations will be discussed for both network performance and network management related aspects of deterministic communications. Cutting-edge papers spanning both theory and experimentation are solicited in all areas of networking. Papers are solicited in all areas of networking, but in keeping with the heritage of this event, this symposium’s central theme is “Ultra-broadband wireless networks: 5G and beyond”. Ultra-broadband wireless networks, that can utilize emerging communication technologies such as mmWave and THz communications, offer a tremendous opportunity for unprecedented data rates and low latency at the physical layer over short distances and network layer goodputs that are orders of magnitude greater than current wireless networks. At the same time, they raise numerous challenges – such as positioning, localization, intermittency – that impact networking, communication, and hardware design, often requiring cross-layer approaches to solve them. The intimate single-track format of the symposium encourages stimulating exchanges between researchers. The event is expected to be a forum for discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on network access protocols, network management and control, services and applications, performance related to IoT for smart cities. Speculative and potentially transformative ideas are particularly encouraged, as are studies reporting measurements from real-life networks and testbeds. Short papers will be presented in a poster session. Also, some of the regular paper submissions may be accepted as short papers by the TPC. The emerging IoT paradigm with the Big Data paradigm, provides the foundations to extract common knowledge from data made available by humans, institutions, or smart objects for supporting decision making. The paradigms of Crowdsourcing and Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) have long been used to seek contributions from a crowd of participants who commit to perform certain agreed tasks. With the omnipresence of IoT, underpinned by mobile smart devices, IoT-Crowdsensing (IoT-CS) is gaining increased interest where smart mobile devices and IoT devices undertake the task of collecting data about phenomena of interest. Although fascinating and potentially disruptive, this paradigm inherently carry a set of technical challenges at various levels, which should be studied by different research communities: battery efficiency, efficient participant recruiting, data aggregation and processing, data quality, incentivization techniques, mobility, application semantics and privacy to name some of the hot facets of IoT-CS. In line with such objectives, this workshop aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to discuss and share the current and emerging state-of-the-art, challenges and solutions in IoT-CS specifically targeting Smart Cities. Application developers have traditionally been bound to use either stream-oriented connection-based reliable communication using TCP or datagram-oriented connection-less unreliable communication using UDP, and middleboxes have been mostly configured to allow traffic from these two protocols only, and hence disincentivizing the application developers to use any novel transport protocols and services (e.g., SCTP, DCCP, etc). In recent years, this long-standing stalemate has been broken thanks to the rapid progress made on several fronts amongst them: (1) IETF’s Transport Services working group (TAPS) and several industry stakeholders’ efforts to introduce platform- and protocol-independent transport layer APIs (e.g., Apple’s Network.framework, the IETF TAPS API, and the NEAT API); (2) new transport protocols being deployed on the wire that run over UDP as a substrate (e.g., Google’s QUIC) to get around middleboxes; (3) new congestion control mechanisms other than NewReno and Linux’ CUBIC (e.g., Google’s BBR) and finally (4) HTTP3 that is an effort to port HTTP2 over QUIC. This has coincided with the introduction of new network technologies such as emerging 5G mobile networks currently being standardized by the 3GPP, and the network softwarization movement using virtualization and containerization techniques (e.g., SDN, NFV). With the emergence of networks that offer much faster PHY bitrates and aggregate capacity (e.g., 5G, WiFi6), and with emerging applications that require much more stringent latency requirements (e.g., AR/VR/XR or automotive V2X), the need for an efficient transport layer stack – that is likely to run in the userland instead of the OS kernel – will become much more significantly highlighted. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Technical issues and challenges that arise in the transport layer with the emergence of high-speed and high-capacity networks (e.g., 5G) * Transport protocols and their performance in emergent latency-sensitive and bandwidth-consuming application use-cases (e.g., V2X communication and high-fidelity AR/VR/XR) * Design, deployment, and evaluation of state-of-the-art transport protocols (e.g., QUIC) and their congestion control mechanisms (e.g., BBR) * The performance of transport protocols in virtual environments; especially novel userland transport protocols such as QUIC * Design and evaluation of new transport layer APIs for future Internet and strategies for their deployment * Design, evaluation, deployment, and measurement studies of transport-layer security mechanisms (e.g., TLS 1.3) Paper format and submission instructions Submitted papers should be unpublished work and they should not be under review by any other conference or journal. Automated vehicles make use of a set of onboard sensors installed in the vehicle (e.g. camera, radar and lidar) that are responsible for perceiving the surrounding environment, and a set of actuators that control its longitudinal and lateral movements. One of the development objectives is to automatically perform driving tasks with less or even without driver intervention. Several studies have already shown that the sensors used in the perception process have limitations that might degrade the performance of automated vehicles. For example, in adverse weather conditions (such as rain, snow and fog), the cameras will not be able to adequately capture the environment, and in situations where the sensor’s field of vision is blocked (by other vehicles or buildings) none of the current sensors can detect beyond the position of the obstacle. To overcome these limitations and improve the perception capabilities of the vehicles, cooperative perception enables the wireless exchange of sensor information between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure nodes. Cooperative perception, also known as cooperative sensing or collective perception, enables vehicles and infrastructure nodes to detect objects (e.g. non-connected vehicles, pedestrians, obstacles) beyond their local sensing capabilities. Cooperative perception can be key for extended and timely detection of the surrounding environment and can also enable cooperative applications by compensating low penetration rates of connected road users, thus facilitating the future deployment of automated vehicles. The purpose of this Special Issue is to present and discuss major research challenges, latest developments, and recent advances on cooperative perception. This Special Issue solicits the submission of high-quality papers from academia and industry that aim to solve open technical problems or challenges in the context of cooperative perception. Original and innovative contributions on all aspects, both theoretical and experimental, are all welcome. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. The Internet of Things-enabled WSNs are usually characterized by the ability of remotely and precisely locating specific sensing elements, interrogating them and controlling the way it suits the application. This enables innovative deployment models of IoT applications, however, energy efficiency still a big issue in this environment. For WSNs, energy and powering have long been the main challenges that hampers autonomous and perpetual operation of such systems. As such power efficiency algorithms, systems, intelligence and platforms have been and are constantly being investigated and solution pursued and proposed constantly. Of particular interest, in this domain, are energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs), whether fully autonomous or backed by batteries. The EHWSNs which are fully powered by environmentally harvested energy constitute the most appealing solutions that strive to meet the target of enabling large scale deployment of WSNs in “set and forget” scenarios. With these desirable features, which are becoming reality from the industrial side, are emerging challenges to the networking community in proposing networking software, platforms and protocols which are fully context-aware and more importantly, power-aware to ensure synchronized and timely scheduling of the data transmission rounds/cycles in an opportunistic manner. This workshop is inviting contributions that fall into this context, whether these are networking platforms, systems or protocols that are energy-efficient, context-aware and supportive of EH-WSNs or AI/ML assisted methods for enhancing power efficiency in IoT Systems. Despite the improved capabilities and breadth of available sensor systems, those used for intelligent transportation have remained relatively uniform across platforms; as a result, the algorithms and techniques being designed do not take full advantage of the rich information modern sensors can provide. Since all tasks -- including perception, localisation, decision-making, and learning -- are built on top of sensing, exploring alternative approaches to sensing is a compelling research area that can render all subsequent tasks more robust and accurate. The objective of this special session is to explore unconventional sensing for intelligent transportation in three ways. Firstly, it will investigate sensor systems that are not typically applied to certain transportation tasks, such as radar for precise localisation, audio for failure detection, and RF sensing for road traffic estimation. Secondly, it will explore untraditional sensor configurations and placements, such as ground-facing cameras using shadows to detect occluded moving objects. Lastly, it will look into the sensing of commonly overlooked information, such as the use of atmospheric sensors for gauging road surface traction or in-vehicle sensors for driving analysis. Via these three themes, this special session aims to stimulate discussion and research into untraditional sensing in order to improve the reliability and accuracy of transportation systems. The advanced networking paradigms such as programmable and virtual networks, growth in communication technologies like 5G, and use of advanced computing infrastructure such as fog/edge/cloud computing can all contribute in the applications related to smart cities. An appealing alternative that have gained momentum in the IoT landscape, is to equip the nodes with long-range low power radio modules. As a result, long-range radio communication technologies (e.g., SigFox, LoRa, NB-IoT, and 802.15.4g) are considered as candidate technologies for many low-power wide area network (LPWAN) applications, especially those that require extended coverage such as citywide sensing, environmental monitoring, or remote infrastructure monitoring. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the field of IoT from both academia and industry, to discuss and explore short- and long-range solutions, the tradeoffs between these two paradigms, as well as how they can be used in synergy. In order to push the state of the art, several points need to be addressed: new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming), radio resource management, regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing, business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. An edge system is composed of any computing and networking resources along the path between data sources and cloud data centers. Industrial agriculture has many advantages. For example, the use of specialized machinery lightens farmer’s labor intensity. Large-scale monoculture crops planting and intensive farming achieve higher food yields with lower price. In plant factory, the cultivation environment can be artificially controlled, so the vegetables grow faster than in outdoor conditions. However, industrial agriculture also causes some negative impacts on ecological system due to the high energy consumption and serious environmental degradation. Tractors, combines, cultivators and other agricultural machinery not only consume much fossil fuels but also degrade soil. The use of too much synthetic fertilizers and pesticides contaminate local rivers and water sources. Water is often overused in the irrigation stage. Industry 4.0, that built on leading-edge technologies, will be a transforming force to reshape the industrial agriculture. Through wireless sensor network, unmanned aerial vehicle and satellite imagery, the ubiquitous sensing can collect valuable data during food production. Precision agriculture helps to save use of fertilizer and water. Solar photovoltaic power harvesting and wireless energy transfer is a key approach to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Smart microclimate control in greenhouse and plant factory enables deep understanding on the interaction between gene, environment and phenotype. Artificial intelligence and big data makes the industrial agriculture more intelligent. Of particular interest, in this domain, are energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs), whether fully autonomous or backed by batteries. The EHWSNs which are fully powered by environmentally harvested energy constitute the most appealing solutions that strive to meet the target of enabling large scale deployment of WSNs in “set and forget” scenarios. With these desirable features, which are becoming reality from the industrial side, are emerging challenges to the networking community in proposing networking software, platforms and protocols which are fully context-aware and more importantly, power-aware to ensure synchronized and timely scheduling of the data transmission rounds/cycles in an opportunistic manner. This workshop is inviting contributions that fall into this context, whether these are networking platforms, systems or protocols that are energy-efficient, context-aware and supportive of EH-WSNs or AI/ML assisted methods for enhancing power efficiency in IoT Systems. ICNP’s focus is on networks and their protocols, and while this encompasses a broad range of topics including aspects of design, analysis, measurement, architecture, etc., papers need to articulate some relevance to networking and protocols. Those that do not will be returned as out-of-scope. If you are in doubt as to whether your paper is a fit for ICNP, please reach out to the Program co-Chairs. Formatting Papers should adhere to the IEEE Conference formatting requirements using the templates available here, and should not exceed 10 pages excluding references. Your goal as an author is to produce a readable submission that complies with the formatting constraints. Violating the formatting requirements to squeeze in additional material will result in your submission being returned without being reviewed. Plagiarism and Submission Policy Papers must present original contributions and can neither be previously published nor under review by another conference or journal. Papers containing plagiarized material will be subject to the IEEE plagiarism policy and possible penalties, and will be rejected without review. Submissions and Anonymity Papers submitted to the conference will be reviewed through a double-blind review process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers (and that of the reviewers from the authors). Achieving this goal requires some care to, on the one hand, preserve the anonymity of your submission, while on the other hand ensuring proper coverage of related past work, including your own. While this may seem challenging, the few basic steps listed below will go a long way towards achieving the desired outcome: Remove all authors' identifiers, e.g., names, emails, and affiliations, from the title page. Remove acknowledgments to and identifiers of funding sources. Use anonymous names for your files, as source file names are often embedded in the final output you generate, and therefore accessible as comments. When referring to your own related work, refer to it in the third person as you would with any other related work by another author. Besides anonymizing your submission, double-blind reviewing also imposes additional requirements on both authors and reviewers. Specifically, while it is permissible for authors to give local talks on their work and release their paper on a non-peer-reviewed location, e.g., and institutional repository or even arXiv, care should be exercised to limit public exposure as much as possible. This includes refraining from advertising the work on mailing lists and public forums, and in general limiting as much as possible the odds that program committee members be exposed to the work and the authors’ identity. Conversely, program committee members will be advised to neither actively seek to “reverse engineer” the authors’ identity, nor to directly share with other program committee members any such information they may have acquired. All questions regarding possible breaches of the anonymity covenant that underlies the double-blind review process will be adjudicated by the Program co-Chairs. Best Paper Award and Fast-Track Journal Publication One of the accepted papers will be selected for a best paper award. Up to two of the best papers from ICNP may be fast tracked in the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, with a streamlined journal review process. Presentation and Registration Requirements It is IMPERATIVE that at least one of the authors of any accepted paper register for the conference at the full rate and be available to present the paper at the conference. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the paper’s withdrawal from the conference proceedings and IEEE Xplore. Exceptions to this policy will only be granted for truly mitigating circumstances and must be approved by the Program co-Chairs before the beginning of the conference.
