Innovative solutions are built upon these drone networking primitives to accomplish cost-effective and wide-ranging mission-critical applications, including search and rescue, surveillance, 3D-mapping, farmland and construction monitoring, delivery of light-weight objects and products, and video production. * DroNet welcomes contributions dealing with all facets of drones as mobile computing platforms, including system aspects, theoretical studies, algorithm and protocol design, as well as requirements, constraints, dependability, and regulations. We are particularly looking for papers reporting on experimental results of deployed systems, summaries of challenges or advancements, measurements, and innovative applications. The symbiosis between UAVs and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) started quite naturally: UAVs perform remote sensing, act as data-mule that carry the data collected by the WSN. Evolving WSN in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, single or multiple Drones/UAVs can cooperatively provide services that require efficient protocols where multiple objectives and constraints should be accounted. For this workshop, we search for papers that combine design of algorithms, optimization, and test-bed to develop the theoretical foundations for the UAV systems operating in symbiosis with WSN in IoT applications. The numerous emergent applications nurtured by IoT may require an interdisciplinary approach, involving techniques from algorithm foundations and different areas, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling, machine learning. The current trend is towards the development of connected machines able to interact with each other as well as to send data and access cloud and Internet services. In particular, real-world industrial use cases are usually characterized by stricter Quality of Service (QoS) requirements compared with traditional IoT applications, especially in terms of reduced latency, limited (or no) packet loss, wide and guaranteed bandwidth. Moreover, the integration of consolidated Operational Technology (OT) processes and relatively novel Information Technology (IT) services poses novel challenging issues in terms of safety and security (e.g., cyber-attacks could compromise the functionalities of machines also representing a risk for human operators). Smart components and services within industrial environments represent a novel and promising solution not only to better support QoS requirements, but also to more easily reconcile safety requirements of OT with the openness and dynamicity typical of the IT. Moreover, the emergence of edge devices equipped with relatively high computational, memory, and storage capabilities facilitates the adoption of these technologies. They are not only able to increase the efficiency of existing industrial processes, e.g., by more promptly identifying faulty machines to reduce the downtime and maximize OLE/OEE KPIs, but also to provide new business opportunities, e.g., by widening the market offering industrial equipment based on pay-per-use fees. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners interested in or working on innovative solutions for smart services in industrial environments. Experimental use cases based on real-world testbeds are particularly welcome. The proliferation of IoT devices as well as the numerous use cases reveal the very promising potentials of IoT in revolutionizing several aspects of common activities as well as business processes. The vision of interconnecting billions of devices in a holistic network, where machines communicate along with traditional human communications is now being realized, towards the formation of the Internet of Everything (as called by Cisco). The workshop focuses on Industrial Internet of Things systems and applications, which represent the highest value segment of the IoT market. The heavy research endeavors of last years have provided efficient solutions and enhanced technologies that enable the creation of such a network, overcoming several challenges stemming from the special attributes of device-to-device communications, embedded devices, and big data management. The new challenge is to identify efficient ways of integrating IoT technologies in contemporary applications exploiting the potentials of real-time monitoring, interactive control, self-management, and data analytics towards “smart” behavior and enhanced performance. However, UTs are constrained by limited resources, such as CPU computing power, storage space, energy capacities, environmental awareness and complex computing tasks. To solve the above contradictions, one effective way is to offload complex computing tasks from UTs either to remote cloud servers or nearby edge servers. Compared to cloud servers, edge servers are closer to UTs and thus achieve lower latency; however, edge servers have low computing capacity while cloud servers have relatively sufficient computing power. Therefore, edge computing and cloud computing can cooperate and complement with each other in terms of computing, storage, and communication facilities. The combination of edge and cloud computing will make task execution faster, cheaper, and more stable. This thematic series is devoted to state-of-the-art research covering concepts of task offloading technologies for IoT applications. It is of great significance to the rapid promotion of collaboration between Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). With the continuous development of theory and methods of decision-making and thorough perception of the hybrid task offloading, and further meets the application requirements on UTs, compensates for the lack of computing capacity and limited battery power for IoT systems. Combined with advances in big data analytics, big computing, and big networking technologies, machine learning provides a mechanism for carrying out big modeling and intelligence, and has achieved great success in a number of fields. Despite these achievements, the leveraging of machine learning in IoT faces significant challenges to achieving artificial intelligence-enabled Internet of dependable and controllable things, and must take into account the exceptional requirements for connectivity, latency, scalability, accessibility, security, and resiliency that IoT systems pose. The seamless integration of machine learning into IoT systems thus creates opportunities for novel research and necessitates interdisciplinary efforts to solve these challenges. Best, Michele Polese, Marco Giordani, Michele Zorzi ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Session – Future trends for standardization and design of vehicular networks Recent evolution of the automotive industry have enabled the development of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), with the goal to promote increased traffic efficiency and enhanced safety for vehicles and pedestrians. Wireless networks can fully unleash the potential of CAVs by promoting cooperation among vehicles and the fixed infrastructure on roads and highways, and this has motivated the study of different technologies for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications (also jointly referred to as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) networking). As of today, the two main radio technologies that support V2X communications are 3GPP Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) and IEEE 802.11p. These, however, will not completely fulfill the foreseen challenging requirements (in terms of, e.g., ultra low latency, and ultra high reliability and throughput) of future vehicular services. This motivates the design and analysis of next-generation V2I and V2V networks, with the introduction of new, more capable technologies. In this regard, the 3GPP and the IEEE are presenting new study items, specifications and standard drafts on future vehicular networks. 3GPP NR-V2X extends the specifications of 3GPP NR to support sidelink communications, and integrates in vehicular networks the flexibility of the NR frame, protocol stack and spectrum usage. Similarly, IEEE 802.11bd targets communications in the usual 5.9 GHz band, but also in the unlicensed mmWave spectrum. The usage of a heterogeneous set of spectrum bands and technologies (sub-6 GHz, mmWaves, VLC) could benefit future connected services, but, at the same time, introduces the need for new research and standardization efforts that range from channel modeling, to the design of the full-protocol stack, with challenges at the physical, MAC, network and transport layers. This special session aims at collecting original contributions that can advance the state of the art on the design challenges for V2X networks, with a focus on three main areas of interest. First of all, we look forward to submissions that discuss 3GPP and IEEE standardization efforts, as well as of new services, applications, business models and trials of V2X networks. Second, it is of particular interest the analysis and design of channel models, physical layer, beam and/or mobility management, resource allocation, network and transport layer schemes for next-generation V2X, with a focus also on mmWave and VLC communications. Finally, this special session welcomes papers on the application of learning techniques in vehicular scenarios, and on security and privacy concerns for V2X, especially if linked to standard proposals and developments. IoT devices and sensors can then exploit the hierarchical structure of the edge and cloud system to analyze the collected data and provide useful information to users in a timely manner. For example, wearable sensors could use the computing resources of the user’s smartphone, laptop, or even smart vehicle to analyze the collected data. Because a large majority of edge devices are battery operated and have limited connectivity, the energy efficiency of computation becomes critical. To this end, it is important to minimize the energy consumption of all the components of an edge system, including sensors, IoT devices, edge nodes, and network devices while guaranteeing the desired performance. In the past decade, the research community have produced proven solutions to build low-power mesh networks. Traditionally, the focus has been on short-range radio communication (e.g., ZigBee, Bluetooth, and ZWave.). An appealing alternative that have gained momentum in the IoT landscape, is to equip the nodes with long-range low power radio modules. As a result, long-range radio communication technologies (e.g., SigFox, LoRa, NB-IoT, and 802.15.4g) are considered as candidate technologies for many low-power wide area network (LPWAN) applications, especially those that require extended coverage such as citywide sensing, environmental monitoring, or remote infrastructure monitoring. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the field of IoT from both academia and industry, to discuss and explore short- and long-range solutions, the tradeoffs between these two paradigms, as well as how they can be used in synergy. In order to push the state of the art, several points need to be addressed: new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming), radio resource management, regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing, business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. Such networks are envisioned to consist of wireless sensors, robots and unmanned (aerial, ground, underwater) vehicles and are being used in environmental monitoring, border surveillance, network provisioning, delivery, construction, emergency or disaster assistance. The challenges in the design of these networks range from physical control of the vehicles, navigation, to communication limitations. Due to diverse and interdisciplinary nature of these challenges, algorithms and design principles proposed by networking, robotics, control theory, computer vision and artificial intelligence research communities will need to be utilized. To submit your paper, it is required that the manuscript follows the standard IEEE camera-ready format (double column, 10-pt font) and be submitted as PDF file (formatted for 8.5-11 inch paper) as well as the requirement set by the EDAS paper submission system. Submitted paper must be original and unpublished papers with no more than 6 pages, including bibliography. The organizing committee of IAUV reserves the right to not review papers that either exceed the length specification or have been submitted or published elsewhere. The current trend is towards the development of connected machines able to interact with each other as well as to send data and access cloud and Internet services. In particular, real-world industrial use cases are usually characterized by stricter Quality of Service (QoS) requirements compared with traditional IoT applications, especially in terms of reduced latency, limited (or no) packet loss, wide and guaranteed bandwidth. Moreover, the integration of consolidated Operational Technology (OT) processes and relatively novel Information Technology (IT) services poses novel challenging issues in terms of safety and security (e.g., cyber-attacks could compromise the functionalities of machines also representing a risk for human operators). Smart components and services within industrial environments represent a novel and promising solution not only to better support QoS requirements, but also to more easily reconcile safety requirements of OT with the openness and dynamicity typical of the IT. Moreover, the emergence of edge devices equipped with relatively high computational, memory, and storage capabilities facilitates the adoption of these technologies. They are not only able to increase the efficiency of existing industrial processes, e.g., by more promptly identifying faulty machines to reduce the downtime and maximize OLE/OEE KPIs, but also to provide new business opportunities, e.g., by widening the market offering industrial equipment based on pay-per-use fees. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners interested in or working on innovative solutions for smart services in industrial environments. Experimental use cases based on real-world testbeds are particularly welcome. An edge system is composed of any computing and networking resources along the path between data sources and cloud data centers. Depending on the specific computing needs, edge computing devices can use either a wireless or a wired connection to exchange messages with the data sources. IoT devices and sensors can then exploit the hierarchical structure of the edge and cloud system to analyze the collected data and provide useful information to users in a timely manner. For example, wearable sensors could use the computing resources of the user’s smartphone, laptop, or even smart vehicle to analyze the collected data. Because a large majority of edge devices are battery operated and have limited connectivity, the energy efficiency of computation becomes critical. To this end, it is important to minimize the energy consumption of all the components of an edge system, including sensors, IoT devices, edge nodes, and network devices while guaranteeing the desired performance. Recently, wireless power transfer (WPT) enables transfer of electrical energy from a power source to an electrical load without interconnecting wires, which gains increasingly popularity in many applications, such as home appliances, medical implants, consumer electronics, and space robots. With WPT technologies, wireless devices are able to harvest energy from dedicated wireless transmitters to support their operation and information transmission. Thus, It is also a new promising solution to extend the lifetime of energy-constrained wireless networks and has been regarded as a key enabling technology for truly perpetual communications (e.g., RFID, body area networks, wireless sensor networks, Machine-to-Machine communications, the Internet of things). This workshop is expected to bring together academic and industrial researchers in an effort to discuss the major technical challenges and contribute recent state-of-art technologies related to the computing technologies in wireless power and communication networks (WPCNs). And we also attempts to investigate the advanced scheduling methods for WPCNs. Out-of-Scope The "other areas of data communications" in the last bullet above should not be interpreted as a "catch-all" category. ICNP’s focus is on networks and their protocols, and while this encompasses a broad range of topics including aspects of design, analysis, measurement, architecture, etc., papers need to articulate some relevance to networking and protocols. Those that do not will be returned as out-of-scope. If you are in doubt as to whether your paper is a fit for ICNP, please reach out to the Program co-Chairs. Formatting Papers should adhere to the IEEE Conference formatting requirements using the templates available here, and should not exceed 10 pages excluding references. Your goal as an author is to produce a readable submission that complies with the formatting constraints. Violating the formatting requirements to squeeze in additional material will result in your submission being returned without being reviewed. Plagiarism and Submission Policy Papers must present original contributions and can neither be previously published nor under review by another conference or journal. Papers containing plagiarized material will be subject to the IEEE plagiarism policy and possible penalties, and will be rejected without review. Submissions and Anonymity Papers submitted to the conference will be reviewed through a double-blind review process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers (and that of the reviewers from the authors). Achieving this goal requires some care to, on the one hand, preserve the anonymity of your submission, while on the other hand ensuring proper coverage of related past work, including your own. While this may seem challenging, the few basic steps listed below will go a long way towards achieving the desired outcome: • Remove all authors' identifiers, e.g., names, emails, and affiliations, from the title page. • Remove acknowledgments to and identifiers of funding sources. • Use anonymous names for your files, as source file names are often embedded in the final output you generate, and therefore accessible as comments. • When referring to your own related work, refer to it in the third person as you would with any other related work by another author. Besides anonymizing your submission, double-blind reviewing also imposes additional requirements on both authors and reviewers. Specifically, while it is permissible for authors to give local talks on their work and release their paper on a non-peer-reviewed location, e.g., and institutional repository or even arXiv, care should be exercised to limit public exposure as much as possible. This includes refraining from advertising the work on mailing lists and public forums, and in general limiting as much as possible the odds that program committee members be exposed to the work and the authors’ identity. Conversely, program committee members will be advised to neither actively seek to “reverse engineer” the authors’ identity, nor to directly share with other program committee members any such information they may have acquired. All questions regarding possible breaches of the anonymity covenant that underlies the double-blind review process will be adjudicated by the Program co-Chairs. Best Paper Award and Fast-Track Journal Publication One of the accepted papers will be selected for a best paper award. Up to two of the best papers from ICNP may be fast tracked in the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, with a streamlined journal review process. Presentation and Registration Requirements It is IMPERATIVE that at least one of the authors of any accepted paper register for the conference at the full rate and be available to present the paper at the conference. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the paper’s withdrawal from the conference proceedings and IEEE Xplore. The primary focus of this session will be on civilian applications of drones. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - UAV integration in Cellular and Vehicular Networks - Path/trajectory planning - Radio resource management for UAV communications - Interference management, localization and positioning for UAVs - Backhaul for aerial BS (UAVs) - Visible Light Communication with UAVs - Channel modeling and propagation (Air-to-Air, Air-to-Ground) - 5G and b5G, mmWave and Massive MIMO for drones - UAVs for IoT applications - MEC schemes for UAV-enabled networks - Testbeds, demonstrations, field trials, and prototyping - Machine learning for UAV communications - Economical frameworks for UAV communications (e.g., cost studies, business models) - Regulatory schemes for UAV communications (e.g., safety operation, privacy protection) We invite submission of original work not previously published or under review at another conference or journal. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit a 6-page IEEE conference style paper (including all text, figures, and references) through EDAS submission system. Papers exceeding the maximum length of six pages will be subject to an over-length charge of 100 euro per additional page (a maximum of two pages can be added).
