However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service. In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to manage the resources effectively. More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall quality of service. Keeping this in mind, this special issue will address the resource management in IoT edge devices with the focus on various challenges faced, and potential techniques and solutions to address such challenges by leveraging IoT edge devices. The researchers, both at the academic and industrial level, working on resource management in IoT edge devices can share their latest results to create wider awareness about their schemes. INTRODUCTION The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is incorporating “things” from the physical world into the Internet environment to enhance the monitoring and intelligent control of physical, digital and social systems. Such things include smart infrastructures like power grids with sensing and actuation capabilities, mobile platforms like smart phones and vehicles, and consumer electronics and appliances such as refrigerators and healthcare devices. In conventional cloud-centric IoT applications, the observational streams from these things at the edge of the network are extracted, accumulated and processed centrally at public/private clouds, and the responses are communicated back to the things, leading to significant latency and bandwidth costs. To meet the ever-increasing demand for computing resources from distributed applications in the wide area network, academics and industry experts are advocating the use of micro data centers to supplement large cloud data centers. These micro data centers, also called fog resources, are located at the edge of the network, closer to a user in the spatial and/or network topology than cloud data centers. Further, edge devices such as smart phones and gateways themselves have non-trivial compute capacity and are even closer to the user. As a result, it is possible to utilize both the edge and fog resources to off-load computation that would traditionally have been carried out on the cloud. The "Fog/Edge computing paradigm" is expected to improve the agility of service deployments, make use of opportunistic and cheap computing, and leverage the network latency and bandwidth diversities between these resources. Numerous challenges arise when using fog and edge computing infrastructure, which requires the re-examination of operating systems, virtualization and containers, and middleware techniques for fabric management. Extensions to current programming and storage models are required and new abstractions that will allow developers to design novel applications that can benefit from massively distributed and data-driven systems need to be developed. Addressing security, privacy and trust of the edge and fog resources is of paramount importance while managing the resources and context for mobile, transient and hardware constrained resources. Lastly, emerging domains like autonomous vehicles and machine/deep learning need to be supported over such platforms. CALL FOR PAPERS The conference seeks to attract high-quality contributions covering both theory and practice over system software and domain-specific applications related to Edge, Fog and Cloud computing. In such cases, a 2-page rebuttal summarizing the changes made must be included in the appendix (excluded from the page limit), and the title of the paper be prefixed with "Revision:". These kinds of applications typically require significant computing power to perform computation-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks generated by the vehicle sensors for low-latency response. However, the limited computation capacity of the on-board computer makes it difficult to satisfy the computation requirements of quality-of-experience (QoE)-demanding applications. To tackle this challenge, fog/edge computing are proposed as innovative computing paradigms to extend computing capacity to the network edge in order to meet the requirements. Fog/edge computing is expected to not only maximize the computation capability and alleviate the greenhouse effect, but also achieve sustainable operation by pushing rich computing and storage resources to the edge of the network. The limited computation capacity of the on-board computer brings about an unprecedented challenge for the future development of ICVs. Fog/edge computing provides cloud computing capacity in close proximity to vehicles. Vehicles can migrate the computing to the edge of the network via vehicle to everything (V2X) communication. Processing can be completed at road-side unit (RSU) at the side of the network. The advancement of communication technologies and edge computing, such as Fifth-generation (5G), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), mobile edge/fog computing and so on, makes it possible to enhance computational capabilities, ensure near-real-time responses and realize communication requirements with ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. The Special Section in IEEE Access aims to provide the latest research findings and solutions, in terms of communication and edge computing for ICVs. As the Internet of things (IoT) and Tactile Internet are predictable to be a primary driving force for future cities, advanced communication methods will play a crucial role in assisting real-time data acquisition and utilization from distributed sensors. However, smart cities will also have to function within the limitations of the national economy and available resources. Consequently, the challenges in the realization of smart cities are many and varied. In general, low energy consumption, constrained bandwidth, latency and budgetary limitations are predominant. In order to overcome these hurdles, it is essential that new ideas and theories for optimizing the network in energy, spectral, latency and monetary terms are presented to achieve a robust environmental monitoring and sustainable transportation network, among other provisions. This led the researchers to pave the way for future wireless networks under the umbrella of 5G communications as well. This is an amalgamation of a multitude of technologies ranging from device-level algorithms such as low power transmissions to system-level architectures such as software-defined networking (SDN), the challenges posed by each of these techniques are critical. The smart city idea is also known to work at the intersection of various techniques such as device-to-device (D2D) communications, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, full-duplex transmissions and Internet of Things (IoT) to name a few. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a group of experts with an interest in emerging smart cities related areas. The recent advancements in smart cities has boosted the development of a new generation of highly-efficient mobile networks. After the successful editions of this workshop in renowned venues, this workshop will highlight the recent developments in this evolving area. INTRODUCTION The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is incorporating “things” from the physical world into the Internet environment to enhance the monitoring and intelligent control of physical, digital and social systems. Such things include smart infrastructures like power grids with sensing and actuation capabilities, mobile platforms like smart phones and vehicles, and consumer electronics and appliances such as refrigerators and healthcare devices. In conventional cloud-centric IoT applications, the observational streams from these things at the edge of the network are extracted, accumulated and processed centrally at public/private clouds, and the responses are communicated back to the things, leading to significant latency and bandwidth costs. To meet the ever-increasing demand for computing resources from distributed applications in the wide area network, academics and industry experts are advocating the use of micro data centers to supplement large cloud data centers. These micro data centers, also called fog resources, are located at the edge of the network, closer to a user in the spatial and/or network topology than cloud data centers. Further, edge devices such as smart phones and gateways themselves have non-trivial compute capacity and are even closer to the user. As a result, it is possible to utilize both the edge and fog resources to off-load computation that would traditionally have been carried out on the cloud. The "Fog/Edge computing paradigm" is expected to improve the agility of service deployments, make use of opportunistic and cheap computing, and leverage the network latency and bandwidth diversities between these resources. Numerous challenges arise when using fog and edge computing infrastructure, which requires the re-examination of operating systems, virtualization and containers, and middleware techniques for fabric management. Extensions to current programming and storage models are required and new abstractions that will allow developers to design novel applications that can benefit from massively distributed and data-driven systems need to be developed. Addressing security, privacy and trust of the edge and fog resources is of paramount importance while managing the resources and context for mobile, transient and hardware constrained resources. Lastly, emerging domains like autonomous vehicles and machine/deep learning need to be supported over such platforms. Moreover, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has established a working group for Deterministic Networking (DetNet) that is closely collaborating with IEEE TSN in order to bring its concepts to the Internet. On the other hand, application designers and end users need to know how to get their needed level of reliability and they have to take into account the specifics of the technology. We solicit contributions in this area from researchers and practitioners in both the academia and industry. Papers whose contributions overlap with an earlier published paper will be considered only if (1) the previous paper was published (not just accepted) at a workshop at least 6 months before our submission date and (2) it adds significant new contributions over the previous paper. Authors uncertain whether their submission meets these guidelines should contact the program chairs. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms will not be considered. Accepted submissions will be treated as confidential prior to publication; rejected submissions will be permanently treated as confidential. MobiSys will use a double-blind review policy during the initial paper review. Authors are instructed to not include their names, affiliations and contact information on the manuscript they submit for review. Authors should also anonymize the content of their paper to hide their identity. Reviewers will not know the identity of the authors during the initial phase of the review process, however, anonymity will expire after the majority of the reviews have been submitted and preliminary outcomes decided. The identities of the authors will be revealed to the reviewers toward the end of the review process. Submissions which are not properly anonymized will be rejected without being reviewed. Submissions must be in PDF. We will not accept papers in any other format. Submissions must use a 10pt font (or larger) and be correctly formatted for printing on Letter-sized (8.5" by 11") paper. Paper text blocks must follow ACM guidelines: double-column, with each column 9.25" by 3.33", 0.33" space between columns and single-spaced. Submissions MUST be *no more than twelve (12) pages + unlimited number of pages for bibliography references*. The 12-page limit includes everything (e.g., abstract, text, appendix, etc.) except for the bibliography references. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality and relevance through single-blind peer review. Papers longer than 9 pages will not be reviewed. All papers must be submitted in the Portable Document Format (PDF) electronically using EDAS. The myriad technological advances proposed for the 5G networks still mostly focus on capacity increase, which is constrained by the limited spectrum resources as well as the diminishing profits for operators and, therefore, will always lag behind the growth rate of mobile traffic. Therefore, novel distributed architectures, which bring network functions (such as computing and caching) and contents to the edge, emerges, i.e., mobile edge computing and caching, to confront the aforementioned challenges in the network development and many emerging applications, such as AR/VR, IoT, eHealth, autonomous driving , gaming etc. However, on the way towards efficient and intelligent network edge computing and caching, there are many open problems ahead. From the computing part, how to flexibly utilize the distributed computing resources at the network edge, such as mobile computing or fog computing is of significance. Moreover, what to be offloaded to the edge node and when to offload also call for research attentions. From the caching part, what, when, where and how to cache the contents to reduce the demand for radio resources are vital. Last but not the most, how to efficiently integrate computing and caching at the edge node and utilize the synergy of computing and caching also requires a breakthrough. This workshop aims to consolidate the timely and solid works of the current state-of-the art in terms of fundamental research ideas and network engineering geared towards exploiting intelligent caching and computing at the network edge. The goal of PerCrowd 2020 is to explore the impact of multi-device context in self-organizing and opportunistic computing. More in detail, The goal of this workshop is to explore the use and effect of contexts on multi-device environments to facilitate communication and cooperation among multiple devices. Bell Labs recently predicts that, by 2020, the consumption demand for digital content and services on mobile and portable devices will see a global average increase of 30 to 45 times from 2014 levels – with some markets experiencing as much as a 98-fold jump. This huge demand stimulates multiple technology developments such as mobile edge computing, Internet of things, wearables, and crowdsourcing. It also brings into focus the need for usable security mechanisms that scale. Meanwhile, as a fundamental part of numerous services including messaging, gaming, advertising, recommending, commercing, and content sharing, social networking needs to be provisioned and used via mobile devices in any place at any time. From 2016 onwards, Facebook had around one billion monthly active users who accessed Facebook via only mobile devices. Utilizing the emerging mobile technologies to enable pervasive and enriched social interactions has become a vital trend. The 12th Workshop on Hot Topics in Pervasive mObile Social neTworking (HotPOST 2020) aims to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners who work on mobile computing, social networks, and the intersection of both, to identify new problems and discuss latest research ideas and results, especially those related to emerging technologies. HotPOST 2020 focuses on all aspects of mobile and social networking, including architecture, design, implementation, measurement, modeling, algorithms, and analysis. The topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: * Mobile-centric social network services * Location-based social networks * Mobile edge/fog computing and networking * Wearable computing * Mobile online advertising and payment * Internet of Things, AR/VR, and crowdsourcing * Measurement of mobile systems and applications * User behavior analysis in mobile applications * Usable and scalable security and privacy in mobile systems and social networks * Reputation, incentives, and economics in mobile systems * Modeling and algorithm design for mobile systems Authors are encouraged to submit papers describing original and unpublished research, not currently under review in other venues, addressing state-of-the-art research and development in all aspects of mobile computing, social networks, or the intersection of both. A decentralized approach to IoT systems and security brings forth many opportunities but also challenges, such as operating with constrained devices, with intermittent network connectivity, state synchronization, and trust management — these and additional challenges listed below would be the scope of the proposed workshop. Precision agriculture helps to save use of fertilizer and water. Solar photovoltaic power harvesting and wireless energy transfer is a key approach to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Smart microclimate control in greenhouse and plant factory enables deep understanding on the interaction between gene, environment and phenotype. Artificial intelligence and big data makes the industrial agriculture more intelligent. Pervasive computing enables computers to interact with the real world in a ubiquitous and natural manner. Quality of service (QoS), related to transmission delay, bandwidth, or packet loss, has been studied in various building blocks in pervasive computing, e.g., different QoS mechanisms are presented for wireless or wired networks; the notion of computational QoS is used for parallel processing. The emerging pervasive computing paradigm, however, is application-driven and mission-critical and the existing QoS notions to do not really match. Quality of Information (QoI) or Information Quality (IQ) of sensor-originated information relates to the fitness of the information for a sensor-enabled application. Harnessing and optimizing QoI of information derived from sensor networks will be key to bringing together information acquisition and processing systems that support the on-demand information needs of a broad spectrum of smart, sensor-enabled applications such as remote real-time habitat monitoring, utility grid monitoring, environmental control, supply-chain management, health care, machinery control, intelligent highways, military intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR), border control, and hazardous material monitoring, just to mention a few. The proliferation of smartphone has also enabled the possibility to retrieve data also by users on the move. This data collection paradigm is often called crowdsensing, or crowdsourcing, and builds upon the willingness of users to share data together, which eventually gets aggregated to provide novel services to the community. The objective of this workshop (which is unique venue in its scope for the pervasive community) is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of QoI, QoE, QoS for pervasive computing and crowdsensing in network contexts including wireless, mobile and sensor networks. Each accepted workshop paper requires a full PerCom registration (no registration is available for workshops only) Selected high quality papers will be considered for publication in the Elsevier's Pervasive and Mobile Computing (PMC) journal. To realize the vision of connected and autonomous driving, researchers and practitioners in the community have to address several challenges, such as communication systems, data analytics platforms, novel algorithms and applications, security, to name a few. Building on the success of the two workshops (MetroCAD 2018 and MetroCAD 2019), the Third IEEE International Conference on Connected and Autonomous Driving aims to bring together the researchers and practitioners on connected cars, autonomous driving, transportation systems and ride-sharing platforms to address core challenges with vehicle connectivity and autonomous driving. The conference will include invited speakers, panels, and presentations. The goal is to discuss and exchange ideas in this area and stimulate the collaboration between academia and industry partners.
