Call for Papers MobiSys 2020 seeks to present innovative and significant research on all aspects of mobile systems, applications, and services. The conference values technical contributions with working implementations and practical evaluations. We also welcome work that explores new and compelling mobile scenarios and applications as long as the work goes well beyond providing an initial vision. Papers whose contributions overlap with an earlier published paper will be considered only if (1) the previous paper was published (not just accepted) at a workshop at least 6 months before our submission date and (2) it adds significant new contributions over the previous paper. Authors uncertain whether their submission meets these guidelines should contact the program chairs. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms will not be considered. Accepted submissions will be treated as confidential prior to publication; rejected submissions will be permanently treated as confidential. MobiSys will use a double-blind review policy during the initial paper review. Authors are instructed to not include their names, affiliations and contact information on the manuscript they submit for review. Authors should also anonymize the content of their paper to hide their identity. Reviewers will not know the identity of the authors during the initial phase of the review process, however, anonymity will expire after the majority of the reviews have been submitted and preliminary outcomes decided. The identities of the authors will be revealed to the reviewers toward the end of the review process. Submissions which are not properly anonymized will be rejected without being reviewed. Submissions must be in PDF. We will not accept papers in any other format. Submissions must use a 10pt font (or larger) and be correctly formatted for printing on Letter-sized (8.5" by 11") paper. Paper text blocks must follow ACM guidelines: double-column, with each column 9.25" by 3.33", 0.33" space between columns and single-spaced. Submissions MUST be *no more than twelve (12) pages + unlimited number of pages for bibliography references*. The 12-page limit includes everything (e.g., abstract, text, appendix, etc.) except for the bibliography references. Authors remain responsible for checking that their resulting PDF meets our formatting and anonymity specifications. Submissions not following these guidelines will be rejected without review. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and technical correctness. Papers may be conditionally accepted and shepherded by a member of the program committee, with final acceptance determined by consent of the shepherd. As part of the submission process, authors of papers that describe experiments on human subjects, or that analyze nonpublic data derived from human subjects (even anonymized data), will be asked to certify that their work was vetted by an ethics review (e.g., IRB approval). We expect authors to follow the rules of their host institutions around data collection and experiments with human subjects. At least one author of an accepted paper is expected to register for the conference (at non-student rate) and present the paper in person. By integrating the advances in smart devices and edge systems with the advances in machine learning, the future role of smart edge systems, networks, and applications is becoming limitless and it's expected to revolutionize the future of the world within the next few years. This is especially important as edge systems generate ever-growing and evolving collections of data, calling for dedicated ML/AI techniques capable of handling streaming and lifelong learning problems. SmartEdge'20 aims at bringing together experts from several research communities spanning pervasive & mobile computing, wireless networks, embedded systems, Internet of Things, machine learning, big data, and data analytics to discuss data needs and interests, challenges to be addressed, tools to be developed, and new research problems on edge wireless infrastructure, edge mobile systems, rich data sets accessed or generated by edge and Internet of Things devices. The purpose of Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected mobile devices. Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness to users. As in every new technology, some challenges face the vision of the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing, which are the administrative policies and security concerns (i.e. secure data storage, secure computation, network security, data privacy, usage privacy, location privacy, etc). However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service. In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to manage the resources effectively. More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall quality of service. Keeping this in mind, this special issue will address the resource management in IoT edge devices with the focus on various challenges faced, and potential techniques and solutions to address such challenges by leveraging IoT edge devices. The researchers, both at the academic and industrial level, working on resource management in IoT edge devices can share their latest results to create wider awareness about their schemes. Smart computing is based on the synergistic combination of advances in Sensor-based technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems, Edge cloud computing, Big Data analytics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. Smart computing is a multidisciplinary domain. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, entertainment, and social media. Algorithmic and system advancements of edge cloud computing, mobile/pervasive computing, cyber-physical systems, sensor networking and social computing are taking smart computing to a new dimension and improving our ways of living. SMARTCOMP 2020 is the 6th edition of the conference and will be held in the historical city of Bologna, Italy, hosted by the University of Bologna, the holdest University of the western world. SMARTCOMP 2020 will include smart computing innovations pertaining to pervasive/ubiquitous computing, edge cloud computing, sensor networks, IoT, big data analytics, security and privacy, social computing, cognitive computing, cyber-physical systems and their application and validation within smart computing environments. This includes applications such as smart buildings, smart cities, smart grids, precision agriculture and other innovations contributing to smart living. Submission Guidelines -------------------- Paper submissions must be no longer than 8 pages and formatted according to the two-column IEEE proceedings template. IEEE provides corresponding formatting templates at IEEE conference template. Make sure to use the conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference option of the IEEEtran document class. Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (the PDF-A standard complies with that), through EDAS (https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=26894). Prior to submission, ensure that any running headers/footers, page numbering, as well as blue underlining for URLs and email addresses has been removed. All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. All presented papers will be published in the conference proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Sharing and collaboration of data and other resources would be the key for enabling sustainable ubiquitous environments, such as smart cities and societies. A timely fusion and analysis of big data, acquired from IoT and other sources, to enable highly efficient, reliable, and accurate decision-making and management of ubiquitous environments would be a grand future challenge. Computational intelligence would play a key role in this challenge (Furqan Alam, et al. 2017). The new era of Web and IoT paradigm is being enabled by the proliferation of various devices like RFIDs, sensors, and actuators. Smart devices are embedded in the environment to monitor and collect ambient information. In smart cities, intelligent services could be offered on top of such information related to any aspect of humans' activities. Some examples of services able to guarantee sustainable environments are IoT-enabled waste management, the use of IoT hardware and software technologies for the buildings energy efficiency in terms of reducing energy consumption and improving the internal comfort, smart grids, smart homes, physical security, enhanced street lighting controls, infrastructure monitoring, public safety and surveillance in indoor and outdoor environments. (2) E-health Emerging ICT technologies are playing more and more a very important role in the Healthcare sector. The efficiency of healthcare infrastructures and biomedical systems is one of the most challenging goals of modern-day society (Nguyen et al. 2019). In fact, the need of delivering quality care to patients while reducing the healthcare costs and, at the same time, tackling the nursing staff shortage problem is a primary issue. Furthermore, innovative solutions able to support and improve the elderly people quality of life exploiting emerging technologies enabling the IoT are fundamentals to create the new smart cities, thought also for people no so young. Furthermore, the behavioral analysis of elderly people is an important science aiming to prevent Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and frailty problems. A fundamental aspect in this context is to explore the use of innovative technologies enabling the Internet of Things (IoT), above all sensors, to unobtrusively capture personal data for automatically recognizing behavioral changes in elderly people. Artificial Intelligence, based on Machine Learning or Deep Learning techniques, represents a valid candidate to face these challenges. (3) IoT technologies in Transportation and Low Carbon Products Smart transportation, also known as intelligent transportation systems, is another important IoT-based application, in which intelligent transportation management, control system, communication networks, and computing techniques are integrated to make transportation systems reliable, efficient, and secure (Lin et al., 2015). In the smart transportation system, a large number of smart vehicles are included and connected with each other through wireless networks. Smart vehicles can efficiently perceive and share traffic data and schedule drivers’ travels with great efficiency, reliability, and safety. Recently, smart vehicles with Self-Driving have been designed and tested. Those smart vehicles can detect objects around them and safely manage speed during traveling without the operation of drivers. IoT-aware technologies such as software architecture based on Cloud-, Edge-or Fog-Computing play a very important role to face these challenges. Another important topic, in the smart transportation field is related to security issue, in particular managed with the block chain approach. (4) Smart Cities Smart cities can be considered a complex IoT paradigm, which aims to manage public affairs via introducing information and communication technology (ICT) solutions (Zanella et al., 2014). Smart cities can use public resources in more efficient ways, resulting in the improvement of the QoSs provided to users and the reduction of operational costs to public administrators. Smart cities may consist of several sub applications or services, including the smart gird, smart transportation, smart hospital, smart building, smart waste management, environmental monitoring, smart health, smart lighting, etc. All these sub applications, or services, should be supported by a unified communication network infrastructure, or communication networks designed for these sub applications or services should be interconnected to establish a large-scale interconnected heterogeneous network for IoT applications, with the aim of achieving the best use of public resources in cities (Lin et al. 2017). The corresponding research efforts lead to the modern information society of today. Recently, we see a rapid spread of cyber-physical applications such as telemedicine, smart production, and infrastructure systems. These systems build the backbone of Industry 4.0 environments, for example, and operate with feedback control loops that are closed over communication channels and, thus, impose real-time requirements for the communication. Predictably low latency is a necessary property, however, it challenges concurring requirements for high reliability, spectral, and energy efficiency in particular when wireless links used. Classical approaches for the independent design of communication and control have reached their limits for quite some time. The research objective in the area of cyber-physical networking is to develop a theoretical and practical basis for the paradigmatic change from throughput- to real-time-oriented communication in networked control systems. In order to meet the requirements of cyber-physical applications, a tight (horizontal and vertical) integration of all communication, control, and system components is necessary in order to fully exploit their individual elasticity and mutual adjustment potential. We understand cyber-physical networking as including all aspects of such a system, in particular network and communication, control and the physical system itself. Ultimately, this workshop aims to bring together leading researchers in the area of communication, control and systems design - to share views on approaches to bring together these domains for enabling cyber-physical networking. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of papers that (1) focus primarily on systems and applications and (2) propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We especially encourage papers that identify fundamental open questions, advocate a new approach, offer a constructive critique of the state-of-the-art, debunk existing assumptions, report unexpected early results, report on promising but unproven ideas, or propose new evaluation methods. Novel ideas need not be supported by full evaluations; well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations suffice. The program committee will explicitly favor early work and papers likely to stimulate reflection and discussion over a “6-pages conference paper.” We take a broad view of Mobile Systems research. This includes: · Novel applications, environments, and devices supporting mobility. · Operating system and distributed system support for mobile computing. · Wearable computing, internet of things, edge computing, sensing, and context-awareness. · HCI issues related to mobile computing. · Security and privacy of mobile computing. · Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility. · Wireless technology, as it pertains to mobile systems and applications. The deadline for submissions is *October 22, 2019, 11:59pm EDT (Extended)*. Acceptance notifications will be sent by December 15, 2018. Presenting at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas at least one year away from a full-fledged conference submission to ACM MobiSys or other high-quality conferences. A full-length paper on the same topic submitted to a conference in less than a year is unlikely to include sufficient new material and mature ideas to warrant publication. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to the author(s) unread. As customary with the scientific peer review process, submissions will be handled as confidential material during the review. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format, including all references, figures and tables. The submissions should not be anonymous. The submissions must meet the following formatting requirements: · Font size no smaller than 10pt. · Font size of the bibliography no smaller than 9pt. · Double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25 inches x 3.33 inches, a space of 0.33 inches between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column. · Fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5 inches x 11 inches). The student should be the *sole* author although contributions of the adviser and others should be acknowledged. With rapid economic development, the number of vehicles on the road has grown dramatically, which introduces an array of traffic-related issues, such as traffic congestion and driving safety. Intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) can provide a safer and greener transportation system, which has been envisioned as an effective measure to resolve traffic problems. ICVs are expected to run many emerging smart applications (e.g., autonomous driving, safety early warning, natural language processing, etc.) to assist both the drivers and passengers in vehicular environments. These kinds of applications typically require significant computing power to perform computation-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks generated by the vehicle sensors for low-latency response. However, the limited computation capacity of the on-board computer makes it difficult to satisfy the computation requirements of quality-of-experience (QoE)-demanding applications. To tackle this challenge, fog/edge computing are proposed as innovative computing paradigms to extend computing capacity to the network edge in order to meet the requirements. Fog/edge computing is expected to not only maximize the computation capability and alleviate the greenhouse effect, but also achieve sustainable operation by pushing rich computing and storage resources to the edge of the network. The limited computation capacity of the on-board computer brings about an unprecedented challenge for the future development of ICVs. Fog/edge computing provides cloud computing capacity in close proximity to vehicles. Vehicles can migrate the computing to the edge of the network via vehicle to everything (V2X) communication. Processing can be completed at road-side unit (RSU) at the side of the network. The advancement of communication technologies and edge computing, such as Fifth-generation (5G), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), mobile edge/fog computing and so on, makes it possible to enhance computational capabilities, ensure near-real-time responses and realize communication requirements with ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. The Special Section in IEEE Access aims to provide the latest research findings and solutions, in terms of communication and edge computing for ICVs. We envision the demonstration session as a means to exhibit innovations that have the potential to change the future landscape of consumer communications and networking. We invite researchers and developers from academic, industrial, and government laboratories to present their novel ideas and demonstrations of original research prototypes. IEEE CCNC especially welcomes demonstrations of emerging and innovative technologies that have potential commercial application from nascent and incubating companies. In addition, authors that have a demonstration component in their work and are planning to submit their papers to the main tracks are highly encouraged to also submit proposals to the demonstration session. PROPOSAL FORMAT Demonstration proposals should be one or two pages in length, in double-column IEEE format, including authors' names and affiliations and a short abstract. Each proposal should describe the main contributions of the demonstration and the merits of the proposed idea. Of course, many variations are possible. A technology prototype can range from a mockup using computers (instead of actual consumer devices) to a full-fledged collection of networked consumer devices. Be as specific as possible in describing what you will show. In addition to the proposal to be published, an additional e-mail should be sent to the chairs, including space, power and networking requirements. Demonstration proposals will be evaluated by a Committee including representatives of venture capitalists. Proposals will be evaluated mainly based on their potential to stimulate interesting discussions, exchange of ideas, and promote collaborations. The accepted demonstration proposals will also appear in the conference proceedings as well as on IEEE Xplore. The best demonstrator will receive a Demo Award. PRESENTATIONS Accepted demonstrations will be presented at the conference during a special demonstration session. The presenter is responsible for the demonstration and equipment setup. By detecting a multi-device context for harnessing collaborative and opportunistic resources in proximity, it is possible to reduce the cost of executing computational tasks in the constrained resources of devices, and to extend the presence of pervasive devices beyond their egocentric and isolated computing behavior. The impact of multi-device computing has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as continuous multi-device experience for users, formation of collaborative multi-device infrastructure, multi-device remote control systems and multi-device autonomous interactions, among others. The goal of PerCrowd 2020 is to explore the impact of multi-device context in self-organizing and opportunistic computing. More in detail, The goal of this workshop is to explore the use and effect of contexts on multi-device environments to facilitate communication and cooperation among multiple devices. Original papers addressing theoretical, practical, and technical aspects of opportunistic and self-organizing multi-device systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of informative surveys of the state of the art as well as position papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. These strict requirements are also shared by the IIoT scenario to provide unprecedented vertical integration, specialized high-level services, enhanced interoperability and availability. Furthermore, an ever more rising and ubiquitous trend in this IIoT context is represented by Digital Twins, where a real-time update of a large amount of data from the physical system is required to update the corresponding digital replica. As a consequence, both the computing architecture and the communication networks and protocols call for novel paradigms, albeit satisfying stringent low latency, high reliability and availability, safety, and security requirements. Traditional computing and communication and paradigms are not properly equipped to fulfill all these requirements, as they are typically designed to optimize different performance metrics and application scenarios. Hence, new paradigms are emerging, significantly changing the landscape of industrial automation systems and networks. In the computational realm, edge/fog computing is gaining popularity to leverage the enhanced capabilities of end devices, and at the same time, the interest in virtualization techniques is steadily increasing, with the aim of increasing the quality, timeliness and reliability of time-critical tasks. The new generations of communication systems, both wired and wireless, are also focused on ultra-reliable and ultra-low latency information delivery, as well as on enhanced features to enable time- sensitive operations, highlighted by the developing 5G and TSN standards. A common trend in both areas is the increasing adoption of approaches based on machine/deep learning to improve the adaptiveness of such system to different applications and environments. However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service. In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to manage the resources effectively. More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall quality of service. Keeping this in mind, this special issue will address the resource management in IoT edge devices with the focus on various challenges faced, and potential techniques and solutions to address such challenges by leveraging IoT edge devices. The researchers, both at the academic and industrial level, working on resource management in IoT edge devices can share their latest results to create wider awareness about their schemes. FIT IoT Lab tutorial: End-to-end application with IoT-LAB testbed Through this tutorial, you will learn how to program your own application to publish data issued from remote sensors on a web dashboard. EuroSys 2020 seeks papers on all areas of computer systems research, including: - Cloud computing and datacenter systems - Operating systems - Distributed systems - File and storage systems - Networked systems - Language support and runtime systems - Systems security and privacy - Dependable systems - Database systems and data analytics frameworks - Virtualization and virtualized systems - Systems for machine learning/machine learning for systems - Mobile and pervasive systems - Parallelism, concurrency, and multicore systems - Real-time, embedded, and cyber-physical systems - Tracing, analysis, verification, and transformation of systems We encourage papers that span multiple topics and communities. Papers will be judged on novelty, significance, correctness, and clarity. The program committee seeks papers that address a significant problem with an interesting and compelling solution whose validity and practicality are clearly demonstrated. A good paper will draw appropriate conclusions, honestly present related prior work, and clearly describe the new aspects of the authors‘ work. We welcome experience papers that clearly articulate lessons learned, as well as papers that refute prior published results. Submission Guidelines -------------------------------- Reviewing is double-blind, meaning that the authors' identities will be hidden from the reviewers and vice versa. EuroSys applies ACM‘s policies for plagiarism, submission confidentiality, reviewer anonymity, and prior and concurrent paper submission. Papers will be provisionally accepted and final acceptance will be subject to shepherding by a member of the program committee. Full submission details are available at https://www.eurosys2020.org/paper-submission/. In addition to paper presentations, EuroSys 2020 will have a poster session. Submissions for posters will open closer to the conference deadline. Accepted papers will automatically qualify for the poster session, and authors will be strongly encouraged to participate. EuroSys grants awards for the best and best student papers. Authors who are unsure whether or not their submissions might meet these guidelines, or with specific questions about the guidelines, are welcome to contact the program committee co- chairs via pc-chairs(a)eurosys2020.org Authors should take note that the official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
