Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Specialized networked systems, made of intelligent devices (such as robots and UAVs), may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and to respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. Also, they might be able to integrate within existing and upcoming mobile infrastructures (e.g. the 5G), by enabling the sensing operations on complex and dynamic scenarios, and to process the data on the edge or to offload them toward existing cloud services. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, ground and aerial robotic systems are in need of new networking techniques as well as of novel cloud/edge architectures for data gathering and processing that might unlock the potentials of such systems. To this purpose, WiSARN aims at bringing together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of sensor robotic and aerial networks. IEEE WiSARN 2020 will serve as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in the area of the workshops topic. With rapid economic development, the number of vehicles on the road has grown dramatically, which introduces an array of traffic-related issues, such as traffic congestion and driving safety. Intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) can provide a safer and greener transportation system, which has been envisioned as an effective measure to resolve traffic problems. ICVs are expected to run many emerging smart applications (e.g., autonomous driving, safety early warning, natural language processing, etc.) to assist both the drivers and passengers in vehicular environments. These kinds of applications typically require significant computing power to perform computation-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks generated by the vehicle sensors for low-latency response. However, the limited computation capacity of the on-board computer makes it difficult to satisfy the computation requirements of quality-of-experience (QoE)-demanding applications. To tackle this challenge, fog/edge computing are proposed as innovative computing paradigms to extend computing capacity to the network edge in order to meet the requirements. Fog/edge computing is expected to not only maximize the computation capability and alleviate the greenhouse effect, but also achieve sustainable operation by pushing rich computing and storage resources to the edge of the network. The limited computation capacity of the on-board computer brings about an unprecedented challenge for the future development of ICVs. Fog/edge computing provides cloud computing capacity in close proximity to vehicles. Vehicles can migrate the computing to the edge of the network via vehicle to everything (V2X) communication. Processing can be completed at road-side unit (RSU) at the side of the network. The advancement of communication technologies and edge computing, such as Fifth-generation (5G), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), mobile edge/fog computing and so on, makes it possible to enhance computational capabilities, ensure near-real-time responses and realize communication requirements with ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. The Special Section in IEEE Access aims to provide the latest research findings and solutions, in terms of communication and edge computing for ICVs. On the other hand, with the increasing computing capacity and communication capabilities of mobile terminal devices, fog-edge computing, as an important and effective supplement of cloud computing, has been widely used to process the local real-time data. As the Internet of things (IoT) and Tactile Internet are predictable to be a primary driving force for future cities, advanced communication methods will play a crucial role in assisting real-time data acquisition and utilization from distributed sensors. However, smart cities will also have to function within the limitations of the national economy and available resources. Consequently, the challenges in the realization of smart cities are many and varied. In general, low energy consumption, constrained bandwidth, latency and budgetary limitations are predominant. In order to overcome these hurdles, it is essential that new ideas and theories for optimizing the network in energy, spectral, latency and monetary terms are presented to achieve a robust environmental monitoring and sustainable transportation network, among other provisions. This led the researchers to pave the way for future wireless networks under the umbrella of 5G communications as well. This is an amalgamation of a multitude of technologies ranging from device-level algorithms such as low power transmissions to system-level architectures such as software-defined networking (SDN), the challenges posed by each of these techniques are critical. The smart city idea is also known to work at the intersection of various techniques such as device-to-device (D2D) communications, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, full-duplex transmissions and Internet of Things (IoT) to name a few. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a group of experts with an interest in emerging smart cities related areas. INTRODUCTION The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is incorporating “things” from the physical world into the Internet environment to enhance the monitoring and intelligent control of physical, digital and social systems. Such things include smart infrastructures like power grids with sensing and actuation capabilities, mobile platforms like smart phones and vehicles, and consumer electronics and appliances such as refrigerators and healthcare devices. In conventional cloud-centric IoT applications, the observational streams from these things at the edge of the network are extracted, accumulated and processed centrally at public/private clouds, and the responses are communicated back to the things, leading to significant latency and bandwidth costs. To meet the ever-increasing demand for computing resources from distributed applications in the wide area network, academics and industry experts are advocating the use of micro data centers to supplement large cloud data centers. These micro data centers, also called fog resources, are located at the edge of the network, closer to a user in the spatial and/or network topology than cloud data centers. Further, edge devices such as smart phones and gateways themselves have non-trivial compute capacity and are even closer to the user. As a result, it is possible to utilize both the edge and fog resources to off-load computation that would traditionally have been carried out on the cloud. The "Fog/Edge computing paradigm" is expected to improve the agility of service deployments, make use of opportunistic and cheap computing, and leverage the network latency and bandwidth diversities between these resources. Numerous challenges arise when using fog and edge computing infrastructure, which requires the re-examination of operating systems, virtualization and containers, and middleware techniques for fabric management. Extensions to current programming and storage models are required and new abstractions that will allow developers to design novel applications that can benefit from massively distributed and data-driven systems need to be developed. Addressing security, privacy and trust of the edge and fog resources is of paramount importance while managing the resources and context for mobile, transient and hardware constrained resources. Lastly, emerging domains like autonomous vehicles and machine/deep learning need to be supported over such platforms. CALL FOR PAPERS The conference seeks to attract high-quality contributions covering both theory and practice over system software and domain-specific applications related to Edge, Fog and Cloud computing. Papers submitted to either rounds will be evaluated by the same program committee using the same evaluation criteria. Papers not accepted in the Early Submission round may resubmit a revised version to the Regular submission round provided significant changes have been made to address the reviewer comments. In such cases, a 2-page rebuttal summarizing the changes made must be included in the appendix (excluded from the page limit), and the title of the paper be prefixed with "Revision:". We invite authors to submit original manuscripts that have neither been published elsewhere nor are under review at a different venue. The manuscripts should be structured as technical papers, written in English. Authors should submit papers electronically in PDF format and may not exceed 10 letter-size pages in length, including all figures, tables and references. Mobile and social sensing is becoming a paradigm for collecting observations of the physical phenomena, either directly from human observers, or by means of crowd-sourcing the data measurement tasks using sensors in the smart phones or various other wearables (e.g., Google Glass, Apple Watch, and Fitbit devices). It thus involves massive amount of sensory data collection and/or dissemination where humans can act as sensor carriers (e.g., carrying GPS sensors that share location data), sensor operators (e.g., taking pictures and videos with smart phones), or as sensors themselves (e.g., sharing their observations on social media). This emerging field faces new challenges in data collection, dissemination, fusion, and mining; cognitive modeling; computational social and behavior science; information and coding theory; information processing and knowledge discovery; data dissemination and forwarding, reliability, privacy, and security; and cyber-physical-systems with human-in/on-the-loop. This special issue invites technical papers on both theoretical contributions and systems describing original ideas, exciting results, and real-world experiences in the context of mobile and social sensing. Such applications and services may demand various levels of performance of their CPS network infrastructure, from strict and deterministic to lenient or probabilistic ones, for system agility, safety, stability and resilience. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in modeling and analyzing network infrastructure in CPS and advancing its design and application. For example, there is a technological convergence in realizing delay-constrained CPS based on real-time-capable Ethernet. IEEE TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking) technologies have been discussed to be incorporated into Profinet (Process Field Net) and AFDX (Avionic Full-Duplex Ethernet). Moreover, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has established a working group for Deterministic Networking (DetNet) that is closely collaborating with IEEE TSN in order to bring its concepts to the Internet. Additionally, in the context of 5G networks, the Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) require new methods to prove guaranteed low latency for safety-critical CPS (e.g. self-driving vehicles) in the presence of highly volatile wireless channels potentially affected by deep fades and cell edge situations. Authors uncertain whether their submission meets these guidelines should contact the program chairs. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms will not be considered. MobiSys will use a double-blind review policy during the initial paper review. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality and relevance through single-blind peer review. Submitted papers should be written in the English language, with a maximum length limit of 9 printed pages, including all the figures, references, and appendices. Papers longer than 9 pages will not be reviewed. All papers must be submitted in the Portable Document Format (PDF) electronically using EDAS. The myriad technological advances proposed for the 5G networks still mostly focus on capacity increase, which is constrained by the limited spectrum resources as well as the diminishing profits for operators and, therefore, will always lag behind the growth rate of mobile traffic. Therefore, novel distributed architectures, which bring network functions (such as computing and caching) and contents to the edge, emerges, i.e., mobile edge computing and caching, to confront the aforementioned challenges in the network development and many emerging applications, such as AR/VR, IoT, eHealth, autonomous driving , gaming etc. However, on the way towards efficient and intelligent network edge computing and caching, there are many open problems ahead. From the computing part, how to flexibly utilize the distributed computing resources at the network edge, such as mobile computing or fog computing is of significance. Moreover, what to be offloaded to the edge node and when to offload also call for research attentions. From the caching part, what, when, where and how to cache the contents to reduce the demand for radio resources are vital. Last but not the most, how to efficiently integrate computing and caching at the edge node and utilize the synergy of computing and caching also requires a breakthrough. This workshop aims to consolidate the timely and solid works of the current state-of-the art in terms of fundamental research ideas and network engineering geared towards exploiting intelligent caching and computing at the network edge. The topics of interests related to edge caching and computing include (but are not limited to): System modelling: Computation modelling, caching modelling, energy consumption modelling etc.; Enabling technologies: e.g., SDN, NFV, CRAN, D2D, cloud/fog computing and networking, etc.; Application areas: vehicular networking, IoT, smart grid etc; Novel network architecture: convergence of computing, communications and caching, content/information-centric network, cognitive computing and networking, big data analytic; Context-aware schemes: incentive mechanism for computing and caching, pricing, game theoretic approach, network economic etc, caching placement and delivery; Mobility management for mobile edge computing and proactive caching; Energy efficiency aspects: energy harvesting, energy storage, energy transfer, etc; Security and privacy issue; Prototyping, test-beds and field trials. This huge demand stimulates multiple technology developments such as mobile edge computing, Internet of things, wearables, and crowdsourcing. It also brings into focus the need for usable security mechanisms that scale. Meanwhile, as a fundamental part of numerous services including messaging, gaming, advertising, recommending, commercing, and content sharing, social networking needs to be provisioned and used via mobile devices in any place at any time. From 2016 onwards, Facebook had around one billion monthly active users who accessed Facebook via only mobile devices. Utilizing the emerging mobile technologies to enable pervasive and enriched social interactions has become a vital trend. The 12th Workshop on Hot Topics in Pervasive mObile Social neTworking (HotPOST 2020) aims to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners who work on mobile computing, social networks, and the intersection of both, to identify new problems and discuss latest research ideas and results, especially those related to emerging technologies. HotPOST 2020 focuses on all aspects of mobile and social networking, including architecture, design, implementation, measurement, modeling, algorithms, and analysis. Industrial agriculture has many advantages. For example, the use of specialized machinery lightens farmer’s labor intensity. Large-scale monoculture crops planting and intensive farming achieve higher food yields with lower price. In plant factory, the cultivation environment can be artificially controlled, so the vegetables grow faster than in outdoor conditions. However, industrial agriculture also causes some negative impacts on ecological system due to the high energy consumption and serious environmental degradation. Tractors, combines, cultivators and other agricultural machinery not only consume much fossil fuels but also degrade soil. The use of too much synthetic fertilizers and pesticides contaminate local rivers and water sources. Water is often overused in the irrigation stage. Industry 4.0, that built on leading-edge technologies, will be a transforming force to reshape the industrial agriculture. Through wireless sensor network, unmanned aerial vehicle and satellite imagery, the ubiquitous sensing can collect valuable data during food production. Precision agriculture helps to save use of fertilizer and water. Solar photovoltaic power harvesting and wireless energy transfer is a key approach to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Smart microclimate control in greenhouse and plant factory enables deep understanding on the interaction between gene, environment and phenotype. Artificial intelligence and big data makes the industrial agriculture more intelligent. The satisfaction of security and privacy requirements will play a fundamental role in the SEs; indeed, without effective mechanisms, attacks and malfunctions in the IoT will outweigh any of their benefits. The PERSIST-IoT workshop aims to solicit a collection of innovative papers reporting the most recent advancements in the fields of smart architecture, protocols and practical implementations enabling IoT for smart environments. Quality of Information (QoI) or Information Quality (IQ) of sensor-originated information relates to the fitness of the information for a sensor-enabled application. Harnessing and optimizing QoI of information derived from sensor networks will be key to bringing together information acquisition and processing systems that support the on-demand information needs of a broad spectrum of smart, sensor-enabled applications such as remote real-time habitat monitoring, utility grid monitoring, environmental control, supply-chain management, health care, machinery control, intelligent highways, military intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR), border control, and hazardous material monitoring, just to mention a few. The proliferation of smartphone has also enabled the possibility to retrieve data also by users on the move. This data collection paradigm is often called crowdsensing, or crowdsourcing, and builds upon the willingness of users to share data together, which eventually gets aggregated to provide novel services to the community. Papers whose contributions overlap with an earlier published paper will be considered only if (1) the previous paper was published (not just accepted) at a workshop at least 6 months before our submission date and (2) it adds significant new contributions over the previous paper. Authors uncertain whether their submission meets these guidelines should contact the program chairs. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms will not be considered. Accepted submissions will be treated as confidential prior to publication; rejected submissions will be permanently treated as confidential. MobiSys will use a double-blind review policy during the initial paper review. Authors are instructed to not include their names, affiliations and contact information on the manuscript they submit for review. Authors should also anonymize the content of their paper to hide their identity. Reviewers will not know the identity of the authors during the initial phase of the review process, however, anonymity will expire after the majority of the reviews have been submitted and preliminary outcomes decided. On the other hand, application designers and end users need to know how to get their needed level of reliability and they have to take into account the specifics of the technology. The aim of this workshop is to shed light on the main challenges and solutions for Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) based on LoRa or similar technologies. We solicit contributions in this area from researchers and practitioners in both the academia and industry. MaDeLoRa aims at bringing together various researchers and research groups working with problems related to multi-rate LPWAN technologies both from the applied and the theoretical point of view. TOPICS OF INTEREST The workshop welcomes submissions describing unpublished research, position papers as well as deployment experiences on various topics related to LoRa and deployment of LoRaWAN. Moreover, in recent years, the world has seen many major breakthroughs in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) research. By integrating the advances in smart devices and edge systems with the advances in machine learning, the future role of smart edge systems, networks, and applications is becoming limitless and it's expected to revolutionize the future of the world within the next few years. This is especially important as edge systems generate ever-growing and evolving collections of data, calling for dedicated ML/AI techniques capable of handling streaming and lifelong learning problems. SmartEdge'20 aims at bringing together experts from several research communities spanning pervasive & mobile computing, wireless networks, embedded systems, Internet of Things, machine learning, big data, and data analytics to discuss data needs and interests, challenges to be addressed, tools to be developed, and new research problems on edge wireless infrastructure, edge mobile systems, rich data sets accessed or generated by edge and Internet of Things devices.
