The application designers and end users need to know how to get their needed level of reliability and they have to take into account the specifics of the technology. The aim of this workshop is to shed the light on the main challenges and solutions of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) based on LoRa technology. We solicit contributions in this area from researchers and practitioners in both the academia and industry. MaDeLoRa aims at bringing together various researchers and research groups working with problems related to the LoRa technology both from the applied and the theoretical point of view. TOPICS OF INTEREST The workshop welcomes submissions describing unpublished research, position papers as well as deployment experiences on various topics related to LoRa and deployment of LoRaWAN. Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to: Single and Multi-Gateway LoRaWAN deployment Performance evaluation PHY enhancements Range and coverage Error control and correction MAC layer protocols for LoRa technology Traffic models for massive network deployment Capacity evaluation Scalability Reliability Analyzing LoRa: a Use Case Perspective IoT Applications in LoRaWAN Simulation of LoRaWAN Cross-layer design and optimization Accepted and presented papers will be included in the EWSN 2020 proceedings and will appear in the ACM Digital Library. All papers will be reviewed by Technical Program Committee members and selected papers will be organized for presentation at the workshop. Conf. on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) February 17-19, 2020 - Lyon, France http://ewsn2020.conf.citi-lab.fr/competition.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Following the success of the previous four editions, the International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks will host also this year a dependability competition to benchmark the performance of state-of-the-art low-power wireless protocols under the same settings and in harsh RF environments. ******** SCENARIO AND CATEGORIES ******** The competition scenario will emulate the operation of a wireless sensor network where several co-existing devices are crowding the RF spectrum. In particular, the messages generated by several source nodes need to be collected at a single destination in a reliable, timely, and energy-efficient way despite the presence of interference. In contrast to the previous editions, this year's competition will make use of nRF52840-DK wireless nodes. Contestants are free to use any of the technologies and physical modes supported by this platform. Two categories are planned for this year's edition: 1) Single-hop data collection. In this category, up to 20 source nodes generate raw sensor values of different length, which should be sent to the same destination. The latter is located in proximity of all source nodes and can be reached directly, i.e., in normal conditions, the sink can be reached by every source node within a single hop. 2) Multi-hop data collection. In this category, up to 60 source nodes generate raw sensor values of different length, which should be sent to the same destination. The latter may be located several hops away from a source node, even when making use of the coded PHY layers available on the nRF52. Contestants willing to participate to the competition must submit a short entry abstract describing their solution by the competition entry deadline. The entry abstracts will be used to pre-select the teams participating to the competition. Accepted contestants will participate to a remote preparation phase during which they can test and optimize their solution on the competition infrastructure. At the end of this phase, all contestants will be asked to provide a single binary file for the final evaluation phase. Each competing team will have the possibility to publish a competition abstract as part of the EWSN proceedings that will appear in the ACM Digital Library. Furthermore, a poster session dedicated to the dependability competition will take place during the main conference. The winners of each competition's category will be awarded during a dedicated plenary session of the main conference and will be able to hold a plenary short presentation about their solution. ******** ELIGIBILITY ******** Both academia and industry submissions are encouraged. Any low-power wireless protocol is eligible and there is no restriction on the operating system used to program the sensor nodes, nor on the wireless technology used. The communication in ICN is mainly based on the content name instead of using host addresses. Hence, the content is decoupled from its original location and may be cached in the network infrastructure. Also, the use of content-based security makes ICN a strong candidate for the future Internet, to fulfill user requirements, improve the content distribution, and the overall network performance. Under the concept of ICN, various architectures have been implemented such as Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking (NDN). On the other hand, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology is being widely applied to diverse domain-applications including smart cities, smart homes, smart healthcare, smart grids, and smart transportation. Things in the IoT ecosystem can collect data, interconnect between each other and the Internet, processing and taking decisions without human interaction. IoT communications and applications are, in nature, information-based and follow content-oriented paradigm. Hence, ICN may show promising performance on IoT, and help to overcome different IoT challenges and application requirement including addressing, heterogeneity, mobility, security, and scalability. As the relevant environments grow increasingly diverse and dense, we encourage contributions addressing this increased heterogeneity, and ultra dense networks. Papers highlighting novel ideas that are not ready for extensive evaluations, report on new tools and platforms with limited evaluation, or topics that could be adequately described in a short format are invited for submission as short papers. Initial explorations of profound problems in developing countries that have been addressed using IoT solutions may also be appropriate short paper submissions. The conference proceedings will appear in the ACM Digital Library. The Series profoundly explores the concept of IoT and sensor networks, highlights the recent activities and achievements therein, as well as provides insights into the theoretical and practical matters related to breakthroughs in this field from different perspectives. However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service. In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to manage the resources effectively. More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall quality of service. The communication in ICN is mainly based on the content name instead of using host addresses. Hence, the content is decoupled from its original location and may be cached in the network infrastructure. Also, the use of content-based security makes ICN a strong candidate for the future Internet, to fulfill user requirements, improve the content distribution, and the overall network performance. Under the concept of ICN, various architectures have been implemented such as Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking (NDN). On the other hand, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology is being widely applied to diverse domain-applications including smart cities, smart homes, smart healthcare, smart grids, and smart transportation. Things in the IoT ecosystem can collect data, interconnect between each other and the Internet, processing and taking decisions without human interaction. IoT communications and applications are, in nature, information-based and follow content-oriented paradigm. Hence, ICN may show promising performance on IoT, and help to overcome different IoT challenges and application requirement including addressing, heterogeneity, mobility, security, and scalability. Scope and Motivation In modern communication networks, different technologies need to cooperate with each other for end-to-end quality of service (QoS) provisioning in a wide range of multimedia applications with a huge number of customers represented not only by humans, but more and more by things and robots interconnected to each other and to data centers. The Communication QoS, Reliability and Modeling (CQRM) Symposium aims at providing an international venue for the discussion of research advances in communications service provisioning, quality of service/experience technologies, and analytical and experimental techniques to allow the design of communication networks as a reliable information infrastructure with QoS capability. The scope of this symposium is agnostic to network technologies. Specifically, the goal is to address the key challenges to provide the required level of QoS, security and reliability to coexisting networks that are heterogeneous in nature, in size, and in the type of information transmitted. Mobile and social sensing is becoming a paradigm for collecting observations of the physical phenomena, either directly from human observers, or by means of crowd-sourcing the data measurement tasks using sensors in the smart phones or various other wearables (e.g., Google Glass, Apple Watch, and Fitbit devices). It thus involves massive amount of sensory data collection and/or dissemination where humans can act as sensor carriers (e.g., carrying GPS sensors that share location data), sensor operators (e.g., taking pictures and videos with smart phones), or as sensors themselves (e.g., sharing their observations on social media). By offering a wide variety of infotainment services, fleet operations, and in-vehicle applications, IoCV has gained the tremendous capacity to provide a safer and sustainable transportation system to the society. According to Gartner Inc., “the connected car is already a reality, and in-vehicle wireless connectivity is expanding rapidly”. As a result, the evolution of cars into the IoT will keep on accelerating the global market which is expected to grow by 270 percent by 2022. Further, the increasing deployment of sensors and ever-evolving cognitive technology open up new opportunities for IoCV. Due to these significant developments, connected vehicles are receiving widespread attention from the major automotive giants such as Tesla, BMW, Waymo (Google), Uber, Volvo, etc. Despite all the opportunities offered by the IoCV, their highly dynamic topology and the increasing number of vehicles pose challenges regarding delivering low-latency vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. The fifth generation (5G) wireless networks emerge as a critical provider to handle the stringent connectivity requirements of IoCV. Moreover, with the development of massive multiple-input- multiple-output (MIMO), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), terahertz (THz) frequencies, millimetre-wave (mmWave), and heterogeneous networks (HetNets), 5G intends to guarantee new capabilities related to connectivity, data rates, transmission delay, throughput and moreover quality of experience (QoE). Thus, integrating 5G cellular systems into IoCV is a promising technology to achieve the goals mentioned above. However, as we are moving towards the 5G communication era, the data generated by connected vehicles is expected to grow exponentially; which in turn brings significant challenges to 5G. Therefore, to promote productivity, improve efficiency, and ensure the efficient handling of continuous growing data, it requires the support of high computing paradigm that can process the data with minimum delays. To accomplish these objectives, a programmable and scalable network paradigm is the need of the hour that can provide a variety of services to 5G-envisioned IoCV in diversified scenarios. In this direction, software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) have gained much attention from the research fraternity. They rely more on network programmability to realize efficient network services. However, this traditional device-to-device management paradigm falls short while dealing with 5G mobile networks as it is characterized by a humongous cycle of connected devices. To overcome these problems, intent-based networking (IBN) has evolved as one of the paradigm shifts which combines automation with intelligence. Typically, IBN is composed of four essential elements namely, translation and validation, automated implementation, awareness of network state, and assurance and dynamic optimization/remediation; which takes the networking strategy to a higher level. Due to these fundamental elements, IBN holds excellent potential for reliable network support with quick turnaround and scalable services. Additionally, it also facilitates simplified network operations with seamless integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning. This, in turn, provides more opportunities to build more robust and efficient network designs for 5G-envisioned IoCV. Hence, new paradigms are emerging, significantly changing the landscape of industrial automation systems and networks. In the computational realm, edge/fog computing is gaining popularity to leverage the enhanced capabilities of end devices, and at the same time, the interest in virtualization techniques is steadily increasing, with the aim of increasing the quality, timeliness and reliability of time-critical tasks. The communication in ICN is mainly based on the content name instead of using host addresses. Hence, the content is decoupled from its original location and may be cached in the network infrastructure. Also, the use of content-based security makes ICN a strong candidate for the future Internet, to fulfill user requirements, improve the content distribution, and the overall network performance. Under the concept of ICN, various architectures have been implemented such as Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking (NDN). On the other hand, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology is being widely applied to diverse domain-applications including smart cities, smart homes, smart healthcare, smart grids, and smart transportation. Things in the IoT ecosystem can collect data, interconnect between each other and the Internet, processing and taking decisions without human interaction. IoT communications and applications are, in nature, information-based and follow content-oriented paradigm. Hence, ICN may show promising performance on IoT, and help to overcome different IoT challenges and application requirement including addressing, heterogeneity, mobility, security, and scalability. Potential topics include but not limited to the following: • Advances architecture and application design for ICN-IoT. • Standardized and unified content naming schemes. • Energy and resource efficiency forwarding scheme. • Distributed in-network caching placement strategies. • Efficient cache replacement policies. • Forwarding/caching in resource-constrained IoT devices. • Secure pub-sub communication among IoT applications. • Novel QoS provisioning for CCN/NDN architecture. • Privacy, security, and trust for IoT applications. • Resource constraints access control policies for IoT. • Enable ICN communication for 5G-IoT networks. • Lightweight cryptography algorithms for ICN-IoT networks. • Experimental prototypes and test-bed for CCN/NDN in IoT. • Analysis and evaluation of running CCN/NDN in large scale IoT networks. • Business models of applying ICN in real IoT environment. Connected autonomous-driving vehicles come with high communication capabilities and various degrees of autonomy to resolve unlimited number of transportation issues (e.g., traffic congestion, accidents and safety), cope with the evolution of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and offer a new concept of service on-demand delivery. As most vehicle drivers see these technologies unsafe and unreliable, around 1.2 million people are killed every year due to drivers’ errors in car accidents. Therefore, these technologies are envisioned to make these smart vehicles dominate the roads by 2030 creating substantial economic benefits manifested in the form of safer roads, significantly reduced congestions, improved equity and accessibility to transportation, offer a new service delivery concept (driverless and self-driving vehicle or on-demand service vehicle). Employing advanced technologies and tools, such as, 5G, blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (i.e. Machine Learning (ML), Reinforcement Learning, and Deep Learning (DL)), crowdsensing, crowd management, to name a few, in delay-sensitive data-processing applications (e.g., autonomous vehicles) deems imperative for making informed and instant decisions without human interference. Thus, only those who adopt these machinery advancements can successfully compete in this changing ecosystem. The aim of this special issue is motivating researchers from academia, industry, and individuals to investigate the future of connected and autonomous vehicles leveraging the use of advanced technologies and submit their novel contributions to this special issue. The special issue covers topics that include, but not limited to, the below: · The future of connected and autonomous vehicles. · AI/ML/DL models and capabilities for connected and autonomous vehicles. · Big data analysis in connected and autonomous vehicles. · Analytics platforms using AI methodologies for on-board vehicle sensing. · IoT-driven sensing-solutions for connected and autonomous vehicles. · Security and privacy of connected and autonomous vehicles. · Cyber-physical system of connected and autonomous vehicles. · Exploring computation at the edge of connected and autonomous vehicles. · Development and deployment of architectures for connected and autonomous vehicles. · Performance design, modeling and evaluation of connected and autonomous vehicles. · Blockchain for connected and autonomous vehicles. · 5G technologies enabling connected and autonomous vehicles. · Congestion Mitigation in vehicular dense crowded environment. *Coherent list of topics: * Papers must be tailored to the emerging fields of connected and autonomous vehicles employing and explicitly consider recent advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence novel tools and techniques. SCOPE The International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) is a highly selective single-track international conference focusing on the latest research results on embedded systems and wireless networking, key enablers for visionary scenarios such as the Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems. After last year’s positive experience in China, the 17th edition returns to Europe in Lyon, France. The conference continues its aim for broad, world-wide impact. TOPICS OF INTEREST The conference solicits both full technical papers and short papers describing validated early ideas. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Communication and networking for wireless and embedded systems - Sensing, actuation, and control - Operating systems, middleware, and services - Processing, storage, and management of data - Programming paradigms, languages, and tools - Time and location management - Dependability (real-time, reliability, availability, safety) - Privacy and security in applications and systems - Human-machine interaction with wireless and embedded systems - Design and implementation of real-world applications and systems - Measurement studies and deployment experiences - Green IoT (low-power, harvesting, energy management) - Challenges of ultra dense networks - Heterogeneous networks - Applications and problems from developing countries and emerging markets As always, contributions are welcome across the entire scope of the conference. As the relevant environments grow increasingly diverse and dense, we encourage contributions addressing this increased heterogeneity, and ultra dense networks. Papers highlighting novel ideas that are not ready for extensive evaluations, report on new tools and platforms with limited evaluation, or topics that could be adequately described in a short format are invited for submission as short papers. Initial explorations of profound problems in developing countries that have been addressed using IoT solutions may also be appropriate short paper submissions. The conference proceedings will appear in the ACM Digital Library. Selected accepted papers will be fast-tracked to ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks (TOSN) or ACM Transactions on the Internet of Things (TIOT). SUBMISSION Submissions to EWSN 2020 must be original (i.e., not previously published) and not currently under review by any other conference or journal. EWSN 2020 will adopt a double-blind review process. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions to ensure that their identities are not disclosed to reviewers and reviewers are discouraged from actively working to uncover author identities. To promote early dissemination, submission to arXiv (or similar) is allowed, provided cross-citations are not made. Formatting requirements. Both full (10-12 pages) and short papers (4-6 pages) are welcome. Authors should carefully consider this choice as full papers will not be considered as short paper candidates during the review phase. Pages must use 8.5" x 11" (letter) two-column format, using 10-point type on 11-point leading, with a maximum text block of 7" wide x 9" deep with an inter-column spacing of .25".
