Different types of relationships exist among things, thus forming social connections such as parental-object relationship, co-work-object relationship, co-location-object relationship, ownership-object relationship, and so on. The definition of Internet of Vehicles (IoV) applies to an interconnected set of vehicles providing information for common services such as traffic management and road safety. The Social IoV (SIoV) is an extension to the concept of IoV, where the social networking concepts of SioT are applied to IoV. In SIoV, smart vehicles build social relationships with other social objects they might come into contact, including other vehicles and Road Side Units, with the intent of creating an overlay social network to be exploited for information search and dissemination for vehicular applications. In SIoV scenario, several challenges are worth to be investigated. SIoV paradigm is still in its infancy but there is a concrete interest by the research community, automotive industry and social application providers to develop SIoV applications. Significant progress has been made through contributions in areas as diverse as embedded and real-time systems, robotics and control, wireless communication and networking, signal processing, and machine learning. Despite these advances, it is difficult to measure and compare the utility of these results due to a lack of standard evaluation criteria and methodologies. This problem concerns the evaluation against the state of the art in an individual area, the comparability of different integrated designs that span multiple areas (e.g., control and networking), and the applicability of tested scenarios to the present and future real-world cyber-physical applications and deployments. This state of affairs is alarming as it may significantly hinder further progress in cyber-physical networks and systems research. The Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Networks and Systems (CPSBench) brings together researchers from the different sub-communities to engage in a lively debate on all facets of rigorously evaluating and comparing cyber-physical networks and systems. CPSBench provides a venue for learning about each other’s challenges and evaluation methodologies and for debating future research agendas to jointly define the performance metrics and benchmarking scenarios that matter from an overall system’s perspective. We invite researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to submit short position papers. We particularly encourage submissions that focus on one of the following: - identify fundamental challenges and open questions in rigorous benchmarking and evaluation of cyber-physical networks and systems; - offer a constructive critique on the current practice and state of experimental comparison; - report on success stories or failures with using standard evaluation criteria; - present example benchmark systems and approaches from any of the relevant communities (embedded systems, networking, control, robotics, machine learning, etc.); - propose new research directions, methodologies, or tools to increase the level of reproducibility and comparability of evaluation results. Well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations are sufficient to support a paper’s claims. Accepted papers will be published as part of the CPSWEEK proceedings. Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their work at the workshop. To address the individual requirements of both safety and non-safety applications in the Connected and Smart Vehicles field, there is a need to build up a new communication technology for the integrated solutions of vehicular communication and smart communications. The Connected Vehicles infrastructure can be of various models such as Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2E). Due to the rapid growth in the Connected Vehicles, many research constraints need to be addressed, e.g., reliability and latency, appropriate scalable design of MAC and routing protocols, performance and adaptability to the changes in environment (node density and oscillation in network topology), and evaluation and validation of Connected Vehicles’ protocols under the umbrella of coherent assumptions using simulation methodologies. In addition, the information shared among Connected Vehicles is of great importance and it is not yet clear what kind of privacy policies will be defined for the ITS networks. This Feature Topic (FT) aims to emphasize the latest achievements to identify those aspects of Connected Vehicles and ITS networks that are identical to a traditional communications network in the broader spectrum. Feature Topic Focus: In this FT, we would like to try to answer some (or all) of the following questions: What will be the effect on Policy Making regulations when the connected vehicles will hit the roads? What are the privacy consequences of Connected Vehicles with Smart onboard peripherals? What kind of privacy policies will be defined for the connected vehicles and smart ITS networks? What kind of education and training are required for drivers and passengers of such connected and smart vehicles to take full benefits of the proposed communication architectures? All papers for IEEE SECON 2018 must be submitted via the conference submission page. Each submission must be no longer than 9 pages and in font size no smaller than 10 points. Submissions that violate the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality and relevance through *double-blind* reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. As an author, you are required to preserve the anonymity of your submission, while at the same time allowing the reader to fully grasp the context of related past work, including your own. Common sense and careful writing will go a long way towards preserving anonymity. Papers that do not conform to our double-blind submission policies will be rejected without review. To be published in the IEEE SECON 2018 Conference Proceedings and to be eligible for publication in IEEE Xplore®, one author of each accepted paper is required to register for the conference at the full (member or non-member) rate and the paper must be presented by an author of that paper at the conference, unless the TPC Chairs grant permission for a substitute presenter arranged in advance of the event who is qualified to both present the paper and answer questions. In particular, such a structure focuses on the intersection between the physical process and computation, where the former provides a feedback loop to the computational side, and vice versa. This kind of systems are often identified with the term Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). To support this framework, the underlying communication infrastructure is required to provide definite and trustworthy performance, strong reliability and bounded latencies, while supporting self- healing and flexible network deployment. It is collectively recognized that high–performance wireless protocols will represent a breakthrough in future CPS, enabling the exploitation of an ad–hoc, rapid and adaptive connectivity while ensuring the required performance. Unfortunately, wireless communications are prone to disturbances and external interferences, and are often affected by non-negligible packet loss rates, random delays and jitter. Indeed, their actual low penetration in industry-grade control scenarios is mostly due to these long-existing challenges to meet the specific time-critical applications’ constraints reliably. A broad range of high–performance applications may benefit from the adoption of time–critical wireless communications, such as: industrial control and factory automation systems, mobile and cooperative robotics (e.g. robotic manipulation, vision), coordination and control of mobile computing agents (e.g. smart drones). In all these applications, the underlying communication network has to be able to steadily sustain a high sampling rate of the physical environment, a requirement that current wireless systems might not be able to meet. In the context of this special issue, several research areas reveals of paramount interest. Interoperability among heterogeneous systems and cost issues push toward the adoption of widespread commercial wireless solutions, such as IEEE 802.11-based ones, which are not specifically designed to support time-critical control applications. Efforts are hence imperative to dramatically enhance the communication performance of wireless systems in order to boost the actual sampling times in critical scenarios. This entails the design and exploitation of new protocols, architectures and algorithms to enable cooperation and control over wireless lossy channels. The development of effective real–time scheduling techniques are also envisaged for an efficient traffic management. Moreover, fields like coordination and vision over wireless are significantly impacted by these types of networks, and activities are required in this field to match the required and the available performance. The main aim of this special issue is to attract high-quality research papers addressing the most recent advances in all the highlighted fields. Also, we encourage submissions of survey papers summarizing the state of the art in any of the related research areas. Currently, operators are striving to reduce the investment and maintenance costs for cellular systems. In this context, caching has been proposed as a technique that has the potential to reduce backhaul network traffic and improve content latency for the wireless user. Especially in 5G, caching is poised as one of the most promising new technologies. The "Content Caching and Delivery in Wireless Networks" (CCDWN) workshop focuses on techniques that aim to achieve efficient content delivery to the end user in order to meet the stringent quality requirements of 5G wireless. The idea is to bring together experts in the field and discuss ways in which content caching, sharing and prefetching can play a leading role in future wireless networks. Indicative research topics of high interest include but are not limited to: - Caching architectures e.g. Femto-Caching - Memory management, content prefetching and recommendation - Content placement, replication and delivery - Big Data Caching Analytics and Machine Learning - Caching in the datacentre - Coded Caching and related Information Theory aspects - 5G and Caching (IoT, D2D, edge computing) - Network economics caching issues - Interplay of Caching with wireless communications (PHY and MAC) - Green Caching - Content Delivery Networks and ICN - Stochastic cache models, scaling laws - Distributed and adaptive algorithms in CDNs/ICNs This workshop aims to bring together people from different communities, including networking, communications, computer science, operation research, machine learning, and information theory to shed light on the latest developments in the field. To maximize interaction and visibility, CCDWN ‘18 will be co-located with WiOpt 2018 and will take place on May 7 or 11, 2018, in Shanghai, China. The workshop is considered an integral part of the WiOpt 2018 symposium. All CCDWN papers will be published in the same set of proceedings as the main conference and will be made available on the IEEE Xplore. Publication at this workshop is not intended to preclude later publication of an extended version of the paper. Work in Progress papers Work-in-progress papers provide a peer-reviewed forum for late-breaking or preliminary research results, giving an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to present and demonstrate their recent research, and to obtain feedback from their peers in an informal setting. The ever-increasing volume of data traffic and the proliferation of services with stringent performance requirements constantly outpace the capacity upgrades in wired and wireless networks, and challenge their performance and their economic viability. At the same time, recent developments, such as the advent of SDN and NFV technologies, the deployment of multi-tier wireless systems, and the novel interplay of caching with physical layer techniques can create novel opportunities for reducing this demand-supply gap. In this new era, it is imperative to systematically revisit the role of caching for a variety of reasons: (i) storage becomes an increasingly low-cost resource, in stark contrast with other resources (e.g., spectrum), and can be embedded in equipment of various form factors in large amounts; (ii) novel network architectures emerge such as 5G+ systems and hybrid wired-wireless designs; (iii) new business models appear with Over-The-Top service providers deploying their own infrastructure or cooperating with network operators; (iv) the needs of users are rapidly changing, consuming huge amounts of content on their mobile devices and generating their own content; (v) social networking platforms are heavily affecting network operation creating additional value but also congestion. Storage and caching can play a fundamental role in this emerging era in communication systems and networks, by increasing the performance of the offered services, reducing operating and capital expenditures, and enabling innovative and game-changing business models. This special issue therefore invites submissions of high-quality original technical and survey papers exploring the role of caching in communication systems and networks, including the following non-exhaustive list of topics: Information-theoretic caching analysis: (i) Fundamental limits of caching; (ii) Coded caching design with practical constraints; (iii) Receiver and source memory-enhanced communications; (iv) Scaling laws of cache networks. Caching in next generation wireless systems: (i) HetNet and device-to-device caching; (ii) Edge caching, cooperation and femtocaching; (iii) Joint caching with scheduling, routing and utility maximisation; (iv) Secure caching, privacy preservation. Content caching and delivery: (i) Design of elastic CDNs; (ii) Algorithms for storage and content placement; (iii) Novel aspects of video caching and streaming; (iv) Caching economics; (v) Caching models for ICN. In cloud-centric IoT applications, the sensor data from these “things” is extracted, accumulated and processed at the public/private clouds, leading to significant latencies. To satisfy the ever increasing demand for Cloud Computing resources from emerging applications such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), academics and industry experts are now advocating for going from large-centralized Cloud Computing infrastructures to micro data centres located at the edge of the network. These micro data centres are often closer to a user (geographically and in access latency) compared to the centralized cloud data centre. The aim of utilizing such edge resources is to off load computation that would have “traditionally” been carried out at the cloud data centre to a resource that is closer to a user or edge devices. This vision also acknowledges the variation in network latency from an end user to cloud data centre. Whereas the network around a data centre is often high capacity and speed, that near the user device may have variably properties (in terms of resilience, bandwidth, latency, etc). Referred to as “fog/edge computing”, this paradigm is expected to improve the agility of cloud service deployments in addition to bringing computing resources closer to end-users. On the one hand, the development of Fog and Edge clouds includes dedicated facilities, operating system, network and middleware techniques to build and operate such micro data centres that host virtualized computing resources. On the other hand, the uses of Fog and Edge clouds requires extension to current programming models and propose new abstractions that will allow developers to design new applications that take benefit from such massively distributed systems. The use of this approach also opens up other challenges in: security and privacy (as a user now needs to “trust” every micro data centre they interact with), support for resource management for mobile users who transfer session from one micro data centre to another, support for “embedding” such micro data centres into devices (e.g. cars, buildings, etc.) The conference seeks to attract contributions covering both theory and practice of any of the aforementioned challenges, from the management software stack to domain-specific applications. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, collaborative objects, the Internet of Things, machine learning, mobile and social sensing, and embedded systems design. Of special interest are contributions at the confluence of multiple of these areas. At the same time, recent developments, such as the advent of SDN and NFV technologies, the deployment of multi-tier wireless systems, and the novel interplay of caching with physical layer techniques can create novel opportunities for reducing this demand-supply gap. In this new era, it is imperative to systematically revisit the role of caching for a variety of reasons: (i) storage becomes an increasingly low-cost resource, in stark contrast with other resources (e.g., spectrum), and can be embedded in equipment of various form factors in large amounts; (ii) novel network architectures emerge such as 5G+ systems and hybrid wired-wireless designs; (iii) new business models appear with Over-The-Top service providers deploying their own infrastructure or cooperating with network operators; (iv) the needs of users are rapidly changing, consuming huge amounts of content on their mobile devices and generating their own content; (v) social networking platforms are heavily affecting network operation creating additional value but also congestion. Storage and caching can play a fundamental role in this emerging era in communication systems and networks, by increasing the performance of the offered services, reducing operating and capital expenditures, and enabling innovative and game-changing business models. This special issue therefore invites submissions of high-quality original technical and survey papers exploring the role of caching in communication systems and networks, including the following non-exhaustive list of topics: Information-theoretic caching analysis: (i) Fundamental limits of caching; (ii) Coded caching design with practical constraints; (iii) Receiver and source memory-enhanced communications; (iv) Scaling laws of cache networks. Pervasive computing enables computers to interact with the real world in a ubiquitous and natural manner. Quality of service (QoS), related to transmission delay, bandwidth, or packet loss, has been studied in various building blocks in pervasive computing, e.g., different QoS mechanisms are presented for wireless or wired networks; the notion of computational QoS is used for parallel processing. The emerging pervasive computing paradigm, however, is application-driven and mission-critical and the existing QoS notions to do not really match. Quality of Information (QoI) or Information Quality (IQ) of sensor-originated information relates to the fitness of the information for a sensor-enabled application. Harnessing and optimizing QoI of information derived from sensor networks will be key to bringing together information acquisition and processing systems that support the on-demand information needs of a broad spectrum of smart, sensor-enabled applications such as remote real-time habitat monitoring, utility grid monitoring, environmental control, supply-chain management, health care, machinery control, intelligent highways, military intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR), border control, and hazardous material monitoring, just to mention a few. The proliferation of smartphone has also enabled the possibility to retrieve data also by users on the move. This data collection paradigm is often called crowdsensing, or crowdsourcing, and builds upon the willingness of users to share data together, which eventually gets aggregated to provide novel services to the community. Although fascinating, and potentially disruptive, this paradigm inherently carries a set of technical challenges, at various levels and which should be studied by different research communities. At first, to make the data granularity spread enough, the crowd should be sufficiently large. This means that the application which runs on the users’ device has to be optimized, and should not interfere with the normal activity the users want to perform. This raises the challenge of having smart interfaces which communicate with the user only when necessary, along with the battery efficiency, which plays a crucial role being these devices almost always battery powered. Another technical challenge comes from the heterogeneous data aggregation, as data can be in many different shapes, formats, and labeled in different languages. Hence, automatically linking data that comes from different platforms becomes challenging, and again clustering techniques, supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms have to be developed to perform such task efficiently. Achieving the desired “pervasiveness” of mobile applications, which in turns enable to retrieve data for the community, and the assessment of the QoI itself is key. The objective of this workshop (which is unique venue in its scope for the pervasive community) is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of QoI, QoE, QoS for pervasive computing and crowdsensing in network contexts including wireless, mobile and sensor networks. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of QoI and QoE provisioning in pervasive computing and mobile crowdsensing are solicited. Papers describing experience on real prototype implementations are particularly welcome. VANET is a kind of ITS networks where a vehicle is a connected car equipped with various communications technologies such as: Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and cellular networks (3G/4G). The purpose of VANET is to ensure a wide area coverage for all vehicles in scaling the network, thus achieving the always best connected paradigm where the best connectivity is offered to clients wherever they are and at any time. UAV is another kind of aerial ITS networks, which are used in military applications for target monitoring and engaging air to ground combats. It is also used in civil applications to explore inaccessible areas and deliver data to and from areas with no network infrastructure. There are many unprecedented challenges to realize ITS network; security and privacy is one of them since, on one hand, vehicles exchange sensitive data (e.g., accidents notification, coordinates of nuclear sites, etc.) and on the other hand they form a specific network with particular characteristics (frequent fragmentation and dynamic topology). This special issue covers studies and solutions that ensure ITS security and privacy. We encourage authors from the industry and academe to submit their original research works that will enhance our understanding and modeling of security, privacy, and attacks. With the explosion of things (expected to be 50 billion devices by 2020), cloud computing is challenged in meeting the data processing and computational demands of IoT applications. An emerging approach is to move computation, data, and control from cloud to the edge of the network commonly referred to as Fog/Mobile Edge (FME). The FME enables IoT applications to meet their latency/delay requirements, improve scalability and energy efficiency of IoT devices, and provide the means for contextual information processing, as well as mitigating the bandwidth burdens of the network. FME provides immense opportunities and capabilities such as geographical distribution, geolocation awareness and device context, support for mobility of devices and access to multitude of network interfaces (from 4G and 5G to Wi-Fi). Such features help satisfy the real-time processing requirements of IoT applications such as flood monitoring, disaster detection and management (e.g., earthquakes), and patient care. However, the massive mobility of IoT edge devices, heterogeneity in communication interfaces, new and emerging communication architectures (e.g., LTE, 5G), emerging network technologies (e.g., SDN, NFV), security and privacy concerns, processing capabilities/limitation of FME servers, and IoT Big Data demand new methods, architectures, and applications in order to realize the full potential of FME for IoT applications. This special issue encourages high quality submissions related to the provision and development of real-time analytics-based IoT applications that exploit the capabilities offered by Fog/Mobile Edge computing. In particular, it aims to examine the prospects and challenges that arise in developing novel Fog/Mobile Edge computing architectures and applications that can address the challenges highlighted earlier. The evolution of Internet-of-things (IoT) paradigm not only comes with challenges to the research and industrial communities on finding efficient solutions for massive connectivity, but also poses a profound opportunity to reshape the current IoT architectures by exploring the inherent nature of the huge number of smart devices with caching, communications, computing and security capabilities. Smart IoT cannot be simply regarded as an upgrade of current IoT by just adding to or replacing sensors/actuators/RFID tags in smart devices. It should be redesigned from the physical layer to the application layer in a bottom-up way. In the context of smart IoT, communication is essential to guarantee end-to-end connectivity. Together with communications technology, other features, such as caching, computing and security should be fully utilized to complement the current study of IoT. The resulting new structure, by utilizing these inherent features, may have a wider application over current infrastructure-based cellular networks and traditional sensor-based networks by adopting all these features. However, new features also create unexpected problems which can not be directly addressed through the traditional approaches designed for low-rate IoT systems. Thus, how to effectively utilize existing capabilities to address the fundamental challenges in smart IoT remains challenging. Despite the evolution of IoT, some fundamental problems are still open and require immediate investigation. This Feature Topic (FT) aims at providing timely and comprehensive overviews of the current state-of-the art in terms of fundamental theoretical innovations and technological advances towards exploiting smart caching, communications, computing and cybersecurity for smart IoT networks. Topics include, but are not limited to: Smart mobile computing, edge computing, cloud computing for IoT Smart content caching, pushing, and distribution for IoT Advances in technology and architecture for smart IoT Smart data collection, sensing, caching, processing, aggregation, communication, and analysis for IoT Software-defined solutions and network functions virtualization for IoT Efficient resource allocation, QoS, and QoE of IoT Novel authentication, access control and intrusion detection for smart IoT Novel cryptography algorithms for content privacy for IoT Experimental results, prototypes and testbed of IoT Energy efficiency and energy harvesting in IoT Emerging IoT applications in 5G networks such as ITS, CPS, smart grid, smart city, smart health, etc. Standardization of caching, communications, computing and security of IoT.
