The huge demand for high quality life makes the administrator and the governments to put carefully planning in cities in a smarter way. As a premier agent for stimulating a quality of life compatible with a resource efficient economy, the smart city phenomenon has recently seized the imagination of the academia and the industry significantly. As the Internet of things (IoT) and Tactile Internet are predictable to be a primary driving force for future cities, advanced communication methods will play a crucial role in assisting real-time data acquisition and utilization from distributed sensors. However, smart cities will also have to function within the limitations of the national economy and available resources. Consequently, the challenges in the realization of smart cities are many and varied. In general, low energy consumption, constrained bandwidth, latency and budgetary limitations are predominate. In order to overcome these hurdles, it is essential that new ideas and theories for optimizing the network in energy, spectral, latency and monetary terms are presented to achieve a robust environment monitoring and sustainable transportation network, among other provisions. This led the researchers to pave the way for future wireless networks under the umbrella of 5G communications as well. This is an amalgamation of a multitude of technologies ranging from device-level algorithms such as low power transmissions to system-level architectures such as software-defined networking (SDN), the challenges posed by each of these techniques are critical. The smart city idea is also known to work at the intersection of various techniques such as device-to-device (D2D) communications, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, full-duplex transmissions and Internet of Things (IoT) to name a few. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a group of experts with interest in emerging smart cities related areas. The recent advancement in smart cities has boosted the development of a new generation of highly-efficient mobile networks. After the successful editions of this workshop in IEEE ISWCS 2016 and IEEE PIMRC 2017, this workshop will highlight the recent developments in this evolving area. It will provide a platform for exchanging new ideas and research collaboration. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. This workshop builds on the success of the twelve previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ________________________________________ General Paper Format: Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages, and should adhere to the standard ACM conference proceedings format. Authors must register the abstract 1 week prior to the full paper submission. Demo/Poster Format: Demo and poster proposals will be published as part of the proceedings and must not be longer than 2 pages. For demos, an additional page must describe the precise setup and requirements (the 1-page setup description will not be published in the proceedings). Submission: Reviews will be single-blinded. Papers should neither have been published elsewhere nor being currently under review by another conference or journal. Advances in the effective integration of networked sensors, building controls, and physical infrastructure are transforming our society. In the information age, unprecedented research of cyber-physical infrastructures includes the acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data such as sensors, devices, vehicles, buildings, and human, to tackle the major issues that cities face, e.g., air pollution, increased energy consumption and traffic congestion. Systems optimization, data analysis and modeling applied to the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g., by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s quality-of-life. These systems represent the foundation for emerging “smart cities”. The 5th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2018) will be held November 7-8, 2018 at Shenzhen, China. This year at least five best papers in the ACM BuildSys proceedings will be selected into the ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks with minor revision, upon authors' agreement. BuildSys is the premier conference for researchers and practitioners working to develop and optimize smart infrastructure systems that are driven by sophisticated sensing, computing, and control functions. We invite original contributions including, but not limited to the following: * Applications in smart and connected communities; * Sensing and control for urban infrastructure systems; * Novel sensor methodologies, techniques, and tools; * Sensing and control of electrical, gas, and water loads; * Improved user interfaces to built infrastructure; * Modeling, simulation, optimization, and control of heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, water usage and other resource flows in built environments; * Sensor systems and applications that enhance energy efficiency, energy reliability, durability, and comfort; * Systems that integrate infrastructure with the smart grid to offer demand response and ancillary services; * Distributed generation, alternative energy, renewable sources, and energy storage in buildings; * Emerging standards for data collection, energy control, or interoperability of disparate devices or systems; * Sensing, modeling, and predicting the urban heartbeat including sounds, movements, and radio spectrum; * Human in the loop sensing and control for efficient usage of electricity, gas, heating, water; * Sensor systems for reliable occupancy counting; * Long-lived and energy harvesting sensor systems; * Scalable indoor localization and contextual computing; * Security, privacy, safety, and reliability in built systems; * Empirical studies of city-scale wireless communications; * Environmental Sensing; * Vehicle technologies and Traffic. ### Paper Types We solicit two types of original submissions: * Regular papers for oral presentation (10 pages) * Notes papers for oral presentation (4 pages) Notes papers are 4-page papers intended to discuss preliminary research results, advocate new research directions, describe public software or datasets, or present short projects that do not warrant a 10-page paper. Notes papers serve, in part, to encourage younger researchers and research teams entering this field of research to share their work. We also encourage Notes paper submissions from industry participants that may not be able to devote resources to a full paper. While Notes papers are not expected to have extensive evaluations, they will be reviewed based on the novelty of their ideas, potential for impact, and quality of presentation. ### Submission Guidelines Submitted papers must be unpublished and must not be currently under review for any other publication. Submissions must be full papers, at most 10 single-spaced US Letter (8.5” x 11”) pages, including figures, tables, references, and appendices. Submissions for Note papers must be at most 4 single-spaced US Letter (8.5"x11") pages, including figures, tables, references, and appendices. All submissions must use the LaTeX (preferred) or Word styles found here. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions by: (1) using the "anonymous" option for the class and (2) using "anonsuppress" section where appropriate. Papers that do not meet the size, formatting, and anonymization requirements will not be reviewed. Please note that ACM uses 9-pt fonts in all conference proceedings, and the style (both LaTeX and Word) implicitly define the font size to be 9-pt. The efforts have been in variety of areas such as fuel efficiency, smart features on wheels, performance, batteries, and a cluster of new products made with new materials such as aluminum, carbon fiber, and titanium. One challenging area is related to the communication system within new vehicles. The idea of self-driving vehicles from a decade ago is becoming a reality today. The development of new cars and self-driving vehicles brings a set of new challenges for the designers and drivers as well. Ease of use, accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of the new technologies used in the new vehicles are the main priority for automakers. The idea of “Connected Vehicle” has been the focus of automakers, telecommunication industry, and IT providers for quite a while. The evolution of technologies that advances vehicle connectivity has brought new fields of research and development in several industries. Numerous new terms such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicles-to-everything (V2X), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and others have been conceived to describe the passing of information from one vehicle to the surrounding entities. The aim of this special issue is to create a platform to foster new ideas and technical insights in the design and analysis of vehicular communication systems and discuss emerging technologies. Original manuscript describing unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal are welcome. Papers may describe system level design, modeling, simulation, experiment and optimization of wireless systems, emerging wireless technologies and applications, wireless system protocols and architecture and multilayer integration of RF energy and sensing components that are related to the vehicular communication systems. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. This workshop builds on the success of the twelve previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Domain-specific sensing deployments in scenarios like industrial settings and home automation are becoming more and more ubiquitous, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms which allow for the seamless integration of sensing devices into everyday environments. At the same time, data gathered through wireless sensor network deployments empower applications in the emerging domains of smart cities and smart infrastructures. While enabling technologies have evolved into mature and widely available solutions, insights gathered from real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce and many practical issues in building sensor network applications persist. A thorough understanding of these challenges from a practical/systems perspective is still necessary. This especially applies to insights from the areas of hardware platforms of sensor and actuator nodes, their operating systems, the networking of nodes, and fresh perspectives from field trials and applications. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensing network research communities working on embedded sensing systems to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and the future development of wireless sensing in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realms of wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, smart spaces, machine-to-machine communication, the Internet of Things, and all related disciplines. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Practical experiences from innovative real-world sensor network deployments and applications - Hands-on experiences with the integration of sensor networks and the Internet of Things - Middleware support for sensor networks - Programming and debugging sensor networks - Security, availability and dependability issues in sensor networks - Experiences with new sensor hardware and node/platform designs - Practical problems in implementing localization and time synchronization - Experiences with communications protocols for the IoT, M2M, or CPS - Practical medium access control protocols (MACs) - Topology control and routing protocols in sensor network deployments - Novel communication paradigms for wireless sensor networks - Mobility management in sensor applications and deployments - Fault-tolerance and troubleshooting sensor networks - Experiences regarding energy management and network lifetime - Experiences with energy harvesters and energy-sustainable designs - Deployment, installation, and configuration support - Management of large-scale sensor networks and sensing campaigns - Interconnection between IP and sensor networks - Interfacing with sensor networks using mobile computing devices - Large-scale open sensor data sets from real deployments - Integration of wireless sensor networks with smart city infrastructures - Real-world use of WSN platforms in smart spaces and cyber-physical systems - Sensor networking for smart power grids - Practical experiences with wearable sensing technologies Submitted papers will be reviewed by at least three independent experts in the field. Proceedings of the workshop will be published together with those of IEEE LCN, and will be available in digital format from the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Regular (full) papers (10 pt font in two-column IEEE format) should present novel perspectives and match with at least two of the topics of interest of the workshop. Papers are expected to be 6 pages long, yet submissions of up to 8 pages are allowed. Papers in excess of this limit will not be considered for review or publication. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch Sensornetze – FGSN 2018 ====================================================================== https://www.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/cm/events/fgsn2018/ Die Nutzung von Rechnern, Smartphones und entsprechender Kommunikationstechnik ist für die meisten Menschen unserer heutigen Gesellschaft Teil des Alltags geworden. Aber auch mehr und mehr Gegenstände können kommunizieren, Informationen bereitstellen oder gesteuert werden. In Sensornetzen, Internet-of-Things, Cyber-Physical-Networks, ... kommunizieren nun Geräte verschiedenster Art und für verschiedenste Zweckr miteinander. In manchen Szenarien werden von Sensoren Daten gesammelt und an zentrale Stellen zur Weiterverarbeitung, Speicherung sowie Entscheidungsfindung übertragen. Bei Einsatz von Aktorik können dann auch Regelschleifen geschlossen werden. Je nach Einsatzzweck werden verschiedenste Techniken für die Sensorik, für die Kommunikation, für die Verarbeitung, für die Speicherung etc. Auch wenn schon seit etliche Jahren umfangreiche Forschungen in diesem Umfeld erfolgten, gibt es nach wie vor vielfältige offene Fragestellungen und Herausforderungen. Zudem bestehen sehr breite und unterschiedliche Anwendungsbereiche, die oftmals spezielle Anforderungen an alle einzelnen Komponenten stellen. So sind die Anforderungen zwischen Szenarien bspw. für Smart Farming, für Industrieanlagen oder für Smart Cities sehr unterschiedlich. Es wird daher zur Einreichung von Beiträgen zu den vielfältigen Fragestellungen des breiten Forschungsbereichs aufgerufen. Im Rahmen des Fachgesprächs soll daher die Diskussion gegenüber der Vortragspräsentation im Vordergrund stehen. Beiträge sind in Form von Extended Abstracts einzureichen. Industrial networks are often required to support very low-data rate and low-power devices that are spread over tens of kilometers. The ACM Future Industrial Communication Networks (FICN) workshop aims to address some of the challenges related to industrial communication networks. Avoiding these consequences is not a trivial problem, because a CPS which can readily communicate with users, remote computers, as well as other CPSs, is naturally vulnerable to network failures and malicious interference. Reports of such attacks, and public concern about them, have increased in recent years. It is essential to develop CPSs which are reliable (or trustworthy), because their functionality and timing are provably correct; and which are resilient, because they are designed to cope with both internal errors and external attacks. A resilient CPS will continue to operate normally as long as possible, and then provide functionality that reduces gracefully and safely if problems increase and cannot be overcome. The design of reliable and resilient CPSs (RRCPS) directly involves topics such as real-time control, sensor design, and security; and the use of machine learning and data mining to provide more sophisticated and versatile behavior. In particular, special attention needs to be paid to the application of Internet of Things (IoT) in building RRCPS, because the IoT is essential to realize a vision of the future CPSs where numerous devices are tightly connected over the Internet, allowing them to collect information about the real world in real time, and share it with other systems and physical devices. In fact, CPS can be considered as real-time IoT, which requires end-to-end real-time performance on top of conventional characteristics of IoT. In the information age, unprecedented research of cyber physical infrastructures includes: the acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data such as sensors, devices, vehicles, buildings, and human, to tackle the major issues that cities face, e.g., air pollution, increased energy consumption and traffic congestion. Systems optimization, data analysis and modeling applied to the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g., by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s quality-of-life. The 5th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2018) will be held November 7-8, 2018 at Shenzhen, China. Small data sets span typically from metering data and status reports to remote commands and data generated and transmitted within the IoT. They are generally produced by a multitude of devices which access the communication infrastructure sporadically, generating a massive amount of short packets that have to be received with high reliability, exploiting the available spectrum resources efficiently even in absence of coordination. In such a framework, the design of the network protocol departs from conventional approaches used for predictable and persistent data sources. Major changes have to be applied to the physical and the medium access control (MAC) layers to account for the sporadic nature of the transmissions, touching all basic aspects from signal detection, channel estimation, coding and modulation up to the medium sharing policies and possibly involving the higher layers of the communications stack. While traditional protocols treat interference as a waste and therefore are designed to avoid them, in recent years several innovative developments have been proposed, such as physical layer network coding and various techniques based on successive interference cancellation (SIC), where interference is instead embraced and creatively utilized. These developments have opened a completely new perspective for uncoordinated protocols, paving the way to dramatic performance improvements, and rendering the throughput of interference-limited channels competitive with respect to that of systems relying on predictable data sources. This is calling for new studies on the fundamental limits as well as on finding optimal ways of designing waveform, signal-processing algorithms, error correcting schemes and access protocols, and on theoretical tools to drive the system design. Research in the field is further buttressed by clearly defined market- driven goals from the industry, in the quest for highly reliable, highly efficient, low-complexity access solutions for a massive number of devices. The road towards 5G and more generally machine-type communications represent only some relevant application examples where upcoming research has the potential to leave a fundamental mark. The goal of this workshop is to stimulate new contributions to the topic, with emphasis on cross-layer interactions between the MAC and PHY layers of the protocol stack, as well as on the connections to coding and information theory. (apologies for multiple postings) ACM SIGCOMM Student Research Competition (SRC) Introduction The ACM SIGCOMM Student Research Competition (SRC) offers a unique forum for undergraduate and graduate students to present their original research before a panel of judges and attendees at well-known ACM-sponsored and co-sponsored conferences. Winners of the ACM SIGCOMM SRC at SIGCOMM will advance to ACM Grand Finals of the Student Research Competition to compete against the winners of other ACM conferences. The SRC, including a small travel budget for each participant, is sponsored by Microsoft Research. How does the competition work? The ACM SRC at SIGCOMM organizes two distinct competitions for undergraduate and graduate students. The timeline of the competition is as follows: 1. Pre-selection: Students submit their work as a poster/demo here. See eligibility criteria below. 2. 1st round "Poster session": The selected students register to the conference and present their work in front of the conference attendees. Specifications on poster size and content will be defined by the SRC chairs. Students are expected to discuss their work with evaluators who visit their presentation areas. Each evaluator will rate the student's visual presentation based on the criteria of uniqueness of the approach, the significance of the contribution, visual presentation, and format of presentation. The evaluation criteria used can be found under General Judging Criteria<https://src.acm.org/judging>. 3. 2nd round "Presentation session": A separate session is scheduled for semi-finalists to give a ten minute presentation followed by a five minute question and answer period. This session will be attended by the evaluators and any interested conference attendees. The top three finalists in each category will be chosen based on these presentations. 4. Announcement of Three Finalists In Each Category (Undergraduate and Graduate): This usually takes place at a well-attended session of the conference. Each student will receive their prize after the conference. The first place winners will compete in the Grand Finals, which takes place toward the end of the program year. 5. The Grand Finals: The undergraduate and graduate first place winners from all SRCs for the program year compete in the Grand Finals. More information here. Who is eligible? You have to submit a poster or demo abstract to SIGCOMM (Poster and Demo page<https://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2018/cf-posters.html>). Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission, and be the lead student author of the project. If a graduate or undergraduate student is part of a group research project and wishes to participate in an SRC, they will be required to submit a separate write-up describing their individual contribution to the group research project if they are selected (we can decide whether we want the write-up to be submitted at the demo/poster deadline or later), and present it during the first and second round "poster" and "presentation" sessions (see the above section). Following the same spirit, in case of demo submissions, the student contributions should be clearly defined. Submissions must be original research that is not already published at another conference or journal (e.g., please do not submit your dissertation summary as your abstract). One of the goals of the SRC is to give students feedback on ongoing, unpublished work. Note that submissions based on work accepted at this SIGCOMM will not be considered eligible. The SRC does count as a presentation venue, and submitting the work that is being submitted at other venues would violate the ACM SIGCOMM duplicate submission policy. You can only participate in one ACM SIGCOMM SRC per year. Selected students must register to the ACM SIGCOMM conference. How to participate? The ACM SIGCOMM poster and demo sessions will also serve as an ACM SIGCOMM Student Research Competition. To enter the first stage of the SRC, submit a poster or demo abstract. SRC submissions should be at most 100 word abstracts. Submissions should not exceed the minimum between two (2) pages and 800 words. If a submission has multiple authors, please provide the name of your advisor or supervisor when submitting the paper. The candidate student should be the first author. While not mandatory, entrants are encouraged to submit a letter from their advisor/supervisors describing the specific contributions made by the student. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. This workshop builds on the success of the twelve previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback.
