Building on 15 years of successful EWSN conferences, the 16th edition marks a significant change: for the first time, EWSN will go outside Europe, and be held in Beijing, China. The conference aims at a broader impact world-wide, while maintaining its role as a premier conference originated from Europe. The conference solicits both full technical papers and short papers describing validated early ideas. However, the growth of smart units is limited by a fundamental factor, namely, battery. The reasons are primarily twofold: First, battery energy density only increased by three times over the past 22 years, which is much slower than many other areas of computation technology (e.g., transistors in an ASIC, data rates, etc.). Second, used batteries contain harmful chemicals and generate dangerous toxic waste that has to be properly processed. For many years, researchers have been working on reducing computation and communication power consumption. Despite the remarkable advancements in energy efficient computation and networking, we are still facing poor battery life, which challenges usage of many mobile applications and makes customers unhappy. A promising idea to address the problem of battery life is backscattering-based computation and transmissions, which concerns harvesting RF energy to power a backscatter unit's operation: The backscatter unit compute data and transmits them via reflecting the RF signal. Ambient and RFID backscattering are two techniques that enable data computation and transmission on battery-free units. Traditional RFID is a widely used technology that harvests power from RF signals emitted by an RFID reader. Sensor-augmented RFID tags can be deployed in smart environments to get real-time information about the state of tagged objects. Ambient backscattering harvests power from ambient signals such as TV, cellular, and Wi-Fi transmissions, enabling the design of battery-free units that can operate outdoor. Although backscattering enables battery-free operation, mobile units can operate with a relatively small power budget, posing significant constraints regarding operation and communication solutions. The bottleneck in terms of power consumption has shifted away from communication to computation, requiring a redesign at the unit level of data acquisition, data processing, buffering, packetizing, to achieve ultra-low power computation, and at the networking level to realize efficient backscatter-based architectures. This special issue (SI) aims at inviting works from leading researchers and developers from industry and academia to present recent and trending views on all aspects of backscattering-based computation and transmission. Propelled by the explosive growth in IoT, this trend is only going to accelerate in the years to come with new inventions in the =C3=A1r= ea of human-IoT interaction technologies to deliver powerful engaging and intuitive experiences. But, these developments have remained confined to only the sensing and transmission of aural and optical information in the digital domain through the use of microphone, camera, speaker and display devices. However, the ability to integrate the other three sensory features, namely, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste) and tactile (touch) in information transfer and replication to deliver Star-Wars-like being there experience are still far from reality. Human bond communication (HBC) is a novel concept that incorporates all five sensory information from sensing to digitization to transmission and replication at the receiver to allow more expressive, engaging, realistic and holistic information between humans, and in some cases between humans and machines (M2H) or IoTs. This FT solicits articles that explore different aspects of HBC, IoTs for HBC and the interplay between these two fields, M2M and M2H, which also include the other three human sensory information (olfactory, tactile and gustatory) in addition to aural and optical sensors. Although the FT invites papers on research topics on sensing and replication, the focus of these papers should be on the ICT angle in this regards and on how information is encoded, transmitted and decoded reliably and securely in a world which would increasingly become multi-sensory. Aber auch mehr und mehr Gegenstände können kommunizieren, Informationen bereitstellen oder gesteuert werden. In Sensornetzen, Internet-of-Things, Cyber-Physical-Networks, ... kommunizieren nun Geräte verschiedenster Art und für verschiedenste Zweckr miteinander. In manchen Szenarien werden von Sensoren Daten gesammelt und an zentrale Stellen zur Weiterverarbeitung, Speicherung sowie Entscheidungsfindung übertragen. Bei Einsatz von Aktorik können dann auch Regelschleifen geschlossen werden. Je nach Einsatzzweck werden verschiedenste Techniken für die Sensorik, für die Kommunikation, für die Verarbeitung, für die Speicherung etc. Auch wenn schon seit etliche Jahren umfangreiche Forschungen in diesem Umfeld erfolgten, gibt es nach wie vor vielfältige offene Fragestellungen und Herausforderungen. Zudem bestehen sehr breite und unterschiedliche Anwendungsbereiche, die oftmals spezielle Anforderungen an alle einzelnen Komponenten stellen. So sind die Anforderungen zwischen Szenarien bspw. für Smart Farming, für Industrieanlagen oder für Smart Cities sehr unterschiedlich. Es wird daher zur Einreichung von Beiträgen zu den vielfältigen Fragestellungen des breiten Forschungsbereichs aufgerufen. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch Sensornetze – FGSN 2018 ====================================================================== https://www.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/cm/events/fgsn2018/ Die Nutzung von Rechnern, Smartphones und entsprechender Kommunikationstechnik ist für die meisten Menschen unserer heutigen Gesellschaft Teil des Alltags geworden. Aber auch mehr und mehr Gegenstände können kommunizieren, Informationen bereitstellen oder gesteuert werden. In Sensornetzen, Internet-of-Things, Cyber-Physical-Networks, ... kommunizieren nun Geräte verschiedenster Art und für verschiedenste Zweckr miteinander. In manchen Szenarien werden von Sensoren Daten gesammelt und an zentrale Stellen zur Weiterverarbeitung, Speicherung sowie Entscheidungsfindung übertragen. Bei Einsatz von Aktorik können dann auch Regelschleifen geschlossen werden. Je nach Einsatzzweck werden verschiedenste Techniken für die Sensorik, für die Kommunikation, für die Verarbeitung, für die Speicherung etc. Auch wenn schon seit etliche Jahren umfangreiche Forschungen in diesem Umfeld erfolgten, gibt es nach wie vor vielfältige offene Fragestellungen und Herausforderungen. Zudem bestehen sehr breite und unterschiedliche Anwendungsbereiche, die oftmals spezielle Anforderungen an alle einzelnen Komponenten stellen. So sind die Anforderungen zwischen Szenarien bspw. für Smart Farming, für Industrieanlagen oder für Smart Cities sehr unterschiedlich. Es wird daher zur Einreichung von Beiträgen zu den vielfältigen Fragestellungen des breiten Forschungsbereichs aufgerufen. Sie sollen 2-4 Seiten umfassen und im doppelspaltigen IEEE Transaction Format für Konferenzen in 10pt Schrift auf A4 verfasst werden. Das Fachgespräch ist offen für Beiträge, die bei anderen begutachteten Veranstaltungen publiziert werden. As a premier agent for stimulating a quality of life compatible with a resource efficient economy, the smart city phenomenon has recently seized the imagination of the academia and the industry significantly. As the Internet of things (IoT) and Tactile Internet are predictable to be a primary driving force for future cities, advanced communication methods will play a crucial role in assisting real-time data acquisition and utilization from distributed sensors. However, smart cities will also have to function within the limitations of the national economy and available resources. Consequently, the challenges in the realization of smart cities are many and varied. In general, low energy consumption, constrained bandwidth, latency and budgetary limitations are predominate. In order to overcome these hurdles, it is essential that new ideas and theories for optimizing the network in energy, spectral, latency and monetary terms are presented to achieve a robust environment monitoring and sustainable transportation network, among other provisions. This led the researchers to pave the way for future wireless networks under the umbrella of 5G communications as well. This is an amalgamation of a multitude of technologies ranging from device-level algorithms such as low power transmissions to system-level architectures such as software-defined networking (SDN), the challenges posed by each of these techniques are critical. The smart city idea is also known to work at the intersection of various techniques such as device-to-device (D2D) communications, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, full-duplex transmissions and Internet of Things (IoT) to name a few. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a group of experts with interest in emerging smart cities related areas. The recent advancement in smart cities has boosted the development of a new generation of highly-efficient mobile networks. After the successful editions of this workshop in IEEE ISWCS 2016 and IEEE PIMRC 2017, this workshop will highlight the recent developments in this evolving area. It will provide a platform for exchanging new ideas and research collaboration. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. This workshop builds on the success of the twelve previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs), opportunistic communication and computing • Architecture, design, and implementation of communication systems for challenged networks • Communication systems and networks for underground mining • Underwater communication systems and networks • Security/trust/privacy concerns and solutions in challenged networks • Networking in polar regions • Millimeter Wave Networking • Modeling, analysis, and characterization of challenged networks and protocols • Challenged networking techniques for mobile cloud computing • Mobile data offloading via challenged networks • Challenged networking techniques for participatory and opportunistic sensing • Challenged networking in the Internet of Things • Challenged networking in Cyber-Physical Systems • Software-defined networking in challenged environments • Energy-efficient communication in challenged networks • Space-terrestrial networks, lunar networks as well as interplanetary networks • Information centric and content-centric networking in challenged networks • Real-world mobility trace collection, analysis, and modeling for challenged environments • Network coding in challenged networks • Real deployment and case studies in various stages of use • Disrupted scenarios for challenged networks (e.g., disaster relief and emergency management) • User Interfaces and interactive applications optimized for Challenged Networks • Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems • Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks. PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ________________________________________ General Paper Format: Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages, and should adhere to the standard ACM conference proceedings format. Authors must register the abstract 1 week prior to the full paper submission. Demo/Poster Format: Demo and poster proposals will be published as part of the proceedings and must not be longer than 2 pages. For demos, an additional page must describe the precise setup and requirements (the 1-page setup description will not be published in the proceedings). Submission: Reviews will be single-blinded. Papers should neither have been published elsewhere nor being currently under review by another conference or journal. In the information age, unprecedented research of cyber-physical infrastructures includes the acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data such as sensors, devices, vehicles, buildings, and human, to tackle the major issues that cities face, e.g., air pollution, increased energy consumption and traffic congestion. Systems optimization, data analysis and modeling applied to the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g., by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s quality-of-life. These systems represent the foundation for emerging “smart cities”. The 5th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2018) will be held November 7-8, 2018 at Shenzhen, China. This year at least five best papers in the ACM BuildSys proceedings will be selected into the ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks with minor revision, upon authors' agreement. BuildSys is the premier conference for researchers and practitioners working to develop and optimize smart infrastructure systems that are driven by sophisticated sensing, computing, and control functions. We invite original contributions including, but not limited to the following: * Applications in smart and connected communities; * Sensing and control for urban infrastructure systems; * Novel sensor methodologies, techniques, and tools; * Sensing and control of electrical, gas, and water loads; * Improved user interfaces to built infrastructure; * Modeling, simulation, optimization, and control of heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, water usage and other resource flows in built environments; * Sensor systems and applications that enhance energy efficiency, energy reliability, durability, and comfort; * Systems that integrate infrastructure with the smart grid to offer demand response and ancillary services; * Distributed generation, alternative energy, renewable sources, and energy storage in buildings; * Emerging standards for data collection, energy control, or interoperability of disparate devices or systems; * Sensing, modeling, and predicting the urban heartbeat including sounds, movements, and radio spectrum; * Human in the loop sensing and control for efficient usage of electricity, gas, heating, water; * Sensor systems for reliable occupancy counting; * Long-lived and energy harvesting sensor systems; * Scalable indoor localization and contextual computing; * Security, privacy, safety, and reliability in built systems; * Empirical studies of city-scale wireless communications; * Environmental Sensing; * Vehicle technologies and Traffic. ### Paper Types We solicit two types of original submissions: * Regular papers for oral presentation (10 pages) * Notes papers for oral presentation (4 pages) Notes papers are 4-page papers intended to discuss preliminary research results, advocate new research directions, describe public software or datasets, or present short projects that do not warrant a 10-page paper. Notes papers serve, in part, to encourage younger researchers and research teams entering this field of research to share their work. We also encourage Notes paper submissions from industry participants that may not be able to devote resources to a full paper. While Notes papers are not expected to have extensive evaluations, they will be reviewed based on the novelty of their ideas, potential for impact, and quality of presentation. ### Submission Guidelines Submitted papers must be unpublished and must not be currently under review for any other publication. Submissions must be full papers, at most 10 single-spaced US Letter (8.5” x 11”) pages, including figures, tables, references, and appendices. Submissions for Note papers must be at most 4 single-spaced US Letter (8.5"x11") pages, including figures, tables, references, and appendices. All submissions must use the LaTeX (preferred) or Word styles found here. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions by: (1) using the "anonymous" option for the class and (2) using "anonsuppress" section where appropriate. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. This workshop builds on the success of the twelve previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch Sensornetze – FGSN 2018 ====================================================================== https://www.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/cm/events/fgsn2018/ Die Nutzung von Rechnern, Smartphones und entsprechender Kommunikationstechnik ist für die meisten Menschen unserer heutigen Gesellschaft Teil des Alltags geworden. Aber auch mehr und mehr Gegenstände können kommunizieren, Informationen bereitstellen oder gesteuert werden. In Sensornetzen, Internet-of-Things, Cyber-Physical-Networks, ... kommunizieren nun Geräte verschiedenster Art und für verschiedenste Zweckr miteinander. In manchen Szenarien werden von Sensoren Daten gesammelt und an zentrale Stellen zur Weiterverarbeitung, Speicherung sowie Entscheidungsfindung übertragen. Bei Einsatz von Aktorik können dann auch Regelschleifen geschlossen werden. Je nach Einsatzzweck werden verschiedenste Techniken für die Sensorik, für die Kommunikation, für die Verarbeitung, für die Speicherung etc. Auch wenn schon seit etliche Jahren umfangreiche Forschungen in diesem Umfeld erfolgten, gibt es nach wie vor vielfältige offene Fragestellungen und Herausforderungen. Zudem bestehen sehr breite und unterschiedliche Anwendungsbereiche, die oftmals spezielle Anforderungen an alle einzelnen Komponenten stellen. So sind die Anforderungen zwischen Szenarien bspw. für Smart Farming, für Industrieanlagen oder für Smart Cities sehr unterschiedlich. Es wird daher zur Einreichung von Beiträgen zu den vielfältigen Fragestellungen des breiten Forschungsbereichs aufgerufen. Dies kann u.a., aber nicht ausschließlich, Themenbereiche beinhalten wie: - Drahtlose Sensor- und Aktornetze - Internet of Things - Cyber-Physical Systems und Networks - Device-to-Device communication - Mobile Ad hoc und Mesh Netze - Automobilanwendungen und Smart Vehicles in Networked Worlds - Transportation, Fleet Management, Traffic Management - Verteilte Systeme für das IoT, IoT Protokolle und Standardisierung - Sensordatenerfassung und Crowd Sensing - Hausautomatisierung und Verteilte Energieanwendungen - Smart Buildings und Smart Cities - Zuverlässigkeit und Performanzeigenschaften - Energie- und ressourceneffiziente Sensorknoten und Sensornetze - Werkzeuge für Test und Evaluation (Simulatoren, Emulatoren, Testbeds, ...) Industrial networks are often required to support very low-data rate and low-power devices that are spread over tens of kilometers. The ACM Future Industrial Communication Networks (FICN) workshop aims to address some of the challenges related to industrial communication networks. Avoiding these consequences is not a trivial problem, because a CPS which can readily communicate with users, remote computers, as well as other CPSs, is naturally vulnerable to network failures and malicious interference. Reports of such attacks, and public concern about them, have increased in recent years. It is essential to develop CPSs which are reliable (or trustworthy), because their functionality and timing are provably correct; and which are resilient, because they are designed to cope with both internal errors and external attacks. A resilient CPS will continue to operate normally as long as possible, and then provide functionality that reduces gracefully and safely if problems increase and cannot be overcome. The design of reliable and resilient CPSs (RRCPS) directly involves topics such as real-time control, sensor design, and security; and the use of machine learning and data mining to provide more sophisticated and versatile behavior. In particular, special attention needs to be paid to the application of Internet of Things (IoT) in building RRCPS, because the IoT is essential to realize a vision of the future CPSs where numerous devices are tightly connected over the Internet, allowing them to collect information about the real world in real time, and share it with other systems and physical devices. In fact, CPS can be considered as real-time IoT, which requires end-to-end real-time performance on top of conventional characteristics of IoT. This special issue will cover both theory and practice, with a focus that ranges from the platforms on which RRCPS can be built to applications of RRCPS. Systems optimization, data analysis and modeling applied to the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g., by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s quality-of-life. These systems represent the foundation for emerging “smart cities”. The 5th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2018) will be held November 7-8, 2018 at Shenzhen, China. This year at least five best papers in the ACM BuildSys proceedings will be selected into the ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks with minor revision, upon authors' agreement. Notes papers serve, in part, to encourage younger researchers and research teams entering this field of research to share their work. We also encourage Notes paper submissions from industry participants that may not be able to devote resources to a full paper. Small data sets span typically from metering data and status reports to remote commands and data generated and transmitted within the IoT. They are generally produced by a multitude of devices which access the communication infrastructure sporadically, generating a massive amount of short packets that have to be received with high reliability, exploiting the available spectrum resources efficiently even in absence of coordination. In such a framework, the design of the network protocol departs from conventional approaches used for predictable and persistent data sources. Major changes have to be applied to the physical and the medium access control (MAC) layers to account for the sporadic nature of the transmissions, touching all basic aspects from signal detection, channel estimation, coding and modulation up to the medium sharing policies and possibly involving the higher layers of the communications stack. While traditional protocols treat interference as a waste and therefore are designed to avoid them, in recent years several innovative developments have been proposed, such as physical layer network coding and various techniques based on successive interference cancellation (SIC), where interference is instead embraced and creatively utilized. These developments have opened a completely new perspective for uncoordinated protocols, paving the way to dramatic performance improvements, and rendering the throughput of interference-limited channels competitive with respect to that of systems relying on predictable data sources. This is calling for new studies on the fundamental limits as well as on finding optimal ways of designing waveform, signal-processing algorithms, error correcting schemes and access protocols, and on theoretical tools to drive the system design. Research in the field is further buttressed by clearly defined market- driven goals from the industry, in the quest for highly reliable, highly efficient, low-complexity access solutions for a massive number of devices. The road towards 5G and more generally machine-type communications represent only some relevant application examples where upcoming research has the potential to leave a fundamental mark. The goal of this workshop is to stimulate new contributions to the topic, with emphasis on cross-layer interactions between the MAC and PHY layers of the protocol stack, as well as on the connections to coding and information theory.
