-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2nd Call for Posters and Demos EWSN 2018 - International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks February 14-16, 2018 Madrid, Spain https://ewsn2018.networks.imdea.org/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- CALL FOR POSTERS & DEMOS --- The International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) is a highly selective single-track international conference focusing on premier research results at the intersection of embedded systems and wireless networking - an area of highest relevance for visionary technologies such as the Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems as well as applications such as Industry 4.0, Smart Production, Smart Cities, and Connected Cars. In addition to full research papers, EWSN solicits submissions of poster and demo abstracts. The poster session at EWSN will provide a forum for researchers to present their work in progress and to receive early feedback from leading experts attending the conference. Accepted poster and demo abstracts will be included in the conference proceedings, which will be available in the ACM Digital Library. We adopt a single-blind review process for poster and demo abstracts. Please do not anonymize your submission and include name, affiliation, and contact information of all authors on the first page. A short abstract must be provided on the first page before the main body of the paper. Submission titles must start with "Poster: ..." or "Demo: ...", depending on the type of submission. Poster and demo abstracts must be submitted as a single PDF containing no more than 2 pages, including figures, tables, and references. Demos must include one additional page describing the setup of the demo (hardware used, space needed, special equipment, etc.). Pages must have 8.5" x 11" (letter) two-column format, using 10-point font on a minimum 11-point interline spacing. All text must be kept within a print area of at most 7" wide by 9" high, with an intercolumn spacing of 0.25". Recently, as the future vision of urban development, smart city is attracting growing attention from both academia and industry. The workshop will additionally stimulate dialog about the implications of computational sensing for society. Sensing has primarily been understood as collecting physiological measurements, often with wearable devices. This workshop adopts a broader, human-focused view of sensing as capturing any measurable data linked to individuals and, by extension, to their communities. With this understanding, sensing involves human reactions and interactions observed in spoken, written, or signed language, eye gaze, facial and bodily expressions, social networks, geospatial patterns, and other such human-generated data. Starting as a niche application over Wi-Fi, they can now be found in mainstream technologies like Bluetooth LE, LTE Direct and Wireless LANs, and have become the cornerstone of upcoming networking paradigms including mesh and sensor networks, the Internet of Things, cloud networks, vehicular networks, disruption tolerant and opportunistic networks, underwater and intra-body networks. The challenges of this exciting research field are numerous. Examples include how to make smart use of these novel technologies when multiple technologies or a mix of permanent services and on-demand networking opportunities are available to a network node, how to provide robust services in highly dynamic environments, how to efficiently employ and operate heavily resource-constrained devices, and how to develop robust and lightweight algorithms for self-organization and adaptation. Finally, there are many application specific challenges. WONS, now in its fourteenth edition, is a high quality forum to address these challenges. WONS aims to provide a global platform for rich interactions between experts in their fields, discussing innovative contributions in a stimulating environment. This announcement solicits original contributions of high-quality research providing novel insights on all aspects of wireless on-demand networks and systems; from protocol and network design, modeling, performance evaluation, energy efficiency, QoS models and mechanisms, practical implementations, service level aspects, application use-cases, to the integration of multiple wireless network technologies. Topics of interest comprise, but are not limited to: - Cognitive radio networks - Cross-layer design - Energy-efficient protocols and power management - Heterogeneous wireless networks - Implementations and testbeds - Integration and co-existence of heterogeneous technologies - Intra-body and biomedical on-demand systems - Green wireless networks - Localization and mobility management - MAC and advanced PHY technologies - Middleware aspects - Mobile peer-to-peer systems - Mobile computing and services - Modeling and optimization - Network management - New architectures for on-demand wireless systems - Novel applications and services - Opportunistic, delay-tolerant, and dissemination based protocols - Performance evaluation through simulations and experiments - Pervasive and ubiquitous computing - Security, privacy, and trust - Social and economic aspects - Underwater on-demand networked systems Manuscript submissions: Authors are invited to submit double-column long papers (up to 8 pages) and short papers (up to 4 pages) as a PDF file in IEEE format with a font size no smaller than 10pt. All paper submissions must be written in English. The mandatory IEEE template in Microsoft Word and LaTeX format can be found at the IEEE templates page. All submitted manuscripts must be at least 3 pages in length. Short papers should present future research directions and ongoing work with visionary, innovative ideas; accepted short papers will populate poster sessions at the conference and will be included in the conference proceedings. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper. There is a large variety of ITS networks spanning from mobile ground networks, e.g. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) to aerial ground networks, e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks. VANET is a kind of ITS networks where a vehicle is a connected car equipped with various communications technologies such as: Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and cellular networks (3G/4G). The purpose of VANET is to ensure a wide area coverage for all vehicles in scaling the network, thus achieving the always best connected paradigm where the best connectivity is offered to clients wherever they are and at any time. UAV is another kind of aerial ITS networks, which are used in military applications for target monitoring and engaging air to ground combats. It is also used in civil applications to explore inaccessible areas and deliver data to and from areas with no network infrastructure. There are many unprecedented challenges to realize ITS network; security and privacy is one of them since, on one hand, vehicles exchange sensitive data (e.g., accidents notification, coordinates of nuclear sites, etc.) and on the other hand they form a specific network with particular characteristics (frequent fragmentation and dynamic topology). This special issue covers studies and solutions that ensure ITS security and privacy. We encourage authors from the industry and academe to submit their original research works that will enhance our understanding and modeling of security, privacy, and attacks. The review of full papers will follow the standard double-blind policy. Notes, up to 4 pages in 9-point ACM double-column format for the main body of the paper (i.e., everything excluding references) and unlimited number of pages for appendices and references. Notes are intended to discuss preliminary research results, advocate new research directions, or present industrial projects. While notes are not expected to have extensive evaluations, they will be reviewed based on the novelty of their ideas, potential for impact, and quality of presentation. The review of note will also follow the standard double-blind policy. Poster/Demo descriptions, up to 2 pages in 9-point ACM double-column format showcasing work in progress are encouraged. Accepted posters/demos will be showcased in a separate session at the conference. Topics of interest are the same as research topics listed above. The evolution of traditional wireless sensor networks towards the IoT has introduced numerous opportunities for advanced and promising applications for citizens and industries. Many companies have recently launched "smart products" into the market, in every domain: home, automotive, agriculture, water, air, environment, etc. Most of these products are quite innovative and can be useful for improving and simplifying the lives of citizens, assisting them to their daily activities or contributing also to improving the municipal services and improving the quality of the environment we live. However, most of these products fail to address even simple challenges for security and privacy: they do not protect the data they gather and transmit, they do not use encrypted connections, they use simplistic credentials, etc. The IoT, though, raises significant challenges regarding security, and privacy. Having large numbers of connected devices deployed everywhere around us, e.g. in homes, offices, buses, on the street, monitoring the everyday activities of citizens raises issues regarding user privacy. Privacy issues exist not only when users are actively involved in IoT applications e.g. when sending data from their mobile phones, but also when they are subjects of monitoring by other devices, e.g. when they are being monitored by cameras on the streets. Devices that offer actuation capabilities, e.g. traffic lights, doors, windows, alarms and vehicles allow cyber-attacks to extend effects to the real world. Current centralized IoT solutions raise also security and privacy issues due to the single central point of gathering all data and mechanisms. To address this, lately, there is a shift of interest towards distributed or decentralized security solutions. This workshop builds on the success of the first RED-IoT workshop collocated with the IEEE CAMAD 2014 conference in Athens, Greece, December 2014. It aims to bring together experts from academia and industry that are working in cross-layer issues in the areas of security, and privacy in the IoT. There is an ever-growing population, increasing concentration of people in cities, environmental concerns, and the growing aspirations of people towards vehicle ownership, especially in developing countries. All of these throw up myriad challenges to improve transportation systems - in order to make them more efficient, increase their safety and comfort level, and reduce their negative impacts on the environment. At the same time, a variety of recent developments in the domains of engineering and information and communication technologies (ICT) have opened up possibilities that are poised to disrupt transportation systems in the near future. These include autonomous vehicles, electromobility, intelligent traffic lights and autonomous intersection management, the possibilities of ride sharing and aggregation services (such as those provided by Uber), and new toll pricing policies, parking management systems and public transport management systems using dynamic policies. In addition, the emergence of data science and analytics will also provide new tools using which transportation systems and services will be managed in the future. The confluence of this multitude of technologies and tools from different domains and the impact they will have in future transportation systems will be the theme of this special issue on Transportation Cyber-Physical Systems. The aim of this special issue will be to feature articles on new technologies that will impact future transportation systems. They might span across vehicular technologies - such as autonomous vehicles, vehicle platooning and electric cars, communication technologies to enable vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, security mechanisms, infrastructure-level technologies to support transportation, as well as management systems and policies such as traffic light control, intersection management, dynamic toll pricing and parking management. In addition to terrestrial transportation, traffic control and autonomous management of aerial vehicles and maritime ships are also of interest. Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) will host also this year a competition to compare the performance of WSN and IoT communication protocols in harsh RF environments. FORMAT: This year's dependability competition will have a new format compared to the past two editions, the most prominent changes being that it will take place remotely over a longer time window, and that it will involve the reporting of multiple events from several nodes. Interested participants should first submit an abstract describing their approach by the competition entry deadline. Accepted contestants will obtain the credentials to remotely access the competition infrastructure and enter the preparation phase, after which each team needs to provide one binary that will be used for the final evaluation. A poster session entirely dedicated to the dependability competition will take place during the evening of the first conference day. All competing teams must present their solution in the poster session and will have the possibility to engage in lively discussions with the other conference attendees. The winners of the competition will be awarded during a dedicated plenary session on the second conference day and will hold a 10-minutes talk presenting their solution, followed by a short discussion. COMPETITION SCENARIO AND EVALUATION PROCEDURE: The competition scenario emulates the operation of a sensor and actuator network monitoring discrete events in an industrial setting where several co-existing wireless devices are crowding the RF spectrum. All wireless communication protocols used in low-power wireless sensor networks are welcome, and there is no restriction on the operating system used to program the sensor nodes. The competition will take place if at least 5 teams respond to this preliminary call for competitors. Depending on the nature and number of submissions, multiple categories may be defined. The winning teams in each category will receive cash awards and present their approach at EWSN in a 10-minutes plenary talk. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Interested participants should first submit a two-page abstract describing their approach by the competition entry deadline, following the formatting requirements described on the competition Webpage. The abstracts will be used to pre-select the participants to the competition. In cloud-centric IoT applications, the sensor data from these “things” is extracted, accumulated and processed at the public/private clouds, leading to significant latencies. To satisfy the ever increasing demand for Cloud Computing resources from emerging applications such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), academics and industry experts are now advocating for going from large-centralized Cloud Computing infrastructures to micro data centres located at the edge of the network. These micro data centres are often closer to a user (geographically and in access latency) compared to the centralised cloud data centre. The aim of utilizing such edge resources is to off load computation that would have “traditionally” been carried out at the cloud data centre to a resource that is closer to a user or edge devices. This vision also acknowledges the variation in network latency from an end user to cloud data centre. Whereas the network around a data centre is often high capacity and speed, that near the user device may have variably properties (in terms of resilience, bandwidth, latency, etc). Referred to as “fog/edge computing”, this paradigm is expected to improve the agility of cloud service deployments in addition to bringing computing resources closer to end-users. On the one hand, the development of Fog and Edge clouds includes dedicated facilities, operating system, network and middleware techniques to build and operate such micro data centres that host virtualized computing resources. On the other hand, the use of Fog and Edge clouds requires extension to current programming models and propose new abstractions that will allow developers to design new applications that take benefit from such massively distributed systems. The use of this approach also opens up other challenges in: security and privacy (as a user now needs to “trust” every micro data centre they interact with), support for resource management for mobile users who transfer session from one micro data centre to another, support for “embedding” such micro data centres into devices (e.g. cars, buildings, etc). The conference seeks to attract contributions covering both theory and practice of any of the aforementioned challenges, from the management software stack to domain-specific applications. These systems include real-time video/audio surveillance, remote e-health systems, intelligent transportation systems, and Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and etc. Mobile edge computing, by placing various cloud resources (e.g., computational and storage resources) closer to smart devices/objects, has been envisioned as an enabling and highly promising technology to realize and reap the promising benefits of H-IoTs applications. However, the growing demands for ultra-low latency, massive connectivity, and high reliability of the large number of H-IoTs applications has yielded a critical issue in mobile edge computing, i.e. the limited connections (such as connection capacity, bandwidth, or the number of simultaneously affordable connections) between mobile edge cloud and smart devices/objects. Multi-access mobile edge computing (MA-MEC), which actively exploits a systematic and adaptive integration of recent radio access technologies including 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi to enhance the access capacity of smart devices to mobile edge platforms, has been considered as a highly promising technology to tackle this issue. The evolution towards the architecture of ultra-dense small-cells in future radio access networks facilitates the MA-MEC, i.e., the densely deployed small cells can significantly improve the capacity and quality of the connections between smart devices and mobile edge cloud. Therefore, with the strength of multi-access for capacity-enhancement, the MA-MEC is expected to bring a variety of benefits, such as i) ultra-low latency between smart devices and edge cloud for real-time, interactive, and mission-critical applications, e.g., the real-time indoor navigation and augmented virtual-reality, ii) privacy and security in local communications to access mobile edge! cloud, and iii) big data analytics at the point of capture for IoT applications. However, the success of MA-MEC still requires tackling many new challenges. For instance, to efficiently exploit computation and storage resources at mobile edge nodes, a joint optimization of placement of computation/storage resource and cell-association with radio resource allocation is necessitated. Such joint optimization should be adaptive according to time-varying environments, e.g., the varying wireless channel states when users move across the cells and the dynamic computation/storage resource utilizations. The resulting presence of networks of intelligent systems in our daily environment opens fascinating application areas but, at the same time, bears the problem of their controllability. Hence, different design concepts (such as the MAPE cycle and the Observer/Controller framework) have been developed to allow for a self-organised control process at runtime that relieves the designer from specifying all possibly occurring situations and configurations within the design process. Instead, the system itself takes over responsibility to find proper reactions to perceived changes in the environmental conditions. As designers are not able to foresee all possibly occurring situations and circumstances the system will face during its operation time, the self-organisation process of the system has to pursue a steadily self-optimising behaviour. Self-optimising behaviour can be triggered at various levels of the system’s design, ranging from basic control architectures over self-organised coordination/collaboration methods as well as from domain-specific optimisation techniques to the application of machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, related topics such as trust and security in collaborative systems provide necessary concepts to enable self-optimising behaviour in SASO systems. In this workshop, we will discuss current research efforts that endeavour the establishment of self-optimising system behaviour. Thereby, a special focus will be set on observable trends and upcoming challenges, resulting from well-known issues of adjacent domains such as evolutionary optimisation or machine learning. The core idea of the cross- layer design is not only to maintain the functionalities associated to the conventional original layers, but also to allow coordination, integration, and joint optimization of protocols. Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) will host also this year a competition to compare the performance of WSN and IoT communication protocols in harsh RF environments. FORMAT: This year's dependability competition will have a new format compared to the past two editions, the most prominent changes being that it will take place remotely over a longer time window, and that it will involve the reporting of multiple events from several nodes. Interested participants should first submit an abstract describing their approach by the competition entry deadline. Accepted contestants will obtain the credentials to remotely access the competition infrastructure and enter the preparation phase, after which each team needs to provide one binary that will be used for the final evaluation. A poster session entirely dedicated to the dependability competition will take place during the evening of the first conference day. All competing teams must present their solution in the poster session and will have the possibility to engage in lively discussions with the other conference attendees. The winners of the competition will be awarded during a dedicated plenary session on the second conference day and will hold a 10-minutes talk presenting their solution, followed by a short discussion. COMPETITION SCENARIO AND EVALUATION PROCEDURE: The competition scenario emulates the operation of a sensor and actuator network monitoring discrete events in an industrial setting where several co-existing wireless devices are crowding the RF spectrum. Recently, usable security receives a growing amount of attention in industry and from academia. This covers, for instance, novel pairing and security schemes for pervasive systems where identity cues are provided from sensor information as well as the discussion of novel sensor modalities or secure processing methodologies. The offensive side includes attacks on existing security mechanisms as well as entropy and statistical analysis of key sequences. It is therefore the goal of this workshop to provide a publication and discussion platform for this growing community in which fundamental problems but also sophisticated approaches are presented and discussed. Thus, we like to encourage practioners and scientists in all stages of their research, from first experiments to readily developed and evaluated systems, to submit their original work to allow a broad discussion with established field experts but also researchers relatively new to the field. Even if work is in a very early stage all submitted work must conform to typical scientific requirements; showing a good overview of the field and the specific area of the context of interest. If the paper is based on a technical system the system should be described and discussed thoroughly. Besides regular papers, we also encourage submission of visionary papers which need not describe completed research but contain ideas new to the field. These may be related to novel and convenient techniques for key generation and pairing, discussions on entropy and statistical properties of sensor- generated random sequences but also novel applications and designs of usable security systems. Yet, several studies have shown that smart devices are frequently co-located in proximity to at least one other device throughout the day, suggesting that devices can potentially collaborate to reduce the effort of resource intensive tasks, e.g., sensing, offloading, networking, storage, etc. However, merging the resources of multiple devices to work together is a tough challenge as it requires a common understanding of the context of each device. In addition, since smart devices function in multiple roles, understanding what really constitutes context becomes difficult as different types of contexts need to be modeled depending on the type of task. - Context information is critical in multi device setups, e.g., for the formation of collaboration groups, and for negotiating responsibilities between the devices. Any misunderstandings in context can thus be extremely counterproductive for the collaboration between devices. Consider, for example, a computational task, e.g., game puzzle, whose execution can be accelerated by dividing computations between two or more devices. To distribute the task, we first need to understand the processing capacity of each device to ensure devices with insufficient resources are not harnessed for this task as they would turn into bottleneck for execution. By detecting the context for harnessing collaborative and opportunistic resources in proximity, it is possible to reduce the cost of executing tasks in the constrained resources of smart devices, and to diffuse the presence of smart devices beyond their existing computing isolated behavior. - The goal of PerCrowd 2018 is to explore the impact of context in collaborative and opportunistic computing. More in detail, the goal of this workshop is to explore the use and effect of contexts on multi-device settings, whose computational behavior can be propagated within a community of devices for optimizing their energy and performance. - Original papers addressing theoretical, practical, and technical aspects of opportunistic and collaborative self-organization of devices are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. It envisions a three-tier architecture that highly distributed and heterogeneous sensor data will be collected through a gateway and be made available to the Internet, and be readily accessible to a wide range of applications. Today, with an ever-increasing number and type of Internet-of-Thing devices, as well as the increasing demands being placed on the end user, sensing platform, and computing and storage infrastructure, more is being asked of engineers, designers, and scientists. Signal processing is playing an increasingly substantial role in this domain, including such general topics as analyzing, summarizing, and protecting signals and information exchanged or shared by connected things. The diversity of these problems requires a more collaborative effort from engineers and scientists from a diverse set of specialties – and yet, there is no one real domain for which to publish and communicate to this general community. The impact to society is massive, including such broad aspects as (i) energy efficiency and accuracy, (ii) security and privacy considerations, (iii) big data application. How will signal processing advance today’s autonomous networked sensor/device into inter-connected ones in an energy efficient, secure and privacy-preserving manner? How to leverage today’s pervasive cloud and network infrastructure to foster more intriguing applications with more demanding signal processing, machine learning techniques? There are clearly new and emerging challenges that need to be addressed. This special issue invites well thought-out tutorial-style surveys and overviews of recent research and development in Internet-of-Things, covering their infrastructure support and applications including edging and cloud computing, wireless networking, mobile computing, ubiquitous sensing, machine learning, security, and automotive navigation. They are now characterized by numerous smart technologies that include sensors, wireless standards, and data analytics. Referred to as Automotive and Aerospace Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), these CPSes are going through massive transformation for increasing the safety, efficiency, and reliability of their operations. These CPSes consist of interconnected systems of heterogeneous components, which are always on, can operate autonomously and interact with the physical world seamlessly through their sensors. For instance, a commercial aircraft or a driverless car includes thousands of interior and exterior sensors and actuators on board to provide more efficient and reliable services. Similarly, many new communication standards have emerged within the last few years to provide communication among these sensors and actuators for various application scenarios. Manufacturers can now collect huge amounts of data through these sensors to apply real-time operations and accurately determine any hardware/software/communication failures. Nonetheless, the cyberspace of these automotive and aerospace CPSes provides numerous opportunities for malicious actors threatening the security and privacy of the vehicles/airplanes and their applications. Unprotected or improperly protected systems can be easily exploited for malicious use. Indeed, the automotive and aerospace CPSes are under the constant threat of an increasing number of cyber attacks through the sensory or wireless channels, hardware, software, or actuators. Given the growing number of security and privacy threats to the automotive and aerospace CPS, securing them against malicious activities is of utmost importance. Otherwise, malfunctioning and insecure CPS devices and applications in automotive and aerospace fields can cause enormous damage to individuals and businesses. Therefore, this special issue of Journal of Hardware and Systems Security (HaSS) focuses on state-of- the-art research in the security and privacy of automotive and aerospace CPS. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of papers that (1) focus primarily on applications and systems and (2) propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. Pervasive computing enables computers to interact with the real world in a ubiquitous and natural manner. Quality of service (QoS), related to transmission delay, bandwidth, or packet loss, has been studied in various building blocks in pervasive computing, e.g., different QoS mechanisms are presented for wireless or wired networks; the notion of computational QoS is used for parallel processing. The emerging pervasive computing paradigm, however, is application-driven and mission-critical and the existing QoS notions to do not really match. Quality of Information (QoI) or Information Quality (IQ) of sensor-originated information relates to the fitness of the information for a sensor-enabled application. Harnessing and optimizing QoI of information derived from sensor networks will be key to bringing together information acquisition and processing systems that support the on-demand information needs of a broad spectrum of smart, sensor-enabled applications such as remote real-time habitat monitoring, utility grid monitoring, environmental control, supply-chain management, health care, machinery control, intelligent highways, military intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR), border control, and hazardous material monitoring, just to mention a few. The proliferation of smartphone has also enabled the possibility to retrieve data also by users on the move. This data collection paradigm is often called crowdsensing, or crowdsourcing, and builds upon the willingness of users to share data together, which eventually gets aggregated to provide novel services to the community. Although fascinating, and potentially disruptive, this paradigm inherently carries a set of technical challenges, at various levels and which should be studied by different research communities. At first, to make the data granularity spread enough, the crowd should be sufficiently large. This means that the application which runs on the users’ device has to be optimized, and should not interfere with the normal activity the users want to perform. This raises the challenge of having smart interfaces which communicate with the user only when necessary, along with the battery efficiency, which plays a crucial role being these devices almost always battery powered. Another technical challenge comes from the heterogeneous data aggregation, as data can be in many different shapes, formats, and labeled in different languages. Hence, automatically linking data that comes from different platforms becomes challenging, and again clustering techniques, supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms have to be developed to perform such task efficiently. Achieving the desired “pervasiveness” of mobile applications, which in turns enable to retrieve data for the community, and the assessment of the QoI itself is key. The objective of this workshop (which is unique venue in its scope for the pervasive community) is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of QoI, QoE, QoS for pervasive computing and crowdsensing in network contexts including wireless, mobile and sensor networks. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of QoI and QoE provisioning in pervasive computing and mobile crowdsensing are solicited. Yet, several studies have shown that smart devices are frequently co-located in proximity to at least one other device throughout the day, suggesting that devices can potentially collaborate to reduce the effort of resource intensive tasks, e.g., sensing, offloading, networking, storage, etc. However, merging the resources of multiple devices to work together is a tough challenge as it requires a common understanding of the context of each device. In addition, since smart devices function in multiple roles, understanding what really constitutes context becomes difficult as different types of contexts need to be modeled depending on the type of task. - Context information is critical in multi device setups, e.g., for the formation of collaboration groups, and for negotiating responsibilities between the devices. Any misunderstandings in context can thus be extremely counterproductive for the collaboration between devices. Consider, for example, a computational task, e.g., game puzzle, whose execution can be accelerated by dividing computations between two or more devices. To distribute the task, we first need to understand the processing capacity of each device to ensure devices with insufficient resources are not harnessed for this task as they would turn into bottleneck for execution. By detecting the context for harnessing collaborative and opportunistic resources in proximity, it is possible to reduce the cost of executing tasks in the constrained resources of smart devices, and to diffuse the presence of smart devices beyond their existing computing isolated behavior. - The goal of PerCrowd 2018 is to explore the impact of context in collaborative and opportunistic computing. More in detail, the goal of this workshop is to explore the use and effect of contexts on multi-device settings, whose computational behavior can be propagated within a community of devices for optimizing their energy and performance. - Original papers addressing theoretical, practical, and technical aspects of opportunistic and collaborative self-organization of devices are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The Doctoral Colloquium will be structured as a series of short presentations by the students followed by individual discussions, feedback, and advice. Students with the most inspiring topics will also be invited to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with SenSys attendees. Current PhD students in the early stages of their career are encouraged to submit a 2-pages research summary describing the work in progress and including a 100-word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. The abstract shall also include a one-paragraph biography of the student, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission.The student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others should be acknowledged. The Doctoral Colloquium committee will review submissions to ensure quality, relevance, and potential benefit from attendance. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to participate in person to the Doctoral Colloquium. There will be no separate registration fee for the Doctoral Colloquium. If the work is accepted, a student may be expected to make clarifications and improvements to the research summary by the camera-ready deadline.
