With growing attention from both academia and industry, industrial Internet of things (IIoT), comprised of a multitude of connected devices, is supposed to monitor, collect, exchange, analyze, and further instantly act on information to intelligently change the industrial device’s behaviour or the industrial environment (e.g., autonomous reaction to unexpected changes in production by effectively detecting failures and triggering maintenance processes). In consideration of this goal, the convergence of sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT is recently identified as an essential component. Specifically, sensor networks are deployed to capture various data in IIoT. Meanwhile, cloud computing platforms are developed to store and process data powerfully in IIoT. Moreover, big data analytics tools are utilized to glean valuable findings from the massive data in IIoT. However, to integrate sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT in a robust way, there are a lot of tough issues to be solved with respect to various aspects (e.g., framework, power efficiency, security, quality of service, etc.). Therefore, this Special Section in IEEE Access aims to solicit original technical papers with novel contributions on the convergence of sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT. Review or survey type articles will also be considered. Submissions should focus on the convergence (i.e., the contemporaneous utilization of at least two of the three technologies – sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT). Submissions that work on the experimental implementation of the convergence of sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT are especially welcome. Crowdsensing/crowdsourcing is a novel data collection paradigm that leverages this vast mobile sensor network, making it possible to expand the scope of research endeavors and address civic issues without requiring the purchase of specialized sensors or the installation and maintenance of network infrastructure. Data collected using such applications may come from unexpected yet interesting and valuable sources and may allow for collecting data in previously inaccessible locations and contexts. This new data collection paradigm introduces several research challenges. Privacy is a primary concern for users who contribute sensitive or personally identifiable information (PII). Incentive mechanisms for participation may be needed to encourage people to volunteer their resources to collect data. Methods are needed for processing large-scale, user-generated data sets into meaningful information, and for assessing and understanding the quality of information to help guide decision-making. Approaches which involve the crowd in such data analysis tasks, with humans serving as a source of semantic information, interpretation, and evaluation of crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data, can also help to build an understanding of the physical, computational, and socio-technical environment. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion, debate, and collaboration focused on ideas, trends, techniques, and recent advances in crowdsensing and crowdsourcing. We invite original research contributions that advance the state of the art as well as position papers that pose a new direction or present a controversial point of view. The safety, real-time and security needs of vehicular systems and their application scenarios make the study of these systems both exciting and challenging. Goal-driven inter-disciplinary collaboration among the automotive industry and academic research community is increasingly seen as necessary. Furthermore, the connected and intelligent vehicle research field has been a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to connected vehicles or autonomous driving vehicles. Many relevant industry standards and consortia are being created to prepare for the maturity of these emerging technologies. The THEME -------------- Ever-growing volume of data and information is being captured from systems, machines and devices and made available to IT systems. The information is processed on-the-fly enabling IT-based management systems to make decisions for real-time control of the manufacturing process. This data capturing and collection for IT systems is often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). When adopted to the industrial automation systems where robustness, reliability, security and latency and jitters are highly desired performance requirements, it is often called Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Industrial communication systems today primarily consist of legacy systems such as HART, Foundation FIELDBUS, CAN and Profibus - well-working and established industry-specific networks installed in millions of systems. In the last decades, there has been a push for IP-based technology which has made Ethernet become a popular communication infrastructure. But to meet the stringent timing requirements of industrial applications, it has been necessary to implement real-time functionality. The communication plays a central role for the availability of all relevant information in real-time. Furthermore, it is indisputable that the mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production require wireless communication systems. The need for wireless communication is steadily increasing in many automation applications. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication protocols that provide bounded latency together with high reliability or energy efficiency. In addition, wireless automation applications need to interact with legacy wired communications systems and provide equivalent levels of security and dependability. Furthermore, industrial settings are highly dynamic environments which call for the ability to adapt to changes in the operating conditions while still not violating the time-constraints of the applications. Given the above scenarios, there is a need to disseminate, streamline and investigate research findings coming from several different application domains, namely from factory automation to industrial process monitoring and control, from traffic, environmental, building and structural monitoring to mobile robotics, from vehicular communication to energy management and healthcare applications. This need is especially driven by the industry interest in enabling large-scale wireless deployments for the sake of flexible, competitive and cost-efficient production. The goal of this special section is to attract papers addressing the main research issues in design, development, adoption and applications of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial Internet-of-Things. IIoT provides a great opportunity to new gains in flexibility and productivity but also challenges as to how to merge existing installations to these new technologies. According to Cisco IBSG (Internet Business Solution Group), more than 50 billion devices are expected to be connected to the internet by 2020 and 20 % of which are from the industry sector. Therefore, integrating the IoT concept and Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) is an attractive choice for industrial process and is mainly needed to reap the full benefits of the IoT . Indeed, IWSNs are an emerging class of WSNs that face specific constraints linked to the particularities of the industrial production. IWSNs bring several advantages and have become inseparable from the manufacturing process due to their low-cost, reliability and robustness in harsh environments, energy efficiency and mobility. IWSNs involve large amount of wireless devices such as sensors for failure monitoring and detection and RFID tags for machine identification. Combining IWSN with IoT may optimize the operational efficiency, automation, maintenance and rationalization. Moreover, it ensures large scale interconnection between machines, computers and people enabling intelligent industrial operations. However, IWSN and IoT integration will need to solve a more complex challenge of combining reliable communications and low- cost computing together. The aim of this Feature Topic (FT) is to address together innovative developments resorting to the state-of-the-art technologies and ideas in areas related to advanced industrial wireless sensor networks and intelligent IoT. The FT is seeking latest findings from research and ongoing projects relevant to industrial networks’ smart integration with IoT. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the eleven previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of position and industry papers as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. We welcome submissions in broadly defined areas of interests (but not limited to): systems of smart sensors and actuators, brand-new applications of sensory devices, smart things, and smart infrastructure, and the underlying research challenges in communication, networking, energy and resources, data management, algorithms and machine intelligence, hardware designs, and deployment on real environments. Student participants will greatly benefit from the Posters and Demos session; it will be a lively forum to present their work and receive early feedback from international leading experts attending the conference. We explicitly encourage submissions of revolutionary concepts, path breaking ideas, and ongoing research prototypes. Major IT industry as well as emerging technology startups are also highly encouraged to participate. SenSys is an ideal venue to present brand-new products, early prototypes, new development platforms, or even ongoing crowdfunding projects of smart platforms and solutions that might catalyse future applications and/or disrupt today’s sensing and networking technologies. Submitted abstracts will be evaluated based on technical merit and innovation as well as their potential to stimulate interesting discussions and exchange of ideas. Authors of accepted abstracts will be given a one-minute slot in a “madness session” during the conference to present their work in front of the conference audience. As with previous editions of SenSys, the best poster and demo will receive an award. All abstracts shall be formatted according to the main conference paper layout. Accepted abstracts will appear in the conference proceedings and the ACM Digital Library. ## Submission Guidelines * Posters and Demos must be submitted as a single PDF containing no more than 2 pages. The summer school intends to deepen knowledge in crowdsourcing in general and crowdsensing of measurement data from mobile users in particular, as well as IoT platforms and protocols. Besides the theoretical background, a core part of the summer school comprises hands-on sessions and group work on concrete research topics supervised by a tutor. The targeted participants are Ph.D. students and early-stage researchers in the fields of Crowdsourcing, QoE, and IoT. Im Internet der Dinge kommunizieren nun Geräte aller Art miteinander. Sie tauschen direkt und über das Internet Mess- und Regeldaten aus. Ein Zweig dieser Entwicklung sind Sensornetze, die eine Schnittstelle zur Beobachtung (Sensorik) und Beeinflussung (Aktorik) von Vorgängen ihrer Umwelt darstellen. Diese Kommunikation benötigt eigene, neuartige Strukturen. Obwohl die Anwendung drängt, sind noch nicht alle Forschungsfragen gelöst. Diese Herausforderungen spiegeln die Grenzfläche und das Zusammenwirken zwischen Messtechnik und technischer Informatik wider. Die Entwicklung dedizierter Lösungen und die Verwendung bestehender Standards stehen hierbei oft im Wettbewerb. In most cases, vehicular accidents are caused by avoidable human error and improper driving practices. With recent advances in sensing technologies, self-driving, connected cars and autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more practicable. The sensor data contribution to the peer to peer (P2P) vehicle sharing system reduces occurrences of road accidents by the use of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) interaction, along with use of sensors for maintaining safe driving distances and pre-empting accidents. Sensor technology in connected cars also improves the overall driving experience by using vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) interaction. This enables warnings and precautions from a network of roadside units, functioning as stationary waypoints and relay warnings, precautions and information regarding availability of crucial services. Such information is particularly beneficial to users in remote areas where it cannot be obtained reliably through conventional communication channels. This Special Issue is focused on sensors and sensor systems for connected vehicles with emphasis on the whole range between modelling and applications. The THEME -------------- Ever-growing volume of data and information is being captured from systems, machines and devices and made available to IT systems. The information is processed on-the-fly enabling IT-based management systems to make decisions for real-time control of the manufacturing process. This data capturing and collection for IT systems is often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). When adopted to the industrial automation systems where robustness, reliability, security and latency and jitters are highly desired performance requirements, it is often called Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Industrial communication systems today primarily consist of legacy systems such as HART, Foundation FIELDBUS, CAN and Profibus - well-working and established industry-specific networks installed in millions of systems. In the last decades, there has been a push for IP-based technology which has made Ethernet become a popular communication infrastructure. But to meet the stringent timing requirements of industrial applications, it has been necessary to implement real-time functionality. The communication plays a central role for the availability of all relevant information in real-time. Furthermore, it is indisputable that the mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production require wireless communication systems. The need for wireless communication is steadily increasing in many automation applications. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication protocols that provide bounded latency together with high reliability or energy efficiency. In addition, wireless automation applications need to interact with legacy wired communications systems and provide equivalent levels of security and dependability. Furthermore, industrial settings are highly dynamic environments which call for the ability to adapt to changes in the operating conditions while still not violating the time-constraints of the applications. Given the above scenarios, there is a need to disseminate, streamline and investigate research findings coming from several different application domains, namely from factory automation to industrial process monitoring and control, from traffic, environmental, building and structural monitoring to mobile robotics, from vehicular communication to energy management and healthcare applications. This need is especially driven by the industry interest in enabling large-scale wireless deployments for the sake of flexible, competitive and cost-efficient production. The goal of this special section is to attract papers addressing the main research issues in design, development, adoption and applications of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial Internet-of-Things. IIoT provides a great opportunity to new gains in flexibility and productivity but also challenges as to how to merge existing installations to these new technologies. Wireless communications in the automation domain impose a number of research challenges, such as communication reliability, bandwidth management, latency issues and energy efficiency. In dynamic environments, very challenging research issues arrive when non-functional properties, such as real-time behavior and adaptability, must be enforced. Unique to this workshop, we will ask for submissions reporting the *failure* of actual embedded sensing system deployments complete with data where possible that can shed insight as to how the problems affected such sensor based systems and their goals. We want the failures, problems and glitches that wasted hours of researcher time; head scratching whilst trying to diagnose and fix subtle or unexpected bugs etc. This workshop focuses on the point at which the simulations and tests done in the lab are taken out into the field, and the previous assumptions fail. The overarching aim is to establish a process that encourages the refinement and development of a new science of sensor systems to enable reliable, maintainable deployments that last the life-times expected of them. The topic is important as the scientific problems that we face with IoT systems strike hard against the limits of our knowledge about how to organise, analyse, and adapt large, loosely-coupled, intercommunicating, and increasingly autonomous, distributed systems. This topic is timely because there is mounting pressure from various industries and government bodies to be able to place their trust in sensing based infrastructures for decision-making. This contention is supported by industry research showing the potential growth of the IoT sector. In this workshop we wish to: Share experiences of real IoT developments “in the wild”. Understand the differences between the theoretical performance of results and real +experiences. Map failure to causes and to explore the more and less obvious causalities. Produce a list of research findings and areas to prioritise for further investigation. The workshop scope includes: Real WSN/IOT etc. deployments that either experienced some, or ended in, failure, complete with data to show what failed and a detailed analysis of the causes of the failure and the lessons learned. Examples of a WSN or other sensor deployments that where either hacked or attacked in a nefarious way, with as much data and details as can be provided. Any practices or tools, along with methodology and description,that have evolved out of sensor system deployment failures that are used to prevent further problems and that can be shown to improve the success rate of Sensor System deployments. Privacy Issues: The organisers of FAILSAFE recognise that some information from deployments may have a sensitive nature or be under a non-disclosure agreement. In these cases, it is acceptable to anonymise any information as long as it does not inhibit the point or issues being presented in the work. In most cases, vehicular accidents are caused by avoidable human error and improper driving practices. With recent advances in sensing technologies, self-driving, connected cars and autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more practicable. The sensor data contribution to the peer to peer (P2P) vehicle sharing system reduces occurrences of road accidents by the use of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) interaction, along with use of sensors for maintaining safe driving distances and pre-empting accidents. Sensor technology in connected cars also improves the overall driving experience by using vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) interaction. This enables warnings and precautions from a network of roadside units, functioning as stationary waypoints and relay warnings, precautions and information regarding availability of crucial services. Such information is particularly beneficial to users in remote areas where it cannot be obtained reliably through conventional communication channels. This Special Issue is focused on sensors and sensor systems for connected vehicles with emphasis on the whole range between modelling and applications. Accordingly, the Internet of Safe Things workshop (or SafeThings, for brevity) seeks to bring researchers and practitioners that are actively exploring system design, modeling, verification, authentication approaches to provide safety guarantees in the Internet of Things (IoT). The workshop welcomes contributions that integrate hardware and software systems provided by disparate vendors, particularly those that have humans in the loop. As safety is inherently linked with the security and privacy, we also seek contributions in security and privacy that address safety concerns. With the SafeThings workshop, we seek to develop a community that systematically dissects the vulnerabilities and risks exposed by these emerging CPSes, and create tools, algorithms, frameworks and systems that help in the development of safe systems. SafeThings workshop covers safety topics as it relates to an individual’s health (physical, mental), the society (air pollution, toxicity, disaster events), or the environment (species preservation, global warming, oil spills). The workshop considers safety from a human perspective, and thus, does not include topics such as thread safety or memory safety in its scope. The 4th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2017) will be held November 8-9, 2017 at Delft, The Netherlands. BuildSys particularly emphasizes approaches that improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, increase performance, and add novel functionality for improving users’ comfort and experience. In recent years, public safety agencies and organizations have started planning to evolve their existing land mobile radio system (LMRS) with long-term evolution (LTE)-based public safety solutions which provides broadband, ubiquitous, and mission-critical voice and data services. Third generation partnership project (3GPP) objective is to preserve the considerable strengths of LTE while also adding features needed for public safety. Moreover, 3GPP Release 13 has recently included the Mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT) functionality into LTE standard. Moreover, 3GPP has identified the device-to-device (D2D) communications as the key driver in emergency situations. The main motivation factor of considering D2D communications for public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) and mission-critical situations is its capability of providing the emergency services by using network-assisted scenario or by acting as a relay to transmit information from one end to another end similar to the ad-hoc network. Core communication technologies and features which will support this network configuration include direct communication mode, MCPTT, full duplex voice system, group calls, talker identification, emergency alerting, and audio quality. The software defined radio (SDR) has the potential to support seamless interoperability by implementing multi-band radios and multi-service radios. Moreover, reinforcement learning schemes can dynamically adjust the network elements by considering quality of service (QoS) requirements of the public safety user s. Thus, this will lay down an interdisciplinary research agenda that combines broadband wireless networks, unmanned air vehicles (UAV) communications, SDR, reinforcement learning, cognitive and self-organizing communications, D2D discovery and communications, stochastic geometry, and energy and time efficient spectrum management schemes, into an integrated and synergistic framework. The main objective of this Special Section in IEEE Access is to bring most recent advances in public safety architecture and communication technologies to the readership of the journal. Advances in the effective integration of networked sensors, building controls, and physical infrastructure are transforming our society, allowing the formation of unprecedented built environments and interlocking physical, social, cyber challenges. Built environments, including buildings and critical urban infrastructure, account for over half of society’s energy consumption and are the mainstay of our nation’s economy, security and health. As a result, there is a broad recognition that systems optimizing explicitly for the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g., by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s quality-of-life. These systems represent the foundation for emerging “smart cities”. The 4th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2017) will be held November 8-9, 2017 at Delft, The Netherlands. We invite original contributions in the areas of intelligent systems and applications for the built environment. BuildSys particularly emphasizes approaches that improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, increase performance, and add novel functionality for improving users’ comfort and experience. BuildSys’ scope is broad, encompassing all systems within the built environment of the urban fabric, including not only buildings but also critical infrastructure systems, such as water, power, lighting, communications, and transportation that will make up the “smart cities” of the future. Submission Types: We solicit three types of original submissions: * Regular papers for oral presentation (10 pages) * Notes papers for oral presentation (4 pages) * Technical posters and demos will be solicited via a separate call (2 pages) Topics: Papers are invited in all emerging aspects of information-driven systems for the built environment. Therefore, integrating the IoT concept and Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) is an attractive choice for industrial process and is mainly needed to reap the full benefits of the IoT . Indeed, IWSNs are an emerging class of WSNs that face specific constraints linked to the particularities of the industrial production. IWSNs bring several advantages and have become inseparable from the manufacturing process due to their low-cost, reliability and robustness in harsh environments, energy efficiency and mobility. IWSNs involve large amount of wireless devices such as sensors for failure monitoring and detection and RFID tags for machine identification. Combining IWSN with IoT may optimize the operational efficiency, automation, maintenance and rationalization. Moreover, it ensures large scale interconnection between machines, computers and people enabling intelligent industrial operations. However, IWSN and IoT integration will need to solve a more complex challenge of combining reliable communications and low- cost computing together. The aim of this Feature Topic (FT) is to address together innovative developments resorting to the state-of-the-art technologies and ideas in areas related to advanced industrial wireless sensor networks and intelligent IoT. The FT is seeking latest findings from research and ongoing projects relevant to industrial networks’ smart integration with IoT. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Intelligent Middleware for IWSN Integration - Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) - Energy Efficient Technologies for Industrial Networks interconnection - Cloud Computing for IoT over Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks - Big Data Analysis and Mining for IIoT *SUBMISSION GUIDELINES* Articles should be tutorial in nature and written in a style comprehensible and accessible to readers outside the specialty of the article. Diese Kommunikation benötigt eigene, neuartige Strukturen. Obwohl die Anwendung drängt, sind noch nicht alle Forschungsfragen gelöst. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the eleven previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in the new directions of challenged networking such as crowdsourcing, mobile cloud/mobile edge/fog computing, IoT, WSN, CPS, mobile data offloading, and challenged SDN. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. As the applications for connected vehicles so does the demand for reliable networking. Large-scale testbeds are running or planned in different parts of the world, while multiple discussions are taking place at different levels and in different forums about the next generation of vehicular networks. In a WSN, a large number of sensor nodes are deployed and networked to monitor or survey targeted area, such that the interested data can be sensed, processed, stored and collected. Through WSNs, we are able to bridge the physical word and the cyber space, which composes the foundation for developing new smart applications. Many potential applications of WSNs have been exploited in the fields of environmental engineering, healthcare, industry, military applications, smart home, and green buildings etc. To enable the pervasive deployment of WSNs, the biggest stumbling block is the contradiction between the various functionalities demanded by applications and the limited energy supply for sensor nodes. Such a situation is getting worse, especially considering the increasing network scale. Therefore, in this special issue, we look at WSNs, mainly from the perspective of green computing. On one hand, we expect to design energy-saving (or –free) protocols cross different system layers, to prolong the network lifetime as far as possible. Specifically, to practice WSNs in real applications, we are supposed to achieve a tradeoff between system performance and energy efficiency, through adapting sensing/networking functionalities to energy budget. On the other hand, we can resort to seeking new techniques to sustainably supply energy to sensor nodes. For example, sensor nodes equipped with certain mechanisms can harvest energy from surrounding circumstance, or we can rely on dedicated devices to periodically charge the sensor nodes (if they are re-chargeable). The above threads (or the joint optimizations cross them) are of great significance to improve the sustainability and performance of WSNs. Therefore, it is highly worthy to extensively investigate how we run a WSN in a green fashion. " Internet of Things (IoT): Operating System, Applications and Protocols Design, and Validation Techniques" Submission Deadline: June 30, 2017 THE THEME ------------------ Internet of Things (IoT) connects durable goods, cars and trucks, industrial and utility components, and sensors to Internet with data analytics capabilities. IoT is flourishing due to technology advancements. The key features of IoT Operating Systems (OSs) are modularity, energy-efficient scheduler, hardware support, architecture, network stacks, reliability, interoperability, unified APIs, generic interfaces, and real-time capabilities. The applications for IoT service scenarios are diverse and challenging. These range from smart energy, transportation, etc. to big data analysis. The integration of all these applications is essential to eventually make everything smart. The memory and energy efficient IoT protocols are desirable. The validation of IoT protocols and applications is a key to success. Therefore, an IoT OS requires to support not only a huge variety of heterogeneous hardware, but also simulators and emulators as well as testbed facilities Further, it should provide th e capability to perform small scale to large scale testing with heterogeneous physical devices and communication technologies. The availability of variety of IoT OSs, low-cost IoT devices, heterogeneous telecommunications technologies, big data technologies and standardization is a key of success for IoT deployment. To fully exploit these technological advancements, there exists many issues related to applications, protocols, testing, interoperability; time bounded big data processing and analysis, heterogeneous communication technologies and platform support. This Special Issue focuses on the most recent advancement in interdisciplinary research areas encompassing IoT OSs, applications and protocols design, development, and validation domain. This Special Issue will bring together researchers from diverse fields such as communication engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering, bio-informatics and mathematics. Through this Special Issue, we invite researchers from industry, academia and government organizations to discuss innovative ideas and contributions, demonstrate results and share standardization efforts on the IoT OSs and related areas. Authors should select “IoT:OS,App,Proto,Valid”, from the “Choose Article Type” pull-down menu during the submission process at EVISE. All contributions must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. A submission based on one or more papers that appeared elsewhere has to comprise major value-added extensions over what appeared previously (at least 30% new material). Authors are requested to attach to the submitted paper their relevant, previously published articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version.
