Connected vehicles have been envisioned to provide enabling key technologies to enhance transportation efficiency, reducing incidents, improving safety, and mitigating the impacts of traffic congestion. The potential of connected vehicles has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs around the globe. In particular, radio spectrum has been allocated in North America, Europe, and Japan for the dedicated short range communications (DSRC) to facilitate intelligent transportation. The United States Department of Transportation has been taking steps to mandate car makers to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technologies for light vehicles for a safer driving experience. Recently, we have also witnessed 5G connected vehicular successful test-bed in South Korea. To be precise, we are on the verge of deploying the 1st generation of wirelessly connected vehicles. The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging technologies for connecting vehicles, the latest development in standardization and regulation, as well as the potential services and applications for connecting vehicles. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under consideration by any other journals. This arises the fast development of Positioning, Navigation and Location Based Services (PNLBS), and leads them become much broader than just providing a location or navigation. These positioning technologies and their enabling integrated systems have been promoted into the IoT world such as asset tracking, autonomous parking, virtual reality, context awareness, condition monitoring, geolocation, smart manufacturing, as well as smart cities. In fact, PNLBS have become indispensable to the future of IoT. On the other hand, IoT systems create limitless possibilities for PNLBS, due to their sophisticated cloud computing technologies, powerful big data analysis, and embedded multi-sensors. The aim of IoT architectures for provisioning of PNLBS is to design an accurate, low-cost, low-power, reliable, and scalable solution for cutting-edge applications. To achieve this goal, several challenges should be addressed, such as improving positioning accuracy, reducing the power cost, handling to track millions of devices as well as transmitting and processing big data. Therefore, the research is required to conduct on not only PNLBS algorithms, but also new IoT architectures and chip design technologies. Extensive research efforts have been paid either on PNLBS algorithms, or IoT architectures and chip design. However, research efforts on their combination remain open and require further investigations, such as how to accurately track millions of devices by consuming low power, how to use IoT technique (e.g., crowdsourcing) to automatically generate wireless fingerprinting database for positioning, how to design low-power positioning chip/system suitable for IoT architectures, etc. The goal of this Special Issue is to solicit the latest unpublished work on PNLBS for IoT. Crowdsensing/crowdsourcing is a novel data collection paradigm that leverages this vast mobile sensor network, making it possible to expand the scope of research endeavors and address civic issues without requiring the purchase of specialized sensors or the installation and maintenance of network infrastructure. Data collected using such applications may come from unexpected yet interesting and valuable sources and may allow for collecting data in previously inaccessible locations and contexts. This new data collection paradigm introduces several research challenges. Privacy is a primary concern for users who contribute sensitive or personally identifiable information (PII). Incentive mechanisms for participation may be needed to encourage people to volunteer their resources to collect data. Methods are needed for processing large-scale, user-generated data sets into meaningful information, and for assessing and understanding the quality of information to help guide decision-making. Approaches which involve the crowd in such data analysis tasks, with humans serving as a source of semantic information, interpretation, and evaluation of crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data, can also help to build an understanding of the physical, computational, and socio-technical environment. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion, debate, and collaboration focused on ideas, trends, techniques, and recent advances in crowdsensing and crowdsourcing. We invite original research contributions that advance the state of the art as well as position papers that pose a new direction or present a controversial point of view. The key themes of this workshop are two-fold: Connected Vehicles: Based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular networks, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular applications that improve road safety, energy efficiency, optimizes traffic flow, as well as for infotainment purposes. Intelligent Vehicles: As vehicles are equipped with more sensing and computing capabilities, vehicles become more intelligent and are able to accomplish a number of challenging tasks including autonomous driving. We are currently witnessing the pursuit of high-performing, reliable, scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving connected and automated vehicle technologies, as well as associated mobility services. These ongoing innovations present an extraordinary challenge for the research community. The safety, real-time and security needs of vehicular systems and their application scenarios make the study of these systems both exciting and challenging. Goal-driven inter-disciplinary collaboration among the automotive industry and academic research community is increasingly seen as necessary. Furthermore, the connected and intelligent vehicle research field has been a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to connected vehicles or autonomous driving vehicles. Many relevant industry standards and consortia are being created to prepare for the maturity of these emerging technologies. CarSys 2017 brings together researchers from these initiatives around the world to chart the way forward in this rapidly evolving field. The THEME -------------- Ever-growing volume of data and information is being captured from systems, machines and devices and made available to IT systems. The information is processed on-the-fly enabling IT-based management systems to make decisions for real-time control of the manufacturing process. This data capturing and collection for IT systems is often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). When adopted to the industrial automation systems where robustness, reliability, security and latency and jitters are highly desired performance requirements, it is often called Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Industrial communication systems today primarily consist of legacy systems such as HART, Foundation FIELDBUS, CAN and Profibus - well-working and established industry-specific networks installed in millions of systems. In the last decades, there has been a push for IP-based technology which has made Ethernet become a popular communication infrastructure. But to meet the stringent timing requirements of industrial applications, it has been necessary to implement real-time functionality. The communication plays a central role for the availability of all relevant information in real-time. Furthermore, it is indisputable that the mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production require wireless communication systems. The need for wireless communication is steadily increasing in many automation applications. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication protocols that provide bounded latency together with high reliability or energy efficiency. In addition, wireless automation applications need to interact with legacy wired communications systems and provide equivalent levels of security and dependability. Furthermore, industrial settings are highly dynamic environments which call for the ability to adapt to changes in the operating conditions while still not violating the time-constraints of the applications. Given the above scenarios, there is a need to disseminate, streamline and investigate research findings coming from several different application domains, namely from factory automation to industrial process monitoring and control, from traffic, environmental, building and structural monitoring to mobile robotics, from vehicular communication to energy management and healthcare applications. This need is especially driven by the industry interest in enabling large-scale wireless deployments for the sake of flexible, competitive and cost-efficient production. The goal of this special section is to attract papers addressing the main research issues in design, development, adoption and applications of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial Internet-of-Things. IIoT provides a great opportunity to new gains in flexibility and productivity but also challenges as to how to merge existing installations to these new technologies. Combining IWSN with IoT may optimize the operational efficiency, automation, maintenance and rationalization. Moreover, it ensures large scale interconnection between machines, computers and people enabling intelligent industrial operations. However, IWSN and IoT integration will need to solve a more complex challenge of combining reliable communications and low- cost computing together. The aim of this Feature Topic (FT) is to address together innovative developments resorting to the state-of-the-art technologies and ideas in areas related to advanced industrial wireless sensor networks and intelligent IoT. The FT is seeking latest findings from research and ongoing projects relevant to industrial networks’ smart integration with IoT. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the eleven previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of position and industry papers as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. The summer school intends to deepen knowledge in crowdsourcing in general and crowdsensing of measurement data from mobile users in particular, as well as IoT platforms and protocols. Besides the theoretical background, a core part of the summer school comprises hands-on sessions and group work on concrete research topics supervised by a tutor. The targeted participants are Ph.D. students and early-stage researchers in the fields of Crowdsourcing, QoE, and IoT. Ein Zweig dieser Entwicklung sind Sensornetze, die eine Schnittstelle zur Beobachtung (Sensorik) und Beeinflussung (Aktorik) von Vorgängen ihrer Umwelt darstellen. Diese Kommunikation benötigt eigene, neuartige Strukturen. Obwohl die Anwendung drängt, sind noch nicht alle Forschungsfragen gelöst. In most cases, vehicular accidents are caused by avoidable human error and improper driving practices. With recent advances in sensing technologies, self-driving, connected cars and autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more practicable. The sensor data contribution to the peer to peer (P2P) vehicle sharing system reduces occurrences of road accidents by the use of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) interaction, along with use of sensors for maintaining safe driving distances and pre-empting accidents. Sensor technology in connected cars also improves the overall driving experience by using vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) interaction. This enables warnings and precautions from a network of roadside units, functioning as stationary waypoints and relay warnings, precautions and information regarding availability of crucial services. Such information is particularly beneficial to users in remote areas where it cannot be obtained reliably through conventional communication channels. This Special Issue is focused on sensors and sensor systems for connected vehicles with emphasis on the whole range between modelling and applications. The THEME -------------- Ever-growing volume of data and information is being captured from systems, machines and devices and made available to IT systems. The information is processed on-the-fly enabling IT-based management systems to make decisions for real-time control of the manufacturing process. This data capturing and collection for IT systems is often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). When adopted to the industrial automation systems where robustness, reliability, security and latency and jitters are highly desired performance requirements, it is often called Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Industrial communication systems today primarily consist of legacy systems such as HART, Foundation FIELDBUS, CAN and Profibus - well-working and established industry-specific networks installed in millions of systems. In the last decades, there has been a push for IP-based technology which has made Ethernet become a popular communication infrastructure. But to meet the stringent timing requirements of industrial applications, it has been necessary to implement real-time functionality. The communication plays a central role for the availability of all relevant information in real-time. Furthermore, it is indisputable that the mobility of objects involved in the production as well as the necessary flexibility of the production require wireless communication systems. The need for wireless communication is steadily increasing in many automation applications. In order to fully exploit the potentials offered by wireless communication for monitoring, control and automation applications, there is a further need for time-constrained communication protocols that provide bounded latency together with high reliability or energy efficiency. In addition, wireless automation applications need to interact with legacy wired communications systems and provide equivalent levels of security and dependability. Furthermore, industrial settings are highly dynamic environments which call for the ability to adapt to changes in the operating conditions while still not violating the time-constraints of the applications. Given the above scenarios, there is a need to disseminate, streamline and investigate research findings coming from several different application domains, namely from factory automation to industrial process monitoring and control, from traffic, environmental, building and structural monitoring to mobile robotics, from vehicular communication to energy management and healthcare applications. This need is especially driven by the industry interest in enabling large-scale wireless deployments for the sake of flexible, competitive and cost-efficient production. The goal of this special section is to attract papers addressing the main research issues in design, development, adoption and applications of Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks and Industrial Internet-of-Things. IIoT provides a great opportunity to new gains in flexibility and productivity but also challenges as to how to merge existing installations to these new technologies. Unique to this workshop, we will ask for submissions reporting the *failure* of actual embedded sensing system deployments complete with data where possible that can shed insight as to how the problems affected such sensor based systems and their goals. We want the failures, problems and glitches that wasted hours of researcher time; head scratching whilst trying to diagnose and fix subtle or unexpected bugs etc. This workshop focuses on the point at which the simulations and tests done in the lab are taken out into the field, and the previous assumptions fail. The overarching aim is to establish a process that encourages the refinement and development of a new science of sensor systems to enable reliable, maintainable deployments that last the life-times expected of them. The topic is important as the scientific problems that we face with IoT systems strike hard against the limits of our knowledge about how to organise, analyse, and adapt large, loosely-coupled, intercommunicating, and increasingly autonomous, distributed systems. This topic is timely because there is mounting pressure from various industries and government bodies to be able to place their trust in sensing based infrastructures for decision-making. This contention is supported by industry research showing the potential growth of the IoT sector. In this workshop we wish to: Share experiences of real IoT developments “in the wild”. Understand the differences between the theoretical performance of results and real +experiences. Map failure to causes and to explore the more and less obvious causalities. Produce a list of research findings and areas to prioritise for further investigation. The workshop scope includes: Real WSN/IOT etc. deployments that either experienced some, or ended in, failure, complete with data to show what failed and a detailed analysis of the causes of the failure and the lessons learned. Examples of a WSN or other sensor deployments that where either hacked or attacked in a nefarious way, with as much data and details as can be provided. Any practices or tools, along with methodology and description,that have evolved out of sensor system deployment failures that are used to prevent further problems and that can be shown to improve the success rate of Sensor System deployments. Privacy Issues: The organisers of FAILSAFE recognise that some information from deployments may have a sensitive nature or be under a non-disclosure agreement. In these cases, it is acceptable to anonymise any information as long as it does not inhibit the point or issues being presented in the work. In most cases, vehicular accidents are caused by avoidable human error and improper driving practices. With recent advances in sensing technologies, self-driving, connected cars and autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more practicable. The sensor data contribution to the peer to peer (P2P) vehicle sharing system reduces occurrences of road accidents by the use of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) interaction, along with use of sensors for maintaining safe driving distances and pre-empting accidents. Sensor technology in connected cars also improves the overall driving experience by using vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) interaction. The workshop welcomes contributions that integrate hardware and software systems provided by disparate vendors, particularly those that have humans in the loop. As safety is inherently linked with the security and privacy, we also seek contributions in security and privacy that address safety concerns. With the SafeThings workshop, we seek to develop a community that systematically dissects the vulnerabilities and risks exposed by these emerging CPSes, and create tools, algorithms, frameworks and systems that help in the development of safe systems. SafeThings workshop covers safety topics as it relates to an individual’s health (physical, mental), the society (air pollution, toxicity, disaster events), or the environment (species preservation, global warming, oil spills). In recent years, public safety agencies and organizations have started planning to evolve their existing land mobile radio system (LMRS) with long-term evolution (LTE)-based public safety solutions which provides broadband, ubiquitous, and mission-critical voice and data services. Third generation partnership project (3GPP) objective is to preserve the considerable strengths of LTE while also adding features needed for public safety. Moreover, 3GPP Release 13 has recently included the Mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT) functionality into LTE standard. Moreover, 3GPP has identified the device-to-device (D2D) communications as the key driver in emergency situations. The main motivation factor of considering D2D communications for public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) and mission-critical situations is its capability of providing the emergency services by using network-assisted scenario or by acting as a relay to transmit information from one end to another end similar to the ad-hoc network. Core communication technologies and features which will support this network configuration include direct communication mode, MCPTT, full duplex voice system, group calls, talker identification, emergency alerting, and audio quality. The software defined radio (SDR) has the potential to support seamless interoperability by implementing multi-band radios and multi-service radios. Moreover, reinforcement learning schemes can dynamically adjust the network elements by considering quality of service (QoS) requirements of the public safety user s. Thus, this will lay down an interdisciplinary research agenda that combines broadband wireless networks, unmanned air vehicles (UAV) communications, SDR, reinforcement learning, cognitive and self-organizing communications, D2D discovery and communications, stochastic geometry, and energy and time efficient spectrum management schemes, into an integrated and synergistic framework. The main objective of this Special Section in IEEE Access is to bring most recent advances in public safety architecture and communication technologies to the readership of the journal. This Special Section will provide the opportunity for research communities across the globe to share their ideas on these newly emerging fields of public safety communications. IWSNs bring several advantages and have become inseparable from the manufacturing process due to their low-cost, reliability and robustness in harsh environments, energy efficiency and mobility. IWSNs involve large amount of wireless devices such as sensors for failure monitoring and detection and RFID tags for machine identification. Combining IWSN with IoT may optimize the operational efficiency, automation, maintenance and rationalization. Moreover, it ensures large scale interconnection between machines, computers and people enabling intelligent industrial operations. However, IWSN and IoT integration will need to solve a more complex challenge of combining reliable communications and low- cost computing together. The aim of this Feature Topic (FT) is to address together innovative developments resorting to the state-of-the-art technologies and ideas in areas related to advanced industrial wireless sensor networks and intelligent IoT. The FT is seeking latest findings from research and ongoing projects relevant to industrial networks’ smart integration with IoT. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch "Sensornetze" - FGSN 2017* Das Stichwort “Digitalisierung” ist heute allgegenwärtig. Ständig verfügbare Kommunikation hat zu einer Explosion der Möglichkeiten geführt. Im Internet der Dinge kommunizieren nun Geräte aller Art miteinander. Sie tauschen direkt und über das Internet Mess- und Regeldaten aus. Ein Zweig dieser Entwicklung sind Sensornetze, die eine Schnittstelle zur Beobachtung (Sensorik) und Beeinflussung (Aktorik) von Vorgängen ihrer Umwelt darstellen. Diese Kommunikation benötigt eigene, neuartige Strukturen. Obwohl die Anwendung drängt, sind noch nicht alle Forschungsfragen gelöst. Diese Herausforderungen spiegeln die Grenzfläche und das Zusammenwirken zwischen Messtechnik und technischer Informatik wider. Die Entwicklung dedizierter Lösungen und die Verwendung bestehender Standards stehen hierbei oft im Wettbewerb. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing, challenged IoT. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the eleven previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in the new directions of challenged networking such as crowdsourcing, mobile cloud/mobile edge/fog computing, IoT, WSN, CPS, mobile data offloading, and challenged SDN. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative, out-of-the-box, solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. While enabling technologies have evolved into mature and widely available solutions, insights gathered from real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce and many practical issues in building sensor network applications persist. A thorough understanding of these challenges from a practical/systems perspective is still necessary. This especially applies to insights from the areas of hardware platforms of sensor and actuator nodes, their operating systems, the networking of nodes, and fresh perspectives from field trials and applications. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensing network research communities working on embedded sensing systems to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and the future development of wireless sensing in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realms of wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, smart spaces, machine-to-machine communication, the Internet of Things, and all related disciplines.
