Indeed, the recent emergence of the D2D paradigm paves the way towards improving the performance of cellular networks by means of novel opportunistic architectures, e.g, based on LTE-Direct and WiFi-Direct technologies. This special issue will focus on theoretical research contributions presenting new techniques, concepts or analyses, and applied contributions reporting on experiences and experiments with D2D-based offloading systems. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. Challenged networking has also found applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud computing, and opportunistic and participatory sensing. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and LTE’s D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the nine previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work, including studies of real deployment. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo submissions. All papers shall be forward looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Next generation mobile and wireless communications systems will have to respond to an avalanche of traffic, an explosion of the number of connected devices and a large diversity of use cases and requirements. One of the key enabling technologies at the heart of the 5G systems is Device-to-Device communications. Devices being close to each other can activate direct links and bypass the base station (BS) or access point (AP) by either using cellular communications resources or using alternative radio technologies such as Wi-Fi. The D2D communications paradigm holds, indeed, the promise of to overcome the limitations of conventional cellular systems with very high bit rates, low delay, and low power consumption. There are a number of applications where D2D communications can provide significant ! improvements. For example, it can be useful to provide mobile data offloading for proximity based applications, to extend the network coverage, or supporting content sharing among users and group oriented services. However, there are many issues still waiting for a solution before a widespread use of D2D communications in next 5G systems is granted. These include network and device discovery, radio resource allocation and resource management, non-network-assisted direct links formation, capacity evaluation. Moreover, some research aspects, such as mobility management, multicast and broadcast communications and radio access procedures for D2D received little attention so far. Purpose of this special issue is to promote novel solutions for design and modeling of D2D communications as enabling technology for future 5G systems. The envisioned paradigm will need to address significant complexity. On the one hand, billions of smart objects will be immersed in the environment, sensing, interacting, and cooperating with each other to enable efficient services that will bring tangible benefits to the environment, the economy and the society as a whole. On the other hand, they will be extremely diverse and heterogeneous in terms of resource capabilities, lifespan and communication technologies, further complicating the scenario. As a result, new problems and challenges arise spanning different areas: architecture, communication, addressing, discovery, data and network management, power and energy storage, security and privacy, to cite a few. Classic Internet approaches are not sufficient to solve these unprecedented issues, and need to be revised to address the complex requirements imposed by IoT. This paves the way for the development of intelligent algorithms, novel network paradigms and new services. The objective of this special issue is to seek high-quality and unpublished papers that push the research in all the facets of IoT. Contributions may present and solve open technical problems, integrate novel solutions efficiently, and focus on the performance evaluation and comparison with existing standards. Theoretical as well as experimental studies for typical IoT use cases (e.g., smart city, smart home/building, smart grid, transportation, eHealth/mHealth) are encouraged. High-quality review and survey papers are welcomed. The primary role of ICT in enabling this vision is to keep the decision makers, the stake holders and the citizen constantly updated with fresh information collected around the city. To accomplish this task, next generation cities, will be populated with billions of heterogeneous devices ranging from tiny communicating objects (e.g., actuators, sensors, tags) able to interact with the surrounding environment and remote systems, to high-end nodes (e.g., data centers, workstations) capable of complex operations and to process a huge amount of information. In this futuristic scenario a very special role is played by citizens with their smartphones, tablets and portable devices. They are constantly connected with whatever surroundings them and they are formidable information consumers. Their role however does not end here. Smartphones, in fact, are very powerful devices with constantly increasing processing, communication and sensing capabilities and very recently, a large plethora of proposals have emerged to leverage those capabilities to contribute to the information production process. For instance, citizens roaming around the city may be considered as mobile probes which, by making uses of cyber and physical data accessible by smartphones, can analyze the situation and produce reports to the community. Furthermore smarthphones can actively contributing in creating the communication infrastructure by forwarding data coming from surrounding devices. All in all, cities are going to became a new complex ecosystem which has the potentiality to offer many amazing feature and support innovative application. Unfortunately, fully exploiting, managing and accessing that ecosystem are still far to be fully viable and their fulfillment surely poses a formidable challenge. This Special Issue aims to solicit contributions on novel algorithms, methodological studies and experimentations on how to address the formerly highlighted issues. Specifically on how devise a city-wide networking infrastructure capable to efficiently guarantee communication in the new envisaged ecosystem, to manage the complexity of heterogeneous devices and access technologies, and to guarantee robust, ubiquitous, and secure connectivity over the urban environments. At the same time, beside studying the issues of the city-wide infrastructure deployment, the workshop aims to investigate the potential provided by the end-users devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) when augmented in order to turn them into active components of the smart-city ecosystem, instead of mere connection end-points. Such a potential includes the possibility to extend the network access in a pervasive way, to provide ubiquitous computing services, and to favor the emergence of "collectivity intelligence behaviors" through collaboration and direct communication among devices. Domain-specific sensing deployments in scenarios like industrial settings and home automation are becoming more and more ubiquitous, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms which allow for the seamless integration of sensing devices into everyday environments. At the same time, data gathered through wireless sensor network deployments empower applications in the emerging domains of smart cities and smart infrastructures. While enabling technologies have evolved into mature and widely available solutions, insights gathered from real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce and many practical issues in building sensor network applications persist. A thorough understanding of these challenges from a practical/systems perspective is still necessary. This especially applies to insights from the areas of hardware platforms of sensor and actuator nodes, their operating systems, the networking of nodes, and fresh perspectives from field trials and applications. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensing network research communities working on embedded sensing systems to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and the future development of wireless sensing in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realms of wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, smart spaces, the Internet of Things, and all related disciplines. Objects need to be smart, with enough intelligence and sensors to perform required operations. They must be able to wirelessly communicate with other nodes or remote centre in their network, exchanging information and receiving instructions in a reliable and secure way. They must be autonomous, capable of managing the energy resources in order to extend their lifetime span. Considered objects may include everything from lightweight sensors to smart-gadgets like smartphones and wearable devices. The increased smartness of the participating objects is crucial to solve the issues derived from the required cooperation and possibly unpredictable and intense mobility. The objects can move in many different ways, covering transportation means from (i) terrestrial, like cars or trains, to (ii) aerial like drones or planes, and (iii) underwater ships. But even static objects should be flexible enough to efficiently handle on-off patterns imposed for energy savings. The SMARTOBJECTS workshop focuses on experiences with the design, implementation, deployment, operation and evaluation of novel communication approaches and systems for smart objects in the emerging cooperative environments. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. Challenged networking has also found applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud computing, and opportunistic and participatory sensing. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and LTE’s D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the nine previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work, including studies of real deployment. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo submissions. All papers shall be forward looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Starting as a niche application over Wi-Fi, they can now be found in mainstream technologies like Bluetooth LE, LTE Direct and Wireless LANs, and have become the cornerstone of upcoming networking paradigms including mesh and sensor networks, cloud networks, vehicular networks, disruption tolerant and opportunistic networks, and in-body networks. The challenges of this exciting research field are numerous. Examples include how to make smart use of these novel technologies when multiple technologies or a mix of permanent services and on-demand networking opportunities are available to a network node, how to provide robust services in highly dynamic environments, how to efficiently employ and operate heavily resource-constrained devices, and how to develop robust and lightweight algorithms for self-organization and adaptation. WONS, now numbering twelve editions, has established itself as a high quality forum to address these and related challenges. After a one-year break, WONS is able to continue to provide a global platform for rich interactions between experts in their fields, discussing innovative contributions in a stimulating environment. This announcement solicits original contributions of high-quality research providing novel insights on all aspects of wireless on-demand networks and systems; from protocol and network design, modeling, performance evaluation, profitability models, energy efficiency, QoS models and mechanisms, practical implementations, service level aspects, application use-cases, to the integration of multiple wireless network technologies. Domain-specific sensing deployments in scenarios like industrial settings and home automation are becoming more and more ubiquitous, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms which allow for the seamless integration of sensing devices into everyday environments. At the same time, data gathered through wireless sensor network deployments empower applications in the emerging domains of smart cities and smart infrastructures. While enabling technologies have evolved into mature and widely available solutions, insights gathered from real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce and many practical issues in building sensor network applications persist. A thorough understanding of these challenges from a practical/systems perspective is still necessary. This especially applies to insights from the areas of hardware platforms of sensor and actuator nodes, their operating systems, the networking of nodes, and fresh perspectives from field trials and applications. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensing network research communities working on embedded sensing systems to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and the future development of wireless sensing in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realms of wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, smart spaces, the Internet of Things, and all related disciplines. Objects need to be smart, with enough intelligence and sensors to perform required operations. Considered objects may include everything from lightweight sensors to smart-gadgets like smartphones and wearable devices. The increased smartness of the participating objects is crucial to solve the issues derived from the required cooperation and possibly unpredictable and intense mobility. The objects can move in many different ways, covering transportation means from (i) terrestrial, like cars or trains, to (ii) aerial like drones or planes, and (iii) underwater ships. But even static objects should be flexible enough to efficiently handle on-off patterns imposed for energy savings. The SMARTOBJECTS workshop focuses on experiences with the design, implementation, deployment, operation and evaluation of novel communication approaches and systems for smart objects in the emerging cooperative environments. To ignite discussions, we see two (rather obvious) topics, that we think are important and interesting: 1) considering all the public personal data by all sorts of people, we wonder how good */inference attacks/* can actually get, even on people who don't publish (a lot of) information about themselves - directly related of course is the question, if we can find new */privacy metrics,/* and - if there are ways to encounter such attacks, without diminishing the utility for the users (too much). And 2) on a related note we want to further explore ideas towards */privacy-preserving recommenders/*. We will organize this event as a "traditional" scientific workshop soliciting submissions, which will be reviewed and subsequently published, to make it easier for the academic audiences to convince their funding entity of its importance ;-) - but we really mainly want to engage in discussions, may be fostering some future collaborations, as well. I'm attaching the usual Call for Papers - and I hope, of course, that we will receive some interesting submissions (to make the official part interesting - so help in advertising is appreciated). We will accept both novel scientific contributions, but also datasets and replication studies. These types of networks consist of a number of autonomous or semi-autonomous wireless nodes/objects moving with diverse patterns and speeds while communicating via several radio interfaces simultaneously. Examples of such objects include smartphones and other user mobile devices, robots, cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, sensors, actuators, etc., which are connected in some way to each other and to the Internet. With every object acting as a networking node generating, relaying and/or absorbing data, these networks may serve as a supplementary infrastructure for the provision of smart, ubiquitous, highly contextualized and customized services and applications available anytime-anywhere-anyhow. Achieving this will require global interworking and interoperability amongst objects, which is not typical today. To overcome current shortcomings, a number of research challenges have to be addressed in this area, ranging from initial conceptualization and modelling, to protocols and architectures engineering, and development of suitable tools, applications and services, and to the elaboration of realistic use-case scenarios by taking into account also corresponding societal and economical aspects. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. Challenged networking has also found applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud computing, and opportunistic and participatory sensing. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and LTE’s D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the nine previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work, including studies of real deployment. The rise of mobile traffic analytics is fostered by an unprecedented availability of data, collected by mobile operators through probes deployed at the access and core networks, or gathered by dedicated research initiatives via monitoring apps running on users’ smartphones. Both approaches can harvest information about large populations, from hundreds to millions individuals, over long time periods, from weeks to years. The richness of mobile traffic datasets is paramount to research in a wide range of disciplines, including, e.g., sociology, transportations, statistical physics, epidemiology, and – of course – networking. However, several technical challenges need to be tackled to release the full potential of such data sources, including the assessment of statistical robustness of inferred knowledge, the overcoming of scalability issues, and the consideration for data access limitations imposed by privacy regulations that tend to reduce data usability. The aim of this Special Issue is to gather contributions presenting state-of-the-art research dealing with all facets of mobile traffic analytics. We expect submissions to present quantitative evaluations carried out on substantial real-world datasets of mobile traffic. Here, we intend the term "traffic" in its wider acceptation. We thus invite works on data collected via, e.g., Call Detail Records (CDR), access (RNC) and core (MSC, GGSN/PGW) network probes, or smartphone monitoring apps; data can be limited to mobility patterns, it can concern traditional user-to-user mobile services (i.e., calling and texting), it can focus on the mobile data traffic demand (at any granularity, from throughput volumes to the precise services and protocols employed), or it can contain any combination of such information types. We especially encourage the submission of interdisciplinary research works at the interface between networking and disciplines such as those mentioned above. Special attention will be deserved to findings and results that have practical applications in terms of technological innovation, sustainable development, data and network management, and mobile services. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. Examples of challenged networks include deployments in rural and remote areas, networks to support emergency response operations, inter-planetary networks, sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, underwater networks, road vehicle networks, and, more recently, networks of micro aerial vehicles. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. Challenged networking has also found applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud computing, and opportunistic and participatory sensing. The increasing availability of wireless communications in embedded devices as well as integration of technologies such as Wi-Fi direct on Android platforms and LTE’s D2D (device-to-device) communication on general purpose mobile devices, will further push the development of challenged networking solutions. Challenged networking has also chartered new directions for inter-disciplinary research, e.g., applying findings from social networks and network science. This workshop builds on the success of the nine previous CHANTS workshops, and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work, including studies of real deployment. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo submissions. All papers shall be forward looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. The primary role of ICT in enabling this vision is to keep the decision makers, the stake holders and the citizen constantly updated with fresh information collected around the city. To accomplish this task, next generation cities, will be populated with billions of heterogeneous devices ranging from tiny communicating objects (e.g., actuators, sensors, tags) able to interact with the surrounding environment and remote systems, to high-end nodes (e.g., data centers, workstations) capable of complex operations and to process a huge amount of information. In this futuristic scenario a very special role is played by citizens with their smartphones, tablets and portable devices. They are constantly connected with whatever surroundings them and they are formidable information consumers. Their role however does not end here. Smartphones, in fact, are very powerful devices with constantly increasing processing, communication and sensing capabilities and very recently, a large plethora of proposals have emerged to leverage those capabilities to contribute to the information production process. For instance, citizens roaming around the city may be considered as mobile probes which, by making uses of cyber and physical data accessible by smartphones, can analyze the situation and produce reports to the community. Furthermore smarthphones can actively contributing in creating the communication infrastructure by forwarding data coming from surrounding devices. All in all, cities are going to became a new complex ecosystem which has the potentiality to offer many amazing feature and support innovative application. Unfortunately, fully exploiting, managing and accessing that ecosystem are still far to be fully viable and their fulfillment surely poses a formidable challenge. This Special Issue aims to solicit contributions on novel algorithms, methodological studies and experimentations on how to address the formerly highlighted issues. Specifically on how devise a city-wide networking infrastructure capable to efficiently guarantee communication in the new envisaged ecosystem, to manage the complexity of heterogeneous devices and access technologies, and to guarantee robust, ubiquitous, and secure connectivity over the urban environments. At the same time, beside studying the issues of the city-wide infrastructure deployment, the workshop aims to investigate the potential provided by the end-users devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) when augmented in order to turn them into active components of the smart-city ecosystem, instead of mere connection end-points. A thorough understanding of these challenges from a practical/systems perspective is still necessary. This especially applies to insights from the areas of hardware platforms of sensor and actuator nodes, their operating systems, the networking of nodes, and fresh perspectives from field trials and applications. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensing network research communities working on embedded sensing systems to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and the future development of wireless sensing in general. WUWNet is the premier venue for research and development bringing real-time, in-situ sensing and actuation to this aquatic world. Thus, many aspects of the networking protocol stack - from the physical layer to the application layer and the various system issues - will be represented at this conference. It also poses new problems and challenges due to its intrinsic feature of large scale, in terms of spatial and temporal distribution, information amount, energy consumption, interfaces, functionalities, etc. These unprecedented challenging issues are across the disciplines of embedded system, manufacturing, telecommunication, computing, sensing, software engineering, data management and analysis. Emerging and advanced communication technologies (e.g., cloud-based radio access networks) introduce many new opportunities to tackle the challenging issues in large-scale ubiquitous IoT. To address such challenges in large-scale IoT, besides requiring intelligent algorithms for data collection and analysis, efficient network diagnosis and management, we need new analytical tools, fundamental mathematics beyond the confines of traditional communication and information theories, and even methodologies from other networking related fields like economics, biology, and thermodynamics, to shed light on the fundamental performance limit of large scale IoT system and to guide the design, implementation, development, and optimization of emerging IoT technologies. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution. The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate “Big brother scenario”. Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. The secondary focus of this workshop is on IoT vision and perspective towards Web 3.0. IoTIP features two tracks: * Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation; * Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: * IoT paradigms, architectures, applications and technologies * IoT systems and components * IoT for semantic web and personalization * Tools for developing IoT applications * Blogging, Podcasting, Tagging and Social networking through the IoT * Cloud vs distributed computing for the IoT * Device to device communications for the IoT * Security and privacy control mechanisms * Performance assessment and management (QoS, scalability, reliability, etc) * PHY layer, Spectrum management for IoT radio communications * MAC protocols (e.g., scheduling, power control etc.) for IoT * Mobility management * Naming, address management and End-to-End Addressability * Object, device and service management * RFID, sensors, actuator technologies * Middleware * Sustainable design and technologies (e.g. energy-efficiency) * Test-beds and field trials * Standardization and regulatory issues Submission guidelines Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research on IoTIP research topics. All submissions should be written in English using 10 point font and be six (6) printed pages long maximum using 10 point font and including figures and tables. The papers should be submitted to one of the two tracks: * Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation; * Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT. Authors must suggest their preferred track for their paper at the time of submission. The workshop chairs, however, reserve the right to switch papers between tracks if they deem them a better fit for another track. Please note that the proceedings of this workshop will appear in IEEEXplore and will be included in DCOSS conference proceedings. Extended versions of selected papers will be considered for publication in IEEE IoT Journal.
