These platforms are bringing sensing and actuation at places where traditional technology does not reach; for example, for aerial pollution monitoring or for disaster management in remote areas. This novel class of cyber-physical systems (CPS) take many of the design, implementation, and validation issues of traditional CPSs to an extreme. Control, sensing, estimation, and algorithms for localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration of individual robots are needed to govern their movements. The timing aspects of vehicle operation are key to provide run-time guarantees about performance. The software design and implementation must lead to provably correct execution. Noisy or inaccurate information sensed by the robots must be properly handled to ensure an accurate understanding of the environment. Research efforts to address the issues above, while related, have previously progressed independently with little cross-fertilization across diverse disciplines such as robotics, real time systems, signal processing, and software development. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform where researchers from different communities can get together to better understand the latest developments in these related fields as well as to establish connections for future interdisciplinary work. The workshop intends to provide a platform to enable such cross fertilization, to ultimately speed up the development of the field and to foster rich interdisciplinary work in the future. Particularly, co-location with the Cyber-Physical Systems week will be an asset in this regard. CPSWEEK is the premiere CPS event that brings together five top conferences from complementary areas such as Embedded Systems, Real-time Systems, Sensor Networks, Hybrid Systems, and Networked Systems. To build the needed interdisciplinary work ultimately necessary to the development of the field, the workshop seeks technical contributions describing original, previously unpublished results in all topics related to the design of robotic sensor networks, including works across two or more of the following topic areas: * Low-power communication in robot networks * Programming of robot swarms * Sensing coverage using robotic swarms * Task allocation * Distributed sensing * Coordination in robot swarms * Verification and validation * Distributed planning and navigation * Novel applications * Experience reports Important dates: Submission deadline: Feb 21, 2014. MobiCom 2014 solicits papers that focus on the theory, system, practice and challenge of providing users with a successful mobile or wireless experience. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution. The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate “Big brother scenario”. Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. Digital watermarking and steganography may protect information, conceal secrets, or are used as core primitives in digital rights’ management schemes. Alongside the abovementioned types of digital media steganography, currently the target of increased interest is Network Steganography – a part of Information Hiding focused on modern networks. It is a method of hiding secret data in users' normal data transmissions. Steganographic techniques arise and evolve with the development of network protocols and mechanisms, and are expected to be used in secret communication or information sharing. Presently, it becomes a hot topic due to the proliferation of information networks and multimedia services in networks and social networks. The purpose of establishing applications of Information Hiding may be varied – possible uses can fall into the category of legal actions or illicit activity. Frequently the illegal aspect is accentuated – starting from the criminal communication, through information leakage from protected systems, cyber weapon exchange, up to industrial espionage. Recently discovered malware like Duqu and Alureon point to the alleged utilization of Information Hiding techniques in botnets for covert communication in the C&C channels, which proves that Information Hiding poses important challenges to investigators. On the other side of the spectrum lie legitimate uses, which include circumvention of web censorship and surveillance, computer forensics (tracing and identification) and copyright protection (e.g. watermarking images). This special issue intends to present some of the most relevant ongoing research in the Information Hiding field. The Second LiveCity Workshop on Smart and Pervasive Communications for Enhanced Communities (LiveCity 2014), will be organised in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain, co-located with 5th International Conference on SmArt COmmunications in NEtwork Technologies (SaCoNeT'2014). ============================================ SCOPE ---------- The Second LiveCity Workshop on Smart and Pervasive Communications for Enhanced Communities (LiveCity 2014) will be held in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Smart Communications in Network Technologies (SaCoNeT 2014) in Vilanova i la Geltrù, on June 18, 2014. The LiveCity project implements a range of pilots for city communities across the public Internet by building a wireline and 4G wireless network of 5 cities, including a right of way without interference from unwanted traffic. These communities could range from emergency ambulances, hospitals, doctors, patients, museum curators, city administrations and schools. The main goals and contributions include, but are not limited to, authenticated and encrypted traffic, live and secure interactive video-to-video, improvements for health services and city administration, reduction of fuel costs and carbon footprint, enhanced education techniques and augmented city experiences for tourists and cultural consumers. Despite all the opportunities envisioned for future services and applications – such as improved education, security, elderly support, among others – several communication and technical challenges must still be addressed by researchers, ensuring feasible and sustainable solutions with scalable and affordable options to include, replace or improve existing services. These platforms are bringing sensing and actuation at places where traditional technology does not reach; for example, for aerial pollution monitoring or for disaster management in remote areas. This novel class of cyber-physical systems (CPS) take many of the design, implementation, and validation issues of traditional CPSs to an extreme. Control, sensing, estimation, and algorithms for localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration of individual robots are needed to govern their movements. The timing aspects of vehicle operation are key to provide run-time guarantees about performance. The software design and implementation must lead to provably correct execution. Noisy or inaccurate information sensed by the robots must be properly handled to ensure an accurate understanding of the environment. Research efforts to address the issues above, while related, have previously progressed independently with little cross-fertilization across diverse disciplines such as robotics, real time systems, signal processing, and software development. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform where researchers from different communities can get together to better understand the latest developments in these related fields as well as to establish connections for future interdisciplinary work. The workshop intends to provide a platform to enable such cross fertilization, to ultimately speed up the development of the field and to foster rich interdisciplinary work in the future. Particularly, co-location with the Cyber-Physical Systems week will be an asset in this regard. CPSWEEK is the premiere CPS event that brings together five top conferences from complementary areas such as Embedded Systems, Real-time Systems, Sensor Networks, Hybrid Systems, and Networked Systems. First, for wireless sensor networks, which operate at ultra-low-power, the small wireless autonomous sensors can be powered by harvesting ambient power that is scavenged in milliwatts or even microwatts. If these wireless sensors, deployed throughout a home or factory, in-building or even outdoors to monitor all kinds of environmental conditions, are powered by energy harvesting, there are no batteries to replace nor labour costs associated with replacing them, making them self-sustainable. However, the design of communication systems has to take into account the fluctuating and often unpredictable availability of energy source. In a cellular network, energy harvesting can be used to provide power in many elements of a telecom network, saving considerable costs in electricity supply and providing low maintenance monitoring. Powering mobile phone base stations with wind or solar power allows telecom networks to expand beyond the limits of the power grid. The possibility of re-distribution of the renewable energy in smart grids allows further efficient utilization, but leads to many challenges as well. Another important focus of this workshop is on RF energy harvesting. RF energy is currently broadcasted from billions of radio transmitters around the world, including mobile telephones, handheld radios, mobile base stations, and television/radio broadcast stations. The ability to harvest RF energy, from ambient or dedicated sources, enables wireless charging of low-power devices and has significant benefits to product design, usability, and reliability. Fundamental practical issues on realizing this ability leads to many interesting research problems. This workshop considers energy harvesting related issues in communications. We especially welcome research work that pushes theory to practice, such as theoretical work with emphasis on how to solve practical problem, experimental work on new systems, and system-level considerations for practical deployment. The workshop solicits state-of-the-art technical papers that were not previously published and are not currently under review for publication elsewhere. The previous workshop RITMAN 2012 was held in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and Applications (SOCA 2012), December 2012 in Taipei, Taiwan. Disaster management is a multi-phase process, from mitigation, to preparedness, response, recovery, to reconstruction. RITMAN workshops focus primarily on preparedness, response and recovery phases. In recent years, we have seen tremendous advances in technologies for the predication and detection of natural disasters. Many standards and tools have enabled interoperability of diverse sensors, sensor networks and web services. Open platforms and message exchange standards have emerged to facilitate alert delivery and support response operations. Despite these advances, statistics on natural disasters still show that even technologically advanced regions are not as well prepared and resilient against calamitous events that bring damage, destruction and loss of property and life. RITMAN workshop series aims to provide researchers and developers with a forum for the purpose of stimulating discussions and collaborations on missing ICT and novel applications that can enhance preparedness and resiliency against disasters, especially events of unforeseen sizes and severity. The central theme of RITMAN 2014 will be the exploitation of wireless and mobile technologies for disaster preparedness and response. A major factor that impedes the applicability of sensor networks is the huge deployment cost and management overhead. The past few years have witnessed the dramatic proliferation of portable mobiledevices, such as smart phones and tablet computers. Notably, these popular pocket-sized gadgets are embedded with a set of versatilesensors, which could provide abundant data about individuals, human society and environments. This new mobile sensor network formed by mobile devices provides a new horizon for ubiquitous sensing at a low cost. Under the new paradigm of mobile ubiquitous sensing, each mobile device is held by an individual. The underlying social tie among individuals will play an important role in the mobile sensing process. It is, therefore, of great interest to study the mobileubiquitous sensing from the perspective of social networks. This issue has not received much attention though the traditional way of ubiquitous sensing has, instead, been extensively investigated. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution. The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate “Big brother scenario”. Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. The secondary focus of this workshop is on IoT vision and perspective towards Web 3.0. IoTIP features two tracks: - Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation; - Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT. UCNs are spontaneous and grassroots deployments of wireless architectures (e.g., ad-hoc or infrastructure), often involving low-cost deployment. Furthermore, users in such environments tend to roam frequently. In such roaming environments, users carry equipment that plays an active role in terms of topology changes (e.g., an LTE phone which is sharing Internet access to other surrounding devices, may become active or inactive without operator control). Common to user-centric environments is a social behaviour that heavily impacts network operation from an end-to-end perspective, and on the different layers of the OSI stack. UCNs empower the end-user as a new Internet stakeholder and not just as a consumer and producer of content. User-centric networking technologies can be applied to a wide range of scenarios, encompassing: i) sharing subscribed broadband Internet access; ii) providing support for better Internet connectivity; iii) allowing the use of communication services even in the absence of reliable Internet access; iv) assisting networking services based on user involvement for the detection and repair of communication problems. The new role of an empowered end-user is disruptive in several aspects, namely: i) in the end-to-end Internet paradigm, end-user devices will actively participate as a network element in addition to being an endpoint host; ii) network boundaries of trust will need to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior; and iii) end-user devices should be capable of handling intermittent Internet connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators. There is also the need to further understand wholesale models incorporating UCNs, as well as to understand the impact of UCNs in the context of standardization. Workshop on Robotic Sensor Networks - part of CPSWEEK - ==================================================================== 14 April 2013 Berlin (Germany) http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/faculty/kdantu/rsn14/ Recent developments in sensing and actuation technology, along with the miniaturization of computing and communication, have led to the development of commodity robot technology such as hobby drones and robot toolkits. These platforms are bringing sensing and actuation at places where traditional technology does not reach; for example, for aerial pollution monitoring or for disaster management in remote areas. This novel class of cyber-physical systems (CPS) take many of the design, implementation, and validation issues of traditional CPSs to an extreme. Control, sensing, estimation, and algorithms for localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration of individual robots are needed to govern their movements. The timing aspects of vehicle operation are key to provide run-time guarantees about performance. The software design and implementation must lead to provably correct execution. Noisy or inaccurate information sensed by the robots must be properly handled to ensure an accurate understanding of the environment. Research efforts to address the issues above, while related, have previously progressed independently with little cross-fertilization across diverse disciplines such as robotics, real time systems, signal processing, and software development. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform where researchers from different communities can get together to better understand the latest developments in these related fields as well as to establish connections for future interdisciplinary work. The workshop intends to provide a platform to enable such cross fertilization, to ultimately speed up the development of the field and to foster rich interdisciplinary work in the future. Particularly, co-location with the Cyber-Physical Systems week will be an asset in this regard. CPSWEEK is the premiere CPS event that brings together five top conferences from complementary areas such as Embedded Systems, Real-time Systems, Sensor Networks, Hybrid Systems, and Networked Systems. Complex channel properties such as multipath, delay spread, and Doppler effects prevent even the most complex channel models from exactly characterizing repeatable in-situ behavior. Abstract models of devices and energy storage, as well as emerging paradigms such as energy harvesting enabled systems, make estimation of system performance and lifetime quite challenging unless supported by field experiments. To better understand the potential of novel paradigms and ideas, it is therefore imperative to evaluate these ideas in the field via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and devices, and by the varying and error-prone wireless channel. Even slight misunderstandings can cause drastic performance differences in various research avenues from cognitive spectral sensing to spatial reuse in large-scale network planning to lifetime and amount of tasks which can be performed by Internet-of-Things devices. As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking research community. WiNMee 2014 is the tenth edition in the International Workshop on Wireless Network Measurements series that began in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements and experimentation. The primary goal is, of course, to increase the cooperation among vehicles, roadside systems and traffic control centers, for greater road safety. However, social and cloud applications for drivers and passengers alike are envisioned to be more and more tightly integrated with the vehicle on-board systems, as well as with the mobile devices carried by passengers. Following the spirit of the WONS conference, the Special Session on VANETs and ITS will cover all research topics related to vehicular networking technologies, applications, systems and services, and, in particular: Medium access control protocols Multi-channel organization and operation Communication protocol design and network management System architecture Safety and comfort applications Cooperative Awareness applications V2X communication Simulation frameworks and field operational testing Security and privacy Social and cloud applications for vehicles Wireless in-car networks DSRC systems for vulnerable road users (pedestrians, road workers, bicycles, etc.) Automated driving and communication SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Submitted papers must not have been published elsewhere and must not be under current review by another conference or journal. The development of SCH will play a key role in the modern society to meet the broad goals of medical applications. However, significant challenges still remain in the area. For example, lack of medical baseline data for each particular individual. The IoT technology such as continuous sensing mobile communication can be employed to create individualized baselines. The theme of the special issue (SI) is especially focused on the two major aspects of IoT for SCH: (1) monitoring and assisting individuals utilizing smart systems including sensors, devices, and robotics, (2) an interoperable digital health information infrastructure to increase medical/health information availability and use. The outputs of SCH with IoT could significantly improve a person's outcomes and quality of life. Findings from the SI will provide support for enabling IoT to move the focus from disease to health and wellbeing at the individual, system, and organizational level in many SCH applications. We encourage submissions on theoretical, practical, as well as experimental studies, from both academia and industry, related to all aspects of IoT for SCH. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks. Thus, it allows for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. When human interaction is absent from the system dynamics, the vision is also referred to as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grids, surveillance, home automation, intelligent transportation, and it is strongly expected that new applications will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. At the moment, two of the most important challenges for the widespread use of IoT/M2M technologies are: 1. Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (future) Internet. 2. The creation of value-added services, especially open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory, application, and implementation of the IoT/M2M concepts: Technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services. In addition to providing feedback and advice, this forum will provide an excellent opportunity for students to network as well as to practice presenting their research clearly and concisely. This meeting is best suited to students who are far enough into their PhD to have a concrete dissertation proposal outlining the key challenges they plan to solve as well as the strategies and methodologies that are applicable. Furthermore, participants should not plan to finish their dissertation within 6 months of the forum, as that would leave little time to include advice and suggestions into their work. *Awards* Best presentation will receive an award at the forum. *Format* The forum will be a one-day event consisting of short student presentations, discussion, and a roundtable discussion. Each participant will have time allotted for a short presentation as well as an in-depth and constructive discussion led by the panel. In order to allow adequate time for each presentation, we will limit the number of participants to 10 presenters. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion, in which panelists will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions and advice to the entire group. *Submission* Submissions should consist of the following: An extended abstract of the student's dissertation research (up to 2 pages) including a brief discussion of motivation, challenges, related work, initial results, and references. Applicants should clearly identify their contributions to the field of mobile systems. Also, it is recommended to clearly delineate the student's prior work and cite them; this will help the reviewers and the panel to make better judgment of technical contributions and provide more useful suggestions. A short biographical sketch (1 page max) describing the applicants affiliations and research activities. This should include the date that the student expects to complete his/her dissertation. From transportation to green/smart buildings, urban agriculture, environmental monitoring, energy storage and public safety/security, all of these new applications rely on the deployment of smart object networks offering a high degree of scalability, reliability, and security. This is why we believe that current and probable future green engineering challenges in building smarter cities must employ the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm to enable the creation of urban and sustainable cyber-physical systems. *Scope* The scope of this special issue is to explore state-of-the-art research covering a variety of concepts on green engineering in building smart cities in an efficient and sustainable way. The more sustainable solution to the 5G promise of true ubiquitous mobile broadband is to deploy very dense wireless networks, which we call DenseNets. Intuition based on experience suggests that DenseNets will encompass significant overlapping, and possibly non-interoperable technologies, which can be seen as an evolution of today’s heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Similar to HetNet but only more severe, DenseNets will have to face a multitude of techno-economic challenges such as backhaul availability, very low cost of small base stations, operation, administration and management (OAM), Machine Type Communications (MTC), etc. Some of the relevant issues already identified in the DenseNets scenarios include the nonlinear characteristics of the achieved throughput and energy consumption. As an increased number of cells are being deployed, the effect of the interference becomes dominant, resulting on an overall throughput which is not linear with the number of cells. Similar nonlinear effects on energy efficiency have been observed due to the need for the equipment to be continuously serving high demand applications. In order to overcome these problems, a new family of solutions characterized by the use of cooperative approaches is required to take advantage of the new opportunities brought by the DenseNets scenarios. This opens a broad spectrum of research directions, standardisation paths, and market opportunities, which will involve the relevant communities in both academia and industry in the forthcoming years. The goal of this feature topic is to publish original material, either research or review articles, on the topic of extremely dense wireless networks (DenseNets). Hence, recently several mobile augmented reality (AR) applications have been developed e.g. AR-based tourist guiding system. Such applications superimpose computer-generated data such as text, video, graphs on top of the real-world view as captured by a camera embedded within a smartphone. Thus, such applications enhance a userâ€™s perception of reality and of his surrounding environment. Furthermore, mobile augmented reality applications which are designed for children with special needs have recently appeared. In addition, recently researchers have extended robots usage into our daily lives such as search and rescue operations, education, entertainment, special need population e.g. autistic children or seniors. These new mobile augmented reality and robot application domains require close interactions with human beings, smart intelligence to allow smooth visual and audio recognition and some novel interface design. In this workshop, we hope to gather researchers who conduct researches in these two exciting fields to gather and share information on the challenges they face as well as their innovative design. * * *Relevant Topics include (but are not limited to these):* Fundamental design: 1.
