In addition to currently used underlying networks and protocols, new wired/wireless networks and protocols are planned to be deployed for different components/applications of the Smart Grid. Based on the data requirements of the applications, new challenges have arisen at the network layer of the protocol stack with respect to routing and data forwarding. Smart Grid is expected to be a multi-tier network supported by a hybrid mesh of different communications technologies to provide efficient and reliable access to grid components in diverse environments. Mainly, there will be three components of this multi-tier network which can be deploying a variety of communications networks. These networks are known as Home Area Network (HAN)/ Field Area Networks (FAN), Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Recent research on Smart Grid mostly focused on the security and privacy aspects of its applications. While some of the current routing protocols designed for wireless networks can be partially used in some of the Smart Grid networks, unique characteristics of Smart Grid applications as well as the large-scale size of the infrastructure necessitates new research at the network layer. In particular, there are several key issues need to be addressed in order to support network interconnectivity across the Smart Grid communication infrastructure that consists of HANs, NANs and WANs. For instance, scalability is an issue if a wireless infrastructure is to be used given that current wireless networking protocols are geared for small-size networks. In this respect, employment of power-line communications requires careful adaptation of the current routing protocols to address interference issues on power-lines. Another important issue is security since Smart Grid will consist of multiple-interconnected networks with diverse underlying communication technology, ownership and management. The availability and reliability of the Smart Grid as well as certain privacy information such as power usage data from each household need to be protected en route to the destination. Furthermore, the communication infrastructure will require status monitoring, fault detection, isolation, and recovery that pertain to rerouting. Finally, the ability to uniquely identify elements in the network and routing capabilities to all network end points for a wide range of applications with different quality of service (QoS) requirements will need to be addressed. The goal of this special issue is to collect papers in the area of routing in several networks of Smart Grid with different goals, characteristics and limitations. We solicit papers which will address routing challenges that are unique to Smart Grid and address major issues such as security, privacy, reliability, QoS, interference and scalability which pertain to Smart Grid applications. In traditional sensing techniques such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), distributed sensors are leveraged to acquire real world conditions. However, static sensing is affected by several conditions, such as insufficient node coverage, high installation/maintenance cost, and lack of scalability. Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) presents a new sensing paradigm based on the power of various mobile devices/objects (e.g., smartphones, wearable devices, sensor-equipped vehicles, etc.). The sheer number of mobile device users and their inherent mobility enables a new and fast-growing sensing paradigm: the ability to acquire local knowledge through sensor-enhanced mobile devices ®C e.g., location, personal and surrounding context, noise level, traffic conditions, and in the future more specialized information such as pollution ®C and the possibility to share this knowledge within the social sphere, practitioners, health care providers, and utility providers such as municipalities for example. The information collected by the mobile devices on the ground combined with the support of the cloud where data fusion takes place, make mobile sensing a versatile platform that can often replace static sensing infrastructures, and enabling a broad range of applications from urban dynamic mining, public safety, environment monitoring, just to name a few. Numerous and unique research challenges arise from the mobile crowd sensing paradigm ranging from participatory and opportunistic data collection, proper incentive mechanisms, transient network communication, and big data processing. By having human participation in the loop, several other issues regarding to the privacy and security of data (e.g., sensitive information such as human voice, location may be revealed), quality/trust of the data contributed (e.g., there might be fake or malicious nodes involved) should also be addressed. This feature topic issue provides the opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and application developers to review and discuss the state-of-the-art and trends of MCS techniques and applications or propose new solutions. In the light of the above, the main purpose of this feature topic on Mobile Crowd Sensing is threefold: -to promote unprecedented approaches and techniques in participatory and opportunistic data collection, communication, analysis, and visualization; -to identify open issues which remain a challenge towards the convergence of information and communication technologies, privacy protection methods, social and psychological theories in MCS; -to exploit novel application areas and demonstrate the benefits of MCS in contrast with more traditional static sensing approaches. Besides allowing people to connect anytime and everywhere, the Internet is evolving into the communication medium for objects that are embedded in the physical world. The coupling between such objects and a worldwide standard-based communication infrastructure constitutes the Internet of Things (IoT) and is characterized by machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The IoT enables a detailed characterization of the physical environment, as well as a rich set of interactions with the physical world. As such, the IoT has the potential to revolutionize pervasive computing and its applications. Indeed, the realization of a ubiquitous IoT poses several challenges about seamless integration, heterogeneity, scalability, mobility, and many others. This special issue solicits high-quality papers presenting original research results on the IoT that are tightly related to pervasive and ubiquitous scenarios. Submissions could consist of theoretical and applied research in topics including, but not limited to: * System architectures for the IoT targeted to pervasive scenarios * Adaptive and autonomic computing in the IoT * Middleware and service platforms for ubiquitous IoT applications * Security and privacy in pervasive IoT scenarios * Ubiquitous computing solutions exploiting the M2M paradigm * Context awareness in the IoT * Mobility management in the IoT and in M2M communications * Experiences in building ubiquitous IoT platforms * Pervasive applications built on top of the IoT * Enabling technologies and standards for the IoT and M2M communications * Sustainable design and solutions for the IoT All submissions must be prepared according to the Guide for Authors as published by the Pervasive and Mobile Computing journal (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/pmc). Authors should select the SI: Internet of Things, from the pull-down menu during the submission process. All contributions must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. One central element of this trend is the existence of a massive network of interconnected wired/wireless physical objects/things/sensors/devices, which can interact in a rich set of manners through a worldwide communication and information infrastructure and provide value added services. The vision of such an Internet of Things (IoT) system, supported by industrial companies and governments globally, has the potential to mark an evolution that will surely have a great impact on our environments and our lives. Yet, the realization of a ubiquitous IoT also poses a number of challenges where security is among the top concerns. The globally interconnected physical objects inevitably result in a potentially enormous attack surface that can be easily exploited if without adequate protection. To enable strong security foundations for the ubiquitous IoT, plenty of factors need to be taken into account. Examples are data security, privacy, access control, information assurance, trust management, secure services interoperability, seamless integration, system heterogeneity, scalability, and mobility. This special issue solicits high-quality original research results about IoT that pertain to state-of-the-art security and privacy issues in various pervasive and ubiquitous scenarios. We encourage submissions on theoretical, practical, as well as experimental studies, from both academia and industry, related to all aspects of security for IoT. The overall goal of the Pervasive Health Conference is to take a multidisciplinary approach to Pervasive Healthcare Technology research and development. The Pervasive Healthcare Community is addressing a broad scope of research topics and concerns: * identify and understand problems from a technological, social, and medical perspective (with a particular emphasis on understanding and supporting patient needs); * design, implementation, and evaluation of supporting hardware and software infrastructures, algorithms, and applications; and * organisational strategies that facilitate integration of Pervasive Healthcare Technology into the healthcare enterprise. Traditional healthcare environments are extremely complex and challenging to manage, as they are required to cope with an assortment of patient conditions under various circumstances with a number of resource constraints. Pervasive healthcare technologies seek to respond to a variety of these pressures by successfully integrating them within existing health care environments. Technologies, standards and procedures on their own provide little and or no meaningful service. It is essential that pervasive healthcare environments, through a combined approach of data collection, data correlation and data presentation, assist health care professionals in delivering high levels of patient care, and empower individuals and their families for self-care and health management. The Pervasive Healthcare conference in Oldenburg aims to gather technology experts, practitioners, industry and international authorities contributing towards the assessment, development and deployment of pervasive medical based technologies, standards and procedures. Pervasive Health 2014 will accept submissions in the following categories: *Full papers* (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. *Short Papers and Posters* (up to 4 pages submissions): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. In addition, short papers are not expected to include a comprehensive review of related work. Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference. Such networks are now well known as the primal channels for communication between people, means for increasing marketing potentials, tools for enabling social research, and forums for affecting political trends, all of which eventually indicate a more than ever increasing penetration and exploitation of wireless and mobile networks in human lives. The proposed workshop (DySON) will mainly cover the technical aspects of the interplay between social and wireless mobile networks, and more specifically will focus on original contributions regarding topics, such as structure, behavior, and optimization of social and mobile wireless networks. DySON aspires to raise holistically the awareness of the research and industrial communities in the area of social wireless mobile networks from diverse and broad perspectives and provide a venue for the presentation and dissemination of the latest novel advances in the corresponding field of science. Emphasis will be placed on the interplay between social and mobile wireless networks, aiming at identifying commonalities and complementarities between them, with the final objective of highlighting approaches, properties and features that can be used in order to simultaneously improve their design and operation. Such interplay between social and mobile wireless networks has been lately addressed in the field of Complex Network Analysis (CNA), and DySON, aspires to receive and present the highest quality contributions regarding analysis, control and optimization from the perspective of CNA, thus achieving diversity of application domains (mobile/online social and wireless networks) and promoting the most interesting interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary analytical methodologies. The workshop will be centered both on formal methods, as well as on noteworthy technical contributions of more practical flavor. Concepts and knowledge from several fields need to be jointly considered to address the corresponding challenges, while opening new frontiers and opportunities in relevant research. CNA and utility maximization already applied in the field of complex networks and socio-aware information networks exhibiting the tight interplay between wireless and social networks, along with the design of communication protocols and respective algorithms are just few indicative examples. DySON aims for papers following the above approach and will be devoted to the presentation of the highest quality ones, thus contributing to creating critical mass in the corresponding literature and further steaming the locomotive of control and optimization in social and mobile wireless networks. The solution to this problem is the deployment of Self-Organizing NETworks (SONETs). SONETs represent a novel paradigm based on the deployment of networks with self-organized functionalities. There are significant technical problems that need to be addressed for the successful deployment and operation of SONETs. In particular, time-, frequency- and spatial-domain interference management is a fundamental issue. To deal with increasing peak data demands, SONETs design should be self-organized based on interference/load/congestion levels, dynamically adapting their transmissions via smart traffic offloading strategies onto licensed/unlicensed bands. In this context, there is a critical need for new ways of reducing energy consumption of communication systems if the current trajectory of traffic growth and supporting anywhere/anytime/anything access is to continue unabated. Energy costs are significant in a broad range of communications networks ranging from data center networks (where network equipment consume about 15% of the overall energy used) to cellular networks (where energy use of base stations amounts to around 70% of the t! otal). The need for ‘greener’ communications technologies has been recognized by the research community as demonstrated by the significant research efforts in this area during the last years. However, many challenges still remain to be addressed. The special issue of Computer Networks on Green Communications will focus on recent research results in the area of green communications. We seek papers describing research results that show significant energy savings in communications systems. We also seek survey and tutorial papers in green communications. With the ubiquitous use of mobile devices, mobile application security has become an important research topic. Compared with personal computers or servers, mobile devices store much more sensitive personal information and are thus attractive targets for attackers seeking financial gain. Because these devices are always online and have a restricted user interface, it is easier for attackers to hide their malicious activities. This special issue aims to present high-quality articles describing security algorithms, protocols, policies, and frameworks for applications running on modern mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile. Only submissions describing previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research that are not currently under review by a conference or journal will be considered. Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to, the following: * app and app store security and privacy; * benchmarking and evaluation of mobile security solutions; * bots on mobile devices; * cloud security and privacy, as related to mobile devices; * mobile device forensics; * security and privacy in mobile device operating systems and middleware; * mobile malware collection, statistics, and analysis; * mobile services and social networking security; * reverse engineering and automated analysis of mobile malware; * security for smart payment applications, including near-field communication; * standardization efforts related to developing and vetting mobile apps; * testbeds and case studies for mobile platforms; * traffic monitoring and detection algorithms for mobile platforms; * usability of approaches for mobile security and privacy; * virtualization solutions for mobile security; and * Web browser security on mobile devices. MMOGs are gaining an increasing importance worldwide because they pose a number of new challenges to science, engineering, and industry, not to mention that they constitute a vibrant market that involves large budgets and businesses. These challenges may be understood from three points of view: computing, information, and communication. Having computers capable of dealing with massive data and computations per time unit is essential for online games demanding interactive rates or real-time, but it is not least true we need enough network bandwidth in order to guarantee that the game updates across the network are conveyed and received without lags. Recall that online games as, for example, World of Warcraft has over ten million subscribers with a peak of about half a million players interacting simultaneously within a virtual world. In general terms, we can even say that computer games constitute the driving force behind the new generation of high-end GPU-based personal computers that produce stunning graphics and deliver massive general-purpose computations. This special issue will cover enabling technologies for MMOGs, as well as applications of MMOGs in other domains like military training, e-learning, among others. The focus will be mostly on the technological aspects of games, i.e., the computing (e.g., load balancing), information (e.g., persistent worlds), and communication (e.g., networking topologies as P2P), but high-quality papers that tackle these technological aspects in non-massive multiuser games may be also considered if they are able to contribute with solutions that can benefit MMOGs too. Given the ubiquity of mobile phones and the high density of people in metropolitan areas, participatory sensing can achieve an unprecedented level of coverage in both space and time for observing events of interest in urban spaces. The Participatory Sensing and Crowdsourcing track at ISSNIP 2014 is designed to attract diverse participation from researchers and practitioners working at the leading edge in participatory sensing and crowdsourcing technologies. This necessarily covers a broad spectrum of topics, representative of the cross-cutting nature of the area -- from novel applications, to making sense of large-scale sensor data, to human computer interaction, to practical experiments. The context is the information characterizing the situation of an entity and providing information about the present status of people, places, things and devices in the environment. An entity is a person, device, place, or object relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, such as location, time, activities, and services. Context awareness allows for customization or creation of the application to match the preferences of the individual user, based on current context such as enterprise environment or home network. A first area of interest concerns the Person Context Awareness. The recent emergence of the so-called social networks, the widespread presence of smartphones equipped by heterogeneous sensors, such as GPS receivers, accelerometers, compasses, microphones and cameras, and the availability of geo-referenced information enable analysis of new context definitions that may concern individual, social, and urban scenarios. Indeed, recently, the available information may include mobility patterns of people and also physical activities (movements), physical status, and emotional conditions. This information is often acquired and shared, in real time, by users. Allowing the reliable extraction and sharing of that information is a fundamental research issue with important applications. It could improve the experience of individual, communities, organizations, and societies by adapting context to the environment (home, hospitals, campuses, offices, etc.). Another area in this field deals with the Object Context Awareness. Context awareness may be implemented using quite different aspects under different environments, conditions, and layers, such as layered context-aware architecture for middleware, context awareness for connecting entities of network components, and infrastructure (Internet protocol, handoff management, sensing, network requirements, network controls and network implementation). This feature topic's scope will include both computing and communications networks, especially mobile computing networks. This topic will focus on more recent relevant topics, such as green context awareness (which would be supported by Technical Subcommittee on Green Communications and Computing [TSCGCC] of the IEEE Communications Society), context-aware security, new context-aware network architecture, and context-awareness for connecting entities (which would be supported by Technical Committee on Satellite and Space Communications [SSC] of the IEEE Communications Society), and context-aware social networks. In addition to currently used underlying networks and protocols, new wired/wireless networks and protocols are planned to be deployed for different components/applications of the Smart Grid. Based on the data requirements of the applications, new challenges have arisen at the network layer of the protocol stack with respect to routing and data forwarding. Smart Grid is expected to be a multi-tier network supported by a hybrid mesh of different communications technologies to provide efficient and reliable access to grid components in diverse environments. Mainly, there will be three components of this multi-tier network which can be deploying a variety of communications networks. These networks are known as Home Area Network (HAN)/ Field Area Networks (FAN), Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). Recent research on Smart Grid mostly focused on the security and privacy aspects of its applications. While some of the current routing protocols designed for wireless networks can be partially used in some of the Smart Grid networks, unique characteristics of Smart Grid applications as well as the large-scale size of the infrastructure necessitates new research at the network layer. In particular, there are several key issues need to be addressed in order to support network interconnectivity across the Smart Grid communication infrastructure that consists of HANs, NANs and WANs. For instance, scalability is an issue if a wireless infrastructure is to be used given that current wireless networking protocols are geared for small-size networks. In this respect, employment of power-line communications requires careful adaptation of the current routing protocols to address interference issues on power-lines. Another important issue is security since Smart Grid will consist of multiple-interconnected networks with diverse underlying communication technology, ownership and management. The availability and reliability of the Smart Grid as well as certain privacy information such as power usage data from each household need to be protected en route to the destination. Furthermore, the communication infrastructure will require status monitoring, fault detection, isolation, and recovery that pertain to rerouting. Finally, the ability to uniquely identify elements in the network and routing capabilities to all network end points for a wide range of applications with different quality of service (QoS) requirements will need to be addressed. The goal of this special issue is to collect papers in the area of routing in several networks of Smart Grid with different goals, characteristics and limitations. We solicit papers which will address routing challenges that are unique to Smart Grid and address major issues such as security, privacy, reliability, QoS, interference and scalability which pertain to Smart Grid applications. The context is the information characterizing the situation of an entity and providing information about the present status of people, places, things and devices in the environment. An entity is a person, device, place, or object relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, such as location, time, activities, and services. Context awareness allows for customization or creation of the application to match the preferences of the individual user, based on current context such as enterprise environment or home network. A first area of interest concerns the Person Context Awareness. The recent emergence of the so-called social networks, the widespread presence of smartphones equipped by heterogeneous sensors, such as GPS receivers, accelerometers, compasses, microphones and cameras, and the availability of geo-referenced information enable analysis of new context definitions that may concern individual, social, and urban scenarios. Indeed, recently, the available information may include mobility patterns of people and also physical activities (movements), physical status, and emotional conditions. This information is often acquired and shared, in real time, by users. Allowing the reliable extraction and sharing of that information is a fundamental research issue with important applications. It could improve the experience of individual, communities, organizations, and societies by adapting context to the environment (home, hospitals, campuses, offices, etc.). Another area in this field deals with the Object Context Awareness. Context awareness may be implemented using quite different aspects under different environments, conditions, and layers, such as layered context-aware architecture for middleware, context awareness for connecting entities of network components, and infrastructure (Internet protocol, handoff management, sensing, network requirements, network controls and network implementation). This feature topic's scope will include both computing and communications networks, especially mobile computing networks. This topic will focus on more recent relevant topics, such as green context awareness (which would be supported by Technical Subcommittee on Green Communications and Computing [TSCGCC] of the IEEE Communications Society), context-aware security, new context-aware network architecture, and context-awareness for connecting entities (which would be supported by Technical Committee on Satellite and Space Communications [SSC] of the IEEE Communications Society), and context-aware social networks. The papers in this feature topic will focus on state-of-the-art research and emerging industry technologies in Context-Aware Networking and Communications. In this context, what appears theoretically possible becomes conditionally feasible only when all available network resources are being efficiently exploited, including those hosted in nearby fixed deployments. New research paradigms can give a unification perspective to the various pieces of the global network jigsaw puzzle. Software-Defined Networks (SDNs), Mobile Cloud Computing and Information-Centric Networks (ICNs) are among the recent innovations that can enable flexible solutions for integrating infrastructure with mobile and opportunistic networks, addressing challenging network conditions, and supporting promising new applications. This Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks Special Issue aims at soliciting original manuscripts on experimental & theoretical work revisiting the research areas of mobile and opportunistic networks in the context of recent developments in networking research, including new fixed network technologies and concrete use-cases (e.g., disaster situations, space environments and free Internet deployments). On the one hand, infrastructure networks are becoming more flexible and can provide a supportive environment in which mobile-to-mobile communication can flourish, e.g., improving the Quality of Experience (QoE) and energy efficiency for users and devices, respectively. On the other hand, the deployed opportunistic networks can extend the pool of available resources and increase network coverage worldwide. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, collaborative objects and the Internet of Things, machine learning, mobile and social sensing, and embedded systems design. Of special interest are contributions at the confluence of a multiple of these areas. In addition to regular research papers, in IPSN 2014, we also encourage submissions of Challenge Papers that lay out visions and future challenges in the field of information processing in sensor networks. Challenge papers are up to 6 page long and the title should start with “Challenge: … ” These submissions are reviewed based on the novelty of the concepts and potential of impacting the field. The conference features two submission tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. Authors are encouraged to read the foci of the tracks and make indications in the submission site accordingly. However, submission tracks are for review preference only. The program committees work together in the review process. Topics: The IP track focuses on algorithms, theory, and systems for information processing using networks of embedded, human-in-the-loop, or social sensors. Topics covered in the IP track include, but are not limited to: • Sensor data processing, mining, and machine learning • Data storage, management, and retrieval • Coding, compression and information theory • Detection, classification, tracking, reasoning, and decision making • Sensor tasking, control, and actuation • Theoretical foundation and fundamental bounds • Network and system architectures and protocols • Location, time, and other network services • Programming models and languages • Mobile, participatory, and social sensing • Innovative applications and deployment experiences The SPOTS track focuses on new hardware and software architectures, modeling, evaluation, deployment experiences, design methods, implementations, and tools for networked embedded sensor systems. Submissions are expected to refer to specific hardware, software, and implementations. Topics covered in the SPOTS track include, but are not limited to: • Novel components, devices and architectures for networked sensing • Innovative sensing and processing platforms including cloud, crowd, and consumer devices • Embedded software for sensor networks • System modeling, simulation, measurements, and analysis • Design tools and methodologies for sensor networks • Network health monitoring and management • Operating systems and runtime environments • User interfaces for sensing applications and systems • Case studies highlighting experiences, challenges, and comparisons of platforms and tools Submission: Submissions must be full papers. Regular submissions are at most 12 pages, including figures, tables, and references. Challenges submissions are at most 6 pages. Note that page limits are the MAXIMUM lengths. Paper qualities are not judged by length. Submissions must be in PDF format, on single-spaced 8.5" x 11" (letter) pages of two-column format, using 10-point type on 12-point (single-spaced) leading, with a maximum text block of 7" wide x 9" deep.
