This is becoming necessary in order to transition to a more sustainable energy generation and consumption and reduce its adverse effects on the environment. While more advances in areas like renewable energies and network control are necessary, advances in communication technologies, data fusion and mining, as well as scheduling and optimization are also critical in order to achieve this vision. It is anticipated that the same communication technologies that have revolutionized our way of life in the past decades, ranging from sensor networks, mobile Internet, cloud computing, smart phones and many others, will have direct applicability to Smart Grid. Many off-the-shelf and commercial communication technologies may be ready for deployment in the Smart Grid today. Examples include the use of wireless communications to collect and exchange information about electric quality, consumption, pricing, etc. However, allowing greater flexibility in sharing information in a secure and reliable fashion still poses a number of challenges. Furthermore, using off-the-shelves technologies may lead to inefficiencies, especially if energy management specific features are not utilized adequately in the data compression and the collection infrastructure. Questions that remain unanswered in the smart grid context, include, coverage, interference, spectrum sharing, architecture, network! topology, access control and authentication, data representation, data fusion and many more. This series of IEEE JSAC is focused on identifying the numerous communication challenges posed by the various aspects and functionalities of the Smart Grid and exploring research avenues for addressing them. Original contributions that are unpublished and not currently under review by any other journal are solicited in relevant areas of Smart Grid communications including (but not limited) to the following: • Physical and MAC layer protocols for Smart Grid applications • Spectrum sharing, coexistence and interference mitigation in Smart Grid communications • Network control for the power grid • Smart Grid sensors data fusion and mining models • Communications to support demand-response, load and pricing management • Smart Grid cyber-physical network modeling and performance analysis • Measurement data from Smart Grid testbeds and field trials • Architecture and network topology for Smart Grid applications • Cyber and physical vulnerabilities and Smart Grid security Each submission should demonstrate clear applicability to Smart Grid communications. Call for Papers Special Issue on "Current and Future Architectures, Protocols, and Services for the Internet of Things" will be published in Elsevier Computer Communications Scope The Internet of Things (IoT) started as a research topic more than a decade ago and evolved towards partial deployment in the last few years. It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical. On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which complicates the extension of the status quo. The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects. First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed. Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a sustainable future IoT. In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving open technical problems. (2) Performing thorough evaluation and comparison of existing proposals or standards. (3) Addressing integrative aspects towards a full-fledged IoT deployment. (4) Enabling new services. UCNs are spontaneous and grassroots deployments of wireless architectures (e.g., ad-hoc or infrastructure), often involving low-cost deployment. Furthermore, users in such environments tend to roam frequently. In such roaming environments, users carry equipment that plays an active role in terms of topology changes (e.g., an LTE phone which is sharing Internet access to other surrounding devices, may become active or inactive without operator control). Common to user-centric environments is a social behaviour that heavily impacts network operation from an end-to-end perspective, and on the different layers of the OSI stack. UCNs empower the end-user as a new Internet stakeholder and not just as a consumer and producer of content. User-centric networking technologies can be applied to a wide range of scenarios, encompassing: i) sharing subscribed broadband Internet access; ii) providing support for better Internet connectivity; iii) allowing the use of communication services even in the absence of reliable Internet access; iv) assisting networking services based on user involvement for the detection and repair of communication problems. The new role of an empowered end-user is disruptive in several aspects, namely: i) in the end-to-end Internet paradigm, end-user devices will actively participate as a network element in addition to being an endpoint host; ii) network boundaries of trust will need to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior; and iii) end-user devices should be capable of handling intermittent Internet connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators. There is also the need to further understand wholesale models incorporating UCNs, as well as to understand the impact of UCNs in the context of standardization. To succeed, effort is envisioned to come from multiple dimensions including 1) spectrum efficiency enhancement, 2) small cell deployment and 3) novel network architectures. First, advanced multiple antenna technology such as massive multiple-input-multiple output (MIMO), virtual MIMO, full-dimensional MIMO and 3-D beamforming are promising techniques to enhance per-user spectrum efficiency and system capacity. Second, by deploying dense small cells within the local-area range and bringing the network closer to end-users, small cell and heterogeneous networks (HetNets) can potentially improve spectrum resource reuse, spatial resource reuse and communication coverage, thus allowing future mobile networks to achieve higher data rates, while retaining the seamless connectivity and mobility of current mobile network deployments. In addition, from network side, new and novel network architectures such as soft-defined network, cloud-RAN (radio access network) and cognitive radio networks as well as the enabling technologies including virtualization in wireless networks, optical wireless integration, and distributed antenna systems can further improve network efficiency and user experience. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researches which focus on emerging wireless technologies that improve spectrum efficiency, energy efficiency and network efficiency for future mobile networks. November 2013 in Berlin unter dem Motto: "Betriebssysteme für zukünftige Rechnerarchitekturen" Vor etwa zehn Jahren begann ein Umbruch im Design von Prozessoren, der im Erreichen der vertretbaren Wärmeabgabe und des Stromverbrauchs begründet war. Dies führte zu einer Diversifizierung der Architekturen, wobei eine Vielzahl von Lösungen entwickelt und zum Teil wiederentdeckt wurde. Diese Lösungen wurden zuerst in Server- und Desktopsystemen eingesetzt, haben mittlerweile aber auch die mobilen Systeme erreicht. Dieser Umbruch sowie verkürzte Hardware-Entwicklungszyklen stellen die Entwickler von Systemsoftware vor neue Herausforderungen, da nur durch geeignete Unterstützung der Systemsoftware die Ressourcen eines Rechners effizient genutzt werden können. Unlike the traditional host-centric networking paradigm where information is obtained by contacting specified named hosts, ICN aims at providing native network primitives for efficient information retrieval by directly naming and operating on information objects. Foreseeing the need and benefits of developing the Future Internet with ICN concepts as a key ingredient, many leading research groups, both industrial and academic, have created a sizable community devoting their efforts to Information-Centric Future Internet designs and prototype implementations. To date, the work in this area has centered on ICN for (largely static) content storage. Within the wider network research area, there are those who believe ICN cannot work for real time communications, dynamic content and other network scenarios. Strong supporters, on the contrary, believe that ICN can be what comes after the current Internet. Whatever one’s stand on the matter, we observe that architectural papers in this area outweigh implementation oriented and ICN application papers. This special issue aims to address both of these issues. To that end, we seek papers that show ICN’s usefulness in a wide range of applications. We are particularly interested in the kinds of applications where ICN solutions are not immediately obvious. Papers that leave the reader thinking “I had no idea ICNs could be used this way” are particularly welcome. On the other hand, we welcome contributions that make solid arguments for places where ICNs cannot replace the current Internet architecture. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Large scale scenarios, deployment, and experimentation * Case studies of security attacks and solutions in ICN * ICN development platforms (testbeds, simulators, open-source code) and tools * Evaluation methodology challenges and advances * ICN protocol design challenges in baseline scenarios * ICN practice, including protocol implementation, empirical performance evaluation and enhancements * ICN and Cloud computing With regard to both the content and formatting style of the submissions, prospective contributors should follow the IEEE Network guidelines for authors that can be found athttp://www.comsoc.org/netmag/paper-submission-guidelines<http://dl.comsoc.org/livepubs/ni/info/authors.html>. The focus of the 2014 conference will be on embedded computer systems connecting computing with the physical world. Like the previous conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for computer architecture research. In 2014 ARCS will be organized by the Institute of Computer Engineering and will be hosted by the University of Lübeck, Germany. The proceedings of ARCS 2014 will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series. In the past, communication and control have often been seen as two independent components of a robotic system, with the robot being passive with respect to networking and active in relation to other sensory-motor choices. Similarly, in networking, control actions other than communications are seen as external to the network device, and modeled as passive aspects of the system. Only limited work has addressed the inclusion of control mechanisms inside the classical ISO/OSI stack or through cross-layering approaches (mainly for energy consumption and mobility control). However, in WNR, adopting this differentiation between control and communication does not allow to fully exploit the capabilities of the system, since it directly impacts on the quality and reliability of robots' information flows. Networking and control need to be put in closed loop with each other} in order to fully unleash the power of a multi-robot system in terms of coordination and cooperative behaviors. In particular, controlled mobility can be play an important role supporting networking, and, in turn, boosting information sharing and robot to robot interactions. Similarly, networking parameters and policies need to continually adapt to the needs and constraints of the tasks the robots are engaged in. The MC3 workshop aims to address these issues, focusing on the investigation of the mutual interplay and adaptation between control and communication in networked systems featuring the presence of (heterogeneous) multiple mobile robots and sensors. The workshop will provide a contribution laying the pathway towards the information-centric design of cooperative, autonomous and self-organized robotic networks. Topics of Interest ---------------------- The workshop aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design and implementation of architectures, algorithms, and protocols for current and future applications of Wireless Networked Robotics, with an emphasis on the use of mobility. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in all aspects of this discipline. Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact, promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure, where interaction and communication occur opportunistically. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking - pervasive social networking PUBLICATION AND INDEXING Papers are published in the combined proceedings of the IEEE PerCom Workshops and will appear on IEEExplore. According to Google’s metrics, such proceedings are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index, respectively equal to 32 and 43. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of pervasive computing. In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a “destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed by Scopus). Humanity relies on the Internet to access information, obtain services, manage finances, and communicate with others. Businesses use the Internet to transact commerce with consumers and other businesses. Governments depend on communication networks for their daily operation and service delivery. The military depends on the Global Information Grid to execute network centric operations and warfare. Hence, in addition to transportation-infrastructure, power-generation, and distribution-grid public/private networks, the Internet and other publicly accessible communication networks are today critical infrastructures upon which our lives and prosperity depend. Given this dependence, vulnerabilities of communication networks and the Internet can significantly impact our lives. The dependence on communication networks and the Internet makes them an attractive target for attacks and intrusions attempting to either obtain information or disrupt service of individuals, businesses, government and military. These networks and services are also susceptible to accidents, faults or natural disasters that can disrupt service. Examples of natural disasters that compromised the network infrastructure are the hurricanes Sandy and Katrina. In the face of these difficulties, the need for greater resilience has been recognized for wireline and wireless networks and for the Internet. Resilience has classically been defined as the ability of the network to provide and maintain an acceptable level of service in the face of faults, accidents, attacks and natural disasters. This subject has attracted the attention of researchers, industry and governments around the world. Today, resilience can be considered an essential characteristic in the design and operation of networks to withstand the intrusions described above. Furthermore, we must now expand resilience to include new requirements, such as scalability, dynamic and opportunistic topologies, and global interoperation and interdependence among networks. This feature topic call-for-papers solicits recent, relevant works related to disaster resilience, especially in emerging networks. The main goal is to provide for the *IEEE Communications Magazine *an overview of the state-of-the-art of resilience, and to identify the new challenges from emerging network infrastructures in terms of scalability, heterogeneity, and dynamicity. Works addressing resilience issues in the context of new communication technologies, such as software-defined networks, cognitive radio and emerging optical technologies are of particular interest. *Topics* Articles describing original research and development as well as survey articles related to disaster resilience are solicited. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking - pervasive social networking PUBLICATION AND INDEXING Papers are published in the combined proceedings of the IEEE PerCom Workshops and will appear on IEEExplore. According to Google’s metrics, such proceedings are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index, respectively equal to 32 and 43. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of pervasive computing. In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a “destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed by Scopus). PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and should not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral presentation at the workshop is strictly required. The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types. Furthermore, MMSys provides an avenue for communicating research that addresses multimedia systems holistically. Multimedia systems permeate many aspects of our daily life, and are steadily developed further. MMSys is a venue for researchers who explore: - Complete multimedia systems that provide a new kind of multimedia experience or systems whose overall performance improves the state-of-the-art through new research results in one of more components, or - Enhancements to one or more system components that provide a documented improvement over the state-of-the-art for handling continuous media or time-dependent services. Such individual system components include: - Operating systems - Distributed architectures and protocol enhancements - Domain languages, development tools and abstraction layers - Using new architectures or computing resources for multimedia - New or improved I/O architectures or I/O devices, innovative uses and algorithms for their operation - Representation of continuous or time-dependent media - Metrics, measures and measurement tools to assess performance This touches aspects of many hot topics: DASH, games, virtual environments, augmented reality, 3D video, immersive systems, telepresence, multi- and many-core, GPGPUs, mobile streaming, P2P, Clouds, cyber-physical systems – explore the connections on http://www.mmsys.org All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the technical program committee. Full papers will be evaluated for their scientific quality. Accepted papers must reach a high scientific standard and document unpublished research. Best papers' authors will be invited to submit a modified version of their contribution to the ACM TOMCCAP (Transaction on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications) journal. Student travel grants are available for a limited number of full-time student participants attending the conference. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be between 6 and 12 pages long (in PDF format) prepared in the ACM style and written in English. The unusual length of MMSys papers is meant to enable authors to present entire multimedia systems or present research work that builds on considerable amounts of earlier work in a self-contained manner. MMSys papers are published in the ACM Digital Library; they are available for just as long as journal papers and authors should not feel compelled by space limitations to publish extended works on top of an MMSys paper. Authors who submit very specific, detailed research work that does not require such brevity are encouraged to use less than 12 pages.
