The D2D concept is built around the idea of allowing the wireless devices to communicate with one another via direct D2D links over licensed or unlicensed spectrum. Unlike traditional short-range D2D technologies such as Bluetooth or Zigbee, D2D in cellular systems is expected to provide high capacity and guaranteed QoS over long ranges. D2D is also expected to lead to novel wireless applications such as proximity services and robust public safety communications. Indeed, D2D is seen as a key feature of 5G wireless systems. The context is the information characterizing the situation of an entity and providing information about the present status of people, places, things and devices in the environment. An entity is a person, device, place, or object relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, such as location, time, activities, and services. Context awareness allows for customization or creation of the application to match the preferences of the individual user, based on current context such as enterprise environment or home network. > A first area of interest concerns the Person Context Awareness. The recent emergence of the so-called social networks, the widespread presence of smartphones equipped by heterogeneous sensors, such as GPS receivers, accelerometers, compasses, microphones and cameras, and the availability of geo-referenced information enable analysis of new context definitions that may concern individual, social, and urban scenarios. Indeed, recently, the available information may include mobility patterns of people and also physical activities (movements), physical status, and emotional conditions. This information is often acquired and shared, in real time, by users. Allowing the reliable extraction and sharing of that information is a fundamental research issue with important applications. It could improve the experience of individual, communities, organizations, and societies by adapting context to the environment (home, hospitals, campuses, offices, etc.). > Another area in this field deals with the Object Context Awareness. Context awareness may be implemented using quite different aspects under different environments, conditions, and layers, such as layered context-aware architecture for middleware, context awareness for connecting entities of network components, and infrastructure (Internet protocol, handoff management, sensing, network requirements, network controls and network implementation). > This feature topic’s scope will include both computing and communications networks, especially mobile computing networks. The research involved in developing applications for these classes of problems lies at the intersection of several diverse disciplines, including sensing systems, signal processing, machine learning and data mining, data management, and large-scale distributed systems - for both online as well as offline analysis. †In this workshop, co-located with AMC SenSys 2013, we will include state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of extracting knowledge, by mining data from sensor networks in large-scale settings. The goal of the workshop is to establish a new research community and a venue for researchers, practitioners, and academics to present their results in these disciplines. We expect this workshop to be a long-term, continued venue for this research community, and to also lead to the setup of appropriate special issues and journals. As part of this workshop, we will include both peer-reviewed and invited papers. All accepted papers will be included in the ACM digital library. Embedded in a beautiful, unspoiled natural landscape the former residence of counts, dukes and grand dukes is now home to 160,000 people and a vibrant, modern city - a university city with 4 universities and more than 20,000 students. Going to Oldenburg is easy: Bremen airport is only 45 minutes away and is just one hop from the major international airport hubs Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris. Other major airports in easy reach are in Hamburg, Hanover and Münster/Osnabrück. SUBMISSIONS and PUBLICATION The conference invites the submission of original work through the Confy paper submission system in one or more of the following formats: full and short papers, workshops, posters, interactive demonstrations. Pervasive Health 2014 will accept submissions in the following categories: Full papers (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. Short Papers and Posters (up to 4 pages submissions): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. In addition, short papers are not expected to include a comprehensive review of related work. Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference. Poster category combines submissions reporting on the progress of ongoing research and insights into the lessons learned from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. Medical Perspective Abstracts (1-2 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in traditional medicine whose results are interesting to Pervasive Health audience. Submissions should include a description of work done, intended future work, alongside a specific research question or challenge that you would like to be discussed at the colloquium. Each paper will be blind, peer-reviewed by members of the Pervasive Health 2014 program committee with additional expert reviewers drawn from relevant research domains. Submissions will be evaluated based on their originality, significance of the contribution to the field, technical correctness and presentation. The paper should make explicit how the work offers unique and substantial contribution beyond what has already been published or submitted. Discussions revolved around both the state of the art and around future directions of inter-vehicle communication research, from physical layer optimizations to novel applications of vehicular networks and from microscopic evaluation metrics to problems of scale, crime, and privacy. It will be the goal of this new Fachgespräch to again bring together talented young researchers to follow-up on the discussions. Over the last few years, significant efforts are being carried out by industry, academia and government agencies to improve driving safety, increase vehicle traffic efficiency and decrease fuel consumption by exploiting vehicular communications and networking technologies. These technologies, which are generally referred to as VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), include Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications and can be based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular systems. Goals The goal of this event is to give an interdisciplinary overview on recent advances and early results in the area of vehicular inter-networking technologies and related applications. This seminar will include and solicit contributions addressing technical and research issues, development projects, standardization activities, and field trials on VANET technologies and applications. The objective is to discuss recent advancements in this highly active research area, to highlight interdisciplinary challenges in the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and to share lessons learned from field trial experiences. Scope of Contributions: Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (2-4 pages) presenting new research results related to the theory or practice of vehicular communications and applications. Manuscripts formatted according to IEEE conference layout should be submitted as PDF documents. Accepted contributions will be published in a technical report (thus, the copyright will remain with the authors). It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical. On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which complicates the extension of the status quo. The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects. First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed. Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a sustainable future IoT. In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving open technical problems. (2) Performing thorough evaluation and comparison of existing proposals or standards. (3) Addressing integrative aspects towards a full-fledged IoT deployment. (4) Enabling new services. SenSys 2013 Doctoral Colloquium November 13 November 2013 (afternoon), Rome, Italy. http://sensys.acm.org/2013/doccol.html The Doctoral Colloquium (DC) of SenSys'13 is to provide a friendly, supportive, and constructive environment where PhD students can present their research-in-progress for an open discussion guided by a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners. Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least four months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a half-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by round table discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In addition to the DC presentation, the participants will be given a chance to present a poster at the poster session during the main conference. Submissions Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress and including a 100-word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. The submission site can be found at: https://sensys2013.cs.virginia.edu/doctoralCol/index.php Research summaries will be reviewed by the chairs and panel members. If the work is accepted, a student may be expected to make clarifications and improvements to the research summary by the camera-ready deadline. Registration Accepted participants of the doctoral colloquium shall register with the SenSys workshop registration rate (if applicable at the student rate). ICTs has been rapidly adopted by tourist businesses and authorities in a bid to gaining advantage over competitors. e-Tourism emerged as a promising revision of the previous business models and initiatives related to tourism, with the advent of web technologies. Mobile tourism extended the notion of e-Tourism to meet the vision of tourist services provision to nomadic users with no spatialtemporal restrictions. The recent developments in mobile hardware and software allowed for the provision of a new range of personalized, context-aware services that were not previously feasible. Further on, improvements in the area of mobile communications and networking have increased the availability of wireless bandwidth thereby providing new possibilities for exchanging and sharing data among tourists. Smartphones, mobile and wearable sensors, and other portable systems are commonly used to collect and exchange data as well as to infer personal, social and environmental context. Along this line, pervasive technologies open profound opportunities for the tourism industry and have the potential to revolutionize the tourist experience, delivering added-value services to tourists 'on the move'. However, before such applications can be widely deployed and used, several fundamental technical, social and business challenges need to be addressed. The proposed SI aims at publishing outstanding articles describing innovative applications and frameworks that enable the use of mobile and pervasive technologies in tourism and outline the state of the art in this particularly promising area of research. We invite research papers as well as papers which address challenges in developing industrial-strength mobile and pervasive applications. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with a focus on real-world experiments and deployments. Included are, nonetheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit poster and demo abstracts (4 pages, Springer format, 9 or 10 point font size). Accepted abstracts will be included in the proceedings published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering (LNEE). Accepted abstracts will be indexed by all major digital libraries (e.g., ISI, Scopus, Google Scholar). The submission of the thumbnail is not mandatory and can be included or not at sole discretion of the authors. Posters should be prepared for A0 paper and portrait orientation, show the same title as the abstract, and include names and affiliation of the authors. Call for Position Papers DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM at AutomotiveUI 2013 Eindhoven, The Netherlands, October 27-30, 2013 Submissions due: September 8, 2013 ************************************************************************ The AutomotiveUI 2013 Doctoral Consortium aims at bringing together PhD students working on topics related to the field of automotive user interfaces and interactive vehicular applications, offering them an opportunity to present and discuss their research to an audience of peers and senior faculty. PhD students will receive feedback from their peers about the appropriateness of their idea/topic/research approach, and will enjoy discussing their research with senior members of the community. It is scheduled prior to the main conference program on Sunday, October 27, 2013. The topics of the AutomotiveUI 2013 doctoral colloquium are the ones of the main conference, including > new concepts for (multi-modal) in-car user interfaces, > input/output while driving, interaction with navigation systems, > evaluation and benchmarking of in-car user interfaces, > assistive technology in the vehicular context, > methods, tools, standards for automotive user interface research, > detecting and estimating user intentions, cognitive load, distraction > subliminal techniques for workload reduction, > biometrics and physiological sensors as a user interface component, > applications and user interfaces for inter-vehicle communication, > in-car gaming and entertainment, > different user groups and user group characteristics, > in-situ studies of automotive user interface approaches, > driving safety research using real vehicles and simulator studies. *** ELIGIBILITY *** The AutomotiveUI 2013 doctoral colloquium welcomes contributions from doctoral students currently registered in a PhD program. Ideal candidates should have worked on their dissertation for some months; thus, they should have chosen a research topic and possibly have also selected theoretical and methodological approaches. Selection of participants will be based on the quality of the submission and its relevance to the conference topics of interest. *** TRAVEL GRANTS *** We intend to provide travel grants to allow more students to take part in the DC; however, at this time we are still negotiating with potential sponsors so that we cannot guarantee at all to offer travel grants. In response to this emerging research direction, the aim of this work- shop is to achieve a common understanding of the symbiosis between dri- vers, cars, and infrastructure from a global point of view (referred to as "collective driving"). The central objective is to provoke an active debate on the impact, role, and adequacy of using unaware or below threshold information in VE, teleoperation, or augmented reality. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * The impact of unaware/subliminal cues on user?s feelings, attitudes, and behavior. * Subliminal cues and the user?s sense of presence or immersion in VE. * Subliminal cues and improvement of a user?s performance in VE although it is generally accepted that such stimuli are weak. * Systematic approach to taxonomy (i.e., definition and terminology) of subliminal perception and other interchangeable or contrary terms, including implicit, supraliminal, priming, conscious, preconscious, unconscious, subconscious, below awareness, (etc.) in the context of VE/teleoperation systems or the automotive domain. * Philosophy or rationale for the use of subliminal interfaces in VE, teleoperation, or augmented reality. * Ethical issues of application of subliminal perception in VE, teleoperation systems or vehicular interfaces. * Social interaction based on subliminal/unaware cues. * Socio-technical issues such as social acceptance, preference, privacy issues, security issues, and attitudes towards technologies that include cues which the user is unaware of. * Guidelines of the application of subliminal perception in VE, teleoperation, or augmented reality. * Case study of application of subliminal perception/cues/interfaces in VE, teleoperation, automotive applications, or augmented reality in general. * Subliminal cues and interfaces such as head-mounted displays, vibrotactile transducers, olfactory stimulation, brain-computer interfaces (BCI). * Domain-specific approach to subliminal perception (e.g., remote vehicles, driving simulator, aviation, robotics, or other teleopera- tion tasks). * Modalities: visual perception (flashing picture, video, text, etc.), auditory perception (compressed speech, music, non-speech sounds, etc.), haptic/tactile perception, olfactory, or fusion of those. * Evaluation and validation methodologies for the effects of subliminal information (qualitative, quantitative validations). * Characteristics of subliminally delivered information (e.g., reachable bandwidth, natural bounds, complexity of information, speed of perception, strength/duration/frequency of subliminal interaction). * Subliminally delivered information and its relationship with other constructs - cognitive workload, perceived performance, situation awareness, emotions, etc. * Individual differences in threshold of subliminal perception (age, gender, characteristics, (dis)abilities, cognitive style, cultural/ ethnologic background, etc.). * Risk assessment of the use of subliminal interfaces and strategies to reduce its risk. Preliminary Call for Papers: ACM e-Energy 2014 Cambridge, UK, June 11-13 2014 Computing and communication technologies impact energy systems in two distinct ways. The exponential growth in deployment of these technologies has made them large-scale energy consumers. Therefore, new architectures, technologies and systems are being developed and deployed to make computing and networked system more energy efficient. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, these technologies are at the center of the on-going revolution in next-generation "smart" and sustainable energy systems. They measure, monitor and control energy systems such as the smart grid; inform and shape human demand; aid in the prediction, deployment, storage and control of energy resources; and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers measure, analyze, and collectively control system elements. The fifth International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy), to be held in Cambridge UK in June 2014, aims to be the premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of computing and communication for smart energy systems (including the smart grid), and in energy-efficient computing and communication systems. By bringing together researchers in a high-quality single-track conference with significant opportunities for individual and small-group interaction, it will serve as a major forum for presentations and discussions that will shape the future of this area. We solicit high-quality papers in the area of computing and communication for the Smart Grid and energy-efficient computing and communications. We welcome submissions describing theoretical advances as well as system design, implementation and experimentation. ACM e-Energy is committed to a fair, timely, and thorough review process providing authors of submitted papers with sound and detailed feedback.
