Commercial, government organizations, and individuals depend on the ability to automatically mine data from different types of sensor platforms (from large sensor networks to an individual's smartphone) in order to monitor, alert, learn from, and in some cases affect and control our surroundings. The research involved in developing applications for these classes of problems lies at the intersection of several diverse disciplines, including sensing systems, signal processing, machine learning and data mining, data management, and large-scale distributed systems - for both online as well as offline analysis. †In this workshop, co-located with AMC SenSys 2013, we will include state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of extracting knowledge, by mining data from sensor networks in large-scale settings. The goal of the workshop is to establish a new research community and a venue for researchers, practitioners, and academics to present their results in these disciplines. We expect this workshop to be a long-term, continued venue for this research community, and to also lead to the setup of appropriate special issues and journals. The overall goal of the Pervasive Health Conference is to take a multidisciplinary approach to Pervasive Healthcare Technology research and development. The Pervasive Healthcare Community is addressing a broad scope of research topics and concerns: • identify and understand problems from a technological, social, and medical perspective (with a particular emphasis on understanding and supporting patient needs); • design, implementation, and evaluation of supporting hardware and software infrastructures, algorithms, and applications; and • organisational strategies that facilitate integration of Pervasive Healthcare Technology into the healthcare enterprise. Pervasive healthcare technologies seek to respond to a variety of these pressures by successfully integrating them within existing health care environments. Technologies, standards and procedures on their own provide little and or no meaningful service. It is essential that pervasive healthcare environments, through a combined approach of data collection, data correlation and data presentation, assist health care professionals in delivering high levels of patient care, and empower individuals and their families for self-care and health management. Embedded in a beautiful, unspoiled natural landscape the former residence of counts, dukes and grand dukes is now home to 160,000 people and a vibrant, modern city - a university city with 4 universities and more than 20,000 students. Going to Oldenburg is easy: Bremen airport is only 45 minutes away and is just one hop from the major international airport hubs Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris. Other major airports in easy reach are in Hamburg, Hanover and Münster/Osnabrück. SUBMISSIONS and PUBLICATION The conference invites the submission of original work through the Confy paper submission system in one or more of the following formats: full and short papers, workshops, posters, interactive demonstrations. Pervasive Health 2014 will accept submissions in the following categories: Full papers (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. Short Papers and Posters (up to 4 pages submissions): short papers are envisioned as submissions describing original research that is much more focused and smaller in scope than full research papers. Short papers are not expected to provide all the details on the research, but rather focus on the most innovative and salient aspects. In addition, short papers are not expected to include a comprehensive review of related work. Short papers will be presented during the main track of the conference. Poster category combines submissions reporting on the progress of ongoing research and insights into the lessons learned from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. Medical Perspective Abstracts (1-2 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in traditional medicine whose results are interesting to Pervasive Health audience. This track will give Pervasive Health attendees a way to learn about ongoing research initiatives, both in medicine and technology, and will provide presenters with an excellent opportunity to receive invaluable direct feedback from experts. Demos (2 pages submissions) - The demos track will showcase the latest developments and prototypes related to the topics of interest of the conference. The expected demo submissions should describe the technical details of the demo alongside its contribution to the healthcare domain. Workshop proposals (2 pages submissions) - Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss work in progress and explore opportunities for new research related to pervasive healthcare. Doctoral Colloquium (4 pages) – This event will enable doctoral students to present and reflect on their work alongside other doctoral students and a panel of experts. Submissions should include a description of work done, intended future work, alongside a specific research question or challenge that you would like to be discussed at the colloquium. Each paper will be blind, peer-reviewed by members of the Pervasive Health 2014 program committee with additional expert reviewers drawn from relevant research domains. Submissions will be evaluated based on their originality, significance of the contribution to the field, technical correctness and presentation. The paper should make explicit how the work offers unique and substantial contribution beyond what has already been published or submitted. The acceptance rate was around 30% for Pervasive Health 2011, 2012 and 2013. All accepted submissions will be published in IEEE Xplore Digital Library (pending). Authors will also be invited to submit their camera-ready papers in ACM format, to be published in ACM Digital Library (pending). For new technologies or infrastructure designs to be adopted, they must not be only based on sound engineering performance considerations but also present the right economic incentives. Recent changes in regulations of the telecommunication industry make such economic considerations even more urgent. For instance, new concerns such as network neutrality have a significant impact on the evolution of communication networks. At the same time, communication networks and networked systems support increasing economic activity based on applications and services such as cloud computing, social networks, and peer-to-peer networks. These applications pose new challenges such as the development of good pricing and incentive mechanisms to promote effective system-wide behavior. In relation to these applications, security and privacy also require consideration of economic aspects to be fully understood. The aim of this theme section is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions on the application of economic and game-theoretic models and principles to address challenges in the development of networks and network-based applications and services. We invite submission of original completed work not currently under review by any other journal describing theoretical/methodological contributions or applications to cases of interest. Communications technologies will be critical to achieving large-scale energy savings in all domains including communications, manufacturing, transportation, buildings, and electricity generation and distribution. In this context, there is a critical need for new ways of reducing energy consumption of communication systems if the current trajectory of traffic growth and supporting anywhere/anytime/anything access is to continue unabated. Energy costs are significant in a broad range of communications networks ranging from data center networks (where network equipment consume about 15% of the overall energy used) to cellular networks (where energy use of base stations amounts to around 70% of the t! otal). The need for ‘greener’ communications technologies has been recognized by the research community as demonstrated by the significant research efforts in this area during the last years. However, many challenges still remain to be addressed. The special issue of Computer Networks on Green Communications will focus on recent research results in the area of green communications. We seek papers describing research results that show significant energy savings in communications systems. We also seek survey and tutorial papers in green communications. Discussions revolved around both the state of the art and around future directions of inter-vehicle communication research, from physical layer optimizations to novel applications of vehicular networks and from microscopic evaluation metrics to problems of scale, crime, and privacy. It will be the goal of this new Fachgespräch to again bring together talented young researchers to follow-up on the discussions. Over the last few years, significant efforts are being carried out by industry, academia and government agencies to improve driving safety, increase vehicle traffic efficiency and decrease fuel consumption by exploiting vehicular communications and networking technologies. These technologies, which are generally referred to as VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), include Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications and can be based on short- and medium-range communications as well as on cellular systems. Goals The goal of this event is to give an interdisciplinary overview on recent advances and early results in the area of vehicular inter-networking technologies and related applications. This seminar will include and solicit contributions addressing technical and research issues, development projects, standardization activities, and field trials on VANET technologies and applications. The objective is to discuss recent advancements in this highly active research area, to highlight interdisciplinary challenges in the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and to share lessons learned from field trial experiences. Scope of Contributions: Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (2-4 pages) presenting new research results related to the theory or practice of vehicular communications and applications. It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical. On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which complicates the extension of the status quo. The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects. First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed. Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a sustainable future IoT. In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving open technical problems. SenSys 2013 Doctoral Colloquium November 13 November 2013 (afternoon), Rome, Italy. http://sensys.acm.org/2013/doccol.html The Doctoral Colloquium (DC) of SenSys'13 is to provide a friendly, supportive, and constructive environment where PhD students can present their research-in-progress for an open discussion guided by a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners. Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least four months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a half-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by round table discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In addition to the DC presentation, the participants will be given a chance to present a poster at the poster session during the main conference. Submissions Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress and including a 100-word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. The submission site can be found at: https://sensys2013.cs.virginia.edu/doctoralCol/index.php Research summaries will be reviewed by the chairs and panel members. If the work is accepted, a student may be expected to make clarifications and improvements to the research summary by the camera-ready deadline. Note that the research summaries will not be formally published, but hard copies will be made available to colloquium delegates. A prize for best student presentation will be awarded by the panel. Registration Accepted participants of the doctoral colloquium shall register with the SenSys workshop registration rate (if applicable at the student rate). The registration is free if the student also attends and has registered for the SenSys conference. Participants can also apply for SenSys travel grants. ICTs has been rapidly adopted by tourist businesses and authorities in a bid to gaining advantage over competitors. e-Tourism emerged as a promising revision of the previous business models and initiatives related to tourism, with the advent of web technologies. Mobile tourism extended the notion of e-Tourism to meet the vision of tourist services provision to nomadic users with no spatialtemporal restrictions. The recent developments in mobile hardware and software allowed for the provision of a new range of personalized, context-aware services that were not previously feasible. Further on, improvements in the area of mobile communications and networking have increased the availability of wireless bandwidth thereby providing new possibilities for exchanging and sharing data among tourists. Smartphones, mobile and wearable sensors, and other portable systems are commonly used to collect and exchange data as well as to infer personal, social and environmental context. Along this line, pervasive technologies open profound opportunities for the tourism industry and have the potential to revolutionize the tourist experience, delivering added-value services to tourists 'on the move'. However, before such applications can be widely deployed and used, several fundamental technical, social and business challenges need to be addressed. The proposed SI aims at publishing outstanding articles describing innovative applications and frameworks that enable the use of mobile and pervasive technologies in tourism and outline the state of the art in this particularly promising area of research. We invite research papers as well as papers which address challenges in developing industrial-strength mobile and pervasive applications. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with a focus on real-world experiments and deployments. Included are, nonetheless, new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit poster and demo abstracts (4 pages, Springer format, 9 or 10 point font size). Accepted abstracts will be included in the proceedings published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering (LNEE). Accepted abstracts will be indexed by all major digital libraries (e.g., ISI, Scopus, Google Scholar). Good posters describe exciting ideas for which some preliminary results are available. Authors can also include in their submission an appendix showing a thumbnail of the poster content. The submission of the thumbnail is not mandatory and can be included or not at sole discretion of the authors. Posters should be prepared for A0 paper and portrait orientation, show the same title as the abstract, and include names and affiliation of the authors. Demonstrations: Demonstrations should showcase innovative research and applications related to the calls for papers. The submission should include an appendix describing the intended setup of the proposed demo and its main requirements (e.g., power supply, space, etc.). PhD students will receive feedback from their peers about the appropriateness of their idea/topic/research approach, and will enjoy discussing their research with senior members of the community. Selection of participants will be based on the quality of the submission and its relevance to the conference topics of interest. *** TRAVEL GRANTS *** We intend to provide travel grants to allow more students to take part in the DC; however, at this time we are still negotiating with potential sponsors so that we cannot guarantee at all to offer travel grants. Commercial, government organizations, and individuals depend on the ability to automatically mine data from different types of sensor platforms (from large sensor networks to an individual's smartphone) in order to monitor, alert, learn from, and in some cases affect and control our surroundings. The research involved in developing applications for these classes of problems lies at the intersection of several diverse disciplines, including sensing systems, signal processing, machine learning and data mining, data management, and large-scale distributed systems - for both online as well as offline analysis. †In this workshop, co-located with AMC SenSys 2013, we will include state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of extracting knowledge, by mining data from sensor networks in large-scale settings. The goal of the workshop is to establish a new research community and a venue for researchers, practitioners, and academics to present their results in these disciplines. We expect this workshop to be a long-term, continued venue for this research community, and to also lead to the setup of appropriate special issues and journals. As part of this workshop, we will include both peer-reviewed and invited papers. All accepted papers will be included in the ACM digital library. In response to this emerging research direction, the aim of this work- shop is to achieve a common understanding of the symbiosis between dri- vers, cars, and infrastructure from a global point of view (referred to as "collective driving"). We apologize for any cross-postings. 2nd Call for Papers Special Issue of Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments Subliminal/unaware cues and perception of presence in virtual, tele- presence, and automotive environments Submissions due: extended to August 15, 2013 ************************************************************************* This special issue focuses on the role of a special category of sensory cues in the sense of 'presence': subliminal and unaware sensory stimuli in Virtual Environments (VE). The central objective is to provoke an active debate on the impact, role, and adequacy of using unaware or below threshold information in VE, teleoperation, or augmented reality. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * The impact of unaware/subliminal cues on user?s feelings, attitudes, and behavior. * Subliminal cues and the user?s sense of presence or immersion in VE. * Subliminal cues and improvement of a user?s performance in VE although it is generally accepted that such stimuli are weak. * Systematic approach to taxonomy (i.e., definition and terminology) of subliminal perception and other interchangeable or contrary terms, including implicit, supraliminal, priming, conscious, preconscious, unconscious, subconscious, below awareness, (etc.) in the context of VE/teleoperation systems or the automotive domain. * Philosophy or rationale for the use of subliminal interfaces in VE, teleoperation, or augmented reality. * Ethical issues of application of subliminal perception in VE, teleoperation systems or vehicular interfaces. * Social interaction based on subliminal/unaware cues. * Socio-technical issues such as social acceptance, preference, privacy issues, security issues, and attitudes towards technologies that include cues which the user is unaware of. * Guidelines of the application of subliminal perception in VE, teleoperation, or augmented reality. * Case study of application of subliminal perception/cues/interfaces in VE, teleoperation, automotive applications, or augmented reality in general. * Subliminal cues and interfaces such as head-mounted displays, vibrotactile transducers, olfactory stimulation, brain-computer interfaces (BCI). * Domain-specific approach to subliminal perception (e.g., remote vehicles, driving simulator, aviation, robotics, or other teleopera- tion tasks). * Modalities: visual perception (flashing picture, video, text, etc.), auditory perception (compressed speech, music, non-speech sounds, etc.), haptic/tactile perception, olfactory, or fusion of those. * Evaluation and validation methodologies for the effects of subliminal information (qualitative, quantitative validations). * Characteristics of subliminally delivered information (e.g., reachable bandwidth, natural bounds, complexity of information, speed of perception, strength/duration/frequency of subliminal interaction). * Subliminally delivered information and its relationship with other constructs - cognitive workload, perceived performance, situation awareness, emotions, etc. * Individual differences in threshold of subliminal perception (age, gender, characteristics, (dis)abilities, cognitive style, cultural/ ethnologic background, etc.). * Risk assessment of the use of subliminal interfaces and strategies to reduce its risk. Preliminary Call for Papers: ACM e-Energy 2014 Cambridge, UK, June 11-13 2014 Computing and communication technologies impact energy systems in two distinct ways. The exponential growth in deployment of these technologies has made them large-scale energy consumers. Therefore, new architectures, technologies and systems are being developed and deployed to make computing and networked system more energy efficient. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, these technologies are at the center of the on-going revolution in next-generation "smart" and sustainable energy systems. They measure, monitor and control energy systems such as the smart grid; inform and shape human demand; aid in the prediction, deployment, storage and control of energy resources; and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers measure, analyze, and collectively control system elements. The fifth International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy), to be held in Cambridge UK in June 2014, aims to be the premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of computing and communication for smart energy systems (including the smart grid), and in energy-efficient computing and communication systems. By bringing together researchers in a high-quality single-track conference with significant opportunities for individual and small-group interaction, it will serve as a major forum for presentations and discussions that will shape the future of this area. We solicit high-quality papers in the area of computing and communication for the Smart Grid and energy-efficient computing and communications. We welcome submissions describing theoretical advances as well as system design, implementation and experimentation. ACM e-Energy is committed to a fair, timely, and thorough review process providing authors of submitted papers with sound and detailed feedback. The recommender systems we refer to as a broad spectrum of applications involving recommendation, information valuation, filtering, summarization, etc. in various contexts from e-commerce to social networking and mobile applications. This workshop aims to provide a scholarly venue for researchers and practitioners to exchange the advances of crowdsourcing and human computation technologies and applications, with an emphasis on the applications in recommendation systems. The potentials and advantages of crowdsourcing and human computation have been explored for a number of areas such as computer-human interaction and information retrieval, we believe that these advances can also benefit the research of recommender systems at large. Submissions are invited on theories, experiments, and explorations of how human (or the crowd) can involve the process of information valuation and recommendation. Topics include, but are not limited to the use of crowds and/or human computation, in the following areas of research: Ground-truth annotation - Annotator user interface - Games with a purpose (GWAP) or other annotation-as-byproduct designs - Effective learning from crowd inputs - Mining from social media Large-scale evaluation of recommender systems - Recommender evaluation metrics and studies - Personalization support - User modeling and profiling Crowdsourcing and human computation methodologies - Security, privacy, trust, and reputation management - Quality assurance and cheat detection - Economics and incentive structures - Programming languages, tools and platforms providing enhanced support - Empirical and case studies of using crowdsourcing for recommendation - Policy and cultural issues related to crowd recommendation ----------- SUBMISSIONS ----------- CrowdRec 2013 welcomes submissions of full papers, as well as short papers reporting work-in-progress. Full papers must be no longer than 6 pages (inclusive of all figures, references, and appendices). Short papers are 2 pages, and will be presented as Posters in an interactive setting. All submissions must be written in English and must be formatted according to the standard ACM SIG proceedings format. Papers will be judged on their relevance, technical content and correctness, and the clarity of presentation of the submitted work. Please see the workshop website for detailed instructions of paper submission. ------------ PUBLICATIONS ------------ Accepted full and short papers will appear in the ACM Recommender Systems 2013 Proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. Each accepted paper requires at least one of the authors to obtain a workshop registration. Also, one of the authors (or a qualified substitute) must give a presentation of the paper at the workshop. Mobile cloud computing further the integrations of personal computing, distributed computing, cloud computing, and wireless technologies. One of the challenging areas is the vehicle communications and the enabled applications. The continuously increasing interactions between communications, computing and sensing devices in vehicle systems have introduced many interesting yet difficult issues in diverse research areas including computing platform, connectivity, routing and broadcast, channel and link access, collaborations, capacity planning, scheduling, security and privacy preservation, and so on. This symposium is devoted to cover original contributions in the design, development, and analysis of novel techniques in architectures, platforms, protocols and applications in the joint areas of mobile computing and vehicle communications.
