It is hence crucial to increase network capacity to accommodate these bandwidth consuming applications and services. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a promising concept to improve user experiences and resource utilization in cellular networks, both for licensed and unlicensed spectrum. It enables two mobile devices in proximity of each other to establish a direct local link and to bypass the base station or access point. D2D communication may either be network-controlled where the operator manages the switching between direct and conventional cellular links, or the direct links may be managed by the devices without operator control. D2D allows combining infrastructure-mode and ad hoc communication. Device-to-device communications may have advantages such as: 1) improved performance for devices; 2) improved spectrum reuse and system throughput; 3) offloading in cellular networks; 4) improved energy efficiency; 5) extended coverage; 6) creation of new services. It also poses new problems and challenges. A issue is how to share resources dynamically (e.g. spectrum and energy) between cellular communication and ad hoc D2D communication to accommodate larger volumes of traffic and to provide better service to users. Other challenges include: identification of services for which D2D communication is useful; radio resource allocation and resource management; self-organizing direct links; proximity-based offloading, and capacity evaluation and performance comparison. The special issue addresses research advances that enable D2D communications in cellular networks. The goal is to report on the most up-to-date contributions in this area. With rapid evolution of networking technologies and architectures, the measurement community can offer invaluable insights and improve understanding where lacking, especially in cases where validation of existing results is needed. Following on from the success of ExtremeCom 2009 - The Midnight Sun Expedition in Laponia, Sweden, ExtremeCom 2010 - The Himalayan Expedition in Dharamsala, India, ExtremeCom 2011 - The Amazon Expedition in Manaus Brazil, ExtremeCom 2012 - The Alpine Expedition, we now offer ExtremeCom 2013 The Volcanic Expedition in the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano region Iceland. The conference will start with 3-4 days of hiking in the volcanic landscape of Iceland, leading up to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. Along the way, participants will get to see and experience breathtaking views over a harsh landscape and understand the challenges involved in networking in this region. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such an harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. Upon reaching the end of the hike, there will be two days of paper presentations and demos. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Submission Guidelines ------------------------------- Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. The aim of the conference is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. We also hope to have a demo session where participants can show their implementations and systems. If you want to show a demo, please submit a 2 page demo proposal using the same submission system as for conference papers. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Almost any kind of these devices will be allowed to seamlessly integrate into a large-scale Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication environment. In contrast to human-to-human and human-to-machine communication (which mainly involves multimedia sessions, web browsing, and remote control), M2M provides the opportunity of deploying completely new services. In M2M, smart devices are connected through the networks to novel service platforms in a self-controlled system; however, the current communication networks still being designed to support human-to-human communication, focus on the optimization of the communication between devices under direct human control. Recognizing the need for reliable network infrastructures, various standards developing organizations have recently promoted several standardization activities in the M2M domain, which need continuous research input. Open M2M platforms are being developed to implement middleware aiming to provide services for heterogeneous requirements, thus avoiding vendor-locking stove-pipe solutions, acting as a horizontal convergence layer supporting multiple vertical application domains such as transport and logistics, utilities, automotive, eHealth, etc. which may be deployed independently or as part of a common platform. M2MCIP provides a platform for researchers and practitioners to address and discuss challenges and proposed solutions to the open and upcoming issues in M2M, as state-of-the-art solutions and work in progress. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanis! ms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It acts as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. This concept includes the well-known ideas of self-configuration, self-management, self-healing, but it pushes these features even farther until including the concept of node mutation and evolution. The "stemness" term recalls the peculiarity of a biological stem cell, able to evolve and specialize towards a specialized cell. The main difference with the biological counterpart and the our concept of stemness lies on the reversibility of the process. Each node is able to opportunistically configure its-self based on the specific task that needs to be accomplished. Strictly related to the stemness concept is not only selfness property of the system that come out in a straightforward way but also swarm concept. In fact, devices evolve and organize to each other by accomplishing simple sub-task, each of one is part of a bigger task. -------------------------------------------------------------- Elsevier Visual Communication and Image Representation Journal Special Issue on QoE in 2D/3D Video Systems -------------------------------------------------------------- Statement of purpose of this special issue It is now widely acknowledged that the adoption of new multi-modal media necessitates mechanisms in order to assess and evaluate perceived multimedia quality. The problem of understanding and enhancing Quality of Experience (QoE) in complex, distributed and diverse environments has been and is continuing to be the subject of intense research investigation. Considerable efforts have been devoted to assessing QoE via objective or subjective means for new and emerging multimedia services (e.g. immersive multimedia, multimodal applications) over modern fixed/mobile devices (e.g. IPTV/HDTV/UHD/3DTV, video call, 3D smartphone, etc). However, controlling the QoE of these applications is difficult not only because of their high data rate. The combination of multiple media in a single application (multimodality) and the need to keep multiple media in synch across multiple parties means that the problem of capturing and controlling QoE becomes multi-dimensional and cannot be addressed through existing methods. Open questions that will be addressed include for instance: - How can we equalize the QoE perceived by different users in multimodal, immersive and multiparty applications? - How will it be possible to engineer a closed-loop, QoE management framework where the QoS-to-QoE mapping models are sufficiently accurate and stable? - How should data, media, network, control and application planes be orchestrated to maximize QoE / minimize resource consumption? - How can 2D (SVC, HEVC etc) and 3D Coding (MVC, MPEG Part C, etc) affect QoE? WLNs present many unique and dynamic challenges, yet their utilization is on a rapid rise. As a technology, the combination of relatively low costs and ease of deploy-ment has led many communities to rely on local wireless infrastructures. Those encompass-ing the Internet of Things (IoT), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) networks, Clouds of Sensing (CoS), and Software Defined Networks (SDNs), which form a significant evolution towards Next Generation Networks (NGNs) in its global scope. However, the rapid pace of their deployment and utilization have rarely adequately addressed up front caveats; includ-ing planning and ongoing support requirements. This can manifest in degraded levels of service and significant sustainability exposures, dramatically increasing failure rates of user adoption and seamless usage. In its 13th year, the WLN workshop will focus on how such wireless networks can be resilient, while maintaining the promised high levels of service quality in NGNs. We consider design and implementation dimensions in WLNs that will ena-ble change phase towards NGNs and demonstrate added utility in providing sustainable global communication networks. WLN this year will feature multiple special sessions with the following list of non-exclusive topics of interest: 1 . RFID networks in the IoT.  Planning of RFID networks.  RFID scalable anti-collision protocols.  Localization of RFID-tagged objects.  2. Software Defined Networks (SDN) in Dynamically Changing Environments.  Integration and coexistence issues towards NGNs.  New paradigms like Information Centric Networks (ICN) and their relation with SDN.  Practical experiments on SDN based testbeds. 3. QoS constrained Clouds of sensors over WLNs: Do they scale?  Wireless multihop networks, including mesh, ad hoc and sensor networks.  Locally distributed sensor networks towards a global CoS.  Protocol design, including cross-layer and opportunistic approaches. 4. Resource management in M2M communications.  Resource management functionalities (CAC, reservation, scheduling, etc.)  Cognitive radios and dynamic spectrum assignments.  Performance evaluation, including analytical and simulation approaches. Through conventional approaches, such as self-reports and controlled laboratory studies, considerable progress has been made. However, these methods have fundamental limitations in their ability to unobtrusively collect fine-grain behavioral data in natural settings.Recent advances in mobile sensing technology are promising to overcome these obstacles by delivering radically different tools for in-situ human behavior monitoring able to operate at much larger scales than previously thought possible. Today, mobile sensing platforms – primarily, mobile phones – are causing behavioral and social scientists to completely rethink how they study people in real-world environments. A variety of factors have combined to put mobile phones in this position. First, mobile phones are ubiquitous: there are billions of mobile phone users and the market continues to grow worldwide. Second, mobile phones are unobtrusive: due to their ubiquity, users are not consciously aware of the presence of mobile phones, unlike purpose-built devices that depend on user self-reports. Third, mobile phones are powerful and sensor rich platforms: today’s phones have many embedded sensors (e.g., accelerometer, Bluetooth, GPS, and magnetometer) that can accurately capture user behavior; they are also equipped with powerful processors, which allow applications to exploit computationally intensive algorithms to run locally on the phones. Finally, due to their proliferation, mobile phones systems can scale: experiments based on mobile applications can potentially reach millions of people. Before we can fully leverage the potential of mobile phone sensing systems, a variety of open problems must be addressed. For example, because mobile phones are energy constrained, efficient algorithms able to make accurate behavioral inferences from sensor data (with cloud resources exploited when needed) must be developed. Similarly, fundamental challenges remain in the management of personal data and the understanding of real-time processing of sensor workloads. If these technical challenges can be overcome mobile systems will represent a key building block for the emerging discipline of computational social science. The goal of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers either active, or interested, in mobile systems for social analysis and applications. We anticipate a lively forum to discuss recent advances in the design, implementation and evaluation of this new class of mobile systems. The workshop will be open to contributions from researchers from various domains who tackle these challenging research problems using their own unique perspective. The aim is to discuss the many open issues in this area towards identifying novel solutions to be investigated – in addition to fostering collaborations among the workshop participants. We will especially welcome highly innovative and/or controversial contributions, debunking or confirming existing system design methodology, for example by means of new experimental results. A major challenge in the design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic topology and disruption-tolerant architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on performance in terms of sensing coverage, network connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and lack of predictability. The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption, reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. Finally, it should account for ways to specify mission goals and requirements. ACM MiSeNet 2013 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2013 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. It will provide opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. Recently, using analysis of signal distortions in a typical radio network to derive contexts such as location, type or activity of an object not outfitted with a radio receives a growing amount of attention from researchers. The possibility to acquire context information without instrumenting users and without the drawbacks of e.g. optical systems has great potential for typical applications of Ubiquitous Computing. Radio signals are inherently noisy and signal changes depend on a variety of environmental and sensor-specific factors. It is therefore the goal of CosDEO 4th to provide a publication and discussion platform for this growing community in which fundamental problems but also sophisticated approaches can be presented. Thus, we like to encourage scientists in all stages of their research, from first experiments to readily developed and evaluated systems, to submit their original work to allow a broad discussion with established field experts but also researchers relatively new to the field. Even if work is in a very early stage all submitted work must conform to typical scientific standards; providing a good overview of the field and the specific area of the context of interest. If the paper is based on a technical system the system should be described and discussed thoroughly. Besides regular papers, we also encourage submission of visionary papers which must not describe completed research but contain ideas new to the field. Such combined sensing opens up the possibilities for exciting new applications in a variety of urban spaces, both outdoors (e.g., crowd coordination in theme parks, public safety monitoring in major public events, public health management) and indoors (e.g., healthcare, intelligent retail in shopping malls & energy-efficient building operations). Driven by these trends, this workshop seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners working on urban and crowd-driven sensing. We invite original research work focusing on large or innovative crowdsensing architectures, systems and platforms and their experiences on developing crowdsensing applications impacting urban lifestyles in a variety of areas. This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners in all security related to modern and next generation automotive systems. CyCAR workshop will be colacted with ACM CCS 2013. This workshop offers an opportunity to trigger the transfer of the accumulated knowledge by the ACM CCS community to the car industry while taking into account typical automotive constraints such as interoperability, reliability, dependability, quality, resource constraints or complex supply chain. Not only this is the first time that CCS is organized in Germany (country well known for his cars), this is also the first academic conference workshop only focusing on security and dependability for cyber vehicles. The emergence of the Semantic Web, the Internet-of-Things, Ambient Intelligence, and cyber-physical societies make it impossible to capture the intricacies of the future highly dynamic and turbulent networks of interrelated computer-based and hybrid components. As such, it is important that systems are designed to self-adapt to changes without diverging from their intended functions as prescribed in their specifications. The mission of the International Journal of Adaptive, Resilient and Autonomic Systems (IJARAS) is to offer awareness and visibility to novel techniques and methods to achieve self-adaptability and self-resilience when systems and organizations are deployed in environments where change is the rule rather than the exception. Yellin (IBM Israel Software Lab, Jerusalem, Israel) and Jorge Buenabad-Chávez (Departmento de Computación, Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Mexico City, Mexico) In the context of adaptive query processing (AQP), several techniques have been proposed for dynamically adapting/redistributing processor load assignments throughout a computation to take account of varying resource capabilities. The effectiveness of these techniques depends heavily on when and to what they adapt processor load assignments, particularly in the presence of varying load imbalance. Most existing approaches to this problem use heuristics based only upon the current machine load levels. The authors provide an algorithm, prAdapt that probabilistically predicts the future load on processors, based upon the recent history. It uses this prediction to evaluate the expected performance of different alternative solutions, taking into account the cost of the adaptation itself. If it finds a better solution than the current load distribution policy, it adapts to that distribution. Using a simulation based evaluation; they compare prAdapt to other approaches for AQP reported in the literature. While on the one hand the use of these technologies responds to the duty of any public institution to involve the largest number of addressees, on the other hand, society must also consider the limitations of these technologies. Firstly not everybody is so familiar in their use. Moreover, the digital administration thus becomes virtual, accessible only through technological devices and not present in a physical location, and is therefore essential to ensure full coverage of the territory, which is currently not always possible. The main novelty of this paper is the implementation of an automated system capable of adapting different types of government services to multiple communication media. Indeed, this paper is focused on the consideration of both cognitive and autonomic networking approaches when deploying an emergency management system. Strictly related to the ?stemness? concept is not only selfness property of the system that come out in a straightforward way but also swarm concept. December 3rd - 5th 2013 http://www.ami-13.org/ Workshops are an opportunity to meet in the context of the conference and discuss a common theme and/or common topics of interest. In particular, emerging and future areas in AmI are particularly suitable to the workshop format. The workshop should have the potential to move the field forward and suggest promising directions. Workshops could be either half-day (3 hours per day) or full day (6 hours per day). Prospective workshop organizers are invited to submit a proposal for consideration. If the workshop is accepted, it will be publicized on the conference web site and potential participants invited to submit a paper. Criteria, reviewing and acceptance is handled by the workshop organizers. Workshops are only open to people accepted by the workshop organizers and registered for the conference; however a minimum number of attendees for the workshop will be defined by the conference. The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments. Included are also new forms of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of Things, RFIDs, and robots. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (12 pages, Springer format, 9 or 10 point font size) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit, and relevance. A major challenge in the design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic topology and disruption-tolerant architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on performance in terms of sensing coverage, network connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and lack of predictability. The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption, reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. Finally, it should account for ways to specify mission goals and requirements. ACM MiSeNet 2013 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2013 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. It will provide opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. As computer networks are becoming more complex and diverse in terms of architecture, services, and devices, the importance of measurement increases. In addition, fully understanding the impact of new services and applications on existing traditional networks is needed for planning and provisioning purposes. Inferring user experience from network measurements has been a long-standing challenge, which remains with cloud and mobile services growing. With rapid evolution of networking technologies and architectures, the measurement community can offer invaluable insights and improve understanding where lacking, especially in cases where validation of existing results is needed. Networked games have grown in popularity over the past decade, catalyzed by the spread of mobile and residential Internet connections with high capacities and low latencies that encourage game developers to incorporate networked features into their products. Although networked games have demonstrated commercial, artistic, and technical successes, challenges and opportunities remain as computer technologies continue to grow. Powerful, inexpensive PCs and game consoles provide the potential for immersive, multiplayer game play, but must still overcome the geographic dispersion of gamers to be fun. Cloud computing promises new models for game computation, with the added challenge of delivering interactive game content to players. Cheap, always-connected smartphones and tablets provide a new frontier for game development, but with the connectivity and security challenges that come with mobile, wireless networks. Underneath all this is the challenge of connecting clients and servers over shared and unpredictably congested IP networks. This special issue aims to bring together new research results from a variety of backgrounds that address these core challenges. Topics of interest include networked game-related work in: - scalability, cloud support, and game system architectures; - performance evaluation and optimization; - effective visualization on Internet infrastructures; - efficient message distribution and network protocol design; - latency issues and lag compensation techniques; - operating system enhancements, service platforms, and middleware; - multiplayer usability, quality of experience, and user behavior studies; - mobile games; - security and cheat detection and prevention; and - social networking in multiplayer games. Editors' note: We encourage submissions from both academic and industrial practitioners, especially as they pertain to open source tools or products, but content must have technical merit, not be an advertisement. Submission Guidelines All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words, focused on Internet technologies and implementations. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to IC's international readership—primarily practicing engineers and academics who are looking for material that introduces new technology and broadens familiarity with current topics. We do not accept white papers, and we discourage strictly theoretical or mathematical papers.
