Building on the great success of the first edition of the IEEE Workshop on Telecommunications Standards: "From Research to Standards" (which won the Best IEEE ComSoc Workshop Award at IEEE ICC 2012), we are happy to announce the organization of its second edition in Budapest, Hungary, collocated with IEEE ICC 2013 (June 9 - 13, 2013). The goal of this Workshop is to bridge the gap between researchers, scientists, and standards experts in both academia and industry and to promote standardization as an important vehicle for information sharing and cooperation between academia and industry. An additional goal is to bring together experts from different standardization bodies, providing opportunities for closer understanding and collaboration; catalyzing development of more interoperable standards and more efficient and effective communication systems. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. Opportunistic communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g., mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data management and system interoperability. The SI aims at presenting state-of-the-art research and future trends in mobile and heterogeneous opportunistic networking and application paradigms, combining the mobile communication, mobility and resource management field, and scientifically presents the various concepts that contribute to enable high performance computing in these environments. However, VANET?s unique characteristics and special requirements excite new challenges to the research community. Moreover, theoretical advances on wireless network communications, such as cooperative relay networks, network coding, constructive use of interference, and interference alignment, promise to have significant impact on practical wireless networks in the following years. To better understand the nature of these advances, it is important to evaluate these ideas in real-world environments via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and the varying and error-prone wireless channel. As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking research community. We want to bring this new dimension to MobiSys by inviting researchers to show off their creativity through the submission of videos of their research. The video should be presenting a working demo and be no longer than 5 minutes. Selected videos will be invited for short presentations in the final technical program alongside paper presentations with one or two videos per session. The presenter of the video will have 5 minutes between two paper presentations to introduce the idea, play the video, and take a few questions at the end. The video should be illustrating technically sound innovative research on the design, implementation, usage, and evaluation of mobile computing and wireless systems, applications, and services. Videos will be selected according to two main criteria: content (Is the material relevant to the MobiSys community? Is the idea novel?) and presentation (Is the video well done? Does it engage the audience through creative editing?) Accepted videos will be included into the MobiSys 2013 Eproceedings and the ACM DL. They'll be also linked from the MobiSys 2013 website. By 2020, several tens of billions of devices are predicted to be connected. It is envisioned that the physical things/devices will be outfitted with different kinds of sensors and actuators and connected to the Internet via heterogeneous access networks enabled by technologies such as embedded sensing and actuating, radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor networks, real-time and semantic web services, etc. IoT is actually a network of networks with many unique characteristics. With the huge number of things/objects and sensors/actuators connected to the Internet, a massive and in some cases real-time data flow will be automatically produced by connected things and sensors. It is important to collect correct raw data in an efficient way; but more important is to analyze and mine the raw data to abstract more valuable information such as correlations among things and services to provide web of things or Internet of services. However many challenges and problems remain unsolved as of now or not fully addressed due to the unique features of IoT systems. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. The goal of this special issue of IEEE Sensors Journal is to feature latest advances and directions in IoT architecture, protocols and services for typical IoT use cases (such as smart grid, connected cars, smart cities, etc), their performance, impact, demands and implications on future Internet design. The emphasis of this special issue will be on the sensor aspects of IoT. Scope Papers should contain original results or review/tutorial content to be accessible to general audiences working in the field. Wireless mesh networks are expected to be a key element of this future by providing a highly scalable, reliable and cost-effective wireless backbone to mobile devices, through a multi-hop wireless communication system. Although significant advances have taken place in the last few years, open questions and technical challenges still remain, in addition to how wireless mesh networks will integrate with and/or influence existing mobile and fixed broadband networks in order to create an integrated infrastructure that supports emerging services. Especially interesting are recent developments in the area of community mesh networks or carrier grade mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together technologists researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions on recent advances in the analysis, design and implementation of systems, protocols and services for next generation mobile mesh networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at all layers of mesh networks, from application to physical layer. Opportunistic networking represents a key communication paradigm for this vision. Either as a standalone communication mode or as a complement to infrastructure-based communication, opportunistic networking leverages the mobility of end users to enhance their ability to communicate in the absence of reliable end-to-end connectivity. Opportunistic networking opens up many possibilities but also poses countless new challenges. The goal of the AOC 2013 workshop is to serve as a forum for researchers, professionals, application developers, and other experts from both academia and industry to exchange new ideas, discuss new solutions, and share their experiences. As with previous editions, this year’s workshop is particularly interested in novel research directions, such as service composition techniques, co-existence with infrastructure networks, and insights from game theory, social networking analysis, and cognitive psychology. A CR network aims to support highly reconfigurable devices that are capable of sensing the current environment, and adapting the transmission parameters to the specific scenarios, also based on the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the applications. The potential deployment of CR networks has been further augmented through various standardization activities supported by the IEEE (e.g. IEEE 802.22, IEEE 802.16h, IEEE 802.11y), and directives of spectrum regulatory agencies (e.g. the FCC in US). These efforts have opened portions of the spectrum for opportunistic spectrum access and laid down rules for sharing the spectrum, so that communication in novel and promising application domains, like smart-grid and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) domains, as well as communication in critical scenarios, like vehicular networks, public safety networks, emergency networks, are supported. According to the UN State of the World Population 2007 report, sometime in the middle of 2007, the number of people living in cities and towns has overtook the number of people living in the rural areas and this event was recorded in the history as the arrival of the "Urban Millennium" or the 'tipping point'. In regard to future trends, it is estimated 93% of urban growth will occur in developing nations, with 80% of urban growth occurring in Asia and Africa. Urged by these observations, city halls and political decision makers have become very alert, calling for urgent solutions to the growing problems. However, the recent advances in information and communication technologies may stimulate new solutions towards the urbanization problems. This is verified as a target research and innovation area in Horizon 2020 of European Union Policy under the challenge 'Secure Clean and Efficient Energy' with the main goal of jointly Smart Sustainable Cities. The aim is to integrate and validate ICT technologies and services in neighbourhoods to make progress towards intelligent cities by exploiting ubiquitous technologies. In addition to technical developments, attention is given to innovative service business models which include security, safety and privacy issues. Our need to improve our understanding of cities, however, is pressed not only by the social relevance of urban environments, but also by the availability of new strategies for city-scale interventions that are enabled by emerging technologies. Leveraging advances in data analysis, sensor technologies, and urban experiments, City Science will provide new insights into creating a data-driven approach to urban design and planning. To build the cities that the world needs, we need a scientific understanding of cities that considers our built environments and the people who inhabit them. This call addresses all the aforementioned issues by incorporating new technologies in the area of mobile communications, multimedia services, data storage and handling and ubiquitous computing. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on an individual’s hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce resources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable environmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community, there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify development tasks and increase the confidence in the correctness and performance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. SESENA13 aims to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange recent research results on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The former will foster in-depth technical discussions of novel results with an audience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will provide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. To foster discussion, SESENA13 will also host a special “speakers’ corner” session composed of impromptu presentations where attendees (including those without accepted papers) will have the opportunity to present their own views in very short segments (e.g., 2-4 minutes). * Topics of Interest * The workshop focuses on software engineering issues arising in networked (embedded) sensing systems and their possible integration in Internet of Things scenarios. Opportunistic networks are an instance of the delay tolerant paradigm applied to networks made up of users' portable devices (such as smartphones and tablets). As such, they are able to cope with challenged network conditions that are often present in real life, such as high node mobility, variable connectivity, and disconnections, which would impair communications in traditional Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. In this scenario, user mobility becomes one of the main drivers to enable message delivery. In fact, according to the store-carry-and-forward paradigm, user devices store messages and carry them around while they move in the network, exchanging them upon encounter with other nodes, and eventually delivering them to the ir destination or to interested users. This new communication paradigm enables legacy applications in challenged scenarios, as well as it paves the way to innovative solutions. While opportunistic networks initially received attention to support communication where an infrastructure is not available (for disaster recovery or in rural areas), nowadays a number of applications can be envisaged ranging from content sharing, through mobile social networking, to participatory and urban sensing. All these applications rely on data forwarding amongst devices. As a consequence, two aspects become relevant, that is, the need for mechanisms guaranteeing trusted and secure communications while preserving users' privacy (in the absence of infrastructure and sometimes even end-to-end connectivity), and incentive mechanisms able to boost the participation in the network. This Special Issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in Opportunistic Networking. Opportunistic communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g., mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data management and system interoperability. The SI aims at presenting state-of-the-art research and future trends in mobile and heterogeneous opportunistic networking and application paradigms, combining the mobile communication, mobility and resource management field, and scientifically presents the various concepts that contribute to enable high performance computing in these environments. Doctoral students working in areas related to wireless, mobile and multimedia networking are solicited to submit an extended abstract comprising a summary of their research findings, work in progress and planned research. The forum will be a platform for PhD students to interact both with their peers as well as experienced researchers from industry. The forum will be organized as a poster session and will include a '1-minute madness' introduction by each student. Current Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit extended abstracts. The Ph.D. student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others may be acknowledged in the extended abstract. Submissions will be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to attend WoWMoM 2013 and present their poster at the PhD Forum. The exponential growth in deployment of these technologies has made them large-scale energy consumers. They measure, monitor and control energy systems such as the smart grid; inform and shape human demand; aid in the prediction, deployment, storage and control of energy resources; and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers measure, analyze, and collectively control system elements. The fourth International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy), to be held in Berkeley, CA in May 2013, aims to be the premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of computing and communication for smart energy systems (including the smart grid), and in energy-efficient computing and communication systems. By bringing together researchers in a high-quality single-track conference with significant opportunities for individual and small-group interaction, it will serve as a major forum for presentations and discussions that will shape the future of this area. Now, the passengers during travelling can take smart decisions by knowing the outside environment variables such as traffic conditions, density of the vehicles in a particular region, duration of traffic lights in a particular areas, etc. Moreover, these passengers can download and upload the heavy contents while travelling with the aid of the already deployed Road Side Unit (RSUs) which are connected to Internet to provide various services to the end users. Modern Vehicles equipped with sensor nodes monitor and collect the data in sparse and dense regions which can be processed for the benefit of community of peoples, e.g., health monitoring and diagnostic systems, safety alarms, intelligent transport systems, and environment monitoring. The vehicles during movement, equipped with sensor nodes, can also collect the data from human body and that data can be processed in collaboration with the other vehicles for various medical purposes. In this case, VANETs can also be used in Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). However, as a new technology emerges, it throws new challenges to the research community. Although there exist many solutions of different kinds in the relevant areas, there is still a requirement of more efficient solutions which can be used in wide variety of applications. Many industrial and academic institutions have already geared up to provide solutions for the benefits of the community. Moreover, there are many constraints that have to be resolved before providing any standard solution. It is hence crucial to increase network capacity to accommodate these bandwidth consuming applications and services. Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a promising concept to improve user experiences and resource utilization in cellular networks, both for licensed and unlicensed spectrum. It enables two mobile devices in proximity of each other to establish a direct local link and to bypass the base station or access point. D2D communication may either be network-controlled where the operator manages the switching between direct and conventional cellular links, or the direct links may be managed by the devices without operator control. D2D allows combining infrastructure-mode and ad hoc communication. Device-to-device communications may have advantages such as: 1) improved performance for devices; 2) improved spectrum reuse and system throughput; 3) offloading in cellular networks; 4) improved energy efficiency; 5) extended coverage; 6) creation of new services. It also poses new problems and challenges. A issue is how to share resources dynamically (e.g. spectrum and energy) between cellular communication and ad hoc D2D communication to accommodate larger volumes of traffic and to provide better service to users. Other challenges include: identification of services for which D2D communication is useful; radio resource allocation and resource management; self-organizing direct links; proximity-based offloading, and capacity evaluation and performance comparison. The special issue addresses research advances that enable D2D communications in cellular networks. The goal is to report on the most up-to-date contributions in this area. By 2020, several tens of billions of devices are predicted to be connected. It is envisioned that the physical things/devices will be outfitted with different kinds of sensors and actuators and connected to the Internet via heterogeneous access networks enabled by technologies such as embedded sensing and actuating, radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor networks, real-time and semantic web services, etc. IoT is actually a network of networks with many unique characteristics. With the huge number of things/objects and sensors/actuators connected to the Internet, a massive and in some cases real-time data flow will be automatically produced by connected things and sensors. It is important to collect correct raw data in an efficient way; but more important is to analyze and mine the raw data to abstract more valuable information such as correlations among things and services to provide web of things or Internet of services. However many challenges and problems remain unsolved as of now or not fully addressed due to the unique features of IoT systems. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. The goal of this special issue of IEEE Sensors Journal is to feature latest advances and directions in IoT architecture, protocols and services for typical IoT use cases (such as smart grid, connected cars, smart cities, etc), their performance, impact, demands and implications on future Internet design. The emphasis of this special issue will be on the sensor aspects of IoT. Scope Papers should contain original results or review/tutorial content to be accessible to general audiences working in the field.
