Opportunistic networks are an instance of the delay tolerant paradigm applied to networks made up of users' portable devices (such as smartphones and tablets). As such, they are able to cope with challenged network conditions that are often present in real life, such as high node mobility, variable connectivity, and disconnections, which would impair communications in traditional Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. In this scenario, user mobility becomes one of the main drivers to enable message delivery. In fact, according to the store-carry-and-forward paradigm, user devices store messages and carry them around while they move in the network, exchanging them upon encounter with other nodes, and eventually delivering them to the > ir destination or to interested users. This new communication paradigm enables legacy applications in challenged scenarios, as well as it paves the way to innovative solutions. While opportunistic networks initially received attention to support communication where an infrastructure is not available (for disaster recovery or in rural areas), nowadays a number of applications can be envisaged ranging from content sharing, through mobile social networking, to participatory and urban sensing. All these applications rely on data forwarding amongst devices. As a consequence, two aspects become relevant, that is, the need for mechanisms guaranteeing trusted and secure communications while preserving users' privacy (in the absence of infrastructure and sometimes even end-to-end connectivity), and incentive mechanisms able to boost the participation in the network. > > This Special Issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in Opportunistic Networking. CFP: Smart City and Ubiquitous Computing Applications Workshop (co-located with WoWMoM 2013, Madrid 4-7 June 2013) Call for Papers As the world experiences unprecedented urban growth, decision makers have become very alert calling for urgent solutions to the resulting issues and newly identified problems. Fortunately, the recent advances in information and communication technologies may stimulate new solutions towards the urbanization problems. As a result, research and industrial efforts are beginning to focus on work in that direction and towards Smart Sustainable Cities; the aim is to integrate and validate ICT technologies and services in neighborhoods to make progress towards intelligent cities by exploiting ubiquitous technologies. In addition to technical developments, attention is given to innovative service business models which include security, safety and privacy issues. The need to improve our understanding of cities, however, is pressed not only by the social relevance of urban environments, but also by the availability of new strategies for city-scale interventions that are enabled by emerging technologies. This workshop aims to showcase latest advances in Smart City and Ubiquitous Computing applications which are the result of research efforts that incorporate new technologies from the areas of mobile communications, multimedia services, data storage and handling and ubiquitous services. Opportunistic communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g., mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data management and system interoperability. The SI aims at presenting state-of-the-art research and future trends in mobile and heterogeneous opportunistic networking and application paradigms, combining the mobile communication, mobility and resource management field, and scientifically presents the various concepts that contribute to enable high performance computing in these environments. Today, wireless networking capabilities, sophisticated data processing, and new sensors and actuators are increasingly being incorporated into mobile medical devices that promise to improve a clinician’s ability to diagnose and treat a range of acute and chronic medical conditions. This new generation of mobile medical device systems (MDDS) faces a variety of challenges. Such devices are often implanted, ingested, or worn and deployed as a part of pervasive health monitoring system. Some interact directly with a patient’s biological systems in order to provide coordinated, closed-‐loop care. In order for these mobile medical cyber-‐physical systems to be successful, one needs to develop targeted platforms and technologies. This is particularly challenging because of the devices used in MMDS have to be small and unobtrusive. This makes them severely resource constrained in nature. Architectures developed for the desktop and hand-‐held computing world ill suited for such applications. Further, as people who have limited understanding of the underlying technologies will use such devices, the usability of such systems, from user-‐interface to sustainability to interoperability with other devices to configuration, is very important. These challenges have been recognized, in the abstract, in the community for some time. However, there has not been a dedicated forum for discussing ideas on building mobile medical devices. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSANs, WSNs, robot networks, and robotics and automation. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution. The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate"Big brother scenario". Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. Attention Management in Pervasive Computing ------------------------------------------- Submission deadline: 1 March 2013 Notification: 26 April 2013 Publication: Jan.–Mar. 2014 Finely-woven, globe-spanning digital networks, together with the radical miniaturization and embedding of information, communication, and sensor electronics into almost everything, have made human-to-computer bonds truely ubiquitous and pervasive. Accordingly, our approach to human-computer interaction is reversing: while HCI previously addressed issues related to how humans initiate interaction with ICT systems, we now increasingly observe ICT system designs that also approach humans. Within this "human computer confluence", human attention—more than processor speed, communication bandwidth, and storage resources—becomes the single most critical (yet least understood) resource in pervasive system design today. While previously considered a mental variable that could not be quantified and measured, attention now constitutes a fundamental element of psychological research. Today, everyone has an intuitive understanding of what attention is, how it can be assessed, and how it impacts perception, memory, expectation, awareness, relevance, decision-making, and other behaviours. This special issue focusses on novel approaches to attention modelling, attention representation, attention sensing, recognition or estimation, together with attention management as a theoretical and practical principle for designing Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing systems. The last few years have witnessed the development of many innovative solutions for ad-hoc and sensor networks that are maturing to the level of commercialization and standardization. Yet, numerous challenges remain for the implementation of practical solutions that operate robustly, securely, and efficiently. For example, with the support of mobile cloud computing, Body Area Networks (BANs) can be greatly enhanced for the deployment of innovative healthcare monitoring applications with richer multimedia contents, more reliable service quality and more types of convergence services. Moreover, adopting the information-centric and content-centric networking concepts and techniques, BANs are evolving to enable a highly flexible and scalable infrastructure for mobile services assisted by cloud computing. Due to the intrinsically resource-constrained features of typical mobile devices as well as smart sensors, it is essential for the mobile cloud service provider to offer sufficient computational resources and storage capacity support for pervasive services, and also maintain a reliable and capable communication system among the devices. In addition, the dynamic mobile wireless channel environments with limited available bandwidth make it difficult for mobile users to provide consistent and ubiquitous services offered by cloud systems. The objective of this workshop is to arrive at a deeper understanding of how these powerful trends intersect; we refer to the intersection of these two fields as Big Sensor Data. How should the techniques and analytical tools from years of Big Data research impact future directions in Mobile Sensing? Similarly, what role should programmable context-aware mobile sensing systems play within the study of Big Data? This workshop will provide an open forum for researchers and industry practitioners to present and discuss their perspectives on the topic of Big Sensor Data. Specifically, we anticipate lively discussions on: i) new application scenarios; ii) how data analytics and the operation of sensing systems can be more tightly coupled; iii) emerging new roles for people; iii) hybrid sensing and analytics systems that blend both large-scale mobile sensor data and social data (e.g., micro-blogs, social networks), along with a broader set of potential alternative data sources (transaction logs, search queries etc.) We invite the submission of position papers related to Big Sensor Data and its relationship to Mobile Sensing along with technical papers that represent the latest innovations in the field. Moreover, theoretical advances on wireless network communications, such as cooperative relay networks, network coding, constructive use of interference, and interference alignment, promise to have significant impact on practical wireless networks in the following years. To better understand the nature of these advances, it is important to evaluate these ideas in real-world environments via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and the varying and error-prone wireless channel. As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking research community. WiNMee 2013 is the ninth edition in the International Workshop on Wireless Network Measurements series that began in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Experience and measurements from building, designing and/or operating production wireless networks - Measurement and characterization of wireless networks traffic such as WLANs, cellular networks (including smartphone and mobile application traffic characteristics), wireless home networks, and sensor networks - Experimental validation of network simulation and mobility models - Measurement-based network management and troubleshooting - Experiences and challenges with wireless measurements - Methodologies for validating wireless test-bed results and improving the repeatability of tests, simplifying experiment setup and reconfiguration - Methodologies for measuring heterogeneous wireless networks - Techniques and experiences with collecting, archiving, anonymizing and sharing wireless measurement data - Techniques and experimental results on performance measurements of cognitive radio systems - Metrics for wireless network performance evaluation - Prediction and inference of user access, demand and mobility - Software tools for building and/or managing wireless test-beds - Spectrum utilization measurements techniques in spectrum sharing and cognitive radio networks Paper Submission The workshop seeks novel, previously unpublished papers, which are not currently under review by another conference, workshop, or journal. All submissions should be written in English with a maximum paper length of six printed pages (IEEE Transactions style double-column format, 10pt font size) including figures. Only PDF files are acceptable. Papers can be prepared using either LaTeX or Microsoft Word. Do not put page numbers on your document. References should be numbered in alphabetical order by lead author last name. Within the text, citations to references should appear as the appropriate reference number in square brackets. Topics of interest include the following. PAPER SUBMISSION There are TWO possible paper formats (detailed submission instructions will appear at the conference website): 1. REGULAR PAPERS: should not exceed 22 double-spaced pages including figures, tables and references. Additional details may be included in a clearly marked appendix of up to 8 pages, which, however, will be read at the discretion of the TPC. 2. SHORT PAPERS: should not exceed 3 double-column pages including figures, tables and references. SHORT PAPERS can either summarize very recent research results (including work in progress) or discuss results that do not require a full paper submission. A paper submitted as a REGULAR paper which is then rejected will not be considered for acceptance as a SHORT paper. Both the REGULAR and SHORT papers, if accepted, will be presented in the conference and published in the proceedings of the conference: 1. The authors of a REGULAR paper will be given the choice to have their paper published either in a special issue of Performance Evaluation (PEVA) or in a special issue of the ACM Performance Evaluation Review (PER). Please note that authors of REGULAR papers who choose to have their paper published in PEVA must submit their camera ready copy by the earlier deadline (see below). 2. SHORT papers will appear in the special issue of PER. These special issues of PEVA and PER will both appear in time for the conference. However, moving streams of data between the parallel path of the internal router and external serial-channel links between them consumes additional power. One challenge is encoding the data and minimise the switching activity of data in the serial links in order to reduce the additional power dissipation; while under real-time and minimal hardware constraints. Consequently, proposed is a novel low area/power decision circuit for NoC channel encoding which identifies in real-time packets for encoding and extends the existing SILENT encoders/decoders to further minimise power consumption and demonstrates the power performance savings of the decision circuit and modified (en)decoders using example test traffic with the EMBRACE NoC router, a mixed signal spiking neural network (SNNs) embedded platform. Extending the EHW principle to architectural adaptation, the authors study the capability of evolvable hardware classifiers to adapt to intentional run-time fluctuations in the available resources, i.e., chip area, in this work. To that end, the authors leverage the Functional Unit Row (FUR) architecture, a coarse-grained reconfigurable classifier, and apply it to two medical benchmarks, the Pima and Thyroid data sets from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. While quick recovery from architectural changes was already demonstrated for the FUR architecture, the authors also introduce two reconfiguration schemes helping to reduce the magnitude of degradation after architectural reconfiguration. Tyrrell (Department of Electronics, University of York, York, UK) Transport triggered architectures are used for implementing bio-inspired systems due to their simplicity, modularity and fault-tolerance. However, producing efficient, optimised machine code for such architectures is extremely difficult, since computational complexity has moved from the hardware-level to the software-level. Presented is the application of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) to the evolution of machine code for a simple implementation of transport triggered architecture. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by evolving machine code for a 4-bit multiplier with three different levels of parallelism. The results show that 100% successful solutions were found by CGP and by further optimising the size of the solutions, it’s possible to find efficient implementations of the 4-bit multiplier. Further analysis of the solutions showed that use of loops within the CGP function set could be beneficial and was demonstrated by repeating the earlier 4-bit multiplier experiment with the addition of a loop function. Nashed (Department of Information Engineering, University of Parma, Parma, Italy) and Stefano Cagnoni (Department of Information Engineering, University of Parma, Parma, Italy) The authors formulate the body pose estimation as a multi-dimensional nonlinear optimization problem, suitable to be approximately solved by a meta-heuristic, specifically, the particle swarm optimization (PSO). Starting from multi-view video sequences acquired in a studio environment, a full skeletal configuration of the human body is retrieved. They use a generic subdivision-surface body model in 3-D to generate solutions for the optimization problem. PSO then looks for the best match between the silhouettes generated by the projection of the model in a candidate pose and the silhouettes extracted from the original video sequence. The optimization method, in this case PSO, is run in parallel on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and is implemented in Cuda-C™ on the nVidia CUDA™ architecture. The authors compare the results obtained by different configurations of the camera setup, fitness function, and PSO neighborhood topologies. The acquisition of medical information via a set of wireless sensors embedded in the patient himself, the treatment and use of this information either by a local contractor equipment or offset after transfer in 3G and/or WiFi connection to a data server, the access to the collected data, ...etc. are some of the important challenges that we have to consider. Each level represents a fairly complex subsystem with a local hierarchy employed to ensure efficiency, portability, security, and reduced cost. MobileHealth'2013 workshop aims to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas and would be an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective pervasive wireless healthcare systems. The workshop will include presentations of theoretical and experimental achievements, innovative wireless systems, prototyping efforts, case studies and advances in technology related to wireless healthcare networking and systems. This announcement solicits technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal. Networked computing at multiple scales plays a crucial rule in CPSs as such systems use computation and communication deeply embedded in and interacting with physical processes to drive the cyber-physical coupling. Research advances in cyber-physical networking systems promise to transform our world with networked systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness, adaptability, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability, scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. This workshop is a forum to bring together people from academia and industry to explore research issues and challenges related to Cyber-Physical Networking Systems (CPNSs) and discuss innovative ideas and promising cutting-edge solutions (methodologies, techniques and approaches) on diverse CPNS-related topics. This forum aims to help researchers from academia and industry understand the broad, novel scope of CPNSs and grasp new thinking, challenges, and approaches underlying the issues, technologies, and solutions exchanged from mutual communities. Specifically, this workshop will address CPNS methodologies, modeling, theory, protocols, systems, architectures, and implementations and emerging CPNS technologies. The presentations will also feature industry representatives from prestigious R&D labs who will provide diverse views to facilitate collaboration between academia and industry. This advance heralds in a new era for patient monitoring, medical procedures, patient status awareness, outpatient treatment, and a plethora of other areas in modern healthcare. Developments in component miniaturization of electronics and sensing devices, advances in low-power wireless communication, and the arrival of energy harvesting have led to the development of ultra-low power wireless communication and sensing devices that are ideally suited for mobile healthcare applications. These devices can be installed in medical facilities and equipment, or worn directly on a patient's body, allowing for real-time data acquisition, data fusion, reporting, and alerting from a plethora of sources. This allows for an unprecedented level of insight into a patient's health, with a similarly high level of fidelity of the collected data that in many cases is sufficient to allow biometric identification of an individual. With the advent of these new e-Health applications and their associated requirements and constraints, many vital topics of research need to be explored to provide robustness, security, responsiveness, and longevity of the wireless network and patient health information. This special issue focuses on the state-of-the-art in wireless networking for e-Health applications, associated technical and regulatory challenges, as well as exploring deployments and implementations in real-world applications. By 2020, several tens of billions of devices are predicted to be connected. It is envisioned that the physical things/devices will be outfitted with different kinds of sensors and actuators and connected to the Internet via heterogeneous access networks enabled by technologies such as embedded sensing and actuating, radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless sensor networks, real-time and semantic web services, etc. IoT is actually a network of networks with many unique characteristics. With the huge number of things/objects and sensors/actuators connected to the Internet, a massive and in some cases real-time data flow will be automatically produced by connected things and sensors. It is important to collect correct raw data in an efficient way; but more important is to analyze and mine the raw data to abstract more valuable information such as correlations among things and services to provide web of things or Internet of services. However many challenges and problems remain unsolved as of now or not fully addressed due to the unique features of IoT systems. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. The goal of this special issue of IEEE Sensors Journal is to feature latest advances and directions in IoT architecture, protocols and services for typical IoT use cases (such as smart grid, connected cars, smart cities, etc), their performance, impact, demands and implications on future Internet design. The emphasis of this special issue will be on the sensor aspects of IoT. At the moment, two of the most important challenges are: i) the definition of architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (Future) Internet; and ii) the creation of value-added services, esp. open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory, application and implementation of the Internet of Things concept: technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services. This emerging field of technology aims to improve safety of passengers and traffic flow, reduces pollution to the environment and enables in-vehicle entertainment applications. The safety-related applications could reduce accidents by providing drivers with traffic information such as collision avoidance, traffic flow alarms and road surface conditions. Moreover, the passengers could exploit an available infrastructure in order to connect to the internet for infomobility and entertainment applications. The increasing necessity of this network is an impetus for leading car manufacturers, research communities and governments to increase their efforts toward creating a standardized platform for vehicular communications. However, VANET’s unique characteristics and special requirements excite new challenges to the research community. To address these challenges in both safety- and comfort-oriented applications, there is a pressing need to develop new protocols and algorithms for channel characterization and modeling, Medium Access Control (MAC), obstacle modeling, adaptive geographical routing to sparse and dense traffic conditions. This special issue aims to theme innovative research achievements in the field of vehicular networks and communications. We are seeking original and unpublished papers. Many applications that could only have been dreamed of, have now become a reality due to the high computing resources, display and networking capabilities of smartphones. With applications ranging from productivity, entertainment, enterprise, social networking, communications and mixed reality, the smartphone is the "swiss army knife" of it all. However, there are still many untapped elements and unlimited possibilities that smartphones can provide that have not been explored much in detail. In this workshop, we will explore how smartphones can help enable cyber-physical computing, that bridges the gap between the physical and the virtual world and also enable social computing by creating mobile social networks, social networks that are built around the interactions of mobile phones. The PhoneCom 2013 workshop is an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present innovative ideas and results on all aspects of smartphone computing, including theoretical foundations, techniques and methods, tools and platforms, prototypes, evaluation, practical implementations and applications. The workshop aims to attract and bring together mobile computing, cyber-physical computing, ubiquitous computing, social computing, wireless networking and communications researchers along with user interface designers and practitioners with diverse backgrounds. The workshop will be a full day workshop. Besides research paper presentations, the workshop will feature an Invited Talk (keynote) and a Panel Discussion session. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2013 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green solutions for the processing of real-world Big Data knowledge base and streams over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade-offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. After the long Christmas and New Year break and upon requests from many potential authors, the submission deadline of the "IEEE Workshop on Telecom Standards: From Research to Standards" has been extended to 25 January 2013 (FIRM). It has been also decided that extended versions of selected best papers will be recommended for publication in Special Issues of IEEE Magazines. The organization of the second edition of the workshop is decided based on the great success of the first edition (which won the Best IEEE ComSoc Workshop Award at IEEE ICC 2012). They have been employed in emerging areas with high potential for societal impact, and are being used in plethora of biomedical, environmental and industrial applications. The processes of data gathering, analysis and information fusion need to employ efficient cooperation and coordination among tasks at different layers and abstractions – while having the constraint of energy-consumption on mind and, consequently, prolonging the effective network lifetime and its topology control. A specific aspect of collaboration in WSN is the one with mobile systems. In many environmental application scenarios, typically there are much fewer mobile than static nodes, but the mobile nodes have much higher energy reserves, as well as communication range. Consequently, they can improve the sensing coverage and reliability of transmission – but they do introduce an extra burden: the management of the mobile units. In other application scenarios – e.g., structural health-monitoring and traffic management – the ratio of mobile units to static (e.g., on bridges or along road-side) in a certain area is much higher. However, in such settings, the mobile entities that have a collaborative role change much more frequently with time. Mobile and wireless systems offer a wide range of applications and services that are conducive to collaboration, and vice versa. The International Workshop on Collaborative Mobile Systems and Sensors Networks (CMSSN 2013) aims at providing an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to present their contributions addressing various challenges in efficient management of the collaborative aspects in wireless and mobile sensors networks and systems. Vehicular communication and networking also present a very active field of standardization activities worldwide, like IEEE (802.11p and 1609.x) and SAE DSRC in the US, ISO TC204, ETSI TC ITS and CEN WG278 in Europe and ARIB T-75 in Japan, as well as field trials like the Safety Pilot Model Deployment in the US, simTD in Germany and SCORE@F in France. The Tenth ACM International Workshop on VehiculAr Inter-NETworking, Systems, and Applications (ACM VANET 2013) will cover all vehicular wireless networking aspects using a variety of wireless communication techniques (from short-range DSRC/WiFi to long-range cellular communication). Opportunistic networks are an instance of the delay tolerant paradigm applied to networks made up of users' portable devices (such as smartphones and tablets). As such, they are able to cope with challenged network conditions that are often present in real life, such as high node mobility, variable connectivity, and disconnections, which would impair communications in traditional Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. In this scenario, user mobility becomes one of the main drivers to enable message delivery. In fact, according to the store-carry-and-forward paradigm, user devices store messages and carry them around while they move in the network, exchanging them upon encounter with other nodes, and eventually delivering them to the ir destination or to interested users. This new communication paradigm enables legacy applications in challenged scenarios, as well as it paves the way to innovative solutions. While opportunistic networks initially received attention to support communication where an infrastructure is not available (for disaster recovery or in rural areas), nowadays a number of applications can be envisaged ranging from content sharing, through mobile social networking, to participatory and urban sensing. All these applications rely on data forwarding amongst devices. As a consequence, two aspects become relevant, that is, the need for mechanisms guaranteeing trusted and secure communications while preserving users' privacy (in the absence of infrastructure and sometimes even end-to-end connectivity), and incentive mechanisms able to boost the participation in the network. This Special Issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in Opportunistic Networking. Reducing the energy consumption of such devices will not only improve the carbon footprint of contemporary mobile IT usage, but will also extend the device lifetime, improve user acceptance and reduce operational costs. Next to to serious and ongoing efforts in hardware design and on operating system level, software engineering techniques will also contribute to optimize energy consumption by improving software design and software quality. The EASED@BIUS workshop, which follows up the Workshop on Developing Energy Aware Software Systems (EEbS 2012) (http://www.uni-weimar.de/cms/medien/mobile-media/eebs-2012.html), held at the annual GI Conference in September 2012, provides a broad forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss ongoing work, latest results and common topics of interest regarding the improvement of software induced energy consumption. Intensive discussions at the first workshop identified a major challenge in optimizing energy efficiency, which is to precisely measure energy consumption of software, regarding user behavior. Thus, the follow workshop EASED@BUIS will focus on the following topics: - approaches and techniques to estimate or measure the energy consumption of software components, - approaches to define standardized application scenarios on mobile devices to provide repeatable measurement of energy consumption in concrete application settings, - approaches to model the energy consumption of software components, and - experiences on measuring and improving the energy consumption of software components. Well elaborated and standardized measurement means will provide an important foundation to detecting sources of wasting energy caused by software systems and will enable validation means to verify energy savings by software improvements. EASED@BUIS will be organized as a one day discussion-intensive workshop to provoke intensive collaborations among the participants. It is intended to initiate collaborative works on standardizing (static and dynamic) measuring techniques for energy consumption. To further stimulate these discussions, authors are invited to submit position papers on the workshop´s topics.
