ACM HotMobile 2013 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. Presentation at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas that are a year or more from submission as a full conference paper to the ACM MobiSys conference or other high-quality conferences. Submitting a full-length paper on the same topic to MobiSys in less than a year is unlikely to involve a sufficient increment of work and maturity of ideas. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to the author(s) unread. As customary with the scientific peer review process, submissions will be handled as confidential material during the review. It is clear that vehicular communication and networking will be the cornerstones of the future cyber-physical system which will significantly change our daily lives. The great potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs on vehicular communication systems worldwide, such as European eSafety framework, various US V2V/V2I projects, and the Japanese Smartway and Advanced Safety Vehicle programs. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together the main researchers working on different aspects of sensor networking for supporting pervasive computing environments. This is a very challenging task, as it involves several technological issues (sensor architectures, efficient networking protocol design, power management, security and dependability, etc.), as well as the socio-economic aspects related to the introduction of such novel paradigms and their benefits for the community. The objective of the workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from the industry and academia. Papers describing original research on both theoretical and practical aspects of sensor networks for pervasive computing are solicited. We particularly welcome submissions that present implementation and deployment results. Particular topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Sensor-based systems and applications - Operating systems for Sensor Networks - Middleware and software tools - Networking architectures and protocols - Data gathering, aggregation and dissemination - Topology control - Power Management and energy-efficient design - Time synchronization - Location management - Sensor networks with mobile elements - Cross-layer architectures - Intelligent sensor nodes - Security and dependability issues - Modeling and performance evaluation - Measurements PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and not be previously published, or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Papers must be submitted in PDF format. Maximum length: 6 pages. The Communication Software Award honors the best practice-oriented application, tool, framework, or demonstration showing innovative and original research in the areas of networks, communication, or distributed systems. Submissions of novel, original work from both academia and industry are invited, nominations of students, from academic research projects, or SME are especially encouraged. Products commercially available during the NetSys 2013 conference already, are excluded from the awards. Nominations of either single applicants or groups are welcome, the best student application may get an additional award. The submission should include an extended abstract of up to two pages. They should include authorship (with affiliations), the problem domain and application of the communication software nominated, platform requirements, and the envisioned licensing scheme, and they should explicitly state what will be demonstrated at the NetSys 2013 conference and how the audience will be able to interact and experiment with it. In this world, every entity (be it a machine, a daily object, a person, or anything) can have a globally locatable, addressable, and readable virtual counterpart, which can collaborate with each other in the provisioning of various services. This concept is slowly becoming a reality: specific standards are being developed, new research results are being obtained, and novel services are being provided by both newborn start-ups and experienced companies in various areas (e.g., SCADA systems, smart grids, smart cities). However, several significant obstacles hinder the full implementation of this concept, and among them are the security issues. In fact, as there is already a parallel economy exploiting the foundational weaknesses of the Internet, this new environment will surely be targeted by original and ingenious malicious models. The challenge here is to prevent the growth of such models or at least to mitigate and limit their impact. Therefore, it is necessary to provide strong foundations to those paradigms that require it (such as IoT), and develop various robust and resilient security mechanisms that allow the secure interaction between entities even in restrictive contexts. Precisely, the goal of this special issue is to publish cutting-edge research results and innovation case studies that will help to set the security foundations of this new interconnected world. Topics of Interest ------------------ In terms of security challenges, topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Novel security problems and challenges. * Privacy risks and data management problems. * Identifying, authenticating, and authorizing entities. * Development of trust frameworks for secure collaboration. * Cryptographic primitives and algorithms for constrained devices. * Secure connection of heterogeneous ecosystems and technologies. * Legal challenges and governance issues. * Fault tolerance and resilience to external and internal attacks. * Context-Aware security. * Security of cloud-based M2M/IoT platforms. * Distributed policy enforcement and rights management. * Usability of security and privacy technologies. * Security in social interactions between virtual entities. Submission ---------- Papers must represent high-quality and previously unpublished works. Original research papers are solicited in all relevant areas (IoT, M2M, etc) on the topic of security for the completely interconnected world. All submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three experts working in the areas. The guidelines for prospective authors can be found at http://www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/security. Prospective authors should submit their papers online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/scn. The objective of ICCPS 2013, the 4th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, is to serve as a single-track forum for reporting advances in all aspects of cyber-physical systems, including but not limited to theory, tools, applications, systems, and testbeds. Submissions must be a maximum of 10 pages, in 2-column format, and use font sizes of no less than 10 pt. Quality of the paper is the primary consideration, and is not synonymous with length. To provide more accurate results to users, most of such systems offer personalization features. To do this, each system models a user in order to adapt search results that will be displayed. In a multi-application context (e.g., when using several search engines for a unique query), personalization techniques can be considered as limited because the user model (also called profile) is incomplete since it does not exploit actions/queries coming from other search engines. So, sharing user models between several search engines is a challenge in order to provide more efficient personalization techniques. A semantic architecture for user profile interoperability is proposed to reach this goal. This architecture is also important because it can be used in many other contexts to share various resources models, for instance a document model, between applications. It is also ensuring the possibility for every system to keep its own representation of each resource while providing a solution to easily share it. The use of the service paradigm usually guarantees a high level of flexibility. In fact, applications can be easily reconfigured in order to continuously offer functionalities also in dynamic execution environments. This happens by changing the service selection and their composition. This flexibility can be exploited to design adaptable SBAs able to react to events that could happen during the application lifecycle. The execution flow of adaptable SBAs automatically changes on the basis of the context in which they are executing. The context includes information ranging from the situation in which users access the service-based applications to the status of the components involved in the execution of such applications. In this paper the authors propose a way to use context information to adapt SBAs. This paradigm defers the selection of the next hop after the packet reception to take advantage of any opportunity provided by broadcast transmissions. Most of the existing opportunistic approaches base the forwarder selection on end-to-end principles. However, in multi-hop wireless environments the cost of a path is not uniformly distributed over space, nor constant over time, hence even two equal-cost paths might present significantly different link quality distributions one from the other. This encourages the use of localized context to implement a more accurate selection of the possible forwarders after each packet transmission. Hence, in this paper the authors propose RELADO, an adaptive opportunistic routing protocol able to efficiently combine end-to-end with local information to ensure transmission resilience across the network. With this flexibility, RELADO is able to reduce packet loss by ensuring the best trade-off between throughput maximization and packet progress. An extensive set of ns2 simulations confirms the potentiality of RELADO to improve network performance when compared to both legacy unicast and opportunistic routing protocols. Proper monitoring interface is an essential prerequisite to adaptive system reconfiguration in parallel on-chip computing. This work proposes a DMC (dual monitoring communication) architecture to support self-awareness on the NoC platform. One type of monitoring communication is integrated with data channel, in order to trace the run-time profile of data communication in high-speed on-chip networking. The other type is separate from the data communication, and is needed to report the run-time profile to the supervising monitor. Direct latency monitoring on mesochronous NoC is presented as a case study and is directly traced in the integrated communication with a novel latency monitoring table in each router. The latency information is reported by the separate monitoring communication to the supervising monitor, which reconfigures the system to adjust the latency, for instance by dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. With quantitative evaluation using synthetic traces and real applications, the effectiveness and efficiency of direct latency monitoring with DMC architecture is demonstrated. The area overhead of DMC architecture is estimated to be small in 65nm CMOS technology. Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact, promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure, where interaction and communication occur opportunistically. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking - pervasive social networking PUBLICATION AND INDEXING Papers are published in the combined proceedings of the IEEE PerCom Workshops and will appear on IEEExplore. According to Google’s metrics, such proceedings are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index, respectively equal to 19 and 33. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of pervasive computing. In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a “destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed by Scopus). PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and should not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the paper. Special Issue on Research Advances and Standardization Activities in WLANs Computer Communications http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computer-communications/call-for-papers/re… Scope A new generation of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is going to make its appearance in the upcoming years, with the IEEE 802.11aa (Robust Audio Video Transport Streaming), IEEE 802.11ac (Very-high throughput < 6GHz), IEEE 802.11af (TV White Spaces) and IEEE 802.11ad (Very-high throughput ~60 GHz), as examples of the most expected ones. Nevertheless, all next-generation standards will consider some of the most significant advances on the wireless communication and networking area in the last decade, developed by a highly active community, in both academia and industry. This special issue requests papers that advance the state-of-the-art of the recent and on-going IEEE 802.11 standards (i.e., IEEE 802.11p, IEEE 802.11s, IEEE 802.11aa, IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ad, IEEE 802.11ae, IEEE 802.11ah, IEEE 802.11af, IEEE 802.11ai, etc.), as well as present mechanisms and solutions, from MAC or above layers, that could be readily transferred to the not-yet finished standards or their future amendments. Please, note that pure PHY-layer papers are outside the scope of this Special Issue, although cross-layer approaches are welcome. In addition, there is special interest in those papers that provide new theoretical and/or experimental insights on the performance of the new and on-going IEEE 802.11 standards in real application scenarios, as well as propose optimal parameter configurations to make them work as much efficiently as possible. Papers proposing, evaluating and comparing disruptive approaches to the path followed by the IEEE 802.11 standards are also very much appreciated. This global aging problem demands an increased focus on preparing pervasive healthcare systems and applications deployed around users and capable of remotely caring for them and improving their health and well-being anywhere anytime. These systems and applications require a sophisticated integration of microcircuit, medical sensing, and wireless and mobile technologies. They largely benefit users by decreasing the dependability on special caregivers and eventually reducing healthcare expenses through a more efficient use of healthcare resources and an earlier detection of life-threatening emergency situations. However, the realization of pervasive healthcare sets some additional critical requirements, e.g. realtimeness and fault-tolerance, and reliability, security and efficiency challenges compared with traditional hospital-based systems. Exploitation of Information and Communications Technologies as well as Networking and Sensors Technologies will enable cost-effective and efficient healthcare delivery, capable to deal with physical and logical mobility of patients and devices. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVEC) will cover all wireless vehicular communication aspects of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), vehicle-to-person (V2P) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the past successful WiVEC editions in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 the fifth IEEE WiVEC symposium will be co-located with the 77th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2013 Spring, and will take place in Dresden on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2013. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVEC and VTC events. All accepted papers (full length and demo papers) will be included in the VTC 2013-Spring conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. Note: VTC Fall editions are traditionally located in North America, while VTC Spring is located in other areas of the world. Since WiVEC was originally launched co-located with VTC Fall editions, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society decided that WiVEC would take place every year and a half in order to ensure that the conference is alternatively co-located with VTC Fall and Spring editions. Motivation and objectives Intelligent rescue systems including ITC and robotics technology have been proposed to mitigate disasters, especially in Japan after the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Reports on urban emergency relief point out that the most serious difficulty is the delay of communication of reliable information between the authorities in charge, especially district authorities, which are supposed to coordinate efforts in real-time and make requests for support at the city level. In order to do that, the infrastructure of information systems during disasters plays an important role. Future rescue information systems may involve a complex mixture of humans performing high level decision-making, intelligent agents coordinating the response, sensors networks providing real-time observations and robots undertaking physical tasks in large-scale environments with the possibility of taking part in the process of data collection. However, the considered environments are prone to uncertainty, ambiguity and incompleteness given their dynamic and evolving nature. The aims of the workshop are: - To present both state-of-the-art results and work in progress in the area of distributed sensing in the context of robotic and sensor networks integration, - To foster multi-disciplinary collaborations between researchers working on different topics: WSN (Wireless Sensors Network), robotic, disaster management, etc ... thus forming a base for future collaboration. This workshop will focus on the tight integration of sensors-robots and information systems during the rescue process. During this era, there has been a tremendous growth in this field with many new techniques and standards have been developed for the ease and safety of the passengers. Now, the passengers during travelling can take smart decisions by knowing the outside environment variables such as traffic conditions, density of the vehicles in a particular region, duration of traffic lights in a particular areas, etc. Moreover, these passengers can download and upload the heavy contents while travelling with the aid of the already deployed Road Side Unit (RSUs) which are connected to Internet to provide various services to the end users. Modern Vehicles equipped with sensor nodes monitor and collect the data in sparse and dense regions which can be processed for the benefit of community of peoples, e.g., health monitoring and diagnostic systems, safety alarms, intelligent transport systems, and environment monitoring. The vehicles during movement, equipped with sensor nodes, can also collect the data from human body and that data can be processed in collaboration with the other vehicles for various medical purposes. In this case, VANETs can also be used in Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). However, as a new technology emerges, it throws new challenges to the research community. Although there exist many solutions of different kinds in the relevant areas, there is still a requirement of more efficient solutions which can be used in wide variety of applications. Many industrial and academic institutions have already geared up to provide solutions for the benefits of the community. Moreover, there are many constraints that have to be resolved before providing any standard solution.
