IJARAS is now in its third year of publication, during which it hosted many an important contribution from top-notch scholars from all over the world. Chevalier, C. Julien (Université Toulouse 3 Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France), C. Soulé-Dupuy (Université Toulouse 1 Capitole, Toulouse, France) Abstract: Searching information can be realized thanks to specific tools called Information Retrieval Systems IRS (also called “search engines”). To provide more accurate results to users, most of such systems offer personalization features. To do this, each system models a user in order to adapt search results that will be displayed. In a multi-application context (e.g. when using several search engines for a unique query), personalization techniques can be considered as limited because the user model (also called profile) is incomplete since it does not exploit actions/queries coming from other search engines. So, sharing user models between several search engines is a challenge in order to provide more efficient personalization techniques. A semantic architecture for user profile interoperability is proposed to reach this goal. This architecture is also important because it can be used in many other contexts to share various resources models, for instance a document model, between applications. It is also ensuring the possibility for every system to keep its own representation of each resource while providing a solution to easily share it. “How to Trust: A Model for Trust Decision Making,” by M. Felici (The University of Edinburgh, UK) Abstract: This paper concerns decision-making processes that rely on trust. In particular, it analyzes how different aspects of trust (e.g. trust, trustworthiness, trustworthy evidence) influence trust decisions, and acting on them eventually. It proposes a trust decision model that structures the analysis of contextualized trust problems. Rather than seeking a general definition of trust, this paper advocates the necessity to have a structured way to analyze and characterize situational trust problems systematically. “A Variable Context Model for Adaptable Service-Based Applications,” by A. Bucchiarone (Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento, Italy), C. Cappiello, E. Di Nitto, B. Pernici, and A. Sondonini (Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy) Abstract: Service-based applications (SBAs) rely on the invocation of services. The use of the service paradigm usually guarantees a high level of flexibility. In fact, applications can be easily reconfigured in order to continuously offer functionalities also in dynamic execution environments. This happens by changing the service selection and their composition. This flexibility can be exploited to design adaptable SBAs able to react to events that could happen during the application lifecycle. The execution flow of adaptable SBAs automatically changes on the basis of the context in which they are executing. The context includes information ranging from the situation in which users access the service-based applications to the status of the components involved in the execution of such applications. In this paper we propose a way to use context information to adapt SBAs. In particular, our goal is to discuss the way in which the context should be defined and managed in order to be exploited in the various activities related to the adaptation of service-based applications. “RELADO: RELiable and ADaptive Opportunistic Routing Protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks,” R. Bruno, M. Conti (IIT-CNR, Pisa, Italy), M. Nurchis (IMT Lucca, Lucca, Italy) Abstract: Opportunistic routing is considered as one of the most promising techniques to effectively limit performance degradation in wireless mesh networks caused by unpredictable channel variations and high loss rates. This paradigm defers the selection of the next hop after the packet reception to take advantage of any opportunity provided by broadcast transmissions. Most of the existing opportunistic approaches base the forwarder selection on end-to-end principles. However, in multi-hop wireless environments the cost of a path is not uniformly distributed over space, nor constant over time, hence even two equal-cost paths might present significantly different link quality distributions one from the other. This encourages the use of localized context to implement a more accurate selection of the possible forwarders after each packet transmission. Hence, in this paper we propose RELADO, an adaptive opportunistic routing protocol able to efficiently combine end-to-end with local information to ensure transmission resilience across the network. With this flexibility, RELADO is able to reduce packet loss by ensuring the best trade-off between throughput maximization and packet progress. An extensive set of ns2 simulations confirms the potentiality of RELADO to improve network performance when compared to both legacy unicast and opportunistic routing protocols. “Dual Monitoring Communication for Self-Aware Network-on-Chip: Architecture and Case Study,” L. Guang, E. Nigussie, J. Plosila (University of Turku, Finland), H. Tenhunen (Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden) Abstract: Self-aware and adaptive Network-on-Chip (NoC) with dual monitoring networks is presented. Proper monitoring interface is an essential prerequisite to adaptive system reconfiguration in parallel on-chip computing. This work proposes a DMC (dual monitoring communication) architecture to support self-awareness on the NoC platform. One type of monitoring communication is integrated with data channel, in order to trace the run-time profile of data communication in high-speed on-chip networking. The other type is separate from the data communication, and is needed to report the run-time profile to the supervising monitor. Direct latency monitoring on mesochronous NoC is presented as a case study. Data message latency is directly traced in the integrated communication with a novel latency monitoring table in each router. The latency information is reported by the separate monitoring communication to the supervising monitor, which reconfigures the system to adjust the latency, for instance by dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. With quantitative evaluation using synthetic traces and real applications, the effectiveness and efficiency of direct latency monitoring with DMC architecture is demonstrated. Additionally, new emerging multimedia services are being introduced. These developments in the multimedia arena mean that various content and services will be delivered over different networks, and the users expect to consume these services using those networks, depending on the availability and reach of the network at the time of consumption. This massive heterogeneity in terms of terminal/network capabilities and user expectations requires efficient solutions for the transport of modern media in an interoperable and universal fashion. In particular, in recent years, the Internet has become an important channel for the delivery of multimedia. The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is widely used on the Internet and it has also become a primary protocol for the delivery of multimedia content. Additionally, standards developing organizations (SDOs) such as MPEG have developed various technologies for multimedia transport and encapsulation, e.g., MPEG2-TS (Transport Stream) and MPEG4 file format. These technologies have been widely adopted and are heavily deployed by various providers and in different applications and services, such as digital broadcasting, audio and video transport over the Internet and streaming to mobile phones, etc. At the same time, many other SDOs such as the IETF, IEEE, and 3GPP have provided various protocols to deliver multimedia content packetized or packaged by such MPEG transport technologies. This special issue solicits novel contributions and breaking results on all aspects of Adaptive Streaming of Multimedia. The main objectives of this special issue are (but not limited to): - Efficient delivery of multimedia content in an adaptive, progressive download/streaming fashion (incl. over HTTP); - Support for streaming of live multimedia, to mobile users, low-capacity channels, bandwidth variations, as well as multipoint streaming over heterogeneous channels or paths; - Efficient and ease of use of existing content distribution infrastructure components such as CDNs, proxies, caches, NATs and firewalls; - Efficient content generation (encoding) techniques for content delivery (e.g., segmentation); - Detailed performance analyses of deployed standard technologies or that uncover and rectify major problems in the behavior of such technologies; - Measurement techniques for collecting consumption data (both application and transport-level performance metrics, viewer behavior, etc.) in content delivery; - The effects of adaptation techniques on the end-user quality of experience; - Viewer experiences from large-scale experiments and events (such as Olympics, World Cup, etc.). This is fostered through panel discussions, keynotes, and invited talks where academia is exposed to state-of-practice and results from industry trials, and interoperability experiments. The industry is benefited in turn by exposure to leading-edge research in networking as well the opportunity to communicate to academic researchers which practical problems require further research. Further, an opportunity is provided to discuss governmental policies and make recommendations as appropriate to promote an innovation economy in India. After the past successful WiVEC editions in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 the fifth IEEE WiVEC symposium will be co-located with the 77th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2013 Spring, and will take place in Dresden on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2013. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVEC and VTC events. All accepted papers (full length and demo papers) will be included in the VTC 2013-Spring conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. Note: VTC Fall editions are traditionally located in North America, while VTC Spring is located in other areas of the world. Since WiVEC was originally launched co-located with VTC Fall editions, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society decided that WiVEC would take place every year and a half in order to ensure that the conference is alternatively co-located with VTC Fall and Spring editions. Example sensing application domains include personalized mobile information delivery, context aware social networking, healthcare, games and entertainment, education, device and environment customization, safety, and mobile business. The efficient and effective design of mobile sensing applications opens up many interesting technical challenges. The PhoneSense workshop promotes exchange of ideas among academic and industrial researchers in research areas such as sensing, mobile computing, location, energy efficiency, data management, data mining, machine learning, inference, privacy, user incentives and applications. The workshop considers hot topics, position papers, novel ideas, in-progress work on system architecture, enabling technologies, and emerging applications. Referred to as machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, it is essentially composed of three key ingredients: 1) a wireless end-device, 2) an infrastructure-based or infrastructure-less wireless carrier network, and 3) the back-end server network. M2M systems bear very specific and unparalleled challenges in both research and development. Prime design drivers here are the need for virtually zero-outage, immediate-response and high-efficiency to support reliable, green, long-living and delay-constrained M2M applications. With no clear winner established so far, two orthogonal approaches have thus commenced to contend for the M2M market, i.e. 1) cellular solutions which rely on wide coverage (GSM, UMTS, LTE, LTE-A, etc.); and 2) purely embedded short-range solutions relying on cheap deployments (low-power Wi-Fi, ultralow-power Bluetooth, ZigBee, etc.). The aim of this special issue on machine-to-machine is to collect from industrial and academic players tutorials and surveys related to latest M2M technologies and architectures. Contributions on major developments and updates on M2M systems will be considered. Of great interest are currently being standardized, already standardized but also promising M2M technologies and architectures. For example, there is a need to better understand the gaps between the quality of service (QoS) requirements of cloud-based applications and the variable performance of wireless networks due to the dynamic channel environments, and to develop novel solutions to overcome these gaps. Moreover, the design and operations of mobile cloud computing should also be sensitive to the limited energy supply in the mobile devices and system-wide energy conservation in general. As a result, advanced cognitive and adaptive techniques are highly deman ded for mobile cloud computing. Moreover, new perspectives can be taken by both academic researchers and practitioners to demystify the technical challenges and propose ground-breaking solutions. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking - pervasive social networking PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and should not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined PerCom 2012 Workshops Proceedings and will appear on IEEE Xplore. At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral presentation at the workshop is strictly required. Failure to present the paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper from the proceedings as well as from IEEE Xplore. Presentation at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas that are a year or more from submission as a full conference paper to the ACM MobiSys conference or other high-quality conferences. Submitting a full-length paper on the same topic to MobiSys in less than a year is unlikely to involve a sufficient increment of work and maturity of ideas. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Years of effort had been given by researchers and engineers to maximize the lifetime of WSNs in almost all the aspects, e.g., routing, topology control, deployment, data aggregation, clustering, and sleep scheduling. However, recently advanced technical developments have allowed sensor nodes to harvest environmental energy from natural sources, e.g., wind, water flow, ocean currents, and solar, which enable WSNs to have the rechargeable energy supply. With multiple energy sources, the overall efficiency, reliability and sustainability are enhanced in any WSN application system. This emerging technical development gives sensor nodes a totally different energy model compared to traditional battery powered sensor nodes, which fundamentally changed the assumption for many existing lifetime optimization schemes. We should look back almost all traditional challenging issues in WSNs to cope with this new changing. New research issues, e.g., power management with multiple energy sources, should also be considered. This special issue aims at seeking new approaches, methods, and schemes for solving both traditional and new challenging issues in WSNs with environmental energy harvesting. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not under review in any other journal. The topics suggested can be discussed in term of concepts, state of the art, standards, designs, implementations, running experiments or applications. Internet data traffic continues to grow rapidly. The challenge that operators face, especially in the mobile Internet, is to support more subscribers with higher bandwidth demands. Therefore, operators need to seek for new technologies to efficiently utilize the available network resources, in particular, this concerns resource allocation and flow management. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. The higher rate of optical technology in access networks introduces the potential for capacity sharing problems to move closer to the core, while passive optical networks move sharing problems closer to the end-user (more like cable and radio access networks). Data centers typically employ yet another type of network with different characteristics -- and different tools for capacity sharing. Addressing this topic correctly is not trivial as there are different interests to consider: operators naturally want to be able exercise control on how the network is used, avoid service disruptions and account for network usage. Users are interested to use different applications and expect a certain level of service quality, consistent experience etc. Many applications today are provided by so-called over-the-top (OTT) providers -- in conjunction with web-services, smart-phone applications etc. These applications and the corresponding platforms are important drivers for innovation and sources of revenue -- although there is controversy over whether enough revenue is directed into capacity growth. Still, application providers are interested in their application working with sufficient quality. In addition, there is regulation that can impose additional requirements in some markets, such as availability requirements, network neutrality etc. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the area of transport protocols, system designers of fixed and mobile access networks, and their applications to advance the state of research on capacity sharing. We solicit contributions on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. Currently, a number of companies are offering a plethora of sensing devices with different phenomena's monitoring capabilities. These devices, a.k.a. sensors, can be tiny with limited energy and processing capabilities; they can be stand alone or integrated in various and they can be deployed to form a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in support to a variety of military, civil, and environmental applications. In a WSN, the sensors are also capable to communicate with each other and in a multihop way propagate sensing information to data sinks and operations centers. In the last few years, wireless sensor networking has been a very active research area in both academia and the industry with a wide variety of applications. While the set of challenges in sensor networks are diverse, researches have mainly focused on fundamental networking challenges, which include: routing protocols and energy minimization. However, the performances of the proposed solutions strongly depend on the way sensors were positioned in the area. To that end, the goal of this special issue is to report on recent advances in wireless sensor network planning and deployment. Its scope is open for both theoretical and practical contributions related to WSN architecture, planning, deployments, and applications. Many applications and software systems are being developed in this environment. However, the high heterogeneity of the devices' hardware and software, the wide range of communication options available (3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, WAVE, etc.), the resource limitations (e.g., power), and mobility itself make the development of appropriate software a difficult task. Therefore, the use of some middleware as a supporting platform and abstraction mechanism could be of great help for developers. In this special issue, we plan to collect research related to the design and development of middleware platforms and services that facilitate the development and deployment of systems and software to manage data in mobile computing scenarios. The efficient and effective design of mobile sensing applications opens up many interesting technical challenges. The PhoneSense workshop promotes exchange of ideas among academic and industrial researchers in research areas such as sensing, mobile computing, location, energy efficiency, data management, data mining, machine learning, inference, privacy, user incentives and applications. The workshop considers hot topics, position papers, novel ideas, in-progress work on system architecture, enabling technologies, and emerging applications. This global aging problem demands an increased focus on preparing pervasive healthcare systems and applications deployed around users and capable of remotely caring for them and improving their health and well-being anywhere anytime. These systems and applications require a sophisticated integration of microcircuit, medical sensing, and wireless and mobile technologies. They largely benefit users by decreasing the dependability on special caregivers and eventually reducing healthcare expenses through a more efficient use of healthcare resources and an earlier detection of life-threatening emergency situations. However, the realization of pervasive healthcare sets some additional critical requirements, e.g. realtimeness and fault-tolerance, and reliability, security and efficiency challenges compared with traditional hospital-based systems. Exploitation of Information and Communications Technologies as well as Networking and Sensors Technologies will enable cost-effective and efficient healthcare delivery, capable to deal with physical and logical mobility of patients and devices. These need to adapt to both the requirements of the current applications, policies from the corresponding actors and stakeholders and corresponding networking context. The currently available alternatives are rather rigid and thus do not fulfill the aforementioned challenges and needs. The connectivity embraces various levels and layers, and can refer to either the access part of the network as well as the end-to-end paths which shall be established and managed. This problem is being analyzed in the context of the Scalable and Adaptive Internet Solutions (SAIL) project, in particular within the Open Connectivity Services workpackage, with a special emphasis on the relationship of connectivity with Information Centric Networking and Cloud Networking. This workshop considers, among others, the following aspects: - Architectures and frameworks to handle connectivity for the Future Internet - Testbeds and prototyping related activities - Security for connectivity services - Evaluation of connectivity services to be used over Wireless Mesh Networks and DTNs - Connectivity services for Information Centric Networking - Connectivity services for Cloud Computing Paper Submission We encourage submissions of high-quality technical papers reporting original research that has not been previously published, and is not currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Internet data traffic continues to grow rapidly. The challenge that operators face, especially in the mobile Internet, is to support more subscribers with higher bandwidth demands. Therefore, operators need to seek for new technologies to efficiently utilize the available network resources, in particular, this concerns resource allocation and flow management. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. The higher rate of optical technology in access networks introduces the potential for capacity sharing problems to move closer to the core, while passive optical networks move sharing problems closer to the end-user (more like cable and radio access networks). Data centers typically employ yet another type of network with different characteristics -- and different tools for capacity sharing. Addressing this topic correctly is not trivial as there are different interests to consider: operators naturally want to be able exercise control on how the network is used, avoid service disruptions and account for network usage. Users are interested to use different applications and expect a certain level of service quality, consistent experience etc. Many applications today are provided by so-called over-the-top (OTT) providers -- in conjunction with web-services, smart-phone applications etc. These applications and the corresponding platforms are important drivers for innovation and sources of revenue -- although there is controversy over whether enough revenue is directed into capacity growth. Still, application providers are interested in their application working with sufficient quality. In addition, there is regulation that can impose additional requirements in some markets, such as availability requirements, network neutrality etc. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the area of transport protocols, system designers of fixed and mobile access networks, and their applications to advance the state of research on capacity sharing. We solicit contributions on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. Topics ------ Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to * Context-aware resource allocation & cross-layer adaptation * Similarities and differences of capacity sharing in mobile and fixed access networks * Application-layer adaption for mobile services * Transport layer solutions and possible interactions with cellular/fixed access networks * Capacity sharing in data centers for Cloud Computing * The interaction between capacity sharing mechanisms at different layers * Leveraging Software-Defined Networking for Capacity Sharing * QoE and fairness definitions, metrics and evaluation * Data traffic characteristics in fixed and mobile Internet * Economic aspects on capacity sharing and business models * Related standardization activities and projects Submission ---------- Submissions must be original, unpublished work, and not under consideration at another conference or journal.
