Special Issue on Research Advances and Standardization Activities in WLANs Elsevier Computer Communications http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computer-communications/call-for-papers/re… Scope ================================== A new generation of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is going to make its appearance in the upcoming years, with the IEEE 802.11aa (Robust Audio Video Transport Streaming), IEEE 802.11ac (Very-high throughput < 6GHz), IEEE 802.11af (TV White Spaces) and IEEE 802.11ad (Very-high throughput ~ 60 GHz), as examples of the most expected ones. Nevertheless, all next-generation standards will consider some of the most significant advances on the wireless communication and networking area in the last decade, developed by a highly active community, in both academia and industry. This special issue requests papers that advance the state-of-the-art of the recent and on-going IEEE 802.11 standards (i.e., IEEE 802.11p, IEEE 802.11s, IEEE 802.11aa, IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ad, IEEE 802.11ae, IEEE 802.11ah, IEEE 802.11af, IEEE 802.11ai, etc.), as well as present mechanisms and solutions, from MAC or above layers, that could be readily transferred to the not-yet finished standards or their future amendments. Please, note that pure PHY-layer papers are outside the scope of this Special Issue, although cross-layer approaches are welcome. In addition, there is special interest in those papers that provide new theoretical and/or experimental insights on the performance of the new and on-going IEEE 802.11 standards in real application scenarios, as well as propose optimal parameter configurations to make them work as much efficiently as possible. Papers proposing, evaluating and comparing disruptive approaches to the path followed by the IEEE 802.11 standards are also very much appreciated. To get that overview as quick as possible and to coordinate the rescue teams during their mission, it is essential that the teams are able to communicate with each other. However, as the disaster area is unknown and the previous communication infrastructure may be broken, the rescue teams ideally have to bring their own communication equipment to set up an independent infrastructure. Such an infrastructure may be based on small, fast, and autonomously flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that are able to fly over affected areas. These devices carry network equipment that creates an ad-hoc communication network infrastructure among all UAVs, dedicated for the rescue teams. Such a basic communication system can be used to coordinate the teams, to search for people that need help by scanning for isolated cell phones, or to offer new kinds of applications that assist the rescue teams during their work. In the second step, this temporary network can be extended by devices that have more capabilities than UAVs, for example cars or trucks that are able to carrying heavy base stations. Having such a system would be very beneficial for rescue teams that enter large-scale disaster areas. However, as each disaster scenario is different and each deployment poses different challenges, it must be possible to adapt such a communication system to the specific needs of arbitrary disaster scenarios easily. Requirements of such a system include: * adaptation to arbitrary disaster scenarios, e. g. by defining missions in a dedicated language, * having a communication scheme among the nodes that copes with mobility, * offering basic services for common tasks, e. g. scanning for infrastructure remains, and * it has to incorporate self-organized algorithms, to follow missions autonomously. This workshop will cover aspects of such communication architectures dedicated to disaster scenarios as a whole. It brings together researchers working on different layers of communication systems, as working on such an architecture benefits from knowledge regarding a broad set of aspects. By 2020, several tens of billions of devices are predicted to be connected. However many challenges and problems remain unsolved as of now or not fully addressed due to the unique features of IoT systems. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. During this era, there has been a tremendous growth in this field with many new techniques and standards have been developed for the ease and safety of the passengers. Now, the passengers during travelling can take smart decisions by knowing the outside environment variables such as traffic conditions, density of the vehicles in a particular region, duration of traffic lights in a particular areas, etc. Moreover, these passengers can download and upload the heavy contents while travelling with the aid of the already deployed Road Side Unit (RSUs) which are connected to Internet to provide various services to the end users. Modern Vehicles equipped with sensor nodes monitor and collect the data in sparse and dense regions which can be processed for the benefit of community of peoples, e.g., health monitoring and diagnostic systems, safety alarms, intelligent transport systems, and environment monitoring. The vehicles during movement, equipped with sensor nodes, can also collect the data from human body and that data can be processed in collaboration with the other vehicles for various medical purposes. In this case, VANETs can also be used in Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). However, as a new technology emerges, it throws new challenges to the research community. Although there exist many solutions of different kinds in the relevant areas, there is still a requirement of more efficient solutions which can be used in wide variety of applications. Many industrial and academic institutions have already geared up to provide solutions for the benefits of the community. Moreover, there are many constraints that have to be resolved before providing any standard solution. However, the energy harvesting process may be sporadic, due to which nodes may temporarily run out of energy. Algorithms and protocols need to be designed that are robust to the sporadic and possibly limited energy resources available for sensing and communication. Energy efficiency (EE) is a topic of very active research in wireless communications and networking. However, realistic evaluations in real-world deployments are challenging and time consuming. Often, different simplifying assumptions are made, which makes the results (a) applicable only in specific scenarios, and (b) hard to compare across literature. There is thus a need to come up with standardized tools for benchmarking, and to develop absolute yardsticks against which all schemes that strive to improve the EE of communications can be evaluated and compared. With the recent advances in simulator tools as well as an increasing number of testbeds, the next step in evaluating energy efficiency is now practicable: realistic evaluations of energy efficiency for wireless systems, wireless sensor networks and mobile systems. This workshop aims to bring together academic experts and industrial researchers interested in the design and development of EHC, realistic evaluations of the EE and energy consumption of architectures and protocols, and novel applications in wireless communications and networks. It will create a forum for researchers to share results and collectively identify design principles for optimizing the performance of EHC and EE evaluations. Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact, promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure, where interaction and communication occur opportunistically. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. According to Google’s metrics, such proceedings are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index, respectively equal to 19 and 33. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of pervasive computing. In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a “destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed by Scopus). The objective of ICCPS 2013, the 4th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, is to serve as a single-track forum for reporting advances in all aspects of cyber-physical systems, including but not limited to theory, tools, applications, systems, and testbeds. The Communication Software Award honors the best practice-oriented application, tool, framework, or demonstration showing innovative and original research in the areas of networks, communication, or distributed systems. Submissions of novel, original work from both academia and industry are invited, nominations of students, from academic research projects, or SME are especially encouraged. Products commercially available during the NetSys 2013 conference already, are excluded from the awards. Nominations of either single applicants or groups are welcome, the best student application may get an additional award. The submission should include an extended abstract of up to two pages. They should include authorship (with affiliations), the problem domain and application of the communication software nominated, platform requirements, and the envisioned licensing scheme, and they should explicitly state what will be demonstrated at the NetSys 2013 conference and how the audience will be able to interact and experiment with it. The following assessment criteria should additionally be explicitly addressed: - the relevance to its application in practice - innovation and novelty of the new software - enhancements as compared to prior systems - the state of the software and its maturity for application All nominations will undergo a preliminary review process for short listing. These devices, a.k.a. sensors, can be tiny with limited energy and processing capabilities; they can be stand alone or integrated in various and they can be deployed to form a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in support to a variety of military, civil, and environmental applications. In a WSN, the sensors are also capable to communicate with each other and in a multihop way propagate sensing information to data sinks and operations centers. In the last few years, wireless sensor networking has been a very active research area in both academia and the industry with a wide variety of applications. While the set of challenges in sensor networks are diverse, researches have mainly focused on fundamental networking challenges, which include: routing protocols and energy minimization. However, the performances of the proposed solutions strongly depend on the way sensors were positioned in the area. To that end, the goal of this special issue is to report on recent advances in wireless sensor network planning and deployment. This is becoming necessary in order to transition to a more sustainable energy generation and consumption and reduce its adverse effects on the environment. While more advances in areas like renewable energies and network control are necessary, advances in communication technologies, data fusion and mining, as well as scheduling and optimization are also critical in order to achieve this vision. It is anticipated that the same communication technologies that have revolutionized our way of life in the past decades, ranging from sensor networks, mobile Internet, cloud computing, smart phones and many others, will have direct applicability to Smart Grid. Many off-the-shelf and commercial communication technologies may be ready for deployment in the Smart Grid today. Examples include the use of wireless communications to collect and exchange information about electric quality, consumption, pricing, etc. However, allowing greater flexibility in sharing information in a secure and reliable fashion still poses a number of challenges. Furthermore, using off-the-shelves technologies may lead to inefficiencies, especially if energy management specific features are not utilized adequately in the data compression and the collection infrastructure. Questions that remain unanswered in the smart grid context, include, coverage, interference, spectrum sharing, architecture, network topology, access control and authentication, data representation, data fusion and many more. This series of IEEE JSAC is focused on identifying the numerous communication challenges posed by the various aspects and functionalities of the Smart Grid and exploring research avenues for addressing them.
