CALL FOR PAPERS
SCOPE: Active networking aims at providing easy,
but robust, introduction of new network services
to devices such as routers and switches by adding
dynamic programmability to network equipment.
Network programmability and service deployment
architectures bring just the right services to
the customer at just the right time and location.
With the accelerating trend towards mobility,
ad-hoc networks, and content-aware distribution,
active and programmable networks will play an
important role in future network architectures.
IWAN 2004 brings together members of various
communities using active and related techniques
to address these challenges and provides a forum
for discussion and collaboration involving
researchers, developers, service providers and
potential users. We encourage the submission of
papers that cover all aspects of active network
based communication, including foundations of
robust languages and security mechanisms, active
transport, active services and service
deployment, active terminals, and active

2nd International Workshop on Middleware for
Pervasive and Ad-Hoc Computing
http://www.smartlab.cis.strath.ac.uk/MPAC/
A Workshop of Middleware 2004
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
October 18th - 22nd, 2004
Problem Space
Building on the success of the 2003 workshop, this workshop
seeks to develop, through establishing the state of the art,
a roadmap for research on essential software infrastructures
for ad-hoc and pervasive computing. Marc Weiser's dream is
one of a world of pervasive devices, leveraging contextual
information, to provide an increasingly interactive and
responsive environment to users, to aid them in their
everyday activities.
However, despite considerable progress, the promise of
pervasive computing outlined by Mark Weiser still remains
elusive, with most developments focusing on point-examples
of technology. There is a need for processing, storage and
network infrastructure to support as well as development
tools, in order to build large scale pervasive systems.
We believe that central to these infrastructures are
underpinning middleware technologies. In particular,
that pervasive computing middleware will allow you to
take advantage of the resources in your environment to
tailor your services and applications for seamless access
to services and unrestricted mobility. Ad-hoc networking
middleware will permit the formation of ad-hoc communities
for new applications. However, existing middleware technologies
do not fully exploit the potential of such pervasive and ad-hoc
environments. For instance, current ad hoc middleware technologies
focus on the use of ad hoc networks as connection-ware to connect
a single user to a single device for accessing its services or
resources.
In this workshop we focus on these core areas of middleware for
ad-hoc and pervasive systems. We seek to compliment the discussion
and presentations at Middleware 2004, by providing a forum focused
on the specific problems of large scale, real world, pervasive
computing environments through the identification of appropriate
core architectures, languages, and systems. Moreover, we seek to
develop a community of researchers who will specifically target
the development of practical and sustainable pervasive environments
and provide the key elements needed by future developers of
large-scale pervasive environments.
The workshop will seek papers on the areas, but not limited to, listed
below:
Theoretical foundations and middleware support for context based
adaptation for mobile pervasive systems;
New notations for specifying context-sensitive systems;
Ad-hoc communities: applications, infrastructure and middlware support;
Roles and responsibilities in ad-hoc communities;
Group management and communication support for ad-hoc communities;
Ad-hoc network communications, quality of service, management and
middleware support;
Sensor networks: applications, infrastructure and middleware support;
Service-connection middleware and architectures;
Support for zero configuration;
Middleware for self-assembly, self-configuration, self-distribution;
Data management infrastructure for adhoc and pervasive systems
Trust, security, and privacy for pervasive systems;
Technology trade-offs (agent infrastructures, mobile code systems, event
based middleware);
Resource discovery and management;
Implications of heterogeneity (addressing needs for protocol interaction
across technologies).
Submission
The workshop format will be focused around submission of position papers
of no more than 8 pages. Papers are solicited that present a view of the
state of the art in a particular sub-problem area and which then present
a position on the how/what/why for the next stages and challenges for
middleware technologies. 75% of the workshop will be devoted to
presentation
and discussion of these papers. The remaining 25% of time will be
devoted
to developing the outline of a roadmap and engaging all participants in
the
further writing and publication.
Papers will be reviewed by at least 2 members of the programme
committee.
The review process will be based upon identifying the veracity of the
state-of-the-art statement and the relevance and potential of the
position
statement to contribute to the elaboration of the roadmap.
Appropriate publication of the workshop submissions and the roadmap is
being investigated.

*********************************************************************
Scope of EWSN 2005:
===================
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are fast emerging as a new sensing
paradigm based on the collaborative effort of large number of sensors
deployed close to or inside the phenomenon to be observed, and have
the potential of providing diverse services to numerous applications.
The realization of WSNs require intensive technical research efforts
especially on energy efficient scalable wireless ad hoc communication
protocols due to their unusual application requirements and unique
constraints. Additionally, WSNs are further evolving from simple data
transportation networks to functionally rich distributed systems such
that the tasks of event sensing and acting upon the phenomenon can be
collectively realized in an autonomous manner by sensor and actuator
nodes.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from
different backgrounds ranging from hardware to applications, to
create a forum where cross-layer integration, novel solutions for
specific problems, and the future development of WSN functionalities
can be discussed.
We encourage contributions describing innovative work on WSN. Areas
of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Hardware for WSN: transceiver concepts, wakeup radio, antenna
design, system integration, process and cost of manufacturing,
battery technology, energy scavenging
* Communication protocols: MAC and link layer problems, routing and
transport protocols tailored for WSN, redundancy, data aggregation,
and mobility support; gateways to fixed Internet; providing
functionalities like localization and synchronization
* Source coding techniques appropriate for WSN to support data fusion
* Middleware for WSN: Configuration and installation support, lookup
of available functionalities, group communication, distributed
algorithms in WSN, harmonizing node-centric and data-centric
addressing, integrating WSN in middleware architectures like .NET
* Security: primitives for appropriate cryptographic protocols,
secure system engineering
* Applications of WSN: novel applications and their requirements such
as medicine, environment control, etc.; experiences with real-world
applications
* What part will WSNs play in realizing the visions of ubiquitous
computing & communication and Ambient Intelligence.
* Prototypes, field studies, and testbeds: novel sensor node
prototypes, measurements within sensor network testbeds
* Modeling of WSN: models for WSN load/applications, mobility or
channel models

*ADVANCES ON WIRELESS LANs AND PANs*
The recent evolution and successful deployment of Wireless Local Area
Networks (WLANs) and Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) worldwide
has paved the way to more intense standardization and R&D activities,
that target even more sophisticated and advanced WLAN/WPAN systems.
Standardization activities within the IEEE 802.11 working group are
already underway for evolving the dominant WLAN standard in several
aspects, including security, mobility and quality of service (QoS. In
addition, alternative physical and MAC layer proposals are being
considered for improving bit rates to ranges in excess of 100 Mbps.
Similar activities are taking placing within the ETSI BRAN project to
further evolve the HIPERLAN/2 standard. At the same time, the core
representative of WPANs, i.e. Bluetooth, is being further evolved by
IEEE 802.15 TG1. Other task groups within IEEE 802.15 develop
specifications for high- and low-rate WPANs, known as IEEE 802.15.3 and
IEEE 802.15.4 respectively. Moreover, interworking mechanisms are being
investigated for combining WLAN/WPANs and second-/third-generation
cellular networks into hybrid data networks, capable of very high bit
rates in strategic locations (hotspots). 3GPP is one notable
standardization body that currently standardizes such interworking
mechanisms. Last but not least, it is important to note the numerous
research projects worldwide that address a vast collection of issues
related to WLANs and WPANs, ranging from the seamless mobility across
UTRAN and WLAN (see for example the IST EVOLUTE project at
http://evolute.intranet.gr/) to heterogeneous multihop wireless networks
consisting of combinations of WPAN and WLAN technologies (see for
example the IST 6HOP project).
All these activities combined with market forecasts, which report that
WLANs and WPANs will encounter a tremendous growth in the next years,
demonstrate that WLAN and WPAN technologies will play a significant role
in the future and will severely impact our business and personal life
styles. However, several issues still need to be efficiently addressed,
including power consumption, physical and MAC layer architecture, radio
resource management, interworking, QoS, security, co-existence with
other unlicensed technologies, self configuration, etc.
The goal of this special issue is to address the above issues and
provide a timely and concise reference of the current activities and
research findings in the fields of WLANs and WPANs. In addition, it aims
to address the key technical challenges associated with these
technologies. In this context, papers are solicited that describe
original and unpublished contributions on representative topics, such as:
* Authentication and Security in WLANs and WPANs
* QoS and policy issues in WLANs/WPANs
* Interworking between WLAN and WPAN technologies
* WLANs and 2G/3G interworking
* Emerging MAC protocols
* Technologies for very-high-bit-rate WLANs
* Mobility issues and mobility protocols
* Support of multimedia over WLAN/WPAN
* Multihop and ad hoc architectures
* Applications tailored to WLANs/WPANs
* Radio resource management techniques
* WLANs/WPANs in 4G networks
* WLANs/WPANs co-existence issues
* Voice/video over WLANs and WPANs
* Standardization activities
* Performance studies
* Self organization in WLAN networks
* Management of large scale WLAN networks

** CALL FOR PAPERS **
JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Special Issue on Management of Active and Programmable
Networks
Manuscript due March 30, 2005
------------------------------------------------------------
Active networks provide a framework enabling code and data
to reside within network packets such that injected code can
modify behavior of low-level network layers. Programmable
networks allow customization o data-plane and control-plane
services (e.g.: using network processor methods in high-
speed routers or software radio methods in wireless
networks). This raises fundamental management issues
regarding the relation and tradeoffs among communication and
computation, configuration, fault, security, performance,
and accounting management.
AD HOC WIRELESS NETWORKS and SOFTWARE RADIOS are being
facilitated by the advancement of active networks; however,
they add another level of complexity to active and
programmable network management. The relationship between
computation and communication can be addressed by concepts
from algorithmic information theory (e.g.: Kolmogorov-
Chaitin Complexity). Active and programmable networks form
an ideal environment in which to study the effects of
tradeoffs in algorithmic and static information
representation. Active code can contain either the protocol
or a compressed form of the data to be transported. Other
divisions of code and state are possible between packets
(e.g.: routers with dynamic packet state and customizable
data-plane code).
------------------------------------------------------------
This special issue of the Journal of Network and Systems
Management will consider topics associated with the
management of active and programmable networks. Submissions
will span a broad range of topics, e.g.:
* Bridging the gap among the large and growing body of work
in algorithmic information theory and applications to the
health, management, and security of an active or
programmable network
* Fundamental relationships between computation and
communication applied to active or programmable networks;
relationship of code vs. data tradeoffs utilized to control
access of information, system vulnerability detection,
policy enforcement, etc. within an active or programmable
network
* Self-organization and composition of active network
services; self-configuration of active or programmable
networks
* Case studies involving the management of dynamic
adaptation and performance enabled by active networks
* Active or programmable networks used to manage and control
mobile ad hoc network operation and legacy networks
* Active or programmable network management of QoS:
controlled amounts of code vs. data that adapt to link
quality
* Management of active packets in constrained devices such
as sensors
* Active and programmable network management techniques
applied to link and physical layer network components e.g.
software radio waveforms
* Improvement or replacement of defacto management standard
access and control such as SNMP with active or programmable
mechanisms
