Overview: With the recent advances in wireless communications, the
automotive industry is leading to evolution. To succeed in this emerging
era of technology, the Internet of Connected Vehicles (IoCV) has emerged
as one of the potential applications of the Internet of Things (IoT). It
refers to the dynamic mobile communication systems that communicate
between vehicles and public networks to enhance the connectivity between
cars via technology. By offering a wide variety of infotainment
services, fleet operations, and in-vehicle applications, IoCV has gained
the tremendous capacity to provide a safer and sustainable
transportation system to the society. According to Gartner Inc., “the
connected car is already a reality, and in-vehicle wireless connectivity
is expanding rapidly”. As a result, the evolution of cars into the IoT
will keep on accelerating the global market which is expected to grow by
270 percent by 2022. Further, the increasing deployment of sensors and
ever-evolving cognitive technology open up new opportunities for IoCV.
Due to these significant developments, connected vehicles are receiving
widespread attention from the major automotive giants such as Tesla,
BMW, Waymo (Google), Uber, Volvo, etc. Despite all the opportunities
offered by the IoCV, their highly dynamic topology and the increasing
number of vehicles pose challenges regarding delivering low-latency
vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications.
The fifth generation (5G) wireless networks emerge as a critical
provider to handle the stringent connectivity requirements of IoCV.
Moreover, with the development of massive multiple-input-
multiple-output (MIMO), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), terahertz
(THz) frequencies, millimetre-wave (mmWave), and heterogeneous networks
(HetNets), 5G intends to guarantee new capabilities related to
connectivity, data rates, transmission delay, throughput and moreover
quality of experience (QoE). Thus, integrating 5G cellular systems into
IoCV is a promising technology to achieve the goals mentioned above.
However, as we are moving towards the 5G communication era, the data
generated by connected vehicles is expected to grow exponentially; which
in turn brings significant challenges to 5G. Therefore, to promote
productivity, improve efficiency, and ensure the efficient handling of
continuous growing data, it requires the support of high computing
paradigm that can process the data with minimum delays. To accomplish
these objectives, a programmable and scalable network paradigm is the
need of the hour that can provide a variety of services to 5G-envisioned
IoCV in diversified scenarios.
In this direction, software-defined networking (SDN) and network
function virtualization (NFV) have gained much attention from the
research fraternity. They rely more on network programmability to
realize efficient network services. However, this traditional
device-to-device management paradigm falls short while dealing with 5G
mobile networks as it is characterized by a humongous cycle of connected
devices. To overcome these problems, intent-based networking (IBN) has
evolved as one of the paradigm shifts which combines automation with
intelligence. Typically, IBN is composed of four essential elements
namely, translation and validation, automated implementation, awareness
of network state, and assurance and dynamic optimization/remediation;
which takes the networking strategy to a higher level. Due to these
fundamental elements, IBN holds excellent potential for reliable network
support with quick turnaround and scalable services. Additionally, it
also facilitates simplified network operations with seamless integration
of artificial intelligence and machine learning. This, in turn, provides
more opportunities to build more robust and efficient network designs
for 5G-envisioned IoCV.
Thus, this special issue intends to offer an opportunity for researchers
(both from industry and academia) to present the dedicated efforts on
the key theories, innovative schemes, and significant applications for
realizing QoS in 5G-envisioned IoCV communication. This special issue
mainly focuses on collecting the original contributions related to
IBN-IoCV amalgamation in 5G wireless networks, which aims to provide
high-performance scalable computing to connected vehicles while
advancing the V2X communication infrastructure.
Topics of interest to this special issue include, but are not limited to:
-New opportunities/challenges/ use cases for IBN in 5G enabled IoCV
-Machine learning and optimisation-based algorithms, tools and solutions
-Distributed mobility management and network intelligence
-New architecture and communication protocols
-Innovative applications and services
-MIMO/massive MIMO/millimeter wave technologies
-Big data analytics and Industrial IoT Applications
-Role of cloud, edge and fog computing
-Secure, dependable and trustable cyber-physical systems
-Privacy protection and trust management
-Energy-efficient and green communication solutions
-Reliability, dependability, and fault tolerance support for IBN

variety of applications, including safety applications as well as
infotainment applications. More generally, future communicating cars
will evolve in a more intelligent environment also called smart cities.
In this context, the interaction between intelligent vehicles and
intelligent infrastructures will influence each other, to achieve each
other targets. In one hand, the car drivers (or automated cars) want to
travel in an efficient and safe manner and in the other hand smart
cities would try to offer the best life conditions for citizens by
reducing air pollution and noise for the inhabitants, and reducing
traffic congestion with a better traffic information system for car
drivers. Efficient interaction between vehicles and smart cities
infrastructures is naturally needed to reach these goals.
At the same time the set of the communicating vehicles is seen as an
Internet of Vehicles (IoV) platform providing several interesting
capacities. First with the increasing number of sensors embedded on
vehicles, a large variety of information can be collected and exploited
not only by vehicles but also by other stakeholders (car markers,
insurance companies, cities authorities, …). Second, the computing and
storage capacities available on vehicles can form a vehicular cloud that
can be exploited by third parties. Future smart cities are well placed
and a natural candidate to take profit from these extraordinary mobile
infrastructures. IWVSC'2019 aims at providing a forum and to bring
together people from both academia and industry, to discuss recent
developments in vehicular networking technologies and their interaction
with future smart cities in order to promote further research activities
and challenges.
We solicit technical papers describing original, previously unpublished

ACM/IEEE SEC '19 Call for Posters/Demos
We invite submissions for posters and live demos to the ACM/IEEE
Symposium on Edge Computing (SEC 2019) Poster session. The poster
session provides an opportunity to present early-stage,
not-yet-ready-for-prime-time research to receive valuable feedback from
the community.
Topics must fall within the purview of the SEC 2019 call for papers.
Posters are meant to introduce new or ongoing work and provide
opportunities for authors to interact directly with conference
attendees. Posters are especially suited for presenting controversial
research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not
yet validated through extensive evaluation. On the other hand, live
demos provide an opportunity to give a flavor of real-life applications
made possible by your system. Particularly encouraged are the
demonstrations that include participation by conference attendees.
Research prototypes as well as commercial products are welcome.
Demonstrations of previously published systems are also welcome. Posters
and demos will be presented during a specially designated session of the
conference.
To ensure maximum visibility and to garner high interest in the
Poster/Demo Session from all attendees, each accepted poster and demo
will have the opportunity to deliver a fast elevator pitch to overview
and stir interest in the posters.
Submission Instructions
Poster/Demo submissions must include an extended abstract no longer than
two 8.5x11-inch pages including all figures, but not including
references. This abstract should be formatted two-column formatting.
IEEE templates for Latex and Word that meet these specifications can be
found here.
The abstract title should begin with either "Poster:" or "Demo:".
Submissions must be in Adobe PDF format, and mailed to xchen26 [at] gmu
[dot] edu. With subject “SEC 2019 - Poster Submission” or “SEC 2019 -
Demo Submission”
Submissions will be judged based on their novelty as well as the
potential to generate discussions. Early-stage work will be preferred. A
good way to think about this is that if you are very close to submitting
to SEC, OSDI, SOSP, NSDI, (or similar other high profile conferences),
you may be past the sweet spot for the poster session.
The abstracts of accepted posters/demos will be posted on the conference
website and will appear in the conference proceedings.
Best Poster/Demo
All posters and demos will be considered for the Best Poster Award and
the Best Demo Award respectively. An independent review committee will
select the winners at the conference.
Poster/Demo Chair
Xiang Chen, George Mason University
Important Dates
Deadline for Submission: August 3rd, 2019, 11:59pm EDT
Notifications of Acceptance: August 23rd, 2019

Dear Colleagues,
this is an announcement of JNSM SI on Intelligent and Trustworthy
Internet Edge
JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT (SPRINGER)
SPECIAL ISSUE
Intelligent and Trustworthy Internet Edge
*** Submissions due: December 31, 2019 ***
https://www.springer.com/?SGWID=0-102-2-1338221-0
[We encourage early submission, please check the open submission
schedule policy below.]
The emerging and the ever-growing functionality of Internet edges, where
physical and virtual things are connected to the network, are opening a
wide set of new opportunities, both for novel services/applications and
increased efficiency/scalability. These opportunities include locally
sharing information, collaborating, and generating/consuming a huge
amount of data, by involving a variety of entities, such as micro-data
centers, end devices, and resource-sufficient networking nodes. While
Fog/Edge Computing is usually expected to bring the resources, including
storage and computation closer to users (in comparison to Cloud
Computing), a significant effort is needed at the Internet edge to
provide a trustworthy computation edge networking environment able to
support new computation technologies. Indeed, distributed big data
analytics, modern Machine Learning (ML) technology, Artificial
Intelligence (AI), real-time data collection and processing, scalable
and distributed security solutions such as blockchain, and distributed
secure data processing, may play a significant role. Moreover, new
networking technologies related to Information-Centric Networking (ICN),
Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization
(NFV), and network slicing have emerged as the novel paradigms for fast
and efficient delivering and retrieving data. This triggers the
convergence between the emerging networking concepts and the new
computation technologies to reach the vision of an intelligent and
trustworthy Internet edge.
In order to implement such trustworthy edge networks and services,
several operation and management challenges associated with intelligent
and trustworthy Internet edge need to be addressed. These challenges
include: trustworthy connectivity and network resource management for
heterogeneous networking (HetNet); security monitoring, measurement, and
assessment to ensure networking and management functions to protect
data; effective ML and computation models to consider different
resources (storage, networking, and computing), security requirements,
and real-time constraints; trustworthiness of data sources; in-network
data processing and aggregation, intelligent planning and decision
models to handle security and application requirements. This special
issue aims to bring together leading research on management
infrastructure, applications and the most recent advances in Internet
edge-based secure network management solutions. We hence encourage
original paper submissions, which have not been published or submitted
for publication elsewhere, from both academia and industry presenting
novel research addressing the aforementioned challenges.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Secure intelligent edge systems and networking
architectures/protocols to integrate storage, computation, and networking;
- Secure intelligent coordination and networking between edge,
fog, and cloud;
- Software architectures and toolkits for secure intelligent
Internet edge;
