*Scope and Motivation*
The increasing density of wireless devices, ever-growing demands for
extremely high-data rates, and the spectrum scarcity at the sub-6 GHz
bands are making the use of spectrum-rich millimeter-wave (mmWave)
frequencies among the most important components of future wireless
networks. The major commercial potential of mmWave networks has led to
mmWave being considered as a key element of 5G-and-beyond mobile
cellular networks, as well as for emerging Gbps-speed Wi-Fi networks
based on the IEEE 802.11ad and draft IEEE 802.11ay standards. Despite
this intense interest in mmWave from both the research community and
industry, much fundamental research is still needed, especially at the
networking layers.
Compared to traditional wireless communication systems, the special
propagation features and hardware constraints of mmWave systems
introduce many new challenges in the design of efficient and robust
medium access control (MAC), routing, and transport protocols.
Communication at such high frequencies suffers from high attenuation and
signal absorption as well as high penetration loss, requiring the use of
highly directional antennas. This move from conventional omnidirectional
networks to directional, blockage-prone mmWave connectivity marks a true
paradigm shift for mmWave networking, affecting the design of all
aspects of network control and resource management. The extremely high
data rates achievable at mmWave come at the price of high coordination
overhead. This in turn requires a radical rethinking of the design of
all aspects of network coordination and resource management, including
cell-discovery and initial access, mobility management, routing,
coordination, scheduling, user association, resource allocation, and
network planning.
Presently, there is arguably an adequate understanding of physical layer
issues. By contrast, the upper layers of the protocol stack are still
largely unexplored in the context of efficient and robust mmWave
networking. The severe channel attenuation, vulnerability to blockage by
mobile and environmental obstacles, inherent directionality of mmWave
links, the reduced interference footprint, complicated channel
establishment and mobility management, and high signaling overhead of
mmWave networks demand a thorough reconsideration of traditional
protocols and design principles at the MAC as well as the higher layers.
This special issue seeks new ideas to address networking challenges of
future mmWave networks. The purpose is not only to serve as a collection
of recent developments of mmWave communications, but also to inspire
readers/researchers to contribute in this exciting and promising field.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Extended versions of selected papers will be invited for publication on
a fast track special issue of Computer Communications (Elsevier) journal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to advancements in technology and development of new services, we
foresee a tremendous growth of new devices and smart things that need to
be connected to the Internet through a variety of wireless technologies.
At the same time, the edge of the Internet is increasingly empowered
with new capabilities, like pervasive sensing and computing power, which
opens the way to new domains, services and business models beyond
traditional mobile Internet, such as connected cars, participatory and
urban sensing, industrial IoT. As a consequence, new types of
information have to be delivered by the network with varying
requirements in terms of reliability, transmission rates and latency. To
cope with the exponential growth of devices and mobile data traffic,
there is a need for clean-slate or evolutionary Internet architectures
merging and assembling different network technologies, supporting new
paradigms for wired/wireless system planning and optimization, efficient
transport over heterogeneous wireless access options, efficient and
quality-aware content distribution, and new approaches for unified
operations and management of the heterogeneous components, like
software-defined systems and network function virtualization. These are
only some examples of the challenges that are of interest to IFIP WWIC 2019.
The IFIP WWIC 2019 conference takes a broader view to the merge of wired

SCOPE
======
By social good we refer to a “good” or a service that benefits the
largest number of people in the largest possible way. Some classic
examples of social goods are, of course, healthcare, safety,
environment, democracy, and human rights, but we can add to this classic
list even communication, art, entertainment and much more.
In this context, the popularity of portable computing devices, like
smartphones, tablets, or smart watches combined with the emergence of
many other small smart objects with computational, sensing and
communication capabilities coupled with the popularity of social
networks and new human-technology interaction paradigms is creating
unprecedented opportunities for each of us to do something useful,
ranging from a single person to the whole world. Furthermore, Internet
of Things, Smart-cities, distributed sensing and Fog computing are
representative examples of modern ICT paradigms that aim to describe a
dynamic and globally cooperative infrastructure built upon objects’
intelligence and self-configuring capabilities. These connected objects
are finding their way into our pockets, vehicles, urban areas and
infrastructure, thus becoming the very texture of our society and
providing us the possibility, but also the responsibility, to shape it.
In GOODTECHS we are hence interested in experiences with the design,
implementation, deployment, operation and evaluation of smart objects
and technologies for social good. Clearly, we are not considering only
the so called first world as the scenario for this evolution; we also
refer to those areas where ICT is currently less widespread, hoping that
it may represent a societal development opportunity rather than a source
for further divide.

Scope:
The Internet of Things is a paradigm that assumes a pervasive presence
in the environment of many smart things, including sensors, actuators,
embedded systems and other similar devices. The development of IoT,
however, has reached a crossroads, which means that without
intelligence, an IoT system will act as an ordinary information transfer
system. Emerging IoT applications in various fields, including smart
city, smart home, smart grid, e-health, intelligent transportation
systems, etc., require trustworthy networking solutions that are
resilient against high mobility, high density, disasters, infrastructure
failures, cyberattacks, and other disruptions. This interdisciplinary

CALL FOR PAPERS
MESN 2019
1st IEEE Workshop on
Mobile Energy Sharing Networks (MESN)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Energy is a scarce resource in any mobile and wireless networks that
consist of devices/vehicles mainly powered by their batteries. Providing
energy ubiquitously to these devices for making them functional for a long
time is a challenging task. With the advent of energy sharing techniques,
either by wired or wireless mediums (wireless power transfer – WPT), it is
possible to extend the lifetime of such networks by utilizing the energy
from other energy sources (e.g., chargers, other devices) within the
network. Recently, there is a growing number of research studies that adopt
the energy sharing for several energy optimization problems in different
applications of mobile networks including Wireless Sensor Network (WSN),
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN), Mobile Social Network (MSN) or Vehicular
Networks. Energy sharing has been applied between mobile agents ranging
from low-power devices such as sensors to moderate and high-power ones such
as smartphones and electric vehicles. However, depending on the networking
scenario as well as the form of energy sharing, different problems have
been studied. This diverse application scenario has on the other hand
resulted in isolated research communities working on the similar problems
based on the common energy sharing concept in mobile networks.
The objective of the workshop is to bring together academics, researchers,
and industry professionals from around the world to discuss and exchange
ideas on recent developments, current research challenges and future
directions in the use of energy sharing among mobile nodes in different
network applications and benefit from each other's findings and initiate
collaborations to address the interdisciplinary nature of the topic.
Toward this goal, the workshop will span the topics including but are not
limited to:
· Wirelessly rechargeable sensor networks
· Device-to-device (D2D) energy sharing in Mobile Social Networks
· Opportunistic Energy Sharing in Delay Tolerant Networks
· Energy sharing protocols and scheduling algorithms in Mobile Energy
Networks
· Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Mobile Energy Networks
· Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Mobile Energy Networks
· Incentive models for energy sharing by peers
· Energy trading and economy models among peers
· Aerial (UAV) Mobile Energy Networks
· Far-Field Wireless Power Transfer for Internet-of-Things (IoT)
Networks
· Crowd charging solutions in Mobile Social Networks
· Hybrid Mobile Energy Networks
· Software/Hardware solutions for energy sharing among peers
· Privacy and Security in Mobile Energy Networks
