Call for = Papers
Journal of = Pervasive and Mobile Computing
Special = Issue on
Pervasive = Healthcare
Pervasive = Healthcare is currently one of the hottest research topics
in the area of pervasive = and mobile computing focusing on the
integration and cooperation of two = fundamental disciplines
(Information and Communication Technologies and Medical = Sciences)
that have a great impact on the current society. One of the main
purposes of this research field consists in the design and development
of = information systems able to support medical professionals both
improving = patients' Quality of Life and reducing medical errors and
hospitalization costs. Continuous remote monitoring of patient's
physiological state and activity patterns, tracking of individual's
health-related = activities, smart management of medical records and
care professionals activities = are just some examples of system
features.
To allow = this, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary, both in
terms of cooperation = among ICT and medical experts to correctly
address patients and doctors = requirements with new technological
solutions, and inside the ICT community, to better = integrate
research efforts derived from different areas, from wearable and
ubiquitous technologies to context-awareness, sensor data fusion,
activity = recognition, Artificial Intelligence, expert systems,
databases and Human Computer Interaction. The proposed solutions must
also contend with the resource limitations associated with commercial
devices (e.g., energy = consumption), communication infrastructures,
and security and privacy issues related = to critical and highly
sensitive information.
In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting
original research results on topics that include, but are not limited
= to:
· Wearable and implantable sensors for healthcare
· Wireless communications in healthcare
· Activity and context recognition for healthcare applications
· Service and device discovery
· Data fusion and context elaboration
· Privacy and security issues in healthcare
· Middleware for e-Health
· Energy efficiency in health monitoring
· Artificial intelligence and expert systems
· Human computer interaction, usability and acceptability of
e-Health = systems
· Home monitoring and ambient assisted applications for
healthcare
· Power management and energy-efficient design in wireless
body area = networks
· System architecture and networking protocols for e-health
systems
· Medical data analysis, measurements and management
· Modeling and performance evaluation
· Standards and frameworks
A key criterion in the evaluation of papers will be the relevance of
the = work for healthcare applications with a preference for work that
includes = empirical evaluation in actual healthcare domains.
Submission process:
Authors should prepare and submit manuscripts according to the Guide
for Authors = as published in the Journal website at
http://www.ees.elsevier.com/pmc/. Please make sure to choose "SI:
Pervasive Healthcare" from = the pull-down menu during the submission
process. Manuscripts must not = have been previously published or
currently under consideration for = publication elsewhere. If a
similar version of the paper has been published in = a conference or
workshop, the submitted version should contain significant

If you have a cool demo of your ideas, come and showcase it in MobiCom
2011 this year in the student demo competition and win the best demo
awards! See instructions below.
Proposals for research demonstrations and exhibits are strongly
solicited. Demonstrations should be innovative research prototypes that
show new research related to the practice of mobile computing or
wireless and mobile networking.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Applications and services for mobile users
* Architectures, protocols, and algorithms to cope with mobility,
limited bandwidth, limited power and/or intermittent connectivity

prototypes validating their research results, and through the demo, make
it more accessible to the wider community. During MobiCom, demos will be
judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best
Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality,
execution, and illustration of the core research ideas.
Submission Instructions
Submit a summary of the proposed demo via email to xizhang(a)ece.tamu.edu.
The proposal should be maximum of 3 pages, including figures if needed,
and in PDF format only. Please indicate “MobiCom 2011 Demo Submission”

-------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS -----------------
Smart Communication Protocols and Algorithms (SCPA 2011)
December 5-9, 2011, Huston, Texas (USA)
In conjunction with Globecom 2011
http://scpa.it.ubi.pt/
Selected papers will be invited to the Special Issue on Smart Protocols and Algorithms of the International Journal Network Protocols and Algorithms (ISSN 1943-3581)
Communication protocols and algorithms are needed to communicate network devices and exchange data between them. The appearance of new technologies usually comes with a protocol procedure and communication rules that allows data communication while taking profit of this new technology. Recent advances in hardware and communication mediums allow proposing new rules, conventions and data structures which could be used by network devices to communicate across the network. Moreover, devices with higher processing capacity let us include more complex algorithms that can be used by the network device to enhance the communication procedure.
Smart communication protocols and algorithms make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network management, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to communicate the network devices to transfer data between them. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of its actions. The algorithms can make use of the information gathered from the protocol in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with smart protocols and algorithms. Moreover, they could learn from the past and !
use this knowledge to improve futur
e decisions.
In this workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit papers focused on the design, development, analysis or optimization of smart communication protocols or algorithms at any communication layer. Algorithms and protocols based on artificial intelligence techniques for network management, network monitoring, quality of service enhancement, performance optimization and network secure are included in the workshop.
We welcome technical papers presenting analytical research, simulations, practical results, position papers addressing the pros and cons of specific proposals, and papers addressing the key problems and solutions. The topics suggested by the conference can be discussed in term of concepts, state of the art, standards, deployments, implementations, running experiments and applications.
