CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
Trading Rate for Delay at the Transport and Application Layers
Remote control, media streaming, and interactive multimedia applications are
becoming increasingly prevalent uses of the Internet and cellular networks.
Because these applications require high rate and low latency, they are not
well
matched to best effort statistically multiplexed network architectures. In
order to efficiently and reliably deliver such low latency high rate
services,
it is necessary to understand the fundamental and practical tradeoffs
between
rate and delay for network communication.
This special issue solicits original research utilizing a broad spectrum of
technical approaches to manage rate and delay at the application and
transport
layers, including i) information theoretic limits, ii) the design of source
and
network coding schemes, iii) queueing theoretic models and network control,
and
iv) protocol design, implementation, and performance evaluation.
Information
theoretic approaches may involve error exponent and/or unequal erasure
protection schemes as well as new theoretical analyses of multiresolution
and
multiple description source coding. Coding approaches to the problem
include
the use of fountain codes, practical multiple description source code
design,
delay aware network coding, and hybrid network coding ARQ schemes. Network
control approaches may incorporate the queueing theoretic and/or network
utility
maximization paradigms. Solutions that focus on architectural (e.g.,
DiffServ
and IntServ) and protocol (e.g., RTMP) design as well as practical
deployment
issues are also encouraged.
Approaches which focus on the relationship between rate and delay over a
single
link are explicitly excluded from the scope, as the issue will focus on end
to
end multi-link and overlay approaches.
Relevant tools and techniques include:
*Network coding
*Overlay networks
*Queueing based performance analysis
*Controlled queues
*Fountain codes
*Multi-resolution and multiple description source codes
*Error exponents
*Network utility maximization
*Multiclass architectures (e.g., DiffServ, IntServ)
*Multimedia protocol solutions (e.g., RTMP)
*Streaming and live streaming multimedia/data
*Multicast
*P2P streaming and live streaming
*TCP-friendly approaches
All submissions should be prepared in a manner consistent with the JSAC
guidelines available at www.jsac.ucsd.edu/guidelines/info.html, and should
be
submitted via email to rdTradeSpecIss(a)gmail.com.
Submission deadline: July 1, 2010
Acceptance notification: November 1, 2010
Final manuscript due to COMSOC: January 1, 2011

ACM HotNets-IX
October 20-21, 2010
Monterey, CA
http://conferences.sigcomm.org/hotnets/2010/
Call for Papers
The Ninth ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets-IX) will
bring together people with interest in computer networks to engage in
a lively debate on the theory and practice of networking. Continuing
the HotNets tradition, the workshop will provide a venue for
presenting and discussing innovative ideas that have the potential to
significantly influence the community. The goal is to promote
community-wide discussion of those ideas.
We invite researchers and practitioners to submit short position
papers describing such ideas. A paper could, for example, expose a new
problem, advocate a new approach, re-frame or debunk existing work,
report unexpected results from a deployment, or propose new evaluation
methodologies. We especially encourage submissions of early-stage work
and enticing but unproven ideas. Once fully developed and evaluated,
the work may be relevant to conferences such as SIGCOMM, SOSP, SenSys,
NSDI, MobiCom, PODC, or Infocom.
HotNets takes a broad view of networking research. This view includes
new ideas relating to (but not limited to) home and enterprise
networks, ISP networks, sensor and personal area networks, wireless
and acoustic networks, data center networks, peer-to-peer networks,
network architecture, and disruption-tolerant networks. It encompasses
all aspects of such networks, including (but not limited to) resource
management, economics and evolution, robustness and security,
mobility, interactions with applications, energy, measurement and
diagnosis, and hardware.
Position papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of
spawning insightful discussion at the workshop, and technical
merit. Accepted papers will be posted online prior to the workshop and
a workshop summary will be published in ACM SIGCOMM's Computer
Communication Review (CCR), widely disseminating the ideas discussed
at the workshop.
Workshop Participation
HotNets is an invitation-only workshop. To ensure an interactive
atmosphere, attendance will be limited to around 60
people. Invitations will be extended per the following priorities:
* one author per accepted paper, any speakers invited by the
Program Committee, and the Program and Steering Committees,
* co-authors of accepted and submitted papers, preferring students
as available travel support allows, and
* event-sponsor representatives and additional authors of
submitted papers at the discretion of the Program Committee.
Submission Instructions
Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages (10 point font, 1 inch
margins). All submissions must be blind: submissions must not indicate
the names or affiliations of the authors in the paper. Only electronic
submissions in PDF will be accepted. Submissions must be written in
English, render without error using standard tools (e.g., Acrobat
Reader), and print on US-Letter sized paper. Papers must contain novel
ideas and must differ significantly in content from previously
published papers and papers under simultaneous submission.

“Control and Optimization over Wireless Networks”
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jnca
Scope:
Wireless networks, including Wireless LAN, PAN, cellular network, wireless
sensor network, and
ad-hoc and mesh networks etc, are a rapidly emerging technology providing
users with network
connectivity without being tethered off of a wired network. Ideally,
wireless users want to
have the same services and capabilities that they have commonly come to
expect with wired
networks. However, to meet these objectives, the wireless community faces
certain challenges
and need an excellent understanding of all aspects of wireless networks.
Wireless networks are
large complex entities. This complexity brings to the many problems, such as
network planning,
resource management, Quality of Service scheduling, congestion and flow
control, connection
admission control, and Medium Access Control. These problems are outside the
traditional
communications background. They can be properly addressed with methodologies
such as
optimization, estimation, adaptation, fuzzy control, games control, robust
stability,
distributed control, hybrid control. For instance, recently, there has been
a surge in
research activities that utilize optimization techniques to analysis and
design wireless
networks. The purpose of this special issue is to bring research papers
addressing the theme
of control and optimization for wireless networks. Subject areas of interest
include, but not
limited to, the following:
-Applications of control theory to wireless network problems
-Admission control, power control, and congestion control of wireless
networks
-Control system design base on wireless networks
-Network utility maximization for wireless networks
-Allocation of wireless network resources such as bandwidth, rate, or power
-Optimization-based models of network traffic and topology
-Digital communications signal processing algorithms via optimization
methods
-Cross-layer design through nonlinear optimization decomposition
-Modeling and performance evaluations for wireless networks
Submission Format:
The submitted papers must be written in English and describe original
research which is not
published nor currently under review by other journals or conferences.

*CALL FOR PAPERS
WiNTECH 2010
The Fifth ACM International Workshop on Wireless Network Testbeds,
Experimental evaluation and Characterization
In conjunction with MobiCom 2010
Chicago, Illinois, USA
Monday, September 20th, 2010*
*http://nitlab.inf.uth.gr/WINTECH2010/*
In recent years, some wireless technologies (e.g., WiFi, sensor
networks) have matured to the point of finding wide acceptance in the
real-world and leading to many new and interesting applications. At the
same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic
spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance
limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more
ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such diverse set of technologies
and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the
key performance bottlenecks, thus shaping future advances in wireless
technology. The importance of testbed-based evaluation of wireless
network protocols/applications as well as characterization of real world
aspects using traces from operational networks is gaining wider
recognition in the mobile and wireless networking research community.
This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad
area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a
forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects
of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key
unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously
unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues.
All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to
the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical
Program Committee.
Apart from regular paper presentations, the workshop program will
include an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome
demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and
measurement results. The posters may describe work in progress and
offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on
early research.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
· Design and evaluation of wireless testbeds, prototypes and platforms
· Experiences/lessons from recent testbed deployments
· Hybrid experimentation approaches combining use of multiple
evaluation methodologies
· Integration of diverse and distributed testbed infrastructures
· Testbed management issues and monitoring support
· Wireless testbed case studies
