With the penetration of Internet of things (IoT) devices in smart city applications, smart computing has become all the more relevant in terms of managing and processing the data. The applications in smart cities can be computing-intensive, network-intensive, disk-intensive, data-intensive etc. which requires different solution sets in order to effectively solve the issues pertaining to these applications. The computing and communication aspects in smart computing are of great relevance in the wider domain of smart cities which consists of smart metering, smart homes, smart building, smart industries, connected vehicles, and tackles various problems ranging from data reporting to providing smart services. Hence, the aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working in the broad area of smart cities using smart computing. The focus of the workshop will be on theoretical and experimental components of communication, networking and system-oriented techniques that tackle challenges in smart cities using smart computing. Therefore, in this workshop, the researchers working on emerging problems in different sectors of the smart cities can share their latest results, gather new problems from communication, networking and data analytics perspectives. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the 24th International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (IEEE WoWMoM) - Core Rank A - during 12 - 15 June, 2023 in Boston, USA. Starting in 2023, the event is broadening its scope beyond sensor networks to include smart systems in general and the Internet of Things (IoT). The updated name is “Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things” (DCOSS-IoT). In the last few years, we have witnessed significant growth in the use of IoT and distributed sensor systems in several application areas, including smart transportation, smart energy systems, smart homes and buildings, smart healthcare, and environmental monitoring. For smart sensor systems to truly become useful and pervasive, we need to address several research challenges, including the tight integration of sensing and machine intelligence, reliable and efficient networking, interoperability and scalability, the need for dependable autonomy, interaction with humans, and important aspects of security, privacy and trust. The vehicles themselves can be targets for various types of cyber attacks, which can lead to theft, physical harm or manipulation of many critical functions that they provide. Additionally, the connected nature of CAVs means that data collected from the vehicles can be vulnerable to breaches, as well as data sharing with other entities such as manufacturers, service providers and governments. In terms of privacy, CAVs collect and store vast amounts of personal information such as driving patterns, location data and vehicle usage information. This information is sensitive and valuable, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it can be used for malicious purposes such as identity theft, targeted advertising or even physical harm. Additionally, privacy concerns are also raised with the sharing of data between CAVs and other entities, as well as the potential use of CAVs for government surveillance. Furthermore, with rapid adoption of emerging technologies in CAVs, including but not limited to advanced sensing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, blockchain, etc., CAV network becomes more open, meanwhile also more vulnerable to new security, trust and privacy challenges. To address these challenges, it is important to develop better security, trust and privacy approaches for CAVs, so as to secure CAVs and protect user data. In this workshop, we aim at attracting innovative research ideas from both academia and industry, and fostering discussions that could help better shape the future directions of security and privacy for CAVs.
