The 10th International Workshop on Computer and Networking Experimental
Research using Testbeds (CNERT) - an INFOCOM 2023 Workshop
(INFOCOM 2023 will run as a hybrid conference, but all its workshops will
be virtual)
Experimentation has played an important role in advancing research in
computing and networking. Although theory and simulation are important
tools for studying and analyzing the behavior of new protocols and
algorithms, it is essential that new research ideas be validated on real
systems, testbeds, and infrastructure that provides a platform for
exploring new systems.
This workshop brings together researchers and technical experts to share
experiences and advance the state-of-the-art in experimental research in
areas such as networking, distributed systems, and cloud computing. It aims
to inspire researchers to use testbeds in novel and interesting ways as a
means to validate research ideas. Of particular interest are experiments on
publicly available testbeds such as the CENI, Chameleon, CloudLab,
DeterLab, Emulab, FABRIC, the Fed4FIRE+ and SLICES testbeds, FIT, OneLab,
ORBIT, the PAWR project testbeds (AERPAW, ARA, COSMOS, POWDER-RENEW), among
many others worldwide.
Paper Submissions: For CNERT 2023 we solicit:
● 6-page research papers. All research papers are encouraged to participate
in the demo session. One additional page is permitted in the initial
submission to provide a demo proposal associated with the paper (detailed
below). ● 2-page extended abstracts, plus a 1-page demo proposal (detailed
below).
We solicit papers and demo proposals with experimental results from
testbeds from areas including, but not limited to: ● Wireless network
experimentation (including low-power wireless, Internet-of-Things and
sensor networks, aerial drone networks, 5G, mmWave, RFID and backscattering
networks)
● Wired network experimentation (including optical networks)
● Distributed systems
● Cloud computing and big data
● Edge computing
● Computer and network security
● Virtualization of radios and networks with advanced orchestration and
management software
● Software defined networking (SDN)
● Future internet architectures (FIA)
● Next generation internet (NGI)
● Network economics and pricing
● Financial networks and algorithmic trading
● All state-of-the-art application topics are welcome with special emphasis
on the above topics in networking and computing
Experiments may focus on challenges including, but not limited to: ●
Instrumentation and measurement
● Large-scale experiments
● Evaluation and analysis of experimental data
● Creation and sharing of datasets of broad interest to the community
● Experiment design and deployment
● Designs for repeatability and reproducibility
● Tools and services for testbed users and operators
● Experiments on federated testbeds
● Testbed implementation and deployment
Demo Proposals: The CNERT workshop has a strong experimental component.
For consideration in the demo session, authors should provide additional
information in a 1-page appendix:
● A summary describing the demonstration.
● The data sets used (if any) and expected results.
● The testbed used for the demo.
Reproducibility: To foster reproducibility in the area of computer and
networking research, authors can provide, in a 1-page appendix, clearly
defined artifacts not previously available, including traces, original
data, source code, or tools developed as part of the submitted work. We
strongly recommend participation in this aspect of the workshop. However,
this is not a requirement to publish the work.
The CNERT 2023 Reproducibility Committee is responsible to award accepted
papers badges, based on the ACM Artifact Review and Badging system. For
papers to be eligible for badging, the authors (1) must opt-in to badging
before the paper submission deadline, and (2) include a 1-page appendix in
the submission that clearly describes the artifacts and provide pointers to
the code and other artifacts.
Best Paper and Best Demo Awards, and Badges:
In addition to a best paper and best demo award, if applicable, CNERT will
present badges to papers that exemplify the principles of experiment
repeatability and reproducibility on real systems with running code.
Deadlines:
Submission deadline: Tuesday, January 9, 2023
Notification: Monday, February 6, 2023
Camera ready: Monday, March 6, 2023

Securely and privately managing sensitive user data is of tremendous
importance in fostering and encouraging the development of new types of
pervasive applications and services that are currently unthinkable.
However, collected data can be analyzed to reveal sensitive information
that users would be unwilling to share if they were aware of the
consequences. It is thus critical to design innovative privacy-preserving
applications and techniques that are able to operate while preserving the
confidentiality of sensitive information. The design and widespread
adoption of novel privacy-preserving data analysis techniques would also
have significant socio-economic implications, since it would allow users'
sensitive data to be handled explicitly and remain secret throughout all
processing phases, instead of sidestepping the privacy issue altogether by
collecting as little information as possible.
The First Workshop on Privacy Preserving Computation in Pervasive Computing
(PrivaCom 2023) will provide a forum to discuss, exchange insights and
share experiences among researchers, industry specialists and application
developers.
Authors are kindly invited to submit original research on both theoretical
and practical aspects of privacy-preserving computation for pervasive
computing. We especially welcome submissions that present implementation
and deployment results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Privacy-preserving systems and applications
- Privacy sensing and sharing
- Privacy-preserving data aggregation
- Cloud, social media and mobile privacy
- Privacy-aware Big Data analytics
- AI and machine learning for privacy preserving computation
- Privacy mobile crowdsensing
- Human factors in privacy computing
- Secure multi-party computation
- Cryptography for privacy protection of pervasive systems
- Differential privacy
- Functional encryption and privacy-preserving analytics

Digital Twins (DTs) are a new approach to testing and assurance for mobile
networks by providing an emulated software replica of the mobile network
that enables continuous prototyping, testing, and optimization. Due to the
scale and complexity of mobile networks, as well as the high impact of
their downtime and failures, DT for Mobile Networks (DTMN) can add
significant value to the development and operational phases of mobile
networks. They can help mobile network providers predict and assess network
incidents, perform testing, provide network updates, etc. DTs can also
facilitate the implementation of more powerful features and services,
including the embedding of artificial intelligence (AI) in mobile networks.
DTs can be used to develop AI algorithms when real networks cannot provide
enough real data or when it is unsafe to apply AI algorithms to real
networks. In addition, with the ongoing developments of 5G and 6G, mobile
networks will be denser, will need to react quickly, and small changes in
the network can have a cascading effect in a short period of time.
Effective DT implementation can contribute to the success of mobile
networks in 6G or even beyond, giving mobile network operators the
opportunity to simulate different scenarios, test solutions, facilitate
network analysis and find optimal mobile network operations.
While DTs can bring significant benefits to mobile networks, there are
still issues and challenges to be addressed, including data collection and
storage, data modeling, network visualization, interface standardization,
as well as addressing security and forensics, energy efficiency planning,
and hardware. In this timely Special Issue, we aim to bring together
contributions that focus on DTs for addressing the above-mentioned
challenges. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:
* New paradigm for DTMNs
* Architecture and standard for DTMNs
* DTMN application areas, including manufacturing, healthcare, smart
cities, finance, and education
* Robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles in DTs for mobile networks
* AI, sensors, clouds, and edge computing enabled DTMN
* Intelligent DTs-based software-defined vehicular networks
* DTs for fault detection in Terrestrial Networks/ Non-Terrestrial
Networks
* DTMNs for cloud-based frameworks in e-health systems
* Standardized interfaces and protocol for DTMNs
* Federated learning in DTMNs
* Edge intelligence as a service for real-time control in DTMNs
* Data security and traceability supported by distributed ledgers for
DTMNs
* DT-based efficient resource allocation in 5G/6G
* Digital twins for system of systems
* Cognitive aspects of DTMN
* Societal and ethical aspects of DTMN
* Visualization and mobility management in DTMNs.

code, data sets, and tools, are highly encouraged to be submitted or made
available simultaneously with paper submission.
IPSN 2023 accepts double-blind paper submissions which have not been
previously published. Posted technical reports (ArXiv or similar) do not
count as prior publication and do not violate the double-blind requirement.
Submitted manuscripts are up to 12 single-spaced 8.5" x 11" pages with 9-pt
font size in two-column format, inclusive of figures, tables, and
references, following the ACM primary article template
<https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template>. LaTeX submissions
should use the acmart.cls template (sigconf option), with the default 9-pt
font. Papers are to be submitted at https://ipsn2023.hotcrp.com/
<https://ipsn2023.hotcrp.com/>. During the review process, the reviewers
may anonymously communicate with the authors for clarifying questions.
Selected outstanding papers (up to 10) may be fast-tracked as a special
section of ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks.
IPSN collaborates closely with the IoTDI conference
<https://conferences.computer.org/iotDI/2023/>, given the proximity in
research themes (both related to IoT) and the co-location in CPS-IoT Week.
We provide submission guidelines
<https://ipsn.acm.org/joint_statement_IoTDI.html> to aid prospective
authors with the conference venue selection. In the meantime, we would like
to make explicit that double submission remains prohibited under ACM's
policy of Prior Publication and Simultaneous Submissions
<https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/simultaneous-submissions>. To
foster a closer joint community, following the practice in recent years, we
would invite quality submissions to switch between IoTDI and IPSN, in case
we find fit and the authors agree.
