Focus: PIMRC 2008 will provide a global forum for presenting the most recent advances, the future technical challenges and business opportunities that comprise the contemporary landscape in wireless communications. The organizers endeavour to attract contributions covering not only conventional areas of wireless communications (e.g., physical layer), but also emerging areas with high potential for essential scientific and societal impact such as wireless sensors for biomedical applications, non-trivial pervasive computing services and ambient technologies. The latter areas are expected to facilitate the development of a broad vision of innovative future applications in wireless communications. It has currently expanded to wireless multihop networks, which include ad hoc radio networks, sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay systems. With multihop capability, wireless communication can be combined with cooperative communications and network coding, which has attracted even more researchers to this field. In many wireless multihop networks, the merits of capacity enhancement as well as coverage exceed the delay caused by multihop relay. Still, however, there are unresolved issues that may not be necessarily technical; one question regards the real motivation of a relay node that allows packet relay for the other transmitting nodes by consuming its own energy. There is also a security issue in multihop communications, in the sense that one's own data transmission is received by someone else in close proximity. On the other hand, in the networked robotics area, researchers try to realize group behaviors found in small insects or animals, in order to control and coordinate a team of robots. Especially, real-time wireless communication can help dynamic resource management and self-organization for a team of cooperative robots. The multiple robots communicate with each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. This special issue is an attempt to bridge these two dynamic areas. We welcome submissions on all aspects of these themes, which include (but are not limited to) the following topics: - Communication architecture for collaborative robot systems - Biologically inspired swarm robotics with networking functionality - Multiple robot networking with mutihop- and cooperative communications - Network coding and wireless relay technologies for cooperative robotics - Applications of multi-robot network systems - Ad hoc robot networks - Cognitive communication technologies for inter-robot team work - Exploiting robot mobility in wireless relay networks - QoS support and resource management in networked robotics - Wireless networks under node mobility Manuscript Submission With regard to both the content and formatting style of the submissions, prospective contributors must follow the IEEE Wireless Communications guidelines at http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/sub_guidelines.html. (Please accept our apology if you receive multiple copies of this CFP) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS 2nd IEEE Workshop on Autonomic Communications and Network Management (ACNM 2008) April 11, 2008 - Salvador, Brazil http://www.netlab.nec.de/acnm08/ In conjunction with the IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (NOMS 2008) The purpose of this workshop is to present and to discuss new theories, mechanisms and applications of Autonomic Communication - a new paradigm for forthcoming networks in the fixed as well as the mobile world. The focus of ACNM is on intelligent communication, network control and management paradigms based on smart network and service elements that are capable to automatically configure and organize themselves. Autonomic networks will be able to sense their environment to perceive these changes, to understand the meaning of these changes, and to react in an intelligent manner through adaptation. This facilitates new ways to perform network control, management, service creation, etc. Autonomic networking naturally also applies to mission critical distributed systems, since autonomic behavior allows for immediate reaction to changes in the networking environment or context, and correction of any (predicted) problems. Such behavior also facilitates fault-tolerance and resilience. ACNM offers a unique opportunity for researchers in this area to exchange their research ideas and findings. The workshop will be held in conjunction with NOMS'08, which draws many leading researchers in the field of Network and Systems Management. In particular, we now face the possibility to spontaneously establish wireless self- organizing networks, such as ad hoc, disruption-tolerant, sensor, and wireless mesh networks. These spontaneous self-organizing networks have been the focus of intensive research activity in recent years. Spontaneous networks arise from the cooperation of mobile devices in an ad hoc fashion requiring no previous infrastructure in place. A key point to couple research and real-life applications in this context is to understand how mobility (of devices, users, and applications) impacts practical networking aspects. The knowledge accumulated so far in the area of wireless self-organizing networks is in general supported by either simulation or theoretical analysis relying on strong assumptions. The research community needs a step forward and should definitely consider real aspects of mobility in their protocols and algorithms. Such a situation is to be compared with the one found for infrastructure-based networks (e.g., cellular networks), in which mobility has been thoroughly investigated (both theoretically and through measurements) and properly incorporated in their management architecture. In wireless self-organizing networks, contrary to common belief, much is still to be done in this domain, and definitive solutions are still to emerge. Mobility can no longer be seen as an issue to be hidden from higher layers of the protocol stack, but as an expected characteristic of today's communication systems. In this context, it is of utmost importance to address issues related to the impact of mobility as seen in practice, covering characterization, modeling, and applications of mobility in modern wireless networks. The research community working on wireless self-organizing networks has recently started giving more attention to the practical mobility issues in this area. This may be attested by the increasing number of initiatives worldwide like the many measurement campaigns and the considerable body of developed theoretical background work supported by practical arguments (e.g., mobility models, mobility increasing network capacity, relationship between node mobility and wireless channel conditions). The goal of this special issue is to help filling this gap by presenting contributions ranging from the impact of mobility on self-organizing networks to mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. As we intend to focus on the practical impacts of mobility in wireless self-organizing networks, papers presenting insights from the applicability of mobility measurements and realistic mobility models in this context are also expected. We will be particularly interested in contributions that explore mobility to improve the behavior of network protocols and algorithms. We are soliciting papers covering, but not limited to, the following topics: * Mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. * Impact of mobility on self-organizing networks. * Practical applicability of wireless testbeds and mobility measurements. * Realistic mobility models for self-organizing networks. * Mobility-centric killer applications. This trend has forced the network and service providers to understand the limitations of current Internet and bring new technologies for delivering the video content to the end-user. Furthermore, criticality of the wireless networks pose new challenges in video delivery specific to the diverse set of underlying network technologies including Wi-Fi, WiMax etc. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the wireless network technologies and video delivery mechanisms for supporting the broad spectrum of emerging video-centric applications. The workshop will have the goal of understanding the research and deployment challenges in building the Next Generation Mobile Video Internet. Specifically, the workshop intends to address the following topics: a) Research challenges in developing new methods for delivering rich video experience to users over existing wireless technologies; b) New visions and concepts that will drive evolution of wireless access technologies to support high definition video content with diverse QoS requirements; c) Deployment challenges in new video delivery models (broadcast/multicast) to mobile users.
