Call for Papers - 19. GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch "Drahtlose Sensornetze" -
FGSN 2022*

*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Special Issue on High-Precision, Predictable and Low-Latency Networking
https://www.springer.com/journal/10922/updates/19942016 (call closes 31 May
2022)
New waves of networked applications continue to push the limits of what is
possible with networks today. For example, Industrial Internet
applications, Augmented Reality, Tactile Internet require ultra-low latency
measured in single-digit milliseconds and do not tolerate jitter at all.
Economic pressures mandate increasingly cloudification of real-time
applications with precision service level needs. Many of those applications
are mission-critical and cannot afford any loss in connectivity or even
single packets. Collectively, these applications require networking
services that support high-precision and predictable service levels with
associated guarantees that border on determinism. This requires a
rethinking of many of the principles underlying existing "Best Effort"
internetworking technology.
Various approaches are emerging that try to tackle those challenges. Data
centers with fixed topologies and a constant number of hops rapidly replace
conventional routing and more general Internet topologies. Networks are
becoming more programmable to allow to custom-tailor and optimize treatment
of packets and flows. Related technologies range from Service Function
Chaining to Network Slicing to SDN. While 5G is making URLLC at the network
edge a reality, momentum for Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G is building to push the
boundaries of precision services beyond the edge and across the core. One
overarching question concerns how these technologies can be harnessed and
what additional approaches are needed to be able to actually deliver on
high-precision networking with service levels that are predictable and that
can be guaranteed. This will involve advances across all networking planes,
including but not limited to approaches for the programming and processing
of packets in the data plane, evolved control interfaces and ultra-low
latency control loops to optimize service levels in the control-plane,
methods for high-precision measurements and telemetry with nanosecond
accuracy at scale, as well as advances in the related platforms and
algorithms in the management plane.
This special issue focuses on challenges and solution approaches to
deliver, manage, control, monitor, and measure high-precision network
services that provide applications with predictable service levels that can
be guaranteed. This includes (Ultra) Low-Latency networks, deterministic
networks, 6G, etc. The special issue specifically encourages submission of
papers that describe disruptive concepts, innovative solutions, testbeds,
experiments, in addition to more evolutionary approaches.
Topics of Interest include but are not limited to the following:
• Platforms and solutions to manage and operate high-precision networks and
services, e.g., Industrial Networks, Tactile Networks, Augmented Reality
(AR), and cloud gaming
• Proof and validation of high-precision service level guarantees
• High-precision measurement techniques for ultra-low latency and jitter
• Service level assurance for micro services and service function chains
• Applications for and advances in Inband Network Telemetry and iOAM
• In-network service level tuning and optimization; predictable QoS
• Novel network programming models
• Applications of Artificial Intelligence for high-precision networking
• Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), Deterministic Networking (DetNet),
Network Protocol Evolution for IT/OT convergence
• SDN applications for high-precision, high-performance networking
• High-precision cloud networking services using Fog and Edge Computing
• Deployment and operational experiences with Industrial Internet, Tactile
Internet, networked AR, cloud gaming
• 5G/B5G approaches
• Testbeds and platforms for High-Precision (OAI, MAGMA, OpenNetVM, etc.)
• Network optimization and hardware considerations for fast processing and
delivery (DPDK, etc.)

*** Featured Topic: Unconventional Communication ***
Embedded wireless systems undergo continuous evolution, which requires a
scientific discourse of relevant trends, such as the emerging topic of
embedded systems for 6G. 'Unconventional Communication' triggers questions
for new PHY layers from visual light communication to molecular or
microfluidic sensor communication systems for the Internet of Nano- or
BioNanoThings. In addition, it challenges higher layers of communications,
including embedded systems that incorporate embedded AI for autonomy,
safety, resilience, fault- and exception-managing, and being
self-reflective, i.e., networked things that act and react in real-time.
Moreover, 'unconventional' means also to discuss inspiring methods from
information theory and complex systems and the far-reaching question of how
embedded wireless systems affect compliance with the UN SDGs (Sustainable
Development Goals). The impact on climate change, cheap technology for
developing societies, beneficial to health and overall development can be
supported by responsible and inclusive embedded wireless systems to embrace
all people irrespective of race, gender, disability, medical or other need.
It is about giving equal access and opportunities and getting rid of
discrimination and removal of barriers with different disabilities.

*Manuscript submission information:*
A primary aim of wireless ad-hoc networks is to deliver data in areas where
there is no pre-defined infrastructure. In these networks, the users, but
also the network entities can be potentially mobile. Wireless ad-hoc
networks have recently witnessed their fastest growth period ever in
history. Real wireless ad-hoc networks are now implemented, deployed and
tested, and this trend is likely to increase in the future. However, as
such networks are increasingly complex, performance modeling and evaluation
play a crucial part in their design process to ensure their successful
deployment and exploitation in practice.
This special issue on Modeling, Analysis and Performance evaluation of
Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks era aims to open a new critical debate on the
evaluation of wireless ad-hoc networks. In particular, we seek original
theoretical and/or practical contributions, from researchers and
practitioners that identify and address issues in evaluating wireless
ad-hoc networks.

Sustainable environmental sensing systems, as the converging point of
several technologies, can have tremendous potential to deliver social
value. Multiple industries are progressively investing in environmental
sustainability initiatives and technologies to improve quality of life
while safeguarding natural resources. For example, the Internet of Things
could be a game-changer for sustainability, as reported by the World
Economic Forum, which indicated that 84% of IoT deployments are currently
addressing, or have the potential to handle, some of the 17 SDGs. Different
challenges need to be addressed, from designing "better" sensing objects,
i.e., energy-efficient, low power, and able to communicate via wide-area
networks, to turning to the general public for deploying such systems and
crowdsourcing data using social sensing or citizen science. With the
"Networked sensing systems for a sustainable society" (NET4us) workshop, we
aim to present and showcase the latest advances in sustainable networked
sensing systems to monitor different urban and rural conditions to improve
both people's quality of life and reduce climate change. Therefore, we seek
original, unpublished papers addressing key issues and challenges in this
growing area. TOPICS * Analysis, simulation, testbed, and measurement
campaigns * Converged communication, computing, and storage technologies *

Call for Papers -- ACM CoNEXT 2022
ACM CoNEXT 2022 seeks papers presenting significant and novel research
results on emerging computer networks and its applications. We especially
encourage submissions that present novel experimentation, creative use of
networking technologies, and new insights made possible using analysis.
We invite submissions on a wide range of networking topics. The list of
topics includes:
Content distribution and caching, e.g., CDN, peer-to-peer, overlays
Design, analysis, and evaluation of network architectures
Energy-efficient computing and networking
Experience and lessons learned by deploying large-scale networked systems
In-network computing, NFV and network programmability
Innovative uses of network data beyond communication
Internet measurement and modeling
Internet economics and policy
Mobile and wireless network protocols and applications
Machine learning as applied to all layers of networking
Networked applications including web, video, and online social networks
Network aspects of datacenters, cloud computing, operating systems,
virtualization
Network aspects of IoT
Network control and management, including SDN
Network, transport, and application-layer protocols
Reliability and availability of networks, protocols, and applications
Reproducibility
Routing and traffic engineering
Security and privacy aspects of network applications and protocols
We are open to other contributions that stretch networking research outside
of these topics, present new emerging computing trends, or potentially
involve unfamiliar techniques. We ask authors to bear in mind that the main
factor of interest in their work will be the implications of their results
in networking. As such CoNEXT is, e.g., not looking for papers addressing
only the physical layer. Potential authors who are unsure of the scope are
encouraged to contact the PC chairs before submission.
Submission and Review Process
Please refer to https://conferences2.sigcomm.org/co-next/2022/#!/cfp for
detailed instructions.
Research Reproducibility
We value submissions that are accompanied by clearly defined artifacts not
previously available, including traces, original data, source code, or
tools developed as part of the submitted work. CoNEXT 2022 reproducibility
committee is responsible to award accepted papers ACM reproducibility
badges (for details visit:
https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/artifact-review-badging). For
accepted papers to be eligible for ACM badging, the authors (1) must opt-in
for ACM badging before the paper submission deadline, and (2) send one page
to the reproducibility committee that clearly describes the artifacts and
provide pointers to the code and other artifacts, within a week after the
notification of acceptance. Artifact pointers and description must be
included at camera ready.
Ethical concerns
CoNEXT accords great importance to research ethics. Specifically, authors
must attest that their work complies with all applicable ethical standards
of their home institution(s), including, but not limited to privacy
policies and policies on experiments involving humans. Submitting research
for approval by one’s institution’s ethics review body is necessary, but
not sufficient. The PC will have its own discussion of the ethics of that
work whenever it has concerns about the ethics of a submission. Authors
agree to be available at any time during the review process to rapidly
respond to queries from the PC chairs regarding ethical standards.
Important Dates
Paper registration week: June 23-29
