By allowing peers serving each other in the network, p2p technology overcomes many limitations in traditional client-server paradigm to achieve user and bandwidth scalabilities. It has been shown that performance of a properly-designed p2p network actually improves, rather than deteriorates, with the increase of population size. Peer-to-Peer technology is promising for large content distribution as demonstrated by a number of proof-of-concept prototypes in both academia and companies. In a p2p multimedia streaming system, multimedia contents are delivered to a large pool of distributed users with low delay, high quality and high robustness. Fueled by advances in networking and compression technologies, p2p multimedia streaming has experienced much initial deployment success for applications such as Internet TV (IPTV), video conferencing, and surveillance. It is the key to address the emerging needs of large-scale digital IPTV, interactive videos, interactive games and other next-generation broadcast-based or personalized multimedia services. A scalable peer-to-peer multimedia system should support many hosts, possibly in excess of hundreds or even millions, with diverse heterogeneity in bandwidth, capability, storage, network, and mobility. It should also be able to support various applications under dynamic user arrival and departure, frequent host failures and unavailability, and unpredictable user behaviors, network traffic and congestion. In a p2p streaming networks, users should be able to share, search, and access contents in a distributed and efficient manner. To achieve these goals, it is particularly important to address the challenges in architecture design, network/transport support, resource discovery and content delivery mechanisms. Scope of Contributions ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This feature issue is devoted to original surveys and tutorials on these emerging issues in P2P streaming. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished original articles that are not under review in any other conference or journal. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the research community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. System support platforms can significantly affect the widespread and rapid adoption of novel mobile devices, because they influence both functional and non-functional characteristics of the forthcoming mobile applications. In fact, novel support for future mobile computing applications should be capable of reconciling the heterogeneity of low-level system features with application-specific requirements. In addition, it should be capable of managing the dynamic evolution of platforms and application requirements by accommodating novel system features and application requirements efficiently. This workshop aims to provide a forum for researchers and engineers in academia and industry to foster an exchange of research results and experiences in the area of mobile applications from a system support perspective. The ultimate goal is to envision new trends and ideas about theoretical and practical aspects of designing, implementing, and evaluating future system platforms for next-generation mobile computing applications. Submitted papers must be original work with no substantial overlap with papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or conference with proceedings. TOPICS OF INTEREST: Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: - System support infrastructures, services, middleware, and tools; - Supporting functional and non-functional requirements (dependability, resource consumption, portability across heterogeneous devices, hw/sw personalization, QoS); - Runtime and programming language abstractions; - Support for system-, context-, and location-awareness; - Multi-platform solutions and runtime platform interworking; - OS support and integration between runtime platforms and native OS; - Usability, user acceptance and social impact of system support on nomadic end-users, 3rd party developers, and/or device designers and manufactures; - Supporting novel HCI paradigms, programming models, and design methodologies; - Supporting novel user interfaces and novel display (e.g., omni directional 3D displays, power-aware displays) and audio-rendering devices SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Each submission should include either a short or a full position paper including names and contact information of the authors. - Full papers should be at most 8 pages in IEEE proceedings style (two-column, single space, using 10-point font and 1-inch margins) including all figures and references; - Short papers should be at most 5 pages in IEEE proceedings style. Submissions must be made electronically in non-editable PDF or Postscript format by sending an email to fumca2006(a)nokia.com by June 16, 2006. Submission implies the acceptance that at least one author will register to the main conference and present the paper if accepted. The selection process will involve peer reviews and reviews by program committee members. The papers will be selected for the workshop based upon their originality, technical soundness, and relevance to the field of system support for future mobile computing applications. Notification of acceptance will be sent to contact authors by July 24, 2006. Authors of accepted papers will be requested to provide the camera-ready version of the paper by August 8, 2006. All Accepted papers (both full and short papers) will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Best papers will be selected for post-workshop publication into a special issue of a highly respected scientific journal.
