*TITLE:* International Forum on ‘Less is more - Simple Computing in an
Age of Complexity’ - 27–28 April 2005
*DESCRIPTION:*
OVERVIEW:
Computers continue to become smaller, cheaper, more powerful, ubiquitous
and more diverse and yet for many computing is still associated with the
desktop device. As a consequence, the potential of computing to shape,
improve and change the social, cultural and creative fabric of society
is limited.
This Forum seeks to understand how computing will be able to affect the
way we all live, work, learn and play. By thinking about computing for
all rather than some, for the old as well as the young, for those in
remote locations as well as those centrally located, and by designing
for those with needs very different from those of our own, the Forum
hopes to help define how computing and computers could become a ‘natural
resource’ for any and all, wherever they and whatever they do. Achieving
this will require not just a shift in people’s perceptions, of course,
but radical changes in the design of computing which the Forum also
wants to define: from the WIMP interface to ‘applianceness’, from
mains-powered to wind-up, from the office to robotic, from graphical to
tangible.
CALL FOR PARTECIPATION:
We are inviting you to send in an abstract of your paper (maximum 1000
words) for presentation at the Forum. It is required that each accepted
paper be presented at the conference by one of its authors. Paper
abstracts and papers can be sent online via
https://msrcmt.research.microsoft.com/LessIsMore2005/. In case of
questions related to the submission of papers and paper abstracts,
please mail camlim(a)microsoft.com.
Informal proceedings consisting of the accepted paper abstracts will be
distributed at the conference.
Accepted paper abstracts will be invited after the conference for a full
paper to appear in the formal proceedings. These are planned to be
published as a volume in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer
Science series (subject to their approval). All such full papers will be
reviewed before being accepted for publication.

Call For Papers
----------------------------------------------------------------------
International workshop on Wireless Traffic Measurements and Modeling
WiTMeMo'05
in conjunction with the 3rd International Conference on Mobile Systems,
Applications, and Services (MobiSys'05)
June 5, 2005
Seattle, WA
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview
--------
The rapid deployment of wireless infrastructures in various environments
triggers new applications and services that in turn generate a richer set of
traces for analysis. There is a need for more realistic models of traffic,
mobility, and association patterns. This can be beneficial in capacity
planning, administration, and deployment of wireless infrastructures,
protocol design for wireless applications and services, and their
performance analysis.
The Wireless Traffic Measurements and Modeling workshop is intended to serve
as a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and industry to
exchangeand discuss their experiences and research results about all aspects
of measurements and modeling of applications, usage, access, load, and
mobility in wireless networks. It will also initiate discussions on how to
use these models to improve the performance of wireless networks.
Furthermore, it aims in enhancing and accelerating the process of sharing
traces, implementations, and test suites.
In this workshop, we would like to solicit short, 6 pages, papers that report
on experiences obtained from operational wireless experiments in testbeds or
the field. We will use the EDAS system for the paper submission. We plan to
get industrial sponsorship to support a best paper and award and a
keynotespeaker. Along with regular presentations we plan to have speakers
and/or panel discussions that encourage more active participation of the
attendees.
Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to:
* Methods for collecting and analyzing measurements in different
wireless environments (infrastructures, sensor networks)
* Workload characterization and traffic analysis
* User mobility modeling
* Measurements and predictions of user access over multiple networks
* Software tools in support of measurements
* Measurement-based inference of network properties (for normal or
abnormal behavior, network topology, hot spots)
* Design of monitoring systems, sampling methods, and anomaly detection
* Temporal and spatial evolution of wireless networks
* Evaluation of forecasting algorithms for wireless traffic load
* Comparative analysis on different wireless networks
* Techniques for improving the repeatability of tests

* CALL FOR PAPERS *
**********************************************************************
Scope of ConWiN 2005:
=====================
The advances in the wireless communication technologies have enabled
the realization of wide range of heterogeneous wireless networks from
wireless local area networks (WLANs), several generations (2G/3G) of
wireless cellular networks to mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and
wireless sensor networks (WSN). This technological evolution is
further inspiring researchers to envision the next generation wireless
networking architectures and even the space Internet.
Next Generation Wireless Internet (NGWI) will be the convergence of
these heterogeneous wireless networks and the next generation Internet
to provide mobile users with a wide range of high resource demanding
services such as high speed reliable data and real-time multimedia
delivery. While the unique characteristics of each of these wireless
networks pose diverse set of challenges, their integration severely
expands the set of open research problems for seamless, efficient, and
reliable communication. Therefore, there exists an urgent need for a
significant research effort to focus on solving these new challenges
posed by the integration and the convergence of these wireless
heterogeneous networks.
The objective of ConWiN 2005 is to provide a research platform where
researchers bring their contributions to light by presenting their
technical papers on the issues regarding the integration and the
convergence of heterogeneous wireless networks. Papers solicited in
ConWiN 2005 spans a wide range of areas of interest including but
not limited to:
- Physical layer issues for the convergence of heterogeneous wireless
communication technologies
- Novel and adaptive communication protocols at all layers, i.e.,
MAC layer problems, routing, reliable and multimedia transport, for
integration of diverse wireless systems such as WLANs, 3G, and WSNs
- Novel and practical communication architectures for the convergence
of heterogeneous wireless networks
- Efficient mobility/handoff management protocols for seamless roaming
within the converged communication architecture
- Killer applications/services for the convergence towards the NGWI
- Security, authentication, and billing solutions for the converged
architecture
