The fast growth of wireless communications and electronics has fueled up the
extensive research and system development on wireless sensor networks.
Sensor nodes consist of sensing, data processing, and communication
component, which are typically low-cost and low-power. Sensor networks pose
many new challenges, such as self-organization, energy conservation,
fault tolerance, efficient routing and information collection, and so on.
This journal special is dedicated to researchers and practitioners to present
the latest research results and experience in wireless sensor networks.
Topics of interest include, but not limited to:
* Self-organization and topology control
* Energy conservation in sensor networks
* Energy Efficient multicast / Broadcast
* Fault tolerance and self-healing
* Collaboration of sensor nodes
* Querying processing and data aggregation
* Applications of sensor networks

CALL FOR PAPERS - MSAN 2005
First International Conference on Multimedia Services Access Networks
Technically co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society
June 13-15, 2005, Orlando, Florida, USA
http://msan.org
** SCOPE **
Access networks (the ‘last-’ or ‘first-’ mile according to provider’s or
customer’s perspective) represent one of the most important parts in
telecommunication systems, being responsible for the high-quality,
reliable and secure delivery of services to end users. They also
encompass some of the most demanding networking problems, such as the
coexistence of a large variety of technologies based on both wired and
wireless solutions, the need of optimal integration with the core
network in terms of bandwidth and availability mismatch, the provision
of an acceptable quality of service in very different application
scenarios and traffic conditions. Perhaps, the most important challenge
is that the design of access networks – from the analysis of
requirements to the implementation and operation of the system – can
only be successful if it is based on an integrated approach, taking into
account the needs of different user groups, the technical constraints
posed by different application technologies, as well as the related
business and societal aspects.
Within this framework, MSAN’05 is intended to provide a unique
international forum to explore the new research frontiers in the field
of current and next generation multimedia service access networks.
Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the
knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient access
technologies and the relevant provision of advanced multimedia
applications.
** TOPICS OF INTEREST **
Topics of interest are organized in three tracks addressing
respectively: access network technologies (with particular emphasis on
network design methodologies, protocols, analysis of performance and
quality of service); multimedia service delivery (mainly focusing on the
integration/adaptation between multimedia data processing and
transmission techniques and access networks characteristics);
implementation, operation and performance (providing an opportunity to
present innovative applications and testbeds for the above technologies,
as well as new approaches to testing and performance evaluation). Topics
of interest include but are not limited to:
Track 1: Access technologies and networks in MSANs (technologies and

Location- and Context-Awareness (LoCA 2005)
in cooperation with Pervasive 2005

Submission Deadline: December 17th, 2004
LoCA 2005 - Call for Papers
---
The goal of this workshop is to address and discuss the technical
challenges, ideas, views, and research results in sensing, fusing
and distributing location information as well as providing location-
and context-awareness to applications and services such as navigation
in pervasive systems.
The workshop is a platform to propose new positioning algorithms and
location sensing techniques, including new techniques and studies
into the properties of existing technologies. This includes enhancements
of singular systems (e.g. positioning in cellular telephone networks
such as GSM; positioning in WLAN environments; etc.) as well as hybrid
systems (e.g. integration of Global Navigation Satellite Systems with
Inertial Positioning Systems). Improvements in sensor technology,
integration and sensor fusion may be addressed either on a theoretical
or on an implementation level.
The genesis of nearly all kinds of dynamic location information is
mobility. Mobility - in all its facets (user mobility, device mobility,
session mobility etc.) - requires advances in wireless network
technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting
cognitive environments, as well as discovery and execution frameworks
for location-aware services. Thus we invite you to submit proposals
and/or experience papers in the area of mobility and its mentioned
adjacencies.
Context-awareness, a generalization of location-awareness, is another
driver of the pervasive computing paradigm. Well designed context
modeling and context retrieval approaches are key accessors to the
context in any context-aware system. Thus we emphatically invite
submissions dealing with issues of modeling and retrieval of context.
This may also include integration aspects into service platforms and
frameworks to provide location- and context-awareness to services.
Personal and confidential data such as the location of the user stored
on mobile devices and the location of the mobile device itself have
profound implications for personal information privacy. Thus the area
of protecting privacy, privacy-oriented location-aware systems, and
how privacy affects the feasibility and usefulness of systems may be
addressed. Example topics include privacy enablers in pervasive
surveillance and sensing environments or location anonymity techniques.
Scenarios and applications for location-aware computing may be surveyed
and evaluated, including existing applications and aiming forwards
future applications, to facilitate the deployment and everyday use of
location-aware computing systems in workplaces, homes and public spaces.
The workshop particularly values practical experience with design,
deployment and use of location- and context-aware systems and
applications, and investigation of exciting and inspiring ideas and
technologies. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Single Sensor Enhancements
- Hybrid Sensor Systems and Sensor Fusion
- Positioning and Navigation Algorithms
- Mobility
- Wireless Network Enhancements
- Context Modelling and Retrieval
- Context Provisioning Frameworks
- Location and Context Information Distribution
- Mobile Devices
- Security and Privacy of Location and Context
- Cognitive Environments
- Discovery and Execution Frameworks
- Scenarios and Applications
This workshop is co-located with Pervasive 2005 concerning time and
place, see http://www.pervasive2005.org for details.

First IEEE Workshop on Information Assurance in
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNIA 2005)
http://www.csee.umbc.edu/~younis/WSNIA2005.htm
In conjunction with
24th IEEE International Performance Computing and Communications Conference
(IPCCC 2005)
http://ipccc.org/
April 7-9, 2005, Phoenix, Arizona
Recently, there has been a growing interest in the potential use of
wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in applications such as smart
environments, disaster management, combat field reconnaissance, and
security surveillance. While the initial view of the community was that
WSNs will play a complementary role that enhances the quality of these
applications, recent research results have encouraged practitioners to
envision an increased reliance on WSNs in such critical and sensitive
applications. Therefore, to realize their potential, necessary
information assurance (IA) measures have to be incorporated in the
design and during the operation of WSNs. IA is usually specified using
attributes like integrity, authenticity, confidentiality, availability,
and survivability. A defense-in-depth approach to IA involves the
activities of attack and failure prevention, detection and response, as
well as the refinement of these activities. The scope of
defense-in-depth may start with a diameter that spans the deployed
sensors to a diameter that includes the command nodes and likely beyond.
It also involves assurance at, and cross-cutting, the protocol stack
layers, from physical to application.
Achieving information assurance in WSNs will require non-conventional
mechanisms due to many factors including: (1) sensors are significantly
constrained in the amount of available resources such as energy, storage
and computation; (2) sensors are expected to be deployed in very large
numbers in normal as well as forbidding environments; (3) WSNs suffer
from structural weakness and limited physical protection, and (4)
localization of impact is complicated due to the un-tethered nature of
the WSN and of the potential attackers. In addition, IA requirements may
vary according to a WSN's mission defined over a multi-dimensional
context, such as field of deployment (e.g., hostile versus friendly),
type of application (e.g., monitoring, tracking, data collection), mode
of operation (e.g., normal, exception, post-event recovery), and time.
This workshop will foster a forum for discussing and presenting recent
research results on IA in WSNs. Best papers will be invited to a Special
Issue of the Journal of Computer Security
(http://www.csl.sri.com/programs/security/jcs/). Topics of interest
include, although not limited to, the following:
* Fault & intrusion-tolerant architectural & operational models
* Robust routing, storage, and processing of sensed data
* Predictable MAC medium access arbitration
* IA architectures and protocols
* Vulnerabilities, attacks and countermeasures
* Monitoring and evaluation techniques
* Scalability and robust clustering techniques
* Resilient virtual infrastructures
* Autonomic IA in WSNs
* Formal representation & verification of assurance properties
* Adaptive security and assurance techniques
* Quality of service provisioning
* Metrics for measuring security, assurance and dependability
* Privacy-aware dependable operation
* Simulation and visualization environments
* Agent-based management for multi-tier WSNs
* WSNs as components of larger information grids
Prospective authors should submit their paper electronically to
toweissy(a)vt.edu <mailto:toweissy@vt.edu> or younis(a)csee.umbc.edu
<mailto:younis@csee.umbc.edu>. Papers should contain original material
and not be previously published, or currently submitted for
consideration elsewhere. The manuscript should not exceed 20
single-column double-space pages in MS-Word, PS or PDF font size 11 or
larger. The first page should include the title, authors' contact
information, an abstract and five keywords. Authors should attach the
abstract to their message.
