Scope Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) - based applications and services for urban environments are no more a remote possibility but an economic and social opportunity. Emergency-response coordination, infrastructure monitoring, urban planning, security, logistics or support for intelligent transportation systems are only some of the domains in which UAVs may become key in the city of the future. Future drones-in-the-city will become aerial sensing platforms that will be integrated into urban sensing networks, and the data they generate will be merged with the data flow coming from existing sensors through IoT platforms. Apart from the legislative changes needed to make urban drone-based applications feasible, it is essential to ensure the efficient and safe operation of UAV fleets within a restrictive and complex operating area. Also essential is enabling the accurate acquisition, secure transmission and correct interpretation of drone-retrieved information to allow new applications and business models to develop. This theme issue aims to bring together contributions that examine the operational, business and social challenges that the use of drones in urban environments pose. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: The design, development and validation of unmanned traffic management (UTM) platforms in urban areas, including issues of trajectory optimization and synchronization, autonomous navigation and mechanism to guarantee flight safety (‘Sense & Avoid’) Information fusion architectures for acquisition, visualization and interpretation of city data, with a special focus on the integration and use of UAV sensor information as part of existing IoT platforms Integration of UAVs and future communication networks such as 5G Real-time video recognition, anomaly detection, adaptive video streaming and other challenges related to video sensing in UAVs Visualization and management of big information flows through novel multimodal interaction including augmented/virtual reality Novel interaction paradigms for drone and drone fleet management and control Advances in enabling technologies to support UTM and drone-based applications including among others artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine vision, context-based fusion and multimodal interaction techniques Demonstrations and evaluations of novel services and applications of UAVs as urban sensor and robot platforms (e.g. for emergency support, resource monitoring, logistics and distribution) through simulations and tests with real flights Analysis of privacy, security and other legal issues generated by the presence of UAVs in urban areas Models to evaluate flight efficiency and fleet drone management. Pervasive citizen applications based on drone information. Submissions Submissions should be original papers and should not be under consideration in other publications. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed.
