Special Issue on Management of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks
A real revolution is taking place in wireless networking with fundamentally different architectures and services. Wireless Ad hoc networks (WAHNs) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are two leaders in this paradigm shift where the "network" is autonomously formed among many nodes (PDAs, lap-tops, sensors, etc.) with varying functionalities and power levels. These networks will be the enablers for ubiquitous computing and communications, as well as they can perform significant functions during natural disasters where pre-existing communications infrastructures may be destroyed. An ad hoc network configures itself dynamically depending on the environment, requiring perhaps a management approach that also dynamically adapts itself. In a wireless sensor network, nodes are assumed to be discardable, requiring fault management to have a totally different approach than for a traditional wired network. Given that WSNs and WAHNs will be dominant networks in not so distant future, what are the challenges for managing these complex and dynamic environments? This special issue intends to include articles describing the results of the latest work in the management of WSNs and WAHNs. The focus of this special issue will include (not limited to) the following topics:
· Management architectures for WAHNs and WSNs · Management protocols for WAHNs and WSNs · Security management for WAHNs and WSNs · Configuration and policy-based management for WAHNs and WSNs · Resource allocation and resource discovery for WAHNs and WSNs · Topology discovery for WAHNs and WSNs · Network auto-reconfiguration and self organization for WAHNs and WSNs · Scalability, reliability, and performance issues of WAHNs and WSNs · Call admission and traffic control policies for WAHNs and WSNs · Congestion control for WAHNs and WSNs · Fault management. fault tolerance and error recovery for WAHNs and WSNs · Power management and control algorithms for WAHNs and WSNs · Data management and representation for WAHNs and WSNs · Interoperability with overlay fixed and wireless networks · Applications and services specific network management approaches for WAHNs and WSNs · Service discovery and management for WAHNs and WSNs · Management issues in pilot projects, test beds, implementations for WAHNs and WSNs
Instructions to Contributors: We invite prospective authors to submit high quality, unpublished papers in Word, PDF or PS via e-mail to one of the guest editors, depending on their geographic zone. Please prepare the manuscript in single-column, double-spaced format. Paper preparation instructions can be found in any copy of the Journal, or by visiting the JNSM Web site at http://www.cstp.umkc.edu/jnsm/.
