ICFI is the primary international forum for discussing and reporting about research on the Feature Interaction problem in telecommunications and software systems since 1992. ICFI2009 will be held in conjunction with Distributed Computing Techniques 2009 (DisCoTec'09), a major cluster of conferences sponsored by IFIP.
ICFI2009 aims to bring together representatives of the communications industry, the software industry, and the research community working on various aspects of feature interactions in order to discuss possible solutions and their practical applications, as well as setting directions for further research.
ICFI2009 will feature presentations by invited speakers, presentations of research and industrial papers (including short presentations), a doctoral symposium as well as posters and tool demonstrations.
// THE FEATURE INTERACTION PROBLEM ---------------------------------//
Feature interactions refer to conflicts among different features on a system. The features may be functions, services, concerns or aspects. Even if each individual feature works as intended, using multiple features together may cause unexpected (and often undesirable) behaviors, due to the feature interactions.
The feature interaction problem was first studied in the domain of telecommunications systems. However, the phenomenon can occur in any software system that is subject to evolution, because the features of the new version of the system can interact with the features of the old system in an undesired way.
Emerging application domains for which the feature interaction problem becomes relevant include policy-driven systems, Web services /service-oriented architecture, home network systems, building automation systems, mobile and ubiquitous systems, Parlay, 3G, grid and active networks, product-line engineering, etc.
Detecting, resolving, preventing, and managing the feature interactions at different phases of the system life-cycle are more than ever important problems that need to be addressed with cost-effective techniques and tools.

The following topics are relevant for the conference. Yet, we welcome other contributions related to the feature interaction problem. - Feature interactions in software systems / applications - Feature interactions in emerging telecom and network architectures - Feature interactions in mobile and broadband services - Feature interactions in ubiquitous/pervasive computing - Service interactions (Web Services, SOA) - Current industrial practice and experience - Enterprise-level aspects of the feature interaction problem - Mechanisms for interaction detection and resolution - User-centric view on the interaction problem - Software-engineering view including requirements engineering and design
// PAPER SUBMISSION ------------------------------------------------//
All submissions must be in English. Technical papers submitted may be full papers or short papers. Accepted papers must be presented at the conference by one of the authors.
* Full papers: These must be unpublished and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere.
* Short papers: In order to make the conference as complete as possible from the point of view of coverage of current research in the area, we also solicit short papers. These can be; (I) industrial reports - describe industrial case studies or research directions (E) example papers - describe examples of FIs that occurred in real-life systems (P) position papers - describe novel research directions (W) work-in-progress papers - describe slightly immature, but exciting new ideas (S) summary/survey papers - share FI research already published elsewhere with the FI community
