----------------------------------------------------------------------- The recent evolution and successful development of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), Ad Hoc Networks, and Sensor Networks have yielded a demand to improve the Medium Access Control (MAC) Layer. The key goals of this improvement include Quality of Service (QoS) support mechanisms, efficient channel access mechanisms, and energy saving mechanisms, etc. The effort to improve the MAC layer is linked with many technical challenges including compatibility with legacy networks, complexity in implementation, and practical values in real market, etc. The need to address QoS support, MAC enhancement, and energy saving and provide timely, solid technical contributions in the MAC layer of these networks establishes the motivation behind this special issue.
This special issue focuses on the novel and practical ways to improve the MAC layer protocols in terms of QoS support, channel access, and energy saving for WLANs, WPANs, Ad Hoc Networks, and Sensor Networks. Papers that do not focus on the MAC layer will not be reviewed. Specific areas of interest include (but are not limited to):
Quality of Service support in the MAC layer
Channel access protocols in the MAC layer
Energy efficiency in the MAC layer
The manuscripts should be submitted as an e-mail attachment in PDF format to Yang Xiao at yangxiao@memphis.edu. If the file is larger than 1MB, the authors are encouraged to use WINZIP. Submitted papers must not be previously published nor submitted for publication elsewhere. Accepted papers should not exceed 6000 words or 12 single spaced pages in IEEE Transactions style. If email submission is impossible then six (6) copies of the paper should be sent by the due date to:
