Overview/Scope *******************

The 2011 edition of the SASO conference series will be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

The aim of the SASO conference series is to provide a forum for the foundations of a principled approach to engineering systems, networks and services based on self-adaptation and self-organization. To this end, the meeting aims to attract participants with different backgrounds, to foster cross-pollination between research fields, and to expose and discuss innovative theories, frameworks, methodologies, tools, and applications. The complexity of current and emerging computing systems has led the software engineering, distributed systems and management communities to look for inspiration in diverse fields (e.g., complex systems, control theory, artificial intelligence, sociology, and biology) to find new ways of designing and managing networks, systems and services. In this endeavor, self-organization and self-adaptation have emerged as two promising interrelated facets of a paradigm shift.

The fifth edition of the SASO conference emphasizes the interconnection of research between and within fields: application of self-* principles or systems to solve real-world problems or advance research in other research domains; advances in self-* mechanisms or analyses with potentially broad application; combination and interconnection of self-* systems; and extraction of new self-* principles or mechanisms from the study of natural or engineered systems.

Self-adaptive systems work in a top down manner. They evaluate their own global behavior and change it when the evaluation indicates that they are not accomplishing what they were intended to do, or when better functionality or performance is possible. A challenge is often to identify how to change specific behaviors to achieve the desired improvement. Self-organizing systems work bottom up. They are composed of a large number of components that interact locally according to typically simple rules. The global behavior of the system emerges from these local interactions. Here, a challenge is often to predict and control the resulting global behavior.

The topics of interest to SASO include, but are not limited to:

* Theories, frameworks and methods for self-* systems * Robustness and dependability of self-* systems * Control of emergent properties in self-* systems * Biologically, socially, and physically inspired self-* systems * Management and control of self-* systems * Design and engineering for self-* systems (self-organization, self-adaptation, self-management, self-monitoring, self-tuning, self-repair, self-configuration, etc.) * Applications and experiences with self-* systems

PAPERS *********** Contributions must present novel theoretical or experimental results, or practical approaches and experiences in building or deploying real-world systems, applications, tools, frameworks, etc. Contributions contrasting different approaches for engineering a given family of systems, or demonstrating the applicability of a certain approach for different systems are particularly encouraged.

In addition to normal papers, authors are invited to submit "framework" papers. These papers are intended to facilitate dissemination of knowledge through and beyond the community. A "framework" paper should contain a review a coherent body of relevant phenomena, techniques, systems, or applications and distill this to produce a concrete roadmap for new applications that take advantage of this body of knowledge.

POSTERS ************* The fifth SASO conference continues its tradition of offering poster sessions, a great opportunity for interactive presentation of diverse research. Poster sessions are informal and highly interactive, and allow authors and participants to engage in in-depth discussions about the presented work. Posters are an ideal format in which to present late-breaking results, innovations in their initial stages, and speculative/provocative ideas. Posters should cover the same key areas as Research Papers.

TUTORIALS *************** SASO 2011 will host a tutorial program for which it solicits proposals for tutorials to be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, on October 3 and 7, 2011. The goal of the tutorial program of SASO 2011 is to provide independent instruction on topics related to self-adaptive and self-organizing systems. For a guide on what topic areas, technologies and communities fall within the SASO focus refer to the Call for Papers, available on the conference website. We are planning for half-day (approx. 3.0 hours with one 30 minutes break) and full-day (approx. 6.0 hours with two 30 minutes breaks and a lunch break) durations. A tutorial may cover a wide scope of topics ranging from practical techniques and guidelines over standards to theoretical work. Please note that no marketing or product specific tutorials will be accepted. Tutorial levels may be introductory, intermediate, or advanced. Topics of broad interest are preferred.

WORKSHOPS ****************** The SASO 2011 Steering Committee invites proposals for the Workshop Program to be held along with the technical conference. SASO 2011 workshops will provide a meeting for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than the conference itself. Its aim is to stimulate and facilitate active exchange, interaction, and comparison of approaches, methods, and ideas related to specific topics, both theoretical and applied, in the general area of Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems. Members from all areas of the SASO community are invited to submit workshop proposals for review. Workshops on applications or on new and emerging topics are particularly encouraged. Workshops can vary in length, but most will be one full day in duration. Proceedings will be published through the IEEE . Attendance of one workshop will be free with registry for the main SASO conference; a workshop-only rate will be available as well.
