Special Issue on: Protocols and Algorithms for Future Cross--Layer and Hybrid Optical Networks
Background
Recent technological advances and breakthroughs in optical devices, communication sub-systems, and network architectures have led to a profound transformation in all aspects of optical network communications. The potential for highly-scalable "on-demand" service provisioning over multilayer network infrastructures provide an opportunity for service providers to reduce OPEX/CAPEX, and increase ROI. These efforts have special significance in light of the "post-bubble" dynamics of the optical networking market. One approach has been that in order to provision high-bandwidth pipes, multiple (and independent) control protocols are used to deal with the multiple layers where control can be exercised. However, it is recognized that a more integrated approach, capable of operating in multi-domain environments as well, is needed, and hence, it is becoming increasingly important for service providers to evaluate cross-layer/cross-domain design techniques to introduce new services at lower cost and higher quality.
On one hand, relying on optical transparency at the physical layer had been demonstrated to allow for dynamic and flexible optical layer with the possibility to add "intelligence". On the other hand, transparency reduces the ability of a client layer to interact with the physical layer, thus leading to limitations on network design, planning, control and management, in contexts where the assumed transparency no longer holds, e.g. IP over DWDM environments. For example, the need to account for the Physical Layer Impairment (PLI) constraints the kinds of paths that can be constructed for routing. Several cross-layer/cross-domain design approaches are emerging to solve the problems in this area, and have attracted much research interest worldwide. These solutions include PLI-aware optimization in: Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA), network design, failure recovery, optical sub-system placement, morphology of Service Level Agreements (SLAs), protocols for control plane, and dynamic provisioning techniques.
Various proposed techniques rely on interactions between the networking layer and the physical layer, but a broader set of cross-layer techniques is envisioned, extending possibly beyond physical and network layers. For example, multi-layer approaches can exploit the different traffic granularities and the corresponding technologies involved to control granularity, e.g., traffic grooming, hybrid O&E switching etc. It is important to examine the interfaces between different wavelength and session granularity layers that might be used, for example, is it more meaningful for a wavelength layer and a waveband layer to interoperate in a peer-to-peer arrangement or in a client-server arrangement? In order to provision services in X (where X can be IP/GMPLS/SONET/Ethernet, etc.) over WDM (or for SONET over Ethernet architectures) it is essential to understand the interaction across various layers and to develop efficient cross-layer mechanisms in the form of algorithms and protocols that can ultimately help reduce CAPEX/OPEX, while being able to route and schedule lightpaths, to provide multi-layer resilience, etc. Furthermore, several vendors/operators are exploring possibility of developing/deploying networks along cross-domain principles, as means of integrating hybrids of wireless and optical networks to support cost-effective broadband access.
Scope of Contributions
The special issue will cover recent developments and solutions proposed in the area of cross-layer/cross-domain design of optical networks. The main focus here is on network and higher layer issues and not on modeling the physical layer characteristics or impairments. Specifically, within the context of cross-layer/cross-domain design for optical networks, we solicit tutorial articles, and articles with tutorial content but also presenting original research, as well as experimental results focusing on the following topics:
* PLI-aware network design and RWA.
* Modeling of optimization of optical sub-systems placement (e.g., amplifiers, regenerators, etc.).
* PLI-aware wavelength monitoring, E2E authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA).
* Design and service provisioning for PLI-aware metropolitan networks.
* PLI-aware control plane protocol standardization and approaches to SLA support.
* Cross-layer protocol design for multi-layer (X over WDM, Ethernet over SONET, Optical Ethernet) networks.
* Multi-layer fault-localization protocols and failure recovery algorithms.
* Inter-layer traffic engineering, QoS support and call/session admission procedures.
* Data plane and control plane issues in cross-domain hybrid (wireless/optical) networks.
* Experiences from cross-layer/cross-domain optical network test-beds and field trials.
