--------------------------- ACM SIG Multimedia Strategic Retreat Comprehensive Report
The ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) was created ten years ago. Since that time, researchers have solved a number of important problems related to media processing, multimedia databases, and distributed multimedia applications. Discussions at the annual SIGMM conference ACM Multimedia 2001 (MM'01) in Ottawa, Canada suggested it was time for senior members of the research community to meet and discuss the future of multimedia research. Some members of the community believed that multimedia research was addressing narrow topics with limited impact rather than addressing major problems that will have wider impact on technology for real and emerging applications.
A strategic retreat was organized as part of MM'03 to assess the current state of multimedia research and suggest directions for future research. Twenty-six researchers from academia and industry participated in the two day retreat organized by Professors Lawrence A. Rowe and Ramesh Jain who are the past and current SIGMM Chairs.
The executive summary of the retreat can be found at: http://www.acm.org/sigmm/main/events/sigmm_retreat/
The final retreat report on Future Directions of Multimedia Research can be found at: http://www.acm.org/sigmm/

Interactive Art Program: http://www.mm2004.org/acm_mm04_call4interactiveartprogram.htm Exhibition: http://www.mm2004.org/acm_mm04_call4artexhibit.htm
This year's new Interactive Art Program will bring together the arts and multimedia communities to create the stage to explore, discuss, and push the limits for the advancement of both multimedia technology through the arts, and the arts through multimedia technology.
The Interactive Art Program will consist of two technical tracks and an exhibition. We invite RESEARCHERS in technical areas and ARTISTS working with digital media to submit their original contributions to the following tracks:
(1) TOOLS FOR CREATING MULTIMEDIA ART: performance, immersive, narrative, multi-modal, networked art, etc. The emphasis is on novel technical tools developed specifically for the creation of multimedia art in any form. We particularly encourage submission of tools in new and emerging areas.
(2) TOOLS DEVELOPED BY ARTISTS IN THE CREATION OF MULTIMEDIA ARTWORKS: will describe the process and technical details of the creation of artistic works that have required either the development of new multimedia tools, or novel uses of currently available multimedia tools. Artists that develop their own tools are strongly encouraged to submit their work to this track.
(3) MULTIMEDIA ART EXHIBITION: "Digital Boundaries: Multiculturalism, Identity, and Awareness". We seek art works that, using multimedia, explore issues of cultural identity, cultural awareness, and the boundaries created or enforced through the use of multimedia technology. The emphasis for the exhibition is on interactive art works that realize powerful artistic concepts using multimedia content and technologies (exhibition statement at the end of this message).
Awards will be given to submissions in all three tracks, placing particular emphasis on the most innovative use of multimedia technology.
The conference and exhibition will be held at Columbia University in New York City.

Multimedia 2004: CALL FOR VIDEO SUBMISSIONS
We'd like to encourage you to make a video for ACM Multimedia 2004. Video is a great way to present work that is best understood by example. Video also makes it possible to demonstrate your tool, system, application or brave new idea without having to bring the equipment for a "live" demo. Even if you've never made a video before, please consider this new opportunity for Video Submissions at ACM Multimedia 2004.
VIDEO SUBMISSIONS CATEGORIES
There are three categories of video submissions:
* Video figures (3 minutes) - accompanies a regular or short paper submission and serves as an illustration
* Video demonstrations (8 minutes) - gives a self-explanatory demo of a tool, system, or application. In addition we would like to encourage media artists to submit work that exemplifies new trends in video art or describes an interactive multimedia art application.
* Video vision (8 minutes) - describes a new brave idea of multimedia technology
Videos in the categories demonstration and vision need to be accompanied with a 2 page description of the video content using the ACM template. The descriptions of the selected videos will become part of the conference proceedings.
Videos will be published on a dedicated web site either in the ACM Digital Library or at the SIGMM website. Accepted videos will be presented in the video session during the conference. The best video demonstration and video vision will get a special podium.
The format for videos is MPEG-2, although we will accept VHS submissions. More information on video submissions can be found on the ACM Multimedia 2004 Web page http://www.mm2004.org/
