Workshop Theme

Modern vehicles are being increasingly equipped with electronic systems and computers. These parts are used to control and organize critical vehicular systems, e.g. the engine control. In addition, the same systems are used to control entertainment systems and to offer navigation aids for the driver. Therefore it appears that IT is an integral part for the concept and the development of future vehicles. But one of the biggest problems in integrating computer systems in cars is given by the typical lifespan of both.

While vehicles are used for a period of 10 to 15 years, the typical IT Systems’ lifespan is only just a few years. But new and innovative services can only be used with modern equipment, which facilitates the use of fast processing power and a huge range of sensors. For that reason, a separation of both computer systems and vehicles is unavoidable.

This separation can be achieved by the use of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Today, smartphones are powerful computers with constantly increasing processing power. The typical lifespan of a smartphone is small, making it the perfect solution for services which require modern computer systems. Furthermore, smartphones and tablets are equipped with the latest sensors which can be used to develop and offer new services to the driver and any other car passenger.

New kinds of services can be explored using both mobile device sensors and car sensors. Another interesting research topic is controlling cars by replacing user interfaces with a mobile device. This workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals and practitioners to discuss and address recent developments and challenges in realizing the communication between mobile devices and cars and using this combination for new kinds of services.

Specifically, we solicit original research contributions in the following areas:

• Communication between mobile devices and cars
• Sensor-networks in vehicles
• App concepts and technologies for different mobile platforms
• Controlling vehicle systems with mobile devices
• Innovative services and applications for mobile devices in cars
• Platforms and frameworks for mobile devices
• Location- and track-based services in cars
• Mobile marketing and location-based Advertising in cars
• Seamless communication

Paper submission

Papers should contain original material and not be previously published, or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. They must be limited to 6 pages in IEEE 8.5×11 conference format, and formatted in accordance with the IEEE Computer Society author guidelines..

All submissions will be handled via EDAS. Accepted papers will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined PerCom 2012 Workshops Proceedings.

At least one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the paper. Failure to present the paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper from the Proceedings.
